Effects of ethephon and low-temperature treatments on blood oranges (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck): Anthocyanin accumulation and volatile profile changes during storage

Jin Chen,Feifei Liu,Balarabe B. Ismail,Wenjun Wang,Enbo Xu,Haibo Pan,Xingqian Ye,Donghong Liu,Huan Cheng

Health-promoting anthocyanins in blood oranges can be enriched via appropriate postharvest storage conditions. Here, we explored the changes of anthocyanin accumulation and volatile profiles of Tarocco blood oranges ( Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) treated by the low temperature alone and combined with ethephon (2 mg/mL) during 50 days of storage. The combination treatment of ethephon and low temperature (8 o C) significantly enhanced the levels of total anthocyanins (10.91 ± 0.25 mg/100 g) and individual cyanidin derivatives relative to low-temperature treatment alone. The increases of six cyanidin derivatives and three delphinidin derivatives identified by LC-MS/Q-TOF were consistent with the variation in total anthocyanins. Ethyl butanoate, ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl undecanoate, linalool, and d -limonene were identified as main contributors to overall aroma of fresh blood oranges. Volatile compositions and concentrations were decreased under different treatments of ethephon and temperatures, while ethephon could alleviate the loss of activity volatiles during cold storage.

Effect of environmental factors on the aflatoxin production by Aspergillus flavus during storage in upland rice seed using response surface methodology

Yanbin Wang,Yifeng Zhou,Yuchuan Qin,Liling Wang

The purpose of this study was to predict the optimal storage conditions for inhibiting aflatoxin production in upland rice seeds inoculated with Aspergillus flavus . The effects of storage conditions including moisture (A), temperature (B) and incubation time (C) on aflatoxin (AFG1, AFG2, AFB1, AFB2 and AFTOT) production in upland rice seed after inoculation of A. flavus were studied by response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken Design (BBD). The concentration range of AFG1, AFG2, AFB2, AFB1 and AFTOT were 0.031–9.078 μg/kg, 0–2.766 μg/kg, 0.021–3.478 μg/kg, 1.145–43.433 μg/kg and 1.197–58.755 μg/kg, respectively. Analysis of model variance indicated that moisture and incubation time (AC) exhibited an extremely significant interaction effect on AFG1, AFB2, AFB1 and AFTOT ( p  < 0.0001). Multiple regression analysis showed that AFG1, AFG2, AFB1, and AFTOT were the least under the incubation temperature of 35 °C or 15 °C, incubation time less than 15 d, and moisture less than 10% or 10.2%, respectively. After best point prediction and validation, the minimum total aflatoxin (AFTOT) concentration was close to 0 μg/kg under the predicted conditions (A = 35 °C, B = 15 days, C = 10%).

Characterization of volatile flavor profiles in three peach cultivars during postharvest storage at various temperatures using HS-SPME-GC–MS

Xiaoying Li,Gang Li,Haijing Wang,Chunsheng Liu,Chunrui Rong,Fuhang Song,Caixia Chen,Junkai Wu

The changes in volatiles during postharvest storage of three peach cultivars (JC, ZYP9 and ZY8) were tracked under two temperature conditions (25 °C and 4 °C). Overall volatile content significantly decreased during storage over time, specifically with a marked decrease in ester levels, while the relative proportions of alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones increased during cold storage. These changes in volatile composition revealed three distinct storage stages across the cultivars, with the middle stage marking a critical turning point in volatile flavor quality. Among the cultivars, ZYP9 and ZY8 exhibited better adaptability to cold storage than JC. The reduction in key esters, coupled with the increase in alcohols and aldehydes, led to altered aroma profiles and the development of off-flavors in cold-stored peaches. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the dynamic changes in flavor volatiles during postharvest storage and contribute to a deeper understanding of aroma quality in stored peaches.

Effects of pre- and post-harvest konjac glucomannan phosphate ester composite film coating on the volatile profiles of mangoes during storage

Xuehui Li,Chen Zhang,Changrui Liu,Weiqi Luo,Ying Wang,Libin Wang,Norhafizah Abdullah

Post-harvest mangoes are prone to spoilage, and volatiles change accordingly. Konjac glucomannan phosphate composite film (KGMP), as an environmentally friendly polysaccharide-based material, has been shown to possess good film-formation, stability, antibacterial activity, and water vapor permeability. However, the impact of KGMP on the quality and aroma of mangoes during storage remains unclear. Therefore, KGMP was used to coat mangoes before and after harvest. Results indicated that KGMP delayed weight loss, the decline in firmness, and the deterioration of color difference. It also delayed the accumulation of total soluble solids, increased titratable acidity, limited ethylene evolution, and altered aroma quality. A total of 39, 40, and 31 volatiles were detected in JinHwang, Keitt, and Ivory, respectively. Changes in their contents were correlated with ethylene evolution. Although KGMP altered the formation of over 70% of mango volatiles, it had little effect on the total volatile abundance. Pre-KGMP treatment had a more pronounced inhibitory effect on volatile abundances but the increase of key volatiles like ethyl acetate, propyl propanoate, ethyl hexanoate suggested that KGMP treatment could enhance certain flavor characteristics while potentially extending the shelf life. Volatiles such as α-terpinene, diallyl disulfide, and α-phellandrene played key roles in differentiating mangoes under different conditions.

Contact Toxicity and Repellent Efficacy of Kaempferia rotunda L. to Three Stored Product Insects and Synergistic Interactions between Two Major Compounds Benzyl Benzoate and Bornyl Acetate

Yuan-tong Qi,Yi-Kai Yuan,Jia-Wei Zhang,Yue-Shen Du,Kai-Cong Fu,Ming-Jun Cui,Shu-Shan Du

This paper analyzed the chemical constituents of the essential oil (EO) of Kaempferia rotunda L. and the bioactivities of the predominant compounds. Results obtained from GC/MS analysis indicated 14 compounds, which accounted for 96.66% of the total extract. Among them, the most abundant compound was benzyl benzoate (81.13%), followed by bornyl acetate (4.51%). EO from the medicinal plant K. rotunda inhibited the potent toxicity of Lasioderma serricorne and Liposcelis bostrychophila (LD50=17.1μg/adult and 18.6 μg/adult). K. rotunda oil also exerted strong repellency against three target insects at high concentrations. Based on the theory of the grey correlation analysis, EO from K. rotunda performed better than benzyl benzoate but worse than bornyl acetate on the repellency against Tribolium castaneum. Benzyl benzoate possessed excellent contact toxicity with three target insects. Meanwhile, the binary mixture of two main compounds (benzyl benzoate and bornyl acetate) was evaluated for contact toxicity with T.castaneum for the first time. The synergistic effect in natural ratios has been observed, suggesting that unique mechanisms of action should be responsible for EO toxicity. Plant-derived insecticides appear suitable for developing control means against stored product insects.

Acute toxicity of Zanthoxylum bungeanum against two stored product insects and synergistic interactions between two major compounds limonene and linalool

Jun-yu Liang,Yue An,Zhi-bo Hou,Xu-dong Wang,Feng Zhou,Ji Zhang,Jun-long Wang

In order to find and develop new botanical pesticides against storage pests, components of the essential oil (EO) from Zanthoxylum bungeanum were identified by GC-MS and their insecticidal activity against the stored product pests were studied. The EO was obtained by steam distillation. Results showed that EO was rich in limonene (23.67), linalool (21.76) and linalyl anthranilate (10.87). In contact assays, linalool exhibited strongest toxicity to red flour beetle adult (LD50 = 17.06 μg/adult) and larvae (LD50 = 16.42 μg/larvae), and linalool was the most active one against the Lasioderma serricorne (LD50 = 15.36 μg/larvae). Then limonene and linalool showed different levels of fumigant activities against the two insect species. Synergism effect existed in the proportion of contact assays against Tribolium castaneum adults, and additive was observed in the proportion of 7:1 against T. castaneum larvae. This work provides important information for the development and utilization of Z. bungeanum and suggests that the EO of Z. bungeanum has the potential to serve as bio-insecticides for controlling pest damage in stored products.

Changes in Physicochemical Properties and Qualities of Red Brown Rice at Different Storage Temperatures

Tao Wang,Nana She,Mengnan Wang,Bo Zhang,Jiaxing Qin,Jingyuan Dong,Guozhen Fang,Shuo Wang

The effects of storage temperature on the physicochemical properties and qualities of red brown rice were investigated in this study. The samples were vacuum-packed in nylon/polyethylene pouches and stored at 15 °C, 25 °C and 35 °C for 12 weeks. The moisture content decreased as storage time was prolonged. Rice stored at 15 °C and 25 °C had a lower falling range of water content compared to the samples stored at 35 °C. Free fatty acid values increased fastest when samples were stored at a high temperature, and the rise can be effectively delayed at low temperatures. The pH of residual cooking water and adhesiveness decreased, while the heating water absorption rate and hardness increased during storage for red and brown rice. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance results indicate that water molecules migrated, the binding force of H protons became stronger and the bonds between molecules became closer with increased storage duration. Temperature had an obvious correlation with starch granules and protein structure, characterized by a scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Low temperatures significantly retarded those changes. The results indicate that storage temperature is a vital factor affecting the physicochemical properties and qualities of red brown rice and provided reference and theoretical basis for the actual storage of red brown rice.

A robust, storable, and controllable cold-set protein adhesive enabled by Pickering emulsion-templated microcapsules

Zhiqiang Zhu,Menghan Li,Youhui Huang,Jiayi Zhang,Nairong Chen,Feng Li

Cold-set protein adhesives (CPAs) show great advantages in sustainability, eco-friendliness, and cost effectiveness but suffer from weak adhesion and poor storability as imposed by the difficulty in controlling molecular crosslinks. Here, we develop a robust, storable, and controllable CPA enabled by Pickering emulsion-templated microcapsules (PETMs). The PETMs are synthesized by leveraging highly reactive isocyanates as the core phase for cold-set adhesion, and cellulose nanofibers are densified by polyurea as a shell phase to present a responsive, adjustable, and stable nature. Also, inorganic magnesium oxide (MgO) binders are introduced to further strengthen CPA via MgO-protein complexation. Our design not only enables superior cold-set adhesion (0.98 MPa to wood) induced by pressure but also imparts the adhesive with much-improved storability (high-strength maintenance at inferior conditions). This strategy resolves the conflict between high reactivity and long storability in cold-set adhesion, offering a promising direction for the development of high-performance bio-based adhesives satisfying practical demands.

Changes in phenolic content, composition, and antioxidant activity of blood oranges during cold and on-tree storage

Ji-chun ZHAO,Miao AO,Xiao-qin HE,Wei-zhou LI,Li-li DENG,Kai-fang ZENG,Jian MING

Citrus fruits are rich in phenolic compounds that possess several health benefits. However, few studies have focused on the changes in phenolic compounds in citrus fruits during postharvest storage. This study dynamically monitored the phenolic content, components and antioxidant activity of ‘Tarocco’ blood oranges during a period of 12-week cold storage and on-tree storage, respectively. We investigated the alteration mechanism of phenolic compounds in blood oranges by evaluating phenylpropanoid pathway-related enzyme activities and gene expression. Results showed that flavanones were the main phenolic compounds in blood oranges. Both storage methods mainly stimulated the accumulation of phenolic acids to improve total phenolic content, which reached the maximum at week 12. Nonetheless, blood oranges had a higher phenolic content and antioxidant activity under on-tree storage than cold storage. Furthermore, the enzyme activities and gene expression of the phenylpropanoid pathway demonstrated that the accumulation of phenolics in blood oranges during storage was highly related to the activation of the phenylpropanoid pathway. These results demonstrate that on-tree storage is a potential approach for extending the supply period of blood orange from the perspective of phenolic compounds.

Investigation on the impact of quality characteristics and storage stability of foxtail millet induced by air cold plasma

Wang Lang-Hong,Li Zhongyan,Qin Jiale,Huang Yanyan,Zeng Xin-An,Aadil Rana Muhammad

The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of dielectric barrier discharge-air cold plasma (DBD-ACP, 15–35 kV, 2–12 min) on the quality of foxtail millets. The L and b* values were evaluated by a digital colorimeter representing that the color of millets was significantly changed at 25 kV for 4–12 min or at 35 kV for 2–12 min. The results were consistent with the change of total yellow pigment in millets, indicating that DBD-ACP damaged the carotenoids if the treatment condition was too high. The activity of lipoxygenase and lipase, involving the oxidation and hydrolysis of lipids of millet, decreased significantly induced by DBD-ACP. For example, the lipoxygenase and lipase activity of Mizhi millet was decreased from 44.0 to 18.7 U g–1min–1, 56.0–15.1 U/(mg pro) (p<0.05) after being exposed to 25 kV for 2–12 min, respectively. Changes of color, lipoxygenase and lipase activity, and malondialdehyde content of millets were determined during accelerated storage (40 ± 2°C and 75% Relative Humidity) for 15 days after being treated by DBD-ACP under 15 and 25 kV for 4 min. Results showed that millets treated by DBD-ACP at 15 kV kept a better color with lower malondialdehyde content, and lower lipoxygenase and lipase activity compared to control. This work implied that DBD-ACP is an underlying approach for the storage of foxtail millets.
