Abstract This study investigated the controllable fabrication of anisotropic particles with different sizes and morphologies via self-assembly and photoinduced deformation of azo colloidal microspheres, which were formed from a typical azo molecular material (IAC-4) that contains a 1,4,3,6-dianhydrosorbitol core and the cinnamate peripheral groups. Firstly, azo colloidal microspheres were obtained by self-assembly via gradually adding deionized water into IAC-4 solution of tetrahydrofuran. For precisely controlling the length of short axis of anisotropic particles, IAC-4 colloidal microspheres with different and uniform sizes were obtained by adjusting the IAC-4 concentration, adding rate of water and stirring rate. The size of colloidal microspheres becomes smaller with the increase in IAC-4 concentration, the adding rate of water and the stirring rate. Finally, IAC-4 colloidal microspheres in the solid state, perpendicularly irradiated by the linearly polarized laser beam (λ = 488 nm), were irreversibly and controllably stretched into anisotropic particles with the different morphologies, length of long axis and axial ratio via adjusting the irradiation time and the power of laser beam.

This study investigated Janus and strawberry-like particles composed of azo molecular glass and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) oligomer, focusing on controllable fabrication and formation mechanism of these unique structures and morphologies. Two materials, the azo molecular glass (IA-Chol) and PDMS oligomer (H2pdca-PDMS), were prepared for this purpose. The Janus and strawberry-like particles were obtained from the droplets of a dichloromethane (DCM) solution containing both IA-Chol and H2pdca-PDMS, dispersed in water and stabilized by poly(vinyl alcohol). Results show that the structured particles are formed through segregation between the two components induced by gradual evaporation of DCM from the droplets, which is controlled by adding ethylene glycol (EG) into the above dispersion. Without the addition of EG, Janus particles are formed through the full segregation of the two components in the droplets. On the other hand, with the existence of EG in the dispersion, strawberry-like particles instead of Janus particles are formed in the phase separation process. The diffusion of EG molecules from the dispersion medium into the droplets causes the PDMS phase deswelling in the interfacial area due to the poor solvent effect. Caused by the surface coagulation, the coalescence of the isolated IA-Chol domains is jammed in the shell region, which results in the formation of the strawberry-like particles. For the particles separated from the dispersion and dried, the PDMS oligomer phase of the Janus particles can adhere and spread on the substrate to form unique “particle-on-pad” morphology due to its low surface energy and swelling ability, while the strawberry-like particles exist as “standstill” objects on the substrates. Upon irradiation with a linearly polarized laser beam at 488 nm, the azo molecular glass parts in the particles are significantly deformed along the light polarization direction, which show unique and distinct morphologies for these two types of the particles.

The interaction between the electrode and electrolyte is a critical determinant of the charge storage rate in photorechargeable supercapacitors. Enhancing the electrode’s affinity for the electrolyte is commonly achieved by modifying the electrode surface with polar functional groups and increasing its porosity. However, finely tailored methods specific to particular electrodes remain underdeveloped. In this study, based on DFT calculations, we propose the hybridization of MXene with 4-aminoazobenzene-4′-sulfonic acid sodium to enhance the interfacial affinity between the electrode and electrolyte. Our findings reveal that the −SO3 group facilitates electron transfer from MXene to azo molecules, reducing the desolvation energy of Li+ in electrolytes and thereby increasing wettability. Consequently, the hybrid electrode exhibits an impressive area-specific capacity of 2837.5 mF/cm2. Furthermore, the prepared flexible supercapacitor demonstrates high energy density, retains nearly 100% of its capacitance after 20,000 charge–discharge cycles, and maintains 90% capacitance retention after 5000 bending cycles. When integrated with tandem perovskite solar cells, the photorechargeable supercapacitor effectively stores photogenerated charges, achieving an overall conversion efficiency of 19.4%. These findings underscore the exceptional electrochemical performance of the developed hybrid electrode and its potential for a wide range of energy storage applications.

A comprehensive teaching experiment plan tailored for third-year undergraduates has been developed. Initially, instructors synthesize (E)-2-(4-((4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-3-methylphenyl)diazenyl)phenoxy)-ethan-1-ol(M-Azo-2) monomer as part of the preclass preparation. Subsequently, students perform an acylation reaction experiment to prepare an azobenzene derivative containing cross-linking points on both sides. This derivative is then combined with poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate in the absence of external solvent under conditions conducive to radical polymerization, resulting in a thin film that exhibits light-wet dual-stimulation responsiveness. This process enables students to comprehend both the chemical reactivity and photoisomerization propensity of azobenzene to effectively bridge elements of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry. The experiment demonstrates three vivid and novel biomimetic phenomena: “color-changing flowers”, “phototropic seedlings”, and “mimosa”, which display photochromic, light-induced deformation, and humidity-responsive behavior of the film, respectively. This experiment enhances students’ appreciation for the application potential of biomimetic materials and fosters innovative scientific thinking.
