In this work, nano LiV3O8(LVO) was synthesized using the rheological phase reaction method. Subsequently, after ultrasonic and heat treatment at 300 °C, the nano LVO Ut-300 was obtained and performed as cathode material in Na-ion batteries for the first time. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis indicated that the specific area increased after ultrasonic treatment, which was conducive to the shuttling of sodium ions and enhancement of the electrochemical performance. The X-ray diffraction patterns displayed stable nano LVO Ut-300 material structure and larger interlayer spacing, and SEM and TEM performed more regular morphology. After the electrochemical tests, the nano LVO Ut-300 cathode delivered a high discharge capacity of 153.8 mA h g–1 in the voltage range of 1.8–4.0 V at 30 mA g–1. Meanwhile, the storage mechanism of Na+ was further explored by XPS, and kinetics characteristics of LVO/Na cells were revealed by pseudocapacitance analysis and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) tests. In summary, nano LVO was processed by the ultrasonic method followed by subsequent heat treatment, which could effectively improve the electrochemical behavior of LiV3O8 as cathode materials of secondary Na-ion batteries.

Niobium carbide (NbC) is used as anode material for sodium-ion batteries for the first time. Ball-milled NbC delivers an initial charge capacity of 242 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and a capacity of 126 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g −1 without carbon coating. Cyclic voltammetry curves demonstrate that the pseudocapacitive Na + storage behavior dominates the electrochemical reaction, which is responsible for the good rate capability. Ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the electrochemical reaction between NbC and Na is attributed to an adsorption mechanism.

Developing flexible and binder-free electrodes with superior electrochemical performance is the critical key for flexible electronics and wearable devices . MoTe 2 , a typical two-dimensional (2D) layered material, has emerged as an attractive anode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) because its abundant active sites and rapid Na + transfer and storage. In this work, a series of flexible MoTe 2 /C nanofibers (NFs) are successfully synthesized via a facile electrospinning process with tellurization treatment. As binder and current collector-free anodes, the optimized MoTe 2 /C-600 shows significantly enhanced Na + storage performance, which delivers a high reversible capacity of 294 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and an ultra-long time cycling performance of 5000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . The as-prepared MoTe 2 /C NFs possess double merits of well 1D conductive paths and 3D ion diffusion channels, which effectively boost the electron/Na + transfer. Meanwhile, its excellent flexibility and mechanical strength greatly enhance the cycling stability. More importantly, in-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ transmission electron microscope were employed to demonstrate its structure evolution, revealing that the high capacity of MoTe 2 /C-600 results from the cooperation of Na + intercalation and conversion reaction. The findings of this study provide a better understanding on the sodium storage mechanism of MoTe 2 -based flexible electrodes.

Over the past years, transition metal sulfides, with remarkable redox reversibility, favorable electrical conductivity and superb theoretical capacity, have received considerable attention on the development of electrode materials that are capable of efficient and reversible storage of sodium ions. In this work, three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower-like V 3 S 4 was applied into sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as anode, which was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal process with post-calcination treatment. The electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the as-prepared V 3 S 4 delivers a high reversible capacity of 499 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . Furthermore, even at a high current density of 5 A g −1 , the V 3 S 4 also exhibits an outstanding specific capacity of 299 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 58% compared with the capacity at 0.1 A g −1 , which are superior to those of most vanadium sulfides for SIBs reported previously. Remarkably, the ultrahigh sodium-ion storage performance of V 3 S 4 should be ascribed to the unique nanoflower-like structure assembled by ultrathin nanosheets, which not only provides a large specific surface area, but also offers an adequate cushion to suppress the volume expansion during the sodiation-desodiation processes. More importantly, operando Raman spectra, ex-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to demonstrate the evolution of the structure and chemical valence of V 3 S 4 , revealing that the high capacity of V 3 S 4 results from the cooperation of Na + intercalation and conversion reaction. The findings of this study provide a better understanding on the sodium storage mechanism of V 3 S 4 .

Alloying-type anodes exhibit unique advantages in terms of capacity and working potentials for practical application in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Sb-based nanocrystallites are prepared through a low-cost and large-scalable route by reducing the industrial antimony white (Sb 2 O 3 ) in aqueous solutions under mild conditions and studied as the anode materials of SIBs. Compared with the pristine Sb 2 O 3 and partially reduced Sb/Sb 2 O 3 hybrid, the totally reduced product (pure Sb nanocrystallite) manifests the most steady desodiation potential, highest capacity at around 0.75 V vs. Na + /Na, highest initial Coulombic efficiency, longest cycling life, and fastest charge/discharge rate. The different electrochemical performance of as-prepared materials is discussed from the perspective of Na-storage mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared pure Sb nanocrystallite is more promising than its oxides for practical application in SIBs.

Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) becomes one of the potential anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) thanks to its large theoretical specific capacity and interlayer distance. This study employs pure WS 2 as a case to reveal its unique sodium storage process by ex-situ XPS, which involves the conversion reactions between sodium polysulfide (NaPSs). Furthermore, the pulverization and aggregation of morphological structures triggered by the conversion reaction as well as the shuttling effect of NaPSs can lead to a rapid capacity decay of pure WS 2 . Based on the above phenomenon, the dual optimization strategy is proposed to improve electrochemical properties of the electrode material. On the one hand, the porous hierarchical WS 2 /nitrogen-doped carbon (WS 2 /NC) composites are constructed to strengthen the structural stability and Na + diffusion kinetics; On the other hand, the multifunctional sodium alginate (SA) as a unique binder is used to inhibit NaPSs shuttling, reducing the loss of the active substance and the damage to metal Na. Consequently, the WS 2 /NC electrode with SA binder shows a superior gravimetric/areal capacity of 483 mAh g −1 /0.51 mAh cm −2 after 800 cycles at 2 A g −1 , and a remarkable rate performance up to a gravimetric/areal capacity of 395 mAh g −1 /0.46 mAh cm −2 at 10 A g −1 . This study not only uncovers an interesting capacity fading mechanism of WS 2 but also effectively improves its performance through the dual optimization strategy, which offers a reference for the performance enhancement of other metal sulfide anodes.

Earth-abundant sodium is a promising alternative to lithium in rechargeable batteries. However, graphite, the commercial anode material of lithium-ion batteries, cannot be used for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, carbon block anodes with columnar nanopores constructed from amine-functionalized carbon nanosheets were synthesized using modified polyacrylonitrile as the carbon source through a simple and economical low-temperature pyrolysis process, delivering high reversible capacity, superior rate capability and remarkable cyclic stability. The surface-dominated redox reaction mechanism in Na storage is the origin of the fast kinetics, since the columnar nanopores which are considered as curled and sealed ultrathin nanosheets, like microjars, not only shorten the ion and electron diffusion length, but also expand the redox sites from the surface to the inner part. This is similar to the storage mechanism in supercapacitors. Moreover, density functional theory computations reveal that the high-level amine groups play an important role in Na storage in the low potential region, endowing the block anode material with both high energy and power density.

Transition metal oxides are regarded as the prospective anode materials for next-generation sodium-ion batteries owing to their high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, its low conductivity and large volume variation obstruct its practical applications. In this study, a design of heterostructured SnO 2 /SnSe 2 nanoparticles encapsulated by a carbon shell (C/SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @C) synthesized through a templating method and in-situ gas-phase selenization process. The rich heterostructures and the interfacial effect induced by a built-in electric field significantly accelerate reaction kinetics and enhance the reaction activity. When employed as an anode for sodium-ion batteries , C/SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @C electrodes achieve a superior rate performance (238.4 mAh/g at 5.0 A/g) and cycling performance (422.3 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g after 150 cycles; 289.7 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g after 200 cycles). A quantitative examination into the origin demonstrated that the Na + storage is dominated by the fast surface redox reaction , which endows the heterostructure with a durable rate performance. Moreover, based on a dQ/dV analysis and in situ X-ray diffraction results, the C/SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @C anode has a hybrid mechanism of SnO 2 (conversion and alloying reaction) and SnSe 2 (intercalation, conversion, and alloying reactions). This strategy of the heterostructure design provides a potential route to develop high-performance sodium-ion storage materials and sheds light on the behavior of Na-storage mechanisms.

Among anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), hard carbon (HC) gains more attention due to its low cost, high electronic conductivity, and renewable resources. However, sluggish kinetics result in its low-rate capability and unfavorable cycle stability. Moreover, HC often presents low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), which also limits the utilization of the battery capacity and energy density. Herein, nitrogen and phosphorus dual-doped HC (denoted as NPHC) with network structure is synthesized by a facile interfacial polymerization method, which endows the NPHC with synergistic effects of the enlarged interlayer spacing and improved conductivity. Consequently, the obtained NPHC exhibits a high reversible capacity (286 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), excellent rate capability (144 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ), high ICE (71 %), and remarkable cyclability over 2000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Moreover, the storage mechanism of sodium ions is examined by a series of ex-situ characterizations. Additionally, when coupled with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 as a cathode, the full cell delivers superior cyclability (capacity retains 90 % over 300 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). This work may shed new insight into designing other carbon-based electrode materials for high-performance energy storage. Graphical With hard carbon : we use a facile interfacial polymerization method to prepare hard carbon with N/P dual-doped (NPHC), which shows superb rate capability (286 and 144 mAh g −1 at 0.1 and 10 A g −1 , respectively). Through a series of analyses, NPHCS demonstrates a higher ion diffusion coefficient, capacitive contribution, and conductivity. This confirms that N/P dual-doping is more beneficial to improve electrochemical performance.
