Bright structural colors with an angular-independent character are in increasing demand in many fields such as pigments, buildings, sensors, color displays, and anti-counterfeiting labels. However, the structural colors produced by amorphous colloidal assemblies with low refractive index contrast or without black additives often exhibit low color visibility and low liquid-bleaching resistibility. Herein, large-scale and angle-independent structural colors were constructed from Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal quasi-amorphous arrays (QAAs) prepared through a rapid “spraying” process. Due to the high-refractive-index and intrinsic black nature of Fe3O4, the coatings exhibit high brightness of structural colors even on white substrates under ambient lighting conditions. Moreover, as-obtained structural colors possess the ability of antiliquid bleaching and solvent-responsiveness. More importantly, flexible Fe3O4@SiO2/PDMS photonic paper can be fabricated by permeation of PDMS into the voids of Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal QAAs. This QAAs-based photonic paper shows the ability to infuse silicone oils into its structure, locally swelling it and changing the reflected color. In turn, the resulting colored patterns can be easily erased by applying ethanol or low molecular weight silicone oils. The as-prepared photonic paper exhibits excellent durability and is rewritable at least 50 times without any significant changes in performance. Compared with the traditional long-range ordered photonic crystals, the rapidly prepared QAAs-based photonic coatings have unique advantages in the applications of permanents, color coatings, color printing, liquid colorimetric sensors, rewritable photonic paper, etc. because of the good structural color performance and are suitable for rapid and large-area preparation.

Chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) structural colored materials are the focus of extensive research in recent years on account of their unique helical structure and excellent optical properties . However, the general weak mechanical properties and poor water-resistance of CNC limit its utility. Here, we fabricated highly flexible, water-resistant chiral nematic CNC/Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate(PEGDA) composite films , which was realized by co-assembling CNC and PEGDA precursor then via UV curing to construct a three-dimensional crosslinking network. Due to the water stimulus-responsive feature of the CNC and PEGDA, the CNC/PEGDA (8/2) composite film could be used as a water-content detector, photonic paper. In addition, it could produce different crosslinking degrees by coating the PEGMA solution or not, which could be applied to an anti-counterfeit label. The composite film with excellent stability of cycles is expected to be a promising candidate in optical sensors, display, and security fields.

Multi-responsive re-writable photonic paper (MRPP) with inverse opal structure was prepared by introducing [poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-poly(dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate)-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)] (PHEMA-PDMAEMA-PNIPAM) multi-responsive gel (MRH) into silica (SiO 2 ) photonic crystal (PC) template. First, monomers such as HEMA, DMAEMA, and NIPAM were filled into the SiO 2 PC template. Then, MRPP with dynamic responsive color change capability was prepared by ultraviolet (UV) curing and hydrofluoric (HF) etching. MRPP has temperature, pH, ionic strength, and ethanol concertration responsiveness, fast wetting capability (∼1.4 s), strong re-writability (∼600 cycles), and the ability to use inorganic salt solution as an environmental-friendly ink to achieve panchromatic adjustment. Based on the multiple responsiveness of MRPP and its difference in solvent volatility, a time–temperature dependent optical anti-counterfeiting system with higher security level and fast identification of encryption was successfully constructed. The excellent performance of MRPP indicates its great application value in the field of re-writable photonic paper as well as information security.

The construction of invisible patterns via high-resolution printing and the independent encoding/decoding of complex information can lead to promising applications in steganography and watermarking for optical encryption. Herein, a rewritable chiral photonic paper formed by cholesteric cellulose nanocrystals and polycation is reported. The chemically crosslinked polycation network interpenetrates in the cholesteric structure while retaining the optical properties of the photonic crystals. The film exhibits controllable wettability via anion exchange, leading to extremely low contrast in the dry state but high contrast by a rapid wetting response. Triple invisible information is independently encoded on the films, including invisible patterns caused by reversible counterion-controlled wettability, permanent fluorescent labels based on fluorescent counterions, and polarization-dependent structural colors based on cholesteric structures. Full color patterns can be reversibly constructed via inkjet printing, with a high resolution of 100 µm. In addition, the circular polarization characteristics of the cellulose nanocrystals, liquid crystals, endow the system with complex and independent responses, realizing a wetting/polarization double-key decryption. This work provides a simple and effective optical technique for coding complex information on a single material platform and expands the techniques available to achieve invisible patterns for sensing and anti-counterfeiting.

Rapidly responsive and flexible photonic papers are manufactured by coassembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) latex for fully taking advantage of the chiral nematic structure of CNCs and the flexibility of WPU elastomer. The resulting CNC/WPU composite papers exhibit not only tunable iridescent colors by adjusting the helical pitch size, but also instant optical responses to water and wet gas, ascribed to the easy chain movement of the elastomeric WPU that does not restrict the fast water absorption-induced swelling of CNCs. By choosing water or NaCl aqueous solutions as inks, the colorful patterns on the CNC/WPU photonic paper can be made temporary, durable, or even disguisable. In addition, the photonic paper is simultaneously rewritable for all these three types of patterns, and the disguisable patterns, which are invisible at normal times and show up under stimuli, exhibit a quick reveal conversion just by exhaling on the paper. The rewritability, rapid responsibility, easy fabrication, and the eco-friendly nature of the inks make the flexible photonic paper/ink combination highly promising in sensors, displays, and photonic circuits.
