Continuous removal of tetracycline in a photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) with ZnIn2S4 as adsorption and photocatalytic coating layer on PVDF membrane

Bo Gao,Weiping Chen,Jiadong Liu,Jiajun An,Lei Wang,Ying Zhu,Mika Sillanpää

Based on the concept of dynamic membrane and photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR), the dynamic photocatalytic membrane reactor is developed via deposition of ZnIn 2 S 4 suspension on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. Operating with effluent circulating to the photocatalytic membrane reactor, the highest total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 57% is obtained after 3 h reaction with 1.88 mg cm −2 photocatalyst under the flux of 84.06 L m −2  h −1 and light intensity of 50 mW cm −2 . Operating with continuous influent and effluent mode under the flux of 26.09 L m −2  h −1 and light intensity of 50 mW cm −2 , an average of 50% removal efficiency can be maintained during the 24 h photocatalytic reaction with photocatalyst loading of 1.88 mg cm −2 when the initial concentration of tetracycline is 10 mg L −1 . Under the same operating conditions, more than 92% removal efficiency can be maintained during 36 h photocatalytic reaction when lower initial concentration of 100 μg L −1 is applied. After this reaction, the characterizations show that the surface and structure of PVDF basement membrane are not affected.

Preparation of a symmetrical spongy CA-CNS/β-PVDF photocatalytic membrane for antibiotic removal

Mingliang Zhang,Qian Ye,Qianqian Yi,Hanbin Wu,Chao Liu,Bingjie Zhang,Xinyi Li,Bin Yan

Extensive studies have been conducted on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of antibiotics in water environments. However, the separation and recovery of powdered catalysts from water at the end of the reaction remains a great challenge, which hinders the large-scale application of powder photocatalysts. Inspired by the high sustainability, energy efficiency, and cleanliness of photocatalytic technique in antibiotic degradation, we have developed a stable and efficient ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 /β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (CA-CNS/β-PVDF) membrane for antibiotics removal. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the tetracycline (TC) removal rate of the membrane reached 93.12 % within 2 h due to the synergistic effect of the embedded ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 and β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane still maintained excellent photocatalytic performance after five cycles, showing good stability and reusability. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching analyses suggest that the TC degradation efficiency is enhanced by the synergistic effect of free radical-non-free radical mixed pathways (•O 2 , •OH, h + , 1 O 2 ) and 1 O 2 plays an important role in the degradation process. The excellent photocatalytic antibiotics degradation performances of CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane were still obtained in actual water samples under natural sunlight, suggesting its great application potentials. The photocatalytic mechanism, possible degradation intermediates, and degradation pathways are elucidated based on the theoretical calculations and experiments. The toxicity analysis by QSAR shows that the CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane successfully reduces the biological toxicity of three antibiotics (TC, OTC, CIP) during the photocatalysis. In all, our work provides a universal immobilization technique of powdered photocatalysts to improve their wastewater purification efficiencies.

Hydrogel-Based Photothermal-Catalytic Membrane for Efficient Cogeneration of Freshwater and Hydrogen in Membrane Distillation System

Jiawei Sun,Muhammad Usman Farid,Wenlong Xi,Gang Lu,Min Wei Boey,Sai Kishore Ravi,Patrick H.-L. Sit,Alicia Kyoungjin An

Photothermal-catalytic (PTC) process is a promising way to produce freshwater and clean hydrogen by integrating solar-driven desalination and water splitting. However, efficient solar spectrum utilization coupled with effective mass and thermal management poses key challenges in developing multifunctional PTC systems. Here, a highly stable hydrogel membrane (CdS/MX-HM) that incorporates MXene and in-situ generated CdS as the PTC materials into a customized vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) setup is demonstrated. The CdS/MXene composites utilize the full solar spectrum, with MXene contributing to photothermal ability and serving as a co-catalyst to enhance photocatalytic performance, which are effectively integrated into the membrane system. These functional materials are immobilized within the hydrophilic PVA/chitosan hydrogel layer, which creates a supramolecular network that provides excellent stability and protection while offering an interface for PTC processes. Supported by the hydrophobic PTFE membrane substrate, the integrated system enables fast gas transfer to the permeate, completing the dual-function design. Through systematic optimization of membrane structure and operational parameters, the PTC-VMD system achieves a water flux of 1.63 kg m − 2 h − ¹ and a hydrogen production rate of 3099 µmol m − 2 h −1 under one sun irradiation, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable solution for the water-energy nexus challenge.

One-pot in situ synthesis of Cu-SAPO-34/SiC catalytic membrane with enhanced binding strength and chemical resistance for combined removal of NO and dust

Jiahao Chen,Bin Wang,Kai Yuan,Yutang Kang,Shasha Feng,Feng Han,Hongmiao Wu,Rongfei Zhou,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Yiqun Fan,Weihong Xing

The SiC catalytic membrane combining dust removal and denitration can realize the efficacious treatment of atmospheric pollutants. Unfortunately, a large amount of SiO 2 , formed by the partial oxidation of SiC at a high temperature, results in the decreased chemical resistance of SiC catalytic membrane. In addition, the complicated preparation processes and susceptible to loss of catalytic components under harsh conditions restrict the industrial application of SiC catalytic membranes. Here, the Cu-SAPO-34(D)/SiC catalytic membranes were directly prepared via a facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method, which ingeniously utilized the generated SiO 2 as a Si source to participate in the growth of Cu-SAPO-34 zeolites. Excellent binding strength and chemical resistance were simultaneously realized for the SiC catalytic membranes. As a comparison, a Cu-SAPO-34(I)/SiC catalytic membrane was fabricated via the conventional two-step ion-exchange method. The 0.2 Cu-SAPO-34(D)/SiC (Cu molar ratio of 0.2) achieved the best NH 3 -SCR performance among the prepared catalytic membranes for its highly active copper and oxygen species, abundant Lewis acid sites and remarkable redox capacity. When implementing the simultaneous removal of NO and PM, the 0.2 Cu-SAPO-34(D)/SiC catalytic membrane achieved a high NO degradation performance of 98% from 200 to 280 °C, coupled with an excellent PM 0.3 (model dust with average size of 300 nm) filtration performance of 99.99%. These results were better than those of the Cu-SAPO-34(I)/SiC catalytic membrane (92% for NO degradation and 99.98% for PM 0.3 filtration). The one-pot in situ synthesis of Cu-SAPO-34(D)/SiC catalytic membrane with enhanced binding strength and chemical resistance provides a novel strategy for preparation of high-performance SiC catalytic membrane with double benefits.

Membrane chromatography for fast enzyme purification, immobilization and catalysis: A renewable biocatalytic membrane

Jinxin Fan,Jianquan Luo,Yinhua Wan

Enzyme purification and subsequent immobilization usually require multiple steps and consume plenty of chemicals. Traditional dipping incubation operation is lengthy and the interior of porous carrier is not fully exploited due to the diffusion barrier . To solve these problems, one-step enzyme purification and immobilization was developed based on membrane chromatography concept. A membrane adsorber was prepared by polydopamine coating on a PVDF microfiltration membrane (or on a cheap and disposable cellulose filter paper) and subsequent polyethyleneimine grafting, without any solvent usage. Laccase was selectively immobilized on such membrane adsorber (enzyme activity: 39.9±4.4   U/mL; expressed activity: 19.6±3.0%) by directly capturing it from a crude fermentation broth without pH adjustment under flow-through mode. The immobilized laccase had a high purity of 92.2%, while the membrane permeability decreased due to the adsorption of laccase and impurities (“membrane fouling”). Thanks to the dominant convective transport, the enzyme loading was high and much faster than that by dipping incubation (5   min vs. 80   min). Moreover, enzyme reloading on membrane adsorber was easily realized by reversible desorption-adsorption process. The constructed biocatalytic membrane exhibited a commendable reusability for bisphenol A (BPA) removal only driven by its gravity.

Preparation of fibrous ceramic-based catalytic membranes by microwave heating and their structural properties and dust and NO removal characteristics

Linfeng Miao,Shaopeng Pang,Xuetao Wang,Mengjie Liu,Yu Huang,Jing Zhu,Zhongli Ji

Different drying methods were used to prepare catalytic membranes for the simultaneous removal of dust and NO to explore their effect on the distribution of active components, with the structural properties, filtration performance, catalytic performance, and working mechanism of the preferred prepared catalytic membrane systematically investigated. The results indicated that microwave drying, in contrast to traditional electric drying with blasting, effectively inhibited the migration of the precursor solution to achieve uniform loading of active components, thus endowing the catalytic membrane with excellent catalytic activity. Meanwhile, the pore structure of the fibrous ceramic substrate was not almost affected by the loaded catalyst and still exhibited high porosity. These characteristics contributed to the development of a catalytic membrane with good filtration and catalytic performance, as well as superior adaptable NO concentration and filtration velocity properties. Therefore, fibrous ceramic-based catalytic membranes prepared using microwave assistance offer considerable application prospects for integrated purification of high-temperature flue gases. Furthermore, the removal of dust and NO was determined to follow the Eley–Rideal reaction mechanism and surface filtration mechanism of the residual dust cake, respectively.

Effective Decolorization of Rhodamine B by a Ti Foam-Based Photocatalytic Membrane Reactor

Xiaoping Chen,Yuansong Wei,Bohong Chen,Jiaqi Fu

In this study, a Ti foam-based photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) was constructed for rhodamine B (RhB) wastewater decolorization. Ti foam was chosen as a membrane and visible-light-driven C3N4 was chosen as a photocatalyst. The results showed that the decolorization efficiency could be up to 100% with a flow rate of 6.93 mL/min when the PMR was applied in the treatment of a 30 mg/L RhB solution and the concentration of C3N4 was 1 g/L. pH played an important role in the decolorization performance of the PMR. Alkalinity was not conducive to the decolorization of RhB in the PMR, which was mainly due to the property that RhB was difficult to dissolve in an alkaline solution. Membrane fouling was mainly caused by a C3N4 photocatalyst, while the effect of RhB on membrane fouling was negligible. Membrane fouling could be retarded when the PMR was applied for RhB treatment under visible-light irradiation, which was because of photoinduced hydrophilicity of C3N4. The membrane flux could be restored to its initial values after simple ultrasonic cleaning and backwashing. This was due to the large difference between the pore size of Ti foam and the particle size of C3N4 and the super hydrophilicity of Ti foam and C3N4.

Coagulation/co-catalytic membrane integrated system for fouling-resistant and efficient water purification

Yun-Jie Wang,Chen-Xuan Li,Yan Meng,Zhi-Yan Guo,Shuo Cui,Xian-Zhong Fu,Hou-Qi Liu,Wen-Qi Xia,Wen-Wei Li

Low-pressure catalytic membranes allow efficient rejection of particulates and simultaneously removing organics pollutant in water, but the accumulation of dissolved organic matters (DOM) on membrane surface, which cover the catalytic sites and cause membrane fouling, challenges their stable operation in practical wastewater treatment. Here we propose a ferric salt-based coagulation/co-catalytic membrane integrated system that can effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of DOM. Ferric salt (Fe 3+ ) was in the wastewater, serving both as DOM coagulant to lower the membrane fouling and as a co-catalyst with the membrane-embedded MoS 2 nanosheets for perxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutant degradation. The membrane functionalized with 2H-phased MoS 2 nanosheets showed improved hydrophilicity and fouling resistance relative to the blank polysulfone membrane. Attributed to the DOM coagulation and co-catalytic generation of surface-bound radicals for decontamination at membrane surface, the catalytic membrane/PMS/ Fe 3+ system showed much less membrane fouling and 2.6 times higher pollutant degradation rate in wastewater treatment than the catalytic membrane alone. Our work imply a great potential of coagulation/co-catalytic membrane integrated system for water purification application.

Slot-structured catalytic membrane for sustained oily particulate matter removal with a low pressure drop

Jiesong Tan,Yiqing Zeng,Jiahao Chen,Yutang Kang,Jiangxiao Qiao,Feng Zhang,Feng Han,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

Oily particulate matter (PM) filtration faces the problems of high pressure drop and difficult regeneration. Herein, vertical arrays of MnO 2 nanosheets was assembled on Zr doped TiO 2 (Zr-TiO 2 ) nanofibers to construct a core–shell structure MnO 2 @Zr-TiO 2 (CSMT-x) catalytic membranes for highly efficient oily PM filtration and decomposition. The confining effect of the ultrathin MnO 2 nanosheets enhances PM capture efficiency, and the increase of effective contact area between MnO 2 and oily PM accelerate the decomposition of oily PM. The optimized CSMT-3 catalytic membrane exhibited high gas permeability and redox capacity, outperforming the Zr-TiO 2 (Bare T) membrane with over 99.97 % PM filtration efficiency and a low pressure drop at the temperatures of 25–425 °C. The catalytic decomposition of PM prevented the accumulation of particles on the membrane surface, which inhibited the formation of cake layer. Therefore, the CSMT-3 membrane exhibited a slight increase in pressure drop (less than 120 Pa) even after 120 h long-term filtration. This work may contribute to the development of advanced multifunctional membranes for purification of oily PM.

Development of a graphene based anodic membrane for efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of typical antibiotics from water

Yulu Shi,Wangli Yao,Xiaotie Shen,Ruiyi Li,Baoliang Chen,Xiaoying Zhu

Traditional membrane separation processes were ineffective at degrading pollutant molecules, while catalytic reactors often faced inefficiencies due to their inability to simultaneously retain and concentrate reactant molecules. To address these challenges, we synthesized an anodic electrocatalyst (Ti 4 O 7 /SnO 2 -Sb) and combined it with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets to develop a high-performance anodic electrocatalytic membrane (AOM). The AOM's tailored interlayer spacing facilitated simultaneous concentration and electrooxidation of antibiotic pollutants, enabling efficient degradation. At a permeate flux of 7.4 L m −2 ·h −1 , the AOM achieved ∼95 % degradation of chloramphenicol (CAP, 20 mg L −1 ). The corresponding degradation rate constant (k) of 199.70 min −1 was two orders of magnitude higher than that of a conventional reactor without retention capability (1.06 min −1 ). Moreover, the AOM exhibited exceptional energy efficiency and long-term stability, highlighting its potential for advanced wastewater treatment. This innovative design, which leveraged pollutant concentration via the size-sieving effects of confined interlayer spaces, marked a significant advancement in high-performance water treatment technologies.

Dynamic photocatalytic membrane coated with ZnIn2S4 for enhanced photocatalytic performance and antifouling property

Tingting Liu,Lei Wang,Xiu Liu,Chenxu Sun,Yongtao Lv,Rui Miao,Xudong Wang

The dynamic photocatalytic membrane coated with ZnIn 2 S 4 was fabricated to solve the problems of suspended photocatalyst separation and membrane fouling that occur in applying photocatalytic technology and membrane separation technology, respectively. The structural characteristics, photocatalytic performance, and antifouling property of dynamic photocatalytic membranes with different loadings of ZnIn 2 S 4 were systematically investigated. As the loading of photocatalysts increases, a uniform and dense photocatalytic layer formed on the membrane surface, and the surface morphology changed from a protruding structure to an undulating mountain-like structure. The roughness and absorption performance for UV–Vis of dynamic photocatalytic membranes increased because of the formation of a photocatalytic layer while the chemical property and water flux did not change. The removal efficiencies of fluvastatin and total organic carbon by dynamic photocatalytic membranes were significantly increased compared with that of the pristine polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, indicating that the dynamic photocatalytic membranes possessed excellent photocatalytic performance and high stability. Meanwhile, the dynamic photocatalytic membranes exhibited a greater antifouling property than the pristine PVDF membrane because of the formation of the photocatalytic layer on the membrane surface. Therefore, the fabrication of dynamic photocatalytic membrane is an effective method to promote the advantageous combination of photocatalytic technology and membrane separation technology.

Alloying effect of PdCu-TiO2 in photocatalytic membrane reactor for efficient removal of humic acid foulant

Haibo Yin,Junyang Zhang,Yunlong Wang,Xiaoguang Zhao,Yakun Qu,Yue Peng,Hexing Li,Yuning Huo,Junhua Li

Photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR), coupling photocatalysis and membrane separation , has shown a considerable potential in foulant removal. However, the serious membrane fouling and fragile membrane stability still limit the application of current PMR systems. Here, we report a strategy that PdCu alloy deposited on TiO 2 , which is incorporated with polyvinylidene fluoride membrane, achieves high humic acid (HA) rejection efficiency (100%) with enhanced membrane permeation and anti-fouling performance. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that alloying effect of PdCu-TiO 2 plays multiple roles in improving PMR performance: (1) providing the paired Pd-Cu sites for enhancing HA adsorption and transferring electrons from Pd-Cu sites to HA to improve photocatalytic HA removal; (2) inducing the photothermal effect due to the carrier damping, which directly enhances membrane permeation. The remarkable properties of PdCu-TiO 2 membrane in PMR confirm the significance of alloying effect for treating aqueous organic pollutants .
