Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers demonstrate considerable potential for application in industries such as manufacturing, medicine, construction, and daily life due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, their mechanical properties and thermal stability still require further improvement. Inspired by the molecular structure of mussel foot proteins and their reinforcement mechanisms, we synthesized PVA grafted with various amounts of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DBA) via an aldol condensation reaction under acidic conditions. We then prepared a series of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde modified polyvinyl alcohol (DPVA) fibers using wet spinning technology. The results showed that the introduction of catechol groups disrupted the hydrogen bonding and crystallinity among PVA molecules, leading to a decrease in the viscosity of the spinning solution, fiber crystallinity, and the maximum thermal decomposition rate. However, during the formation of DPVA fibers, π-π interactions and an enhanced hydrogen bond network improved the tensile strength of the fibers, increasing it from 2.8 cN/dtex to 6.64 cN/dtex. Additionally, the cross-sectional morphology of the fibers changed from a kidney shape to a flat kidney shape, further indicating an improvement in their structural characteristics. This study's results provide novel insights into how the mechanical properties of PVA-based fibers can be optimized.

The dopamine modification strategy has received extensive attention in water treatment due to its simple and gentle preparation process, excellent adhesion, and good secondary reactivity. Further research has found that compounds containing the catechol groups can react with the amino-containing silane coupling agents under mild conditions to form dopamine-like hydrophilic coatings on the surface of hydrophobic membranes or fibers. This paper used cheap polypropylene melt-blown nonwovens as the substrate to prepare a large-capacity dye adsorbent PP-(CK-Fe). Specifically, catechol (CA) and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550) were used to form a codeposited coating on the substrate. Then, we used the secondary reactivity of the coating to grow iron-based oxides in situ. The adsorbent had good adsorption performance on anionic dyes at the initial pH of the dye solution, including Orange II (380 mg/g), methyl orange (268 mg/g), Congo red (294 mg/g), and carmine (263 mg/g). However, it had almost no adsorption effect on cationic dyes at the initial pH, including methylene blue and Rhodamine B. We chose Orange II to explore the possible adsorption mechanism. The results confirmed that the adsorbent had good adsorption performance at pH 3–11. The adsorption process tended to be monolayer chemical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of Orange II was 515.46 mg/g under optimal conditions. This study also confirmed that the codeposition coating constructed with polyphenol and amino-containing silane coupling agents had a secondary reactivity similar to the dopamine coating.

As one of the five major engineering plastics, polycarbonate (PC) has been applied in many industrial fields. However, its poor wear- and UV- resistance greatly limit its further promotion. Inspired by the dual benefits of inorganic–organic hybrid filler, in this study, we developed a novel type of catechol group- and nano silica-containing reinforcing filler (CFNS) for the preparation of wear- and UV-resistant PC-based composite films. With a low level of filler content (1%), the coefficient of friction (COF) was distinctly reduced from 0.14 (neat PC film) to 0.06 (composite film), benefiting from a wear-resistant surface layer. On the basis of ensuring high and stable transmittance for visible light, the composite films also exhibit strengthened capacity of UV shielding for the waveband from 293 to 400 nm. In addition, the general performance of composite films including tensile strength, tensile modulus, and thermal stability have also been improved in different degrees. Therefore, the composite films reinforced by CFNS are highly promising for a wide range of applications, ascribed to their improved general properties as well as two additional functions of wear- and UV-resistance.

Instant and strong adhesion to underwater adherends is a big challenge due to the continuous interference of water. Mussel foot protein-bioinspired catechol-based adhesives have garnered great interest in addressing this issue. Herein, a novel self-made catecholic compound with a long aliphatic chain was utilized to prepare thin (∼0.07 mm) and optically transparent (>80%) wet/underwater adhesive tapes by UV-initiated polymerization. Its adhesion activity was water-triggered, fast (<1 min), and strong (adhesion strength to porcine skin: ∼1.99 MPa; interfacial toughness: ∼610 J/m2, burst pressure: ∼1950 mmHg). The effect of the catechol/phenol group and positively charged moiety on the wet/underwater adhesion to abiotic/biotic substrates was investigated. On the wet/underwater adherends, the tape with catechol groups presented much higher interfacial toughness, adhesion strength, and burst pressure than the analogous tape with phenol groups. The tape with both the catechol group and cationic polyelectrolyte chitosan had a more impressive improvement in its adhesion to wet/underwater biological tissues than to abiotic substrates. Therefore, catechol and a positive moiety in the tape would synergistically enhance its wet/underwater adhesion to various substrates, especially to biological tissues. The instant, strong, and noncytotoxic tape may provide applications in underwater adhesion for sealing and wound closure.

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) represent a transition material combining favorable features of thermosets and thermoplastics. However, it is still a huge challenge to simultaneously achieve fast reprocessability and high performance for CANs. Here, we designed catechol-based acetal CANs to achieve continuous reprocessing without sacrificing thermal and mechanical properties. A small-molecule model study demonstrated the significantly accelerated acetal exchange by neighboring group participation (NGP) of phenolic hydroxyl. Using this internally catalyzed acetal chemistry, a series of CANs with a broad range of properties were simply prepared from bio-based epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and tri(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether (TEGVE) via one-step “click” cross-linking without using catalysts or releasing small-molecule byproducts. The dynamic nature of the CANs was confirmed via stress relaxation and multiple recycling methods including extrusion. While the dense cross-link density and high rigidity of the network provided high solvent resistance and mechanical properties. This work provides a promising and practical method to produce fast-reprocessing dynamic covalent polymer networks with dense cross-link density and superior performance.

Temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) polymers have been studied in many fields due to their “on–off” adjustable properties under temperature stimulation. In this work, the “on–off” mechanism for poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-dopamine methacrylamide) (PNIPAM-co-DMA) microgels for cell culture and nonenzymatic cell harvest was explored. Thermoresponsive surfaces were developed on silica wafers using microgels with different DMA contents using a simple spin-coating method. Experiments showed that the microgels showed an “on” state above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and PNIPAM-co-DMA (PND) microgels shrank to expose catechol groups for enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation. Conversely, the microgels showed an “off” state below LCST, and the hydrophobic and cell-repellent properties of DMA contributed to the rapid hydration of microgels for accelerated cell disassociation. The developed microgels presented DMA content and distribution-related cell detachment efficiency, with PND (100:0.5) and PND (100:2) showing better results. The failure of cell harvest caused by too much DMA restricted the shrinkage and swelling of microgels due to the strong hydrogen-bonding adhesion of catechol moieties for PND (100:10). Overall, the presented strategy exhibits a wide-ranging utility to construct thermoresponsive surfaces with “on–off” functionalization by introducing catechol chemical monomers.

Biomimetic adhesives inspired by mussels are promising bonding materials in both dry and wet conditions. However, few such materials are suitable for application as underwater construction adhesives, where much higher bonding performance (≥5 MPa) and scale production are urgently required. Herein, a biomimetic catechol-based Mannich base epoxy curing agent (CMB) was prepared by the one-pot condensation reaction of 4- tert -butylcatechol, paraformaldehyde, and diethylene triamine on a hectogram scale. Further, a fast-curing two-part epoxy adhesive was designed by combining the CMB with the diglycidyl ether of hydrogenated bisphenol A. Benefiting from the independent crosslink-point strategy and synergic conditions, the CMB epoxy adhesive could maintain its dry bonding strength (9.0 MPa), even in a 4 °C underwater environment, which is the highest value that has been achieved to the best of our knowledge. Moreover, with a moderate post-curing process, the dry bonding strength on sandblasted Al (20.4 MPa) matches that were obtained on anodized Al and siloxane-treated Al, on which the obtained bonding strength represents the upper limit of an adhesive because of their well-known optimal surfaces for bonding. To the best of our knowledge, no previously reported catechol-assisted adhesive could achieve the same strength as siloxane-treated surfaces. Accelerated ageing experiments showed that the catechol groups had good endurance under hydrothermal conditions. The developed CMB epoxy adhesive has great potential as a high-performance structural adhesive and the findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the important chemical properties necessary for the design of biomimetic adhesives.

Tissue adhesives have attracted significant interest in the field of hemostasis. However, challenges including weak tissue adhesion, inadequate biocompatibility, and instability limit their clinical applications. Here, we have developed a gelatin-DOPA-knob/fibrinogen hydrogel inspired by the fibrin polymerization and mussel adhesion, resulting in a biocompatible bioadhesive with outstanding adhesion performance and great storage stability. This strategy involves modifying gelatin with knob peptides and catechol groups inducing crosslinking with fibrinogen to form a hydrogel via knob-hole interactions, and enhancing interfacial adhesion performance by interacting with the blood-covered tissue through catechol groups and knob peptides. This hydrogel exhibits rapid gelation, enhanced mechanical strength and adhesion properties, compared to the commonly used fibrin glue in surgery. The hydrogel significantly reduces the time required to hemostasis and the amount of blood loss in severe hemorrhage models. It ensures superior hemostatic efficacy, excellent biocompatibility, and long-term storage stability, which holds significant promise in medical settings.

Early intervention during intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) plays a vital role in inhibiting its deterioration and activating the regenerative process. Aiming at the high oxidative stress (OS) in the IDD microenvironment, a core–shell structured nanozyme composed of Co-doped NiO nanoparticle (CNO) as the core encapsulated with a polydopamine (PDA) shell, named PDA@CNO, was constructed, hoping to regulate the pathological environment. The results indicated that the coexistence of abundant Ni3+/Ni2+and Co3+/Co2+redox couples in CNO provided rich catalytic sites; meanwhile, the quinone and catechol groups in the PDA shell could enable the proton-coupled electron transfer, thus endowing the PDA@CNO nanozyme with multiple antioxidative enzyme-like activities to scavenge •O2–, H2O2, and •OH efficiently. Under OS conditions in vitro, PDA@CNO could effectively reduce the intracellular ROS in nucleus pulposus (NP) into friendly H2O and O2, to protect NP cells from stagnant proliferation, abnormal metabolism (senescence, mitochondria dysfunction, and impaired redox homeostasis), and inflammation, thereby reconstructing the extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis. The in vivo local injection experiments further proved the desirable therapeutic effects of the PDA@CNO nanozyme in a rat IDD model, suggesting great potential in prohibiting IDD from deterioration.

Traditional human emotion recognition is based on electroencephalogram (EEG) data collection technologies which rely on plenty of rigid electrodes and lack anti-interference, wearing comfort, and portability. Moreover, a significant distribution difference in EEG data also results in low classification accuracy. Here, on-skin biosensors with adhesive and hydrophobic bilayer hydrogel (AHBH) as interfaces for high accuracy emotion classification are proposed. The AHBH achieves remarkable adhesion (59.7 N m −1 ) by combining the adhesion mechanism of catechol groups and electrostatic attraction. Meanwhile, based on the synergistic effects of hydrophobic group rearrangements and surface energy reduction, the AHB-hydrophobic layer exhibits 133.87° water contact angles through hydrophobic treatment of only 0.5 h. Hydrogen and electrostatic bonds are also introduced to form a seamless adhesive-hydrophobic hydrogel interface and inhibit adhesion attenuation, respectively. With the AHBH as an ideal device/skin interface, the biosensor can reliably collect high-quality electrophysiological signals even under vibration, sweating, and long-lasting monitoring condition. Furthermore, the on-skin electrodes, data processing, and wireless modules are integrated into a portable headband for EEG-based emotion classification. A domain adaptive neural network based on the transfer learning technique is introduced to alleviate the effect of domain shift and achieve high classification accuracy.

Artificial electric skin, which is capable of strongly adhering to different parts of human bodies and precisely detect different types of human motions, shows great promise for biomedical prosthetics, human/machine interfaces, wearable devices and soft robotics. In this study, biocompatible ionic gels with shape-adaptability and skin-adhering are produced through in situ polymerizing (3-acrylamidophenyl) boronic acid and acrylamide in the presence of chitosan containing catechol groups. The chemical cross-linkers are capable of modulating their elasticity, toughness and stretching tolerance. The reversible cross-linkers of H-bonding and dynamic covalent bonds endow the gels not only with strong adhering strength on different surfaces (including skin) and rapid self-healing in minutes, but also with large stretchability (e.g., 12–200 times of tensile length) and plasticity for shape-adaptability on irregular surfaces. Thus, by introducing mussel-inspired catechol groups into biomass-based macromolecules, a novel type of artificial ionic skin is designed with high sensitivity in combination with mechanical stretchability and bio-compatibility. They will promise great potential as (but not limited to) the skin-friendly sensor to detect various human motions with high accuracy and repeatability.
