A Low-Temperature Heat Output Photoactive Material-Based High-Performance Thermal Energy Storage Closed System

Xiangyu Yang,Shijie Li,Jin Zhang,Xiaomin Wang,Yongzhen Wang,Jianguo Zhao

Designing and synthesizing photothermal conversion materials with better storage capacity, long-term stability as well as low temperature energy output capability is still a huge challenge in the area of photothermal storage. In this work, we report a brand new photothermal conversion material obtained by attaching trifluoromethylated azobenzene (AzoF) to reduced graphene oxide (rGO). AzoF-rGO exhibits outstanding heat storage density and power density up to 386.1 kJ·kg−1and 890.6 W·kg−1, respectively, with a long half-life (87.7 h) because of the H-bonds based on high attachment density. AzoF-rGO also exhibits excellent cycling stability and is equipped with low-temperature energy output capability, which achieves the reversible cycle of photothermal conversion within a closed system. This novel AzoF-rGO complex, which on the one hand exhibits remarkable energy storage performance as well as excellent storage life span, and on the other hand is equipped with the ability to release heat at low temperatures, shows broad prospects in the practical application of actual photothermal storage. Keywords:photothermal conversion material;outstanding heat storage density;long-term storage;low temperature energy output;closed system

Controllable preparation and thermal properties of SiC spherical high temperature shape-stable composite phase change materials based on gel-casting

Yicheng Hou,Jun Qiu,Wei Wang,Xibo He,Zhen Wang,Yong Shuai

The development of high-temperature composite phase change materials (CPCMs) suitable for mass-production and high-performance is still a very urgent problem in the efficient utilization of renewable energy. In this study, a SiC spherical high-temperature CPCMs based on aqueous gel-casting suitable for batch molding using commercially available silicone molds is proposed. The porosity of the porous SiC framework can be adjusted by changing the content of starch granules in the slurry. The sample containing 20 wt% starch has relatively high open porosity and thermal conductivity , which is considered to be close to the optimal formulation of CPCMs. This formula possesses a high thermal conductivity of 10.2 W·m −1 ·k −1 benefiting from the continuous thermal transport channels consisting of the uniformly distributed large spherical pores and interconnected small pores. Meanwhile, the thermal storage density of the CPCMs reaches 395.21 J·g −1 in the temperature range of 550 ℃ and 750 ℃ since up to 89.06% of the pores are filled with molten salts. At the same time, the CPCMs exhibit excellent cycle stability in 100 thermal cycles. In particular, these CPCMs can be easily integrated into thermal energy storage (TES) system. Based on the rapid heat storage simulation of the C-D model, the packed-bed latent thermal energy storage system containing spherical CPCMs will have a more uniform temperature distribution and a 26.7% reduction in charging time compared with the traditional packed-bed system. This work provides a new reference for the design of spherical CPCMs in TES systems.

Facile assembly of cellulose-derived 3D-graphene/lithium hydroxide monohydrate nanocomposite for low-temperature chemical heat storage

Yang Xixian,Li Shijie,Zhang Shiyi,Chen Xin,Peng Shuai

Abstract Commonly used nanocarbon composite materials are routinely synthesized from petroleum-based resources. To avoid their bad impact on the environment, using cellulose-based materials as the promising resources is a better choice due to its easy acquisition and rich reserves. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose was selected as the carbon precursor to synthesize novel cellulose-derived 3D-graphene/LiOH·H 2 O nanomaterials for chemical heat storage to improve the efficiency of thermal energy utilization. The characterization and performance test results show that LiOH·H 2 O particles (5–20 nm) were highly dispersed on the 3D graphene carbon skeleton. These materials had excellent heat storage densities and thermal conductivities due to a completely new, hydrophilic, nano-reactive interface on 3D graphene. Among the materials, 3D-GF-VC-LiOH·H 2 O (Ascorbic acid-modified 3D-graphene/LiOH·H 2 O) exhibited the best heat storage and thermal conductivity properties. It achieved a thermal conductivity of 2.6 W/m K, which was 1.5 times that obtained with pure LiOH·H 2 O, and its heat storage density (2157 kJ/kg) was 3.3 times that of pure LiOH·H 2 O (661 kJ/kg). The activation energy could decrease to 27.5 kJ/mol. Moreover, the heat storage temperature range of LiOH·H 2 O was clearly expanded by introduction of 3D graphene. Hence, the addition of cellulose-derived 3D graphene is a very efficient means by which the design of chemical heat storage materials can be improved. Graphical abstract

Enhanced Thermochemical Energy Storage Stability of CaO-Based Composite Pellets Incorporated with a Zr-Based Stabilizer

Yue Zhou,Zijian Zhou,Lei Liu,Xiangyao She,Ruichang Xu,Jian Sun,Minghou Xu

Calcium looping is a potential thermochemical energy storage technology applied in a high-temperature working window. However, CaCO3/CaO materials are prone to encounter severe sintering, exhibiting poor thermal energy storage/release stability. To improve the thermochemical energy storage stability, different amounts (5, 15, and 30 wt %) of a Zr-based stabilizer were incorporated into CaCO3/CaO materials. Moreover, the graphite-casting method was adopted to prepare the Zr-stabilized, CaO-based composite pellets aiming to improve the practicability. The incorporation of the Zr-based stabilizer can effectively resist the sintering of CaO-based composite powders during a high-temperature precalcination process. It is mainly attributed to the large amounts of generated, nanosized CaZrO3 grains possessing desirable antisintering ability evenly distributed within the composites. Particularly, the Zr-stabilized, CaO-based composite pellets containing 30 wt % of CaZrO3 possess a relatively high compression strength of 2.28 ± 0.87 MPa and a desirable thermal storage density of 1.15 GJ/t after 20 cycles. Additionally, the graphite-casted, Zr-stabilized, CaO-based composite pellets have potential to be applied in a large-scale thermochemical energy storage system because the graphite-casting method is easy to be scaled-up.

Flexible phase change film with motion sensing and tactile recognition for wearable thermal management

Lu Liu,Yuang Zhang,Yanan Wu,Shufen Zhang,Bingtao Tang

Phase change materials (PCMs) have gained significant interest in personal thermal management technologies owing to high latent heat capacity and isothermal phase transitions. However, achieving simultaneous thermal and wearing comfort remains a formidable challenge due to their solid rigidity and liquid leakage. In this work, a polyetheramine-based conductive phase change film was developed by introducing ion transport network and tetradecanol as phase change components encapsulated within the skeleton network. The film possesses adjustable heat storage density (79.5–163.4 J/g) and exceptional flexibility at room temperature. On the basis of desirable thermal regulation ability and ideal wearability, the film was successfully applied in the personal thermal management field and effectively regulated the human body temperature. Moreover, the film realized human motion sensing and object tactile recognition in real time with construction of the inner ion transport channels. This successful exploration provides a promising and scalable route towards intelligent wearable thermal management.

Effect of Carbon Nanoadditives on Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate-Based Composite Materials for Low Temperature Chemical Heat Storage

Xixian Yang,Shijie Li,Hongyu Huang,Jun Li,Noriyuki Kobayashi,Mitsuhiro Kubota

Carbon nanospheres (CNSs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as nanoadditives were used to modify lithium hydroxide monohydrate for low temperature chemical heat storage application. The lithium hydroxide monohydrate particles were well dispersed on the nanoscale level, and the diameter of nanoparticles was about 20–30 nm in the case of the carbon nanospheres and 50–100 nm the case of the MWCNTs, as shown by transmission electron microscopy characterization results. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the LiOH·H2O-carbon nano thermochemical composite materials were successfully synthesized. The thermochemical composite materials LiOH·H2O/CNSs (2020 kJ/kg), LiOH·H2O/MWCNTs (1804 kJ/kg), and LiOH·H2O/AC (1236 kJ/kg) exhibited obviously improved heat storage density and higher hydration rate than pure LiOH·H2O (661 kJ/kg), which was shown by thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric (TG-DSC) analysis. It appears that nanocarbon-modified lithium hydroxide monohydrate thermochemical composite materials have a huge potential for the application of low temperature chemical heat storage. Keywords:nanoparticles;energy storage and conversion;lithium hydroxide monohydrate;carbon nanoadditives
