Membrane fouling and regeneration are the key issues for the application of membrane separation (MS) technology. Reactive electrochemical membranes (REMs) exhibited high, stable permeate flux and the function of chemical-free electrochemical regeneration. This study fabricated a micro-filtration REM characterized by a PbO2layer (PbO2-REM) to investigate the electro-triggered anti-fouling and regeneration progress within REMs. The PbO2-REM exhibited a three-dimensional porous structure with a few branch-like micro-pores. The PbO2-REM could alleviate Humic acid (HA) and Bisphenol A (BPA) fouling through electrochemical degradation combined with bubble migration, which achieved the best anti-fouling performance at current density of 4 mA cm−2with 99.2% BPA removal. Regeneration in the electro-backwash (e-BW) mode was found as eight times that in the forward wash and full flux recovery was achieved at a current density of 3 mA cm−2. EIS and simulation study also confirmed complete regeneration by e-BW, which was ascribed to the air–water wash formed by bubble migration and flow. Repeated regeneration tests showed that PbO2-REM was stable for more than five cycles, indicating its high durability for practical uses. Mechanism analysis assisted by finite element simulation illustrated that the high catalytic PbO2layer plays an important role in antifouling and regeneration. Keywords:membrane fouling;reactive electrochemical membrane;PbO2catalytic layer;antifouling;regeneration

The low sulfur utilization and the serious shuttle effect of polysulfides severely hamper practical application of Li-S batteries. Herein, sulfur cathodes with the multi-functional structures, featured with double-layered hollow carbon sphere with up to 50 nm interlayer space (DLHC-50) in situ grown Co-SnS catalytic layer is designed and synthesized for lithium sulfur batteries. Co-SnS/DLHC-50 can encapsulate 72% sulfur, higher than 63% for Co-SnS/DLHC-20 due to the large interlayer spaces of DLHC-50. Meanwhile, polysulfides are also effectively restricted via physical entrapment from DLHC-50 as well as chemical binding between Co-SnS and polysulfides. Benefiting from the well-constructed host framework, Co-SnS/DLHC-50 @S shows higher specific capacity/capacity retention of 760.4 mA h g −1 /72.9% after 500 cycles at 0.5 C, than that of 546.5 mA h g −1 /62.2% and 668.9 mA h g −1 /62.2%, for DLHC-50 @S, and Co-SnS/DLHC-20 @S, respectively. In addition, the strategy can be also extended to prepare other metal oxides (sulfides)/DLHC-50 for wide applications. Therefore, this work demonstrates a promising route to combat some bottlenecks such as low sulfur utilization, and the shuttle effect of polysulfides for Li-S batteries.

A composite catalytically active membrane was prepared focusing on the reduction of membrane mass transfer resistance to achieve a better esterification-pervaporation coupling performance. The effect of membrane preparation conditions on the membrane morphology was first evaluated. Under an optimized membrane preparation conditions, a “sandwich-like” composite membrane with a highly inter-connected sponge-like catalytic layer on a polyvinyl alcohol / polyethersulfone bilayer was obtained. The porosity of the membrane was found to be as high as 81.6%. A simple resistance-in-series model was developed to analyze the mass transfer resistance distribution in a traditional inert membrane reactor (IMR), a catalytically active membrane reactor (CAMR) with dense catalytic layer and a catalytically active membrane reactor with porous catalytic layer, respectively. Results showed that the preparation of a highly porous catalytic layer decreased the resistance of catalytic layer from 48.5% to 20.6% of overall resistances, leading to an enhanced water removal ability for the composite membrane. Finally, reaction-separation coupling experiments in IMR, CAMR with porous catalytic layer and CAMR with dense catalytic layer showed that, with a faster reaction kinetics and water removal rate, CAMR with porous catalytic layer exhibited a best coupling performance.

Lithium-sulfur batteries present a promising potential in meeting the demand of high energy and low-cost energy storage system. However, it suffers from the severe shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and sluggish sulfur chemistry kinetics. Herein, NASICON-type ceramic material Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 is developed to decorate on polypropylene (PP) membrane as a catalysis layer to adsorb lithium polysulfides and accelerate the conversion of sulfur electrochemistry redox reaction. Meanwhile, the sophisticated architecture on separator provides additional lithium ion intercalaction-extraction behavior, which helps to hamper the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides. The collaborative contribution of above virtues endows the Li–S batteries with excellent capacitive performance of 1045.3 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C current density, superior rate capability (590.4 mA h g −1 ) at 4 C although the cycling stability over 400 cycles at 4C is still needed to improve. This work offers an elaborate ceramic coating layer engineering on separator to act as an electro-catalyst role to improve the conversion reversibility and kinetics in lithium sulfur battery with high-energy.

In a direct ammonia proton ceramic fuel cell (DA-PCFC), attaching a catalyst layer on the surface of the ammonia electrode is known to optimize the cell's electrochemical performance and long-term stability. In this study, the Fe catalyst layer is added to the ammonia electrode of the full cell which is prepared with the structure Ni– BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) (support layer)|Ni-BZCYYb (active layer)|BZCYYb|La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ to investigate its impact on the electrochemical performance and stability of the electrode. Under the conditions of 700 °C and 20 ml min −1 ammonia fuel, the peak power densities of cells with and without the Fe layer reach 585.051 and 463.671 mW cm −2 , respectively. It is evident that the addition of the Fe catalytic layer significantly improves the electrochemical performance of the cell. Stability tests are carried out for cells with and without the Fe layer at 650 °C, 0.36 A cm −2 , and 0.32 A cm −2 constant current discharge. After discharge for 313 and 372 h, both cells show good stability, and the discharge curves of the two cells are consistent after 100 h. The high M − N binding energy of the Fe catalytic layer improved the initial performance of the cell, but this improvement is not sustained over the stability.

Anode catalytic layer (ACL) plays a vital role in developing a highly efficient proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer , yet its reaction activity and mass transfer at high operating current density remain a challenge. To address this issue, an innovative configuration design of ACL with three sub-layers is constructed in the form of hierarchical pore size distribution . The hierarchical structure of ACL with increasing pore size away from the membrane exhibits superior electrochemical performance (2.043 V @ 3 A cm −2 ), which is 163 mV lower than that of ACL without pore-forming treatment. The mercury intrusion porosimetry results demonstrate that the porosity increases from 38.8% to 52.3% after the pore-forming treatment. Electrochemical characterization analyses further indicate that the hierarchical structure of ACL enhances active site amount, kinetics, and mass transfer. Therefore, the pore-forming treatment for the anode catalytic layer is a simple and efficient approach to achieving superior electrolysis performance.

In this work, the effect of Nafion ionomer content on the structure and catalytic performance of direct CO polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(CO-PEMFC) by using Rh-N-C single-atom catalyst as the anode catalyst layers was studied. The ionic plaque and roughness of the anode catalyst layers increase with the increase of Nafion ionomer content. Furthermore, the contact angle measurement results show that the hydrophilicity of the anode catalyst layers also increases with the increase of Nafion ionomer content. However, when the Nafion ionomer content is too low, the binding between microporous layers, catalyst layers and membrane cannot meet the requirement for either electric conductivity or mass transfer. While Nafion ionomer content increased above 30%, the content of water in anode is difficult to control. Therefore, it was found that AN 30(30% Nafion ionomer content of anode) is the best level to effectively extend the three-phase boundary and improve CO-PEMFCs performance.

Membrane fouling and low removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) are the main obstacles for the wide application of ultrafiltration membrane technology in water treatment. Herein, we reported the preparation and application of a novel ceramic membrane, which embedded the cobalt oxide in the membrane support layer, and simultaneously loaded the CoAl composite bimetallic oxide on membrane surface layer. The double catalytic layer membrane (CoAl@AM-Co) enabled more efficient DOM removal and membrane fouling mitigation via in situ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation during filtration of actual raw water. Compared to the ceramic membrane with only single catalytic layer, the CoAl@AM-Co/PMS system could achieve much higher normalized membrane flux (0.79 vs. 0.63 and 0.49) and TOC removal (87.47 % vs. 58.35 % and 47.16 %); meanwhile, the molecular weight of DOM in the permeate water would also be significantly decreased. The FT-ICR MS results indicated that the total amount of DOM molecules of the permeate was reduced; the DOM with high H/C wa and low O/C wa value could be more easily removed, accompanied with the production of DOM with higher oxidation and unsaturation degree. Singlet oxygen and surface-bound radicals were proved to play a critical role in mitigating the membrane fouling by DOM. The design of ceramic membrane equipped with double catalytic layer and its application in advanced water purification were systematically elucidated for the first time in this work, which provided a new pathway for efficient treatment of surface water containing DOM.

Electrochemical water treatment is a promising sustainable environmental remediation technology due to its eco-friendliness, ease of control, and significant effectiveness in degrading organic pollutants. The electrical confinement materials (ECMs) exhibit enhanced mass transfer characteristics that substantially reduce energy consumption and reaction time within the system. In this study, the design strategies of ECMs are evaluated from the perspective of trade-offs in equivalent energy drives, including pressure-driven and electric-driven forms. The reaction efficiency and the potential for interface anti-fouling are investigated across confined spatial scales. These findings indicate that, in scenarios characterized by the equivalent energy input principle, the ECMs can effectively address the challenges associated with material spatial scale design. This advancement facilitates the achievement of energy equivalence in the water purification process, particularly in addressing significant application challenges related to loading catalytic layers within confined channels. The result on the anti-fouling potential of ECMs indicates that an interface oxidation mechanism dominated by hydroxyl radicals is more effective in resisting electrode deactivation caused by dissolved natural polymers in the water matrix. This study offers key insights for designing anti-fouling and energy-saving interfaces with efficient mass transfer in water treatment, enhancing the potential of electrochemical methods.

Traditionally, the catalyst layer was formed by spraying a slurry of catalyst, carbon black, and ionomer onto the proton exchange membrane of cells, leading to the catalyst distributed unevenly and the catalytic activity reduced. This study then avoids the slurry spraying process and uses PBO fibrillated fibers to create an integrated self-supporting and effectively dispersing catalyst layer. Detailed experimental results show that nitrogen doping increases the specific surface area by 32.3 % and tensile strain by 25.4 %, with negligible impact on the graphitization of activated carbon paper. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirm the in-situ formation of ORR-active platinum catalysts on the electrode surface. Additionally, it was demonstrated that Pt particles formed by thermal reduction at 700 °C have an average size of 2.2 nm. The self-supporting catalyst layer, loaded with Pt catalysts on nitrogen-doped activated carbon paper with a beating degree of 45 °SR, exhibited the smallest Tafel slope (87.1 mV·dec -1 ). Nitrogen doping enhances the electrochemical performance of activated carbon paper, providing superior Pt loading capacity and catalytic efficiency. This new strategy for the high-performance catalyst layer has potential application in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Chirality—the property of an object wherein it is distinguishable from its mirror image—is of widespread interest in chemistry and biology 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 . Regioselective magnetization of one-dimensional semiconductors enables anisotropic magnetism at room temperature, as well as the manipulation of spin polarization—the properties essential for spintronics and quantum computing technology 7 . To enable oriented magneto-optical functionalities, the growth of magnetic units has to be achieved at targeted locations on a parent nanorod. However, this challenge is yet to be addressed in the case of materials with a large lattice mismatch. Here, we report the regioselective magnetization of nanorods independent of lattice mismatch via buffer intermediate catalytic layers that modify interfacial energetics and promote regioselective growth of otherwise incompatible materials. Using this strategy, we combine materials with distinct lattices, chemical compositions and magnetic properties, that is, a magnetic component (Fe 3 O 4 ) and a series of semiconducting nanorods absorbing across the ultraviolet and visible spectrum at specific locations. The resulting heteronanorods exhibit optical activity as induced by the location-specific magnetic field. The regioselective magnetization strategy presented here enables a path to designing optically active nanomaterials for chirality and spintronics.
