A reversible long-life hybrid Na-CO 2 battery is proposed by using Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 solid electrolyte as a separator, N-doped single-wall carbon nanohorns (N-SWCNH) as a catalyst and the saturated NaCl solution as an aqueous catholyte. The Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 ceramic not only has high Na + ion conductivity, but also prevents potential contamination from H 2 O and CO 2 to sodium anode, and avoids the internal short-circuit touch of Na dendrite with cathode, improving the safety of the battery. Benefiting from N dopants , unique internal and interstitial nanoporous structures, N-SWCNH have large surface area for discharge products accumulation, offer substantial structural defect sites for CO 2 adsorption and electron transfer , contributing to high catalytic activity and reversibility . Most importantly, the hybrid Na-CO 2 battery with aqueous electrolyte facilitates the dissolution of the insulated discharge product, which overwhelmingly improves the discharge and charge reactions kinetics. Na-CO 2 batteries exhibit a low charging voltage of 2.62 V and a small voltage gap of 0.49 V at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 , a superior discharge capacity of 2293 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 , a high round trip efficiency of ~68.7% after 300 cycles. In-situ Raman and ex-suit XRD analyses convincingly show that NaHCO 3 and carbon are the main discharge products.

High-capacity power battery can be attained through the elevation of the cut-off voltage for LiNi 0.83 Co 0.12 Mn 0.05 O 2 high-nickel material. Nevertheless, unstable lattice oxygen would be released during the lithium deep extraction. To solve the above issues, the electronic structure is reconstructed by substituting Li + ions with Y 3+ ions. The dopant within the Li layer could transfer electrons to the adjacent lattice oxygen. Subsequently, the accumulated electrons in the oxygen site are transferred to nickel of highly valence state under the action of the reduction coupling mechanism. The modified strategy suppresses the generation of oxygen defects by regulating the local electronic structure, but more importantly, it reduces the concentration of highly reactive Ni 4+ species during the charging state, thus avoiding the evolution of an unexpected phase transition. Strengthening the coupling strength between the lithium layers and transition metal layers finally realizes the fast-charging performance improvement and the cycling stability enhancement under high voltage.

A high energy efficiency, low charging voltage cathode is of great significance for the development of non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries. Non-stoichiometric manganese dioxide (MnO2-x) and chromium trioxide (Cr2O3) are known to have good catalytic activities for the discharging and charging processes, respectively. In this work, we prepared a cathode based on Cr2O3 decorated MnO2-x nanosheets via a simple anodic electrodeposition-electrostatic adsorption-calcination process. This combined fabrication process allowed the simultaneous introduction of abundant oxygen vacancies and trivalent manganese into the MnO2-x nanosheets, with a uniform load of a small amount of Cr2O3 on the surface of the MnO2-x nanosheets. Therefore, the Cr2O3/MnO2-x electrode exhibited a high catalytic effect for both discharging and charging, while providing high energy efficiency and low charge voltage. Experimental results show that the as-prepared Cr2O3/MnO2-x cathode could provide a specific capacity of 6,779 mA·h·g−1 with a terminal charge voltage of 3.84 V, and energy efficiency of 78%, at a current density of 200 mA·g−1. The Cr2O3/MnO2-x electrode also showed good rate capability and cycle stability. All the results suggest that the as-prepared Cr2O3/MnO2-x nanosheet electrode has great prospects in non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries.

Graphical Hybrid theory : A hybrid perovskite material, 4,4’-ethylenedipyridinium lead bromide, is assembled onto carbon material to function as photoelectrode of the Li-oxygen battery, leading to a reduced overpotential of 0.5 V compared to the Li-oxygen battery without illumination (1.3 V). The overpotential can be maintained lower than 0.9 V after cycling for 170 h. Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have emerged in the last decade as promising semiconductors due to the excellent optoelectronic properties. This kind of perovskites exhibited respectable photocatalytic activities toward potential application in battery; however, the instability issue still hindered their practical use. Herein, a hybrid perovskite material, 4,4’-ethylenedipyridinium lead bromide [(4,4’-EDP)Pb 2 Br 6 ], was assembled onto the carbon materials to function as photoelectrode of the Li-oxygen battery. The strong cation-π interactions between the A-site cations enabled this hybrid perovskite to endure the cycling process as well as the exposure to battery electrolyte and oxygen. Benefitting from the photo-generated carriers of the photoelectrode under illumination, the formation/decomposition of the discharge product was accelerated, thus leading to a reduced overpotential from 1.3 V to an optimized 0.5 V compared to the Li-oxygen battery without illumination. The overpotential could be maintained lower than 0.9 V after cycling for 170 h. Furthermore, when exposed to the sunlight, the charging voltage was reduced by over 0.2 V. The intrinsic stability and strong light absorption of perovskites together with the optimized perovskite/carbon cathode interfaces contributed to the improved performance under different light sources without complex material design, which shed light on the exploration of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites in Li-oxygen battery applications.

High-energy-density Li-CO2batteries are promising candidates for large-capacity energy storage systems. However, the development of Li-CO2batteries has been hindered by low cycle life and high overpotential. In this study, we propose a CO2-based thermoplastic polyurethane (CO2-based TPU) with CO2adsorption properties and excellent self-healing performance to replace traditional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the cathode binder. The CO2-based TPU enhances the interfacial concentration of CO2at the cathode/electrolyte interfaces, effectively increasing the discharge voltage and lowering the charge voltage of Li-CO2batteries. Moreover, the CO2fixed by urethane groups (-NH-COO-) in the CO2-based TPU are difficult to shuttle to and corrode the Li anode, minimizing CO2side reactions with lithium metal and improving the cycling performance of Li-CO2batteries. In this work, Li-CO2batteries with CO2-based TPU as the multifunctional binders exhibit stable cycling performance for 52 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g−1, with a distinctly lower polarization voltage than PVDF bound Li-CO2batteries.
