Background Inorganic materials with high O/N content for Uranium Extraction from Seawater (UES) show fast-adsorption rate, but practical applications are limited by their easy dispersion, difficult recovery, and poor selectivity. Therefore, inspired by the macroscopic large-area molding, antibacterial properties, and hierarchical porous microstructure of bamboo strips (BS), a nanoscale spindle-shaped phosphotungstic acid (PTA) loaded amidoximated BS (AOBS) as the inorganic/organic composite material with high O/N content is designed and applied to extracting uranium. Methods Under the effects of the hydrogen bonding crosslinking, the protonation process of -NH 2 , the physical limitations of PEG molecular chains, and others, a nanoscale spindle-shaped PTA loaded fibrous AOBS (PW 12 AOBS) is successfully synthesized by chemical cross-linking and hydrothermal methods. Significant Findings PW 12 AOBS has the super-hydrophilic surface and ultra-fast infiltration rate, so that it exhibits an excellent antibacterial performance and a super-fast adsorption rate. When the contact time is 5 mins, the adsorption capacity is 195.6 mg·g −1 , and a removal rate of uranium is 78.2 %. The highest removal rate of uranium is 82.6 %, and the adsorption capacity reaches 343.6 μg·g −1 in simulated seawater. The terminal OH/-COOH and bridging W = O from PW 12 AOBS synchronously act as the active sites for extracting uranium.

Traditional adsorption resin prepared by a low efficiency method has a low porosity and surface area , which limits the adsorption performance of the resin. Therefore, a novel porous resin was developed by structural design of the resins through post- modification with HPA and a post-crosslinked method. The novel porous post-modification resin was successfully prepared by the multistep method. Meanwhile, the high surface area and abundant micropores in HCR-AO can improve the adsorption rate by accelerating the diffusion of uranium in the external diffusion stage. The removal capacity of HCR-AO increased 366% for HCR and 120% for PSD-AO at the same initial concentration. HCR-AO takes less time to reach equilibrium than PSD-AO and HCR. Excitingly, the adsorption amount of the material dropped only slightly even after 8 cycles. The short equilibrium time and outstanding removal efficiency makes it a novel candidate for further extraction of U (VI) from seawater .

Seawater uranium extraction via adsorption technology can effectively alleviate the shortage of terrestrial uranium resources and ensure a steady, sustainable supply of essential uranium. Most uranium adsorbents face challenges like inefficient ion transport, salt shrinkage and marine biofouling. Thus, we innovatively constructed zwitterionic marine-adaptive porous cryogel adsorbents (PAO-SBMA) for uranium extraction from seawater. The incorporation of zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) not only regulates the hierarchical pore architecture of porous adsorbents but also imparts superhydrophilicity, antifouling capability, and salt-shrinkage resistance. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, FT-IR and XPS spectra jointly prove that the sulfonic acid groups perform as effective synergistic coordinating groups, and facilitate the efficient adsorption of uranium by amidoxime-based adsorbents. Through this “triple enhancement” strategy, the PAO-SBMA-1.5 (m AN /m SBMA = 1.5) exhibits remarkable uranium adsorption performance. Its adsorption capacity is approximately three times that of the polyamidoxime (PAO), reaching 1595.90 mg/g. After 21 days of test in natural seawater, PAO-SBMA-1.5 demonstrates a high uranium extraction capacity of 13.88 mg/g, and its extraction efficiency has reached as high as 84 %. The zwitterion-based adsorbent is poised to become a promising candidate for implementation in marine uranium extraction operations.

Meriting from the unique affinity of amidoxime groups towards uranium ions, porous organic polymers (POPs) substituted with cyano groups are promising precursors as high-performance uranium adsorbents. However, their synthesis suffers from harsh conditions, tedious operations, or costly catalysts, which hamper their large-scale utilization. Free-radical alternating copolymerization strategy offers a simple and viable approach to circumvent these bottlenecks with great atomic economy. Here, two electron-withdrawing cyano monomers, acrylonitrile (AN) and fumaronitrile (FN), are successfully integrated with the electron-rich divinylbiphenyl (DVBP) monomer via free-radical alternating copolymerization strategy, forming two family of POPs with tailorable cyano contents. After post-amidoximation, two types of amidoxime-functionalized POPs (AO-POPs) are consequently obtained. Having probed the cyano-induced penultimate effect, it is observed that different feed ratios has regulated the polymerization behaviors, porosities and even adsorption capacities of AO-POPs. Among them, AO-POPs-FN-3, with an appropriate specific surface area and the highest amidoxime content, exhibits the best uranium adsorption capacity (723 mg g −1 ), along with good selectivity and regenerability. This work demonstrates an environmentally friendly and easy-to-operate free radical copolymerization strategy for the rational design of POPs-based adsorbents and paving for the recycling and sustainable development of uranium resources.

Developing an efficient uranium enrichment process for large-scale eluates from marine-tested fibers is crucial for filling the gap in the downstream of seawater uranium extraction. Alkaline elution of 10 kg real marine-tested fibers yielded 33 L of clear eluate after pretreatment, where uranium existed mainly as [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 ] 2− , [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− , and [UO 2 (O 2 )(CO 3 ) 2 ] 4− species with a concentration of 11.98 mg/L, while magnesium concentration was up to 352.48 mg/L.MIP analysis selected D201 resin with more and larger pores, which showed better uranium adsorption due to a maximum electrostatic potential of 114.93 kcal/mol via simulation. 1 kg of D201 resin was used in a self-developed ion exchange equipment (maximum 100 L eluate per run) for concentration and purification. After 5 days of enrichment, 3 L of uranium concentrate was obtained, with uranium concentration increased to 121.48 mg/L and magnesium reduced to 14.9 mg/L. Ammonia water was added to the concentrate for precipitation, collecting 1112.45 mg of uranium product. The uranium precipitation rate was 99.27 %, and that of magnesium was only 31.1 %. The overall enrichment efficiency reached 93.13 % for uranium. ICP results showed the uranium mass fraction in the product was 33.1 %. TI-MS results indicated the U-235 abundance (≈0.72 %) was consistent with natural levels, and U-234 abundance (0.0064 %) was, slightly higher than natural, but still qualified it as natural uranium. This study provides an innovative enrichment process and theoretical support for efficient downstream uranium recovery in seawater uranium extraction.

Exhausted adsorbents from Sb-laden wastewater are hazardous and generally landfilled. This study presents that exhausted Sb adsorbents can be thermally reduced and recycled as supercapacitor electrode. Specifically, ordered hierarchical porous amidoxime-polyacrylonitrile (OHPAPAN) is synthesized for highly efficient Sb(V) ions adsorption and then thermal conversion of exhausted OHPAPAN to Sb-contained char, rendering excellent electrochemical activity. Sb 0 atom clusters are found to form during recycling process by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAFS), along with Sb oxide with average valence of +2.63. The 4d and 4p orbital of Sb cluster exhibits abundant electron state in Fermi level and valence band, making a pseudocapacitive contribution. Moreover, ordered hierarchical pore is confirmed to be inherited in the char from OHPAPAN, further enhancing electrical double layer capacitance. Coordination configuration of Sb and N/O becomes more stable from sexadentate (coordinate atom distance of 1.98 and 2.66 Å) in OHPAPAN to ≈2 N/O ligands in Sb-contained char (1.97 Å), underlining the shorter atom distance and higher orbital energy for Sb immobilization. Consequently, the capacitance maintains 96.1% after 6000 cycles, indicating that its excellent stability can rival relevant commercial electrode. This study offers a novel insight that Sb mineral sources can be derived from industrial wastewater, not just mining activity.
