Wood is a common-sense thermostable construction material, but the decrease in its structural stability and mechanical strength due to the degradation of lignin and hemicelluloses limits its practical applications in extreme environments. Here, we synthesize a high-performance wood/polyimide composite via the partial substitution of lignin and hemicellulose with super thermostable polyimide . This method involves the rapid partial removal of lignin and hemicellulose in only 3 min using microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment and subsequent impregnation of polyimide into the pretreated wood. The microwave-assisted DES pretreatment greatly reduced the processing time for lignin and hemicellulose extraction, while preserving the natural cellular scaffold of wood and opening more channels for polyimide infiltration . The obtained wood/polyimide composite showed a 17% improved Young's modulus and a 63% higher dynamic storage modulus than natural wood. The temperature of the first maximum decomposition rate of the wood/polyimide composite significantly increased to 290 °C due to the infiltration of the thermostable polyimide. Furthermore, the wood/polyimide composite exhibited a smoke suppression property (33% decrease), and the time to produce smoke was delayed by 200 s. Our work provides a rapid pretreatment method for wood and a substitution compositing method to produce wood-framed polyimide composites with excellent thermostability.

In recent years, the field of shape memory materials with active deformation capabilities has experienced rapid development. However, bismaleimide, as a widely used structural material in the aerospace industry, has been neglected in the field of shape memory. This work designed a UV-crosslinked network with 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone monomer, and prepared 4D printed smart structures based on shape memory bismaleimide resin through UV-assisted DIW printing. 4D printed semi-interpenetrating network polymer materials were obtained through a two-stage UV-thermal curing process, resulted in an increase in the material's glass transition temperature to a maximum of 187.4 °C. The storage modulus was improved to 5229 MPa. More important, we achieved a lowest shrinkage rate (0.21 %) of 4D printed polymer. The composite sandwich structure with electrical-driven shape memory performance was printed by double-sided printing of bismaleimide resin on conductive carbon fabric. 4D printed composite structure realizes in-situ self-blocking secondary curing, deformation process after curing. This significant progress provides a promising prospect for remote controllable and precise driving in the aerospace field.

Multilayer materials attracted intense scientific interests in view of their special interlayer structure and potential application in diverse fields. Different from the conventional approach of layer-by-layer assembly, in this study we proposed an engineering approach of layer-by-layer curing from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer and rigid cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The covalent-bonding from the crosslinking curing reaction as the driving force ensured the strong interlayers adhesion, and meanwhile the nanoreinforcing effect from silylated CNC in the composite layers provided the tailor-made physicochemical properties for the fabricated multilayer membranes. The multilayer structures indicating the good interlayers' adhesion and structural integrity of the di- and tri-layer membranes were observed from the microscopy characterization. In comparison with the monolayer PDMS membrane, the developed CPC trilayer membrane (possessing the sandwiched structure of two composite layers and one neat layer) exhibited the advancement on the storage modulus , special optical scattering and hazing, dielectric permittivity and barrier performance, derived from the nanoscaled reinforcing and obstruction effects of rod-like natural nanoparticles (Si CNC).

Silk fibroin (SF) can be enzymatically crosslinked through tyrosine residues to fabricate hydrogels with good biocompatibility and tunable mechanical properties. Using tyramine substitution can increase the phenolic group content to facilitate the gelation kinetics and mechanical properties. In this study, a two-step chemical modification method is demonstrated to synthesize silk acid-tyramine (SA-TA) conjugates with a high phenolic group content (>7 mol%). The SA-TA shows rapid enzyme-catalyzed gelation property where the sol-gel transition takes less than 10 s at 37°C, allowing cell encapsulation with uniform distribution while maintaining high cell viability (>90%). Furthermore, the enzyme-catalyzed SA-TA hydrogels show enhanced storage modulus than enzyme-catalyzed SF hydrogels, long-term stability, and good cytocompatibility, indicating their great potential in 3D cell culture. The in vivo implantation study demonstrates that the SA-TA hydrogels are biodegradable with a mild immune response. This implies that SA-TA hydrogels can be applied in various medical applications, such as tissue engineering, cell delivery, and 3D bioprinting. Statement of Significance In this study, a two-step chemical modification method is demonstrated to synthesize silk acid-tyramine (SA-TA) conjugates with a high phenolic group content (>7 mol%).
