Reconfigurable magnetic soft machines have a wide range of applications in soft robotics, aerospace, medical devices and flexible electronics. However, the high-precision reconfiguration of magnetically actuated soft machines is hindered by the absence of rational structural design and integrated manufacturing techniques. Here, we report an innovative design and manufacturing approach to realize magnetically actuated high-precision reconfigurability. We present a crease-assisted pixelated design using a mixture of magnetic particles and phase-change medium as the pixel points, with an elastomer as the crease to connect the pixel points, simulating origami. The design of elastomer creases improves pixel stiffness without loss of reconfigurable accuracy, thereby significantly improves the magnetic particle concentration in the pixel. An effective multi-material 3D printing technique is used to achieve the integrated printing of the designed structure. The resulting magnetically actuated soft machines exhibit remarkable capabilities, achieving small curvature bending and precise reconfiguration with weaker actuating magnetic fields (100mT). The superior performance of this design has been confirmed through demonstrations of crawling and rolling machines, magnetically controlled switches, and logic circuits. The work enhances the reconfiguration accuracy of magnetically actuated soft machines, increasing their potential for soft robotics and flexible electronics applications.

Lead-free halide perovskites have shown promising application for indirect X-ray detection as fascinating scintillator. The fabrication of pixelated scintillator films leveraging directional confinement allows high-resolution imaging, yet process complexity and the potential crystal structure damage pose challenges that compromises the corresponding scintillator performance. In this work, a facile in-situ strategy for growing scintillation perovskite of Cs 5 Cu 3 Cl 6 I 2 within anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane is developed as scintillator Cs 5 Cu 3 Cl 6 I 2 @AAO film. The as-fabricated pixelated scintillator array with an enhanced light directional confinement for high-resolution X-ray imaging is demonstrated. The corresponding film achieves a spatial resolution of approximately 20 lp mm −1 and a detection limit of 0.152 Gy·s −1 . Moreover, the Cs 5 Cu 3 Cl 6 I 2 @AAO film performs excellent stability under long-term X-ray irradiation, making it a reliable option for cost-effective pixelated indirect X-ray imaging.

Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent electroluminescent properties and compatibility with inkjet printing processes, which show great potential in applications of pixelated displays. However, the relatively low resolution of the inkjet printing technology limits its further development. In this paper, high-resolution QLEDs were successfully fabricated by electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing. A pixelated quantum dot (QD) emission layer was formed by printing an insulating Teflon mesh on a spin-coated QD layer. The patterned QLEDs show a high resolution of 2540 pixels per inch (PPI), with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 20.29% and brightness of 35816 cd/m2. To further demonstrate its potential in full-color display, the fabrication process for the QD layer was changed from spin-coating to EHD printing. The as-printed Teflon effectively blocked direct contact between the hole transport layer and the electron transport layer, thus preventing leakage currents. As a result, the device showed a resolution of 1692 PPI with a maximum EQE of 15.40%. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the highest resolution and efficiency of pixelated QLEDs using inkjet printing or EHD printing, which demonstrates its huge potential in the application of high-resolution full-color displays.

The molecular ordering and defects in self-assembled soft matter systems are pivotal to their functionality and the advancement of innovative applications. However, achieving precise guidance in the assembly and dynamical modulation of defect structures in an artificial manner remains a formidable challenge in soft matter and interdisciplinary science. Herein, a digitally controlled pixelated holographic lithography system is established to fabricate nanoscale surface reliefs, enabling precise manipulation of smectic liquid crystal lamellar defect structures. These surface reliefs, with customizable topographic features, facilitate versatile smectic soft defect engineering, allowing selective assembly of square focal conic domains and oily streak defects, along with precise control over their periodicity, orientations, and patterned coexistence within micro-regions. The defect structures demonstrate exceptional stability and durability under UV irradiation, providing a robust framework for versatile defect engineering. This work opens a new pathway for manipulating lamellar superstructures in soft matter, offering potential applications in advanced functional materials and devices.

Copper halides are widely used in X-ray imaging because of their green non-toxicity, excellent optical properties and simple preparation. Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 has a higher high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) than CsCu 2 I 3 , but its fluorescence decay time is up to 1.65 μs. Herein, we report a green non-toxicity and low-cost antisolvent preparation of CsCu 2 I 3 microcrystals with bright yellow emission. The fluorescence decay time of the product is as fast as 123 ns and the PLQY is 11.36 %. At the same time, the light yield obtained by this method is 13,454.3 photons/MeV, which is about twice that of the commercial scintillator single crystal Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 (BGO). In order to avoid transverse light scattering of scintillation films and improve the spatial resolution of X-ray imaging, we also propose a template-assisted and negative pressure filling method for the pixelated CsCu 2 I 3 scintillation array based on Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropore template. The crosstalk of scintillation light between each column is effectively suppressed, and the spatial resolution of the pixelated CsCu 2 I 3 /PDMS scintillation array is improved. In conclusion, the CsCu 2 I 3 microcrystals with fast decay, high optical properties and good stability, as well as the pixelated CsCu 2 I 3 /PDMS scintillation array that further improve spatial resolution by avoiding transverse scattering of light, provide a feasible solution for guiding copper halide materials as scintillators for X-ray detection and imaging.

Scintillators with high spatial resolution at a low radiation dose rate are desirable for X-ray medical imaging. A low radiation dose rate can be achieved using a sufficiently thick scintillator layer to absorb the incident X-ray energy completely, however, often at the expense of low spatial resolution due to the issue of optical crosstalk of scintillation light. Therefore, to achieve high sensitivity combined with high-resolution imaging, a thick scintillator with perfect light guiding properties is in high demand. Herein, a new strategy is developed to address this issue by embedding liquid scintillators into lead-containing fiber-optical plates (FOPs, n = 1.5) via the siphon effect. The liquid scintillator is composed of perovskite quantum dots (QDs)/2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and the non-polar high-refractive index (n = 1.66) solvent α-bremnaphthalene. Benefiting from the pixelated and thickness-adjustable scintillators, the proposed CsPbBr3 QDs/PPO liquid scintillator-based X-ray detector achieves a detection limit of 79.1 μGy s−1 and a spatial resolution of 4.6 lp mm−1. In addition, it displays excellent tolerance against radiation (>34 h) and shows outstanding stability under ambient conditions (>160 h). This strategy could also be applied to other liquid scintillators (such as CsPbCl3 QDs and Mn:CsPbCl3 QDs). The combination of high sensitivity, high spatial resolution and stability, easy fabrication and maintenance, and a reusable substrate matrix makes these liquid scintillators a promising candidate for practical X-ray medical imaging applications.

Non-invasive body fluid analysis has been increasingly developed for health monitoring and disease diagnostics. However, some portable devices, as one representative non-invasive application, must require complicated multi-step reactions, expensive photoelectric components, and be difficult for large-scale fabrication. Herein, we have integrated a cascaded enzymatic reaction-mediated multicolor pixelated quantitative system on the wearable microfluidic device (McPiQ-μWAD) for non-invasive and sensitive detection of sweat glucose. This is the first application of non-invasive portable detection using multicolor pixelated quantification, and it’s also the first smartphone-assistant multicolor pixelated analysis for Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) of gold nanorods (Au NRs). The wearable device incorporated laser-ablated microfluidic technology and enzyme-mediated Au NRs etching system for the achievement of rapid and sensitive pixelated quantification. The McPiQ-μWAD successfully transferred sweat glucose into a visual colorful signal in the concentration range of 0.02–2.4 mM (0.36–43.2 mg/dL) by pixelated quantification with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.02 mM (0.36 mg/dL). Compared with commercial glucose kit-based spectrometry, the detection results of real sweat samples from healthy volunteers showed desirable reliability and accuracy based on the McPiQ-μWAD. The presented McPiQ-μWAD provides the high potential to be broadly utilized for non-invasive analyses for applications in family health surveillance and point-of-care tests of emergency.

Mimicking the function of human skin is highly desired for electronic skins (e-skins) to perceive the tactile stimuli by both their intensity and spatial location. The common strategy using pixelated pressure sensor arrays and display panels greatly increases the device complexity and compromises the portability of e-skins. Herein, we tackled this challenge by developing a user-interactive iontronic skin that simultaneously achieves electrical pressure sensing and on-site, nonpixelated pressure mapping visualization. By merging the electrochromic and iontronic pressure sensing units into an integrated multilayer device, the interlayer charge transfer is regulated by applied pressure, which induces both color shifting and a capacitance change. The iontronic skin could visualize the trajectory of dynamic forces and reveal both the intensity and spatial information on various human activities. The integration of dual-mode pressure responsivity, together with the scalable fabrication and explicit signal output, makes the iontronic skin highly promising in biosignal monitoring and human–machine interaction.

A novel self-powered opto-electrically coupled non-pixelated electrochromic device has been presented for dynamic pressure visualization, addressing the limitations of conventional pressure sensors, such as rigid systems, high power consumption, and environmental sensitivity. The device integrates a flexible architecture with a WO 3 @Eu 3 ⁺/Ag nanowires (Ag NWs) composite layer, enabling dual-mode pressure-responsive optical modulation: electrochromism under mechanical pressure and photoluminescence for dark-environment visualization. By leveraging the redox potential difference between, and liquid metal (InSnBi) electrodes, the device achieves self-powered color switching without external energy input. An air gap design isolates the electrolyte and electrochromic layers, ensuring localized pressure-triggered color changes. Experimental results demonstrate a high spatial resolution (200 µm), a broad pressure response range (0–25 N), and stable pattern retention for 30 days. The dual-mode operation, combining pressure-induced electrochromism and rare-earth photoluminescence, enables applications in biometric authentication, dynamic art preservation, and multilevel optical encryption. This work advances flexible sensing technology by merging mechanical and optical biometric features, offering a low-power, environmentally adaptable solution for real-time pressure visualization.

Stimuli-responsive structural coloration allows the color change of soft substrates in response to environmental stimuli such as heat, humidity, and solvents. Such color-changing systems enable smart soft devices, such as the camouflageable skin of soft robots or chromatic sensors in wearable devices. However, individually and independently programmable stimuli-responsive color pixels remain significant challenges among the existing color-changing soft materials and devices, which are crucial for dynamic display. Inspired by the dual-color concavities on butterfly wings, a morphable concavity array to pixelate the structural color of two-dimensional photonic crystal elastomer and achieve individually and independently addressable stimuli-responsive color pixels is designed. The morphable concavity can convert its surface between concave and flat upon changes in the solvent and temperature, accompanied by angle-dependent color-shifting. Through multichannel microfluidics, the color of each concavity can be controllably switched. Based on the system, the dynamic display by forming reversibly editable letters and patterns for anti-counterfeiting and encryption are demonstrated. It is believed that the strategy of pixelating optical properties through locally altering surface topography can inspire the design of new transformable optical devices, such as artificial compound eyes or crystalline lenses for biomimetic and robotic applications.
