Catalytic Effect of Facile Synthesized TiH1.971 Nanoparticles on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2

Liuting Zhang,Xiong Lu,Liang Ji,Nianhua Yan,Ze Sun,Xinqiao Zhu

Catalytic doping plays an important role in enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2, while finding an efficient and reversible catalyst remains to be a great challenge in enhancing the de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2. Herein, a bidirectional nano-TiH1.971catalyst was prepared by a wet chemical ball milling method and its effect on hydrogen storage properties of MgH2was studied. The results showed that all the TiH1.971nanoparticles were effective in improving the de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2. The MgH2composites doped with TiH1.971could desorb 6.5 wt % H2in 8 min at 300 °C, while the pure MgH2only released 0.3 wt % H2in 8 min and 1.5 wt % H2even in 50 min. It was found that the smaller the size of the TiH1.971particles, the better was the catalytic effect in promoting the performance of MgH2. Besides, the catalyst concentration also played an important role and the 5 wt %-c-TiH1.971modified system was found to have the best hydrogen storage performance. Interestingly, a significant hydrogen absorption amount of 4.60 wt % H2was evidenced for the 5 wt %-c-TiH1.971doped MgH2within 10 min at 125 °C, while MgH2absorbed only 4.11 wt% hydrogen within the same time at 250 °C. The XRD results demonstrated that the TiH1.971remained stable in cycling and could serve as an active site for hydrogen transportation, which contributed to the significant improvement of the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2.Keywords:hydrogen storage;MgH2;TiH1.971;catalytic effect;reversibility

Catalytic effect of two-dimensional Mo2TiC2 MXene for tailoring hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Hao-yu ZHANG,Gui-bin TIAN,Fu-ying WU,Zhen-dong YAO,Jia-guang ZHENG,Liu-ting ZHANG

Two-dimensional Mo 2 TiC 2 MXenematerial was synthesized by etching Mo 2 TiAlC 2 and then doped into MgH 2 to tailor its hydrogen storage performance. The initial hydrogen desorption temperature of the Mo 2 TiC 2 -doped MgH 2 was significantly reduced from 330 °C (pristine MgH 2 ) to 187 °C. Isothermal dehydrogenation analysis indicated that the MgH 2 +9 wt.% Mo 2 TiC 2 composite rapidly discharged 6.4 wt.% H 2 at 300 °C within 4 min. For hydrogenation, the dehydrogenated MgH 2 +9 wt.% Mo 2 TiC 2 uptook 6.5 wt.% H 2 at 175 °Cwithin 5 min. By calculation, the activation energy for MgH 2 +9 wt.% Mo 2 TiC 2 was calculated to be (135.6±1.9) kJ/mol for the desorption reaction and (46.1±0.2) kJ/mol for the absorption reaction. After 20 cycles, 1.0 wt.% H 2 was lost for the MgH 2 +9 wt.% Mo 2 TiC 2 composite. Microstructure analysis results showed that the presence of Mo in Mo 2 TiC 2 enhanced the thermal stability of MXene and reduced the amount of active Ti during cycling, leading to poorer catalytic effect of the catalyst compared to Ti 3 C 2 .

Graphene-Supported Sc2O3/TiO2 for Superior Catalysis on Hydrogen Sorption Kinetics of MgH2

Haixiang Huang,Jinting Chen,Tingting Xu,Yujie Lv,Bogu Liu,Bao Zhang,Jianguang Yuan,Ying Wu

Complex metal oxide catalysts greatly accelerate the hydrogen sorption rates in the magnesium hydride system. In this study, the graphene-supported Sc2O3/TiO2 catalyst is synthesized by means of a simple method, and a surprisingly synergetic effect of the Sc2O3-TiO2 cocatalyst on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 is observed. The MgH2-Sc2O3/TiO2@Gn composite starts to release hydrogen at 140 °C and reaches the peak dehydrogenation temperature at 239.9 °C. It absorbs 6.55 wt% of H2 in 1 min and desorbs 5.71 wt% of H2 in 10 min at 300 °C, showing excellent hydrogen absorption and desorption performance. Furthermore, with the decrease of the grain size and changes in the structure, the activity of the catalyst is greatly improved. The low-valent titanium and scandium and oxygen vacancies formed in the process of dehydrogenation facilitate hydrogen diffusion and electron transfer, and further improve the kinetic performance of the Mg/MgH2-Sc2O3/TiO2@Gn system. This study aims to provide insights into studying complex metal oxides as catalysts to improve hydrogen storage performance, and shed light on other catalysis-related research.

Improved hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 by Mxene (Ti3C2) supported MnO2

Weitao Shi,Feifan Hong,Renhuan Li,Ruolin Zhao,Sizhi Ding,Ziqi Liu,Peilin Qing,Yi Fan,Haizhen Liu,Jin Guo,Zhiqiang Lan

MgH 2 is a promising high-capacity solid hydrogen storage material. In this work, MnO 2 -doped Ti 3 C 2 (Ti 3 C 2 @MnO 2 ) was synthesized and used as a catalyst to improve the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . We found that the dehydrogenated 10 wt% Ti 3 C 2 @MnO 2 -doped MgH 2 sample exhibited good hydrogen adsorption ability even at room temperature (30 °C), and could absorb 5.13 wt% of hydrogen in 400 s at 75 °C. The re‑hydrogenated Ti 3 C 2 @MnO 2 -doped MgH 2 sample started to release hydrogen at 182 °C and required 484 s to completely release hydrogen at 275 °C with a dehydrogenation capacity of 6.4 wt%. The Ti 3 C 2 @MnO 2 composite did not change the thermodynamic properties of MgH 2 . In the MgH 2  + Ti 3 C 2 @MnO 2 sample, Ti 3 C 2 , TiO 2 , MnO 2 , MnO, and Mn combined with MgH 2 to form Ti 3 C 2 /MgH 2 , TiO 2 /MgH 2 , MnO 2 /MgH 2 , MnO/MgH 2 , and Mn/MgH 2 multiphase interfaces, which improved the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . The findings of this work may provide a new strategy for preparing novel and efficient catalysts for hydrogen storage applications.

Boosting the hydrogen storage performance of Mg-rich quaternary alloy hydrides via in-situ evolution of bidirectional catalytic phases

Ruijie Liu,Xinhao Jiang,Xinqiang Wang,Zhenglong Li,Xiaoying Yang,Jingbo Chen,Yanxia Liu,Wengang Cui,Fan Gao,Yong Gao,Fulai Qi,Chao Zheng,Mingchang Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Jian Miao,Lixian Sun,Jian Chen

Although Mg alloy-based hydrides have been considered as promising solid-state materials due to their high capacity and low cost, the high dehydrogenation temperature of ∼ 300℃ severely limited their practical application. Herein, a series of Mg-based quaternary alloys of Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 M 5 (M = Al, Zn, Co, La) hydrides were prepared by a combination of meltspinning and ball milling process, demonstrating an efficient approach to promoting the hydrogen storage properties. Among them, the Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 hydride (H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 ) as the most excellent one starts to release hydrogen from 175℃, 125℃ lower than that of MgH 2 . Especially, the peak hydrogen release temperature of H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 was remarkedly reduced from 347℃ to 253℃, compared with MgH 2 . Additionally, the H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 presented an impressive initial hydrogen capacity of 4.2 wt% with a high-capacity retention of 92.6 % over 10 dehydrogenation cycles. In/Ex-situ XRD analyses proved that the synergistic effects of in-situ formed metallic Ni and LaH 2 catalytic phases during the milling and ab/desorption processes can simultaneously enhance the ab/desorption kinetics of Mg/MgH 2 . That is, the LaH 2 can act as a hydrogen pump to promote the dehydrogenation of hydrides, while the Ni is beneficial to accelerate the dissociation of metal-hydrogen atoms and the formation of hydrogen molecules on the surface of Mg alloy. These findings highlight the potential of multicomponent Mg-based alloys for practical use in solid-state hydrogen storage systems through in-situ formed catalytic phases.

Enhanced H2 sorption performance of magnesium hydride with hard-carbon-sphere-wrapped nickel

Dandan Peng,Zhenmin Ding,Yaokun Fu,Yu Wang,Jia Bi,Yuan Li,Shumin Han

Magnesium hydride is regarded as one of the most ideal candidates for hydrogen storage, but its relatively high operating temperatures and slow kinetics always hinder its commercial applications. Herein, we first fabricated hard-carbon-sphere-wrapped Ni (Ni/HCS) via a mild chemical method; subsequently, the as-prepared additive was introduced to fabricate an Mg–Ni/HCS composite by using hydriding combustion synthesis. Hard carbon spheres (HCS) effectively inhibited the agglomeration of hydride particles during hydrogen storage cycling; they could also provide active sites to promote the nucleation of Mg-based hydrides. During the hydriding combustion synthesis procedure, in situ-formed Mg2NiH4 could induce the absorption of MgH2, thus triggering its hydrogen properties. Remarkable enhancement in hydrogen absorption properties of the composite was found. The composite absorbed 6.0 wt% H2 within 5 min at 275 °C; moreover, even at 75 °C, it could still absorb 3.5 wt% H2. Furthermore, it delivered a high reversible hydrogen absorption capacity of 6.2 wt% and excellent rate capability at 350 °C. It was also demonstrated that the composite could release 6.2 wt% H2 at 350 °C within 5 min. A rather low activation energy value (65.9 kJ mol−1) for the dehydrogenation of MgH2 was calculated as compared to that for commercial MgH2 (133.5 kJ mol−1).

Alloy-type Mo single-atom catalyst enhancing hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Cenyu Yang,Chen Hu,Xiaoyu Wu,Yao Pang,Xiaofang Liu,Jianglan Shui

Metallic single-atom catalysts (SACs) have demonstrated high activity and potential in enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . However, previous reports primarily focus on supported SACs, which often suffer from insufficient contact between single-atom active sites and hydrogen storage materials. In this study, the precursor Mo(CO) 6 is uniformly dispersed on the surface of MgH 2 via impregnation adsorption, leading to the formation of alloy-type Mo single atoms after hydrogenation/dehydrogenation activation. This alloy structure enables zero-distance contact between catalytic sites and the hydrogen storage material, facilitating electron exchange and hydrogen transfer between the Mo sites and MgH 2 . The MgH 2 loaded with Mo single atoms (Mo 1 -MgH 2 ) exhibits excellent hydrogen absorption and desorption properties, with the initial hydrogen release temperature lowered from 323 to 218 °C. At 250 °C, Mo 1 -MgH 2 absorbs over 6.77 wt% of hydrogen within 1 min and releases over 5.85 wt% within 4 h. During 10 cycles of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions, Mo 1 -MgH 2 maintains nearly 100% capacity and shows stable kinetics. This work provides new insights into the design and fabrication of catalysts for hydrogen storage materials.

Synergistic Effects of In-Situ-Formed Multivalent Titanium and Mg2Ni for Improving the Hydrogen-Storage Properties of MgH2

Yazhou Wang,Shunxiang Wang,Qingjie He,Weiqi Sun,Jiaao Wu,Yongpeng Xia,Cuili Xiang,Yongjin Zou,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun

Graphical We employ a hydrothermal method and high-temperature calcination to prepare well-dispersed NiTiO 3 nanoparticles with smaller than 20 nm. The NiTiO 3 nanoparticles show good catalytic effect on hydrogen storage of MgH 2 . The further structural analysis shows that the excellent hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 -NiTiO 3 benefits from multivalent state of titanium and Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 . Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) has gained significant consideration as a cost-effective solid-state hydrogen-storage material with a substantial hydrogen capacity. However, its practical applications are impeded by its poor kinetics and high thermal stability. In this study, we employed a hydrothermal method and high-temperature calcination to prepare well-dispersed NiTiO 3 nanoparticles smaller than 20 nm. Next, we investigated the effect of the NiTiO 3 nanoparticles for educating the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . The synergistic catalytic effect of multivalent titanium and Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 enhanced hydrogen storage performance of the MgH 2 system. The addition of 5 wt % NiTiO 3 lowered the initial hydrogen evolution temperature of MgH 2 to 194 °C. After 12 minutes at 275 °C, the 5 wt % NiTiO 3 -MgH 2 composites released 6.1 wt % of hydrogen. The dehydrogenation activation energy ( E a ) of the 5 wt % NiTiO 3 -MgH 2 composites decreased significantly to 38.78±2.1 kJ/mol. Furthermore, hydrogen uptake of 5 wt % NiTiO 3 -MgH 2 at 125 °C reaches 5.1 wt % in 300 s under hydrogen pressure of 20 bar. These findings introduce an innovative concept for preparing high active catalysts for improving the dehydrogenation/hydrogenation kinetics of MgH 2 .

Fibrous V/Nb bimetallic oxides with remarkable catalytic effect on hydrogen storage properties of MgH2

Xuansheng Wang,Muzi Liu,Tian Tian,Fang Liu,Jiali Wang,Jinping Li,Guang Liu

MgH₂ is recognized as one of the most promising solid hydrogen storage materials; however, its practical application is confined by sluggish kinetics and stable thermodynamics. In this study, fibrous VNbO₅ was synthesized via electrospinning and subsequently introduced into MgH₂ through ball milling technology to enhance hydrogen storage properties. The addition of 7 wt% VNbO₅ give rise to the obvious decline in the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH₂, from 322.2 °C to 200.2 °C. At 300 °C, the modified composite exhibited rapid dehydrogenation, releasing approximately 6.43 wt% hydrogen within 8.1 min. Moreover, the fully dehydrogenated sample demonstrated the ability to absorb hydrogen at room temperature and absorbed 6 wt% H₂ at 200 °C within 16 s. The desorption activation energy of the MgH₂-7 wt% VNbO₅ composite was determined to be 75.32 ± 1.44 kJ/mol, representing an approximate 48.1% reduction compared to the 145.25 ± 2.14 kJ/mol of pure MgH₂. Furthermore, the system possessed remarkable cyclic stability, retaining 95.5% of hydrogen storage amount after 20 cycles. During the reaction process, VNbO₅ decomposed into low-valence state active catalytic species, including Nb₂O₅, NbO, Nb, VO₂, and V. The in-situ generation of this multi-element, multi-valence chemical environment synergistically enhanced hydrogen storage performance of MgH₂.

Nano Fe and Mg2Ni derived from TMA-TM (TM = Fe, Ni) MOFs as synergetic catalysts for hydrogen storage in MgH2

Zhewen Ma,Qiuyu Zhang,Wen Zhu,Darvaish Khan,Chuanzhu Hu,Tianping Huang,Wenjiang Ding,Jianxin Zou

TMA-TM (TM = Fe, Ni) MOFs were synthesized successfully by a facile method. A MgH2-TM MOF (TM = Fe, Ni) composite was obtained via ball milling and the corresponding hydrogen storage performance was investigated. Particularly, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was performed to in situ characterize the dehydrogenation behavior of the MgH2-TM MOF composite. The results reveal that nano α-Fe and Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni derived from the TMA-TM MOFs display a synergetic improving effect on the de/hydrogenation of MgH2. During the hydrogen desorption process, Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni works as a “hydrogen pump” to quickly deliver hydrogen and facilitates hydrogen diffusion. Meanwhile, α-Fe accelerates the nucleation and growth of Mg by reducing the nucleation energy of Mg from MgH2. The hydriding activation energy of the MgH2-TM MOF declines to 45.3 kJ mol−1 H2. Meanwhile, the peak dehydriding temperature of the MgH2-TM MOF is 530.9 K, which is much lower compared with the MgH2–Fe MOF composite (541.7 K) and as-milled MgH2 (685.2 K). Therefore, nano Mg2Ni and α-Fe derived from the TMA-TM MOFs can remarkably improve the hydrogen storage properties of the MgH2/Mg system due to their synergetic catalytic effects.

Dual-cation K2TaF7 catalyst improves high-capacity hydrogen storage behavior of MgH2

Chengguo Yan,Xu Lu,Jiaguang Zheng,Yan Zhang,Qinan Wu,Fuying Wu,Liuting Zhang

MgH 2 has been extensively regarded as a low-cost hydrogen storage material with high gravimetric hydrogen capacity of approximately 7.6 wt%. However, the hydrogen release and absorption kinetics in MgH 2 still needs further improving. For the first time, the catalytic impacts of a new dual-cation metal fluoride K 2 TaF 7 upon the hydrogen storage characteristics of MgH 2 have been investigated in this work. With only 1 wt% K 2 TaF 7 dopant , the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 was lowered by about 130 °C, releasing more than 7.3 wt% hydrogen totally. The desorption activation energy of MgH 2 + 1 wt% K 2 TaF 7 composite was decreased to 107.2 ± 1.2 kJ mol −1 . Besides, at 190 °C, the dehydrogenated MgH 2 + 1 wt% K 2 TaF 7 sample could absorb 6.56 wt% H 2 , while pristine MgH 2 re-absorbed only 3.45 wt% H 2 . Further studies revealed that K 2 TaF 7 could react with MgH 2 during dehydrogenation and produce symbiotic hydrides KMgH 3 and TaH 0.8 , which could play the role of hydrogen pumps during hydrogen release and uptake. The cooperative catalysis between the hydrogen pump effect and the active interface in the multi-hydride area significantly enhanced the reversible hydrogen storage in the MgH 2 +1 wt% K 2 TaF 7 composite. This study provides new thinking for novel catalysts to elevate the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 .

Improving the hydrogen storage performance of lithium borohydride by Ti3C2 MXene

Yanping Fan,Dandan Chen,Xianyun Liu,Guangxin Fan,Baozhong Liu

Two-dimensional layered material of Ti 3 C 2 has been used to improve the hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH 4 . The results of temperature-programmed dehydrogenation (TPD) and isotherm dehydrogenation (TD) demonstrate that adding the Ti 3 C 2 contributes to the hydrogen storage performance of LiBH 4 . The dehydrogenation temperature decreases and the dehydrogenation rate increases with increasing the adding amounts of Ti 3 C 2 . The onset dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH 4 + 40 wt% Ti 3 C 2 composite is 120 °C and approximately 5.37 wt% hydrogen is liberated within 1 h at 350 °C. Furthermore, the activation energy of LiBH 4 + wt.% Ti 3 C 2 is also greatly reduced to 70.3 kJ/mol, much lower than that of pure LiBH 4 . The remarkable dehydrogenation property of the LiBH 4 + 40 wt% Ti 3 C 2 may be due to the layered active Ti-containing Ti 3 C 2 and the high surface area of MXene .
