In recent years, perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been considered novel and potentially valuable optical gain materials that can generate relatively low thresholds and stable stimulated emissions in various external environments. Here, for the first time, an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) film-protected metal halide perovskite (Cs 4 PbBr 6 ) solid powder was successfully synthesized, and its photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) value was as high as 61%. In addition, because the Cs 4 PbBr 6 @EVA composite film has excellent optical gain performance, this work explored the optical gain of the Cs 4 PbBr 6 @EVA composite film under 800 nm femtosecond (fs) laser excitation. The experimental results show that the Cs 4 PbBr 6 @EVA composite film has a low threshold (0.89 mJ/cm 2 ) and stable stimulated emission and generates amplified spontaneous emissions (ASEs) at 544 nm. In addition, the application of Cs 4 PbBr 6 @EVA composite film in the field of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) has also been studied. The color gamut of this Cs 4 PbBr 6 @EVA composite film is as high as 124.7% of the National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) 1953 standard color gamut and covers 92.8% of the Rec. 2020 standard color gamut. This work proposes a simple method to solve the problem of the poor stability of perovskite solid powder, and the prepared Cs 4 PbBr 6 @EVA composite film shows significant promise in WLED and laser applications.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have attracted extensive attention for various applications due to their hallmark optoelectronic properties. However, PQD gain materials are usually needed to be integrated with an external cavity to acquire effective optical feedback for lasing oscillation, which generally suffers from stringent fabrication procedures and the destruction of their pristine gain performance. In this work, we propose an approach to realize a new class of random lasers that are constructed by in situ precipitating perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Such random lasers make full use of the combined merits of MOFs showing a high refractive index and a broad transmission window and that of PQDs exhibiting high optical gain. A lead-based MOF is utilized as a matrix, which allows us to grow PQDs at the Pb2+ sites in situ and thus produce high-density PQDs gain in MOFs. We experimentally demonstrate low-threshold multicolor random lasers achieved in the visible spectral range with different wavelengths through compositional modulation in the nanoporous environment of MOF nanostructures and illustrate potential applications of the developed PQDs@MOFs random laser as the illumination source in the speckle-free optical imaging. This study will pave the way for the construction of perovskite-based lasing in multifunctional systems.

Due to their non-toxicity, excellent thermal stability and optical properties , ternary copper halide perovskites , such as Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and CsCu 2 I 3 , have been widely used in light-emitting devices (LEDs), UV and X-ray scintillation detectors. However, laser devices based on these materials have not been fully investigated. In this work, we demonstrated thermally stable Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 thin films , deposited by dual-source co-evaporation, possessing a photo-luminescence quantum yield (PLQY) up to 50.62%. Using the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 as gain media, optically pumped perovskite vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (Pe-VCSELs) have been fabricated, integrating with a pair of distributed reflectors (DBRs), and shown lasing at 440 nm with a threshold of ∼1.12 μJ/cm 2 pumped by a 288 nm fs laser. Furthermore, a monolithic dual-wavelength laser, with lasing wavelengths of 458.8 nm and 505.6 nm, has been achieved by depositing an additional gain layer and DBR mirror. Those results indicate that the lead-free ternary copper halide perovskites could be suitable as laser gain materials.

The investigation of fabricating ultra-compact solid-state dye laser (SSDL) using N'N-dimethylformamide (DMF) modified poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the polymeric matrix was carried out. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was introduced to manipulate the polymerization process of PMMA. By adjusting the additive amount of the Fe III complex (mixture of FeCl 3 and 2,2’-Bipyridyl (bPy)), the polymerization degree of PMMA was coordinated to gain better amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties of the embedded laser dye, Lumogen Orange 240 (LO). The ASE threshold of the Fe III complex catalyzed sample decreased as high as ~75%, from 225.3 ± 11.2 μJ cm −2 to 57.2 ± 2.9 μJ cm −2 , comparing to that measured in common PMMA matrix. Additionally, a secondary dye, Stilbene 420 was added in the system for sharing excess excitation energy and oxidization damage, to overcome the photostability problem caused by the oxygen-rich solvent, DMF. The operational lifetime of the resulted sample increased 200%, to the similar level of that without DMF component. Finally, by mechanical polishing and coating a thin film of silver at one end of the PMMA rod, an analogous Fabry-Perot resonator was structured within the rod. Decent laser emission was obtained from the resulted SSDL without complex external cavities.

Liquid-state optical gain media are desired for high-power lasing applications due to their easier heat management than solid-state media, as well as for the emerging field of optofluidics. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are solution-processed materials that carry many attractive properties suitable for liquid lasing. To date, however, their lasing action is often achieved in close-packed films, as a high volume fraction of QDs is required for stimulated emission to outpace the ultrafast Auger decay of gain-active multiexciton states. Here we report liquid lasing from color-tunable (red, orange, and green) alloyed core/shell QDs with impeded Auger recombination. Lasing action is achieved by loading the QD-solutions into cavities under quasi-continuous-wave excitation. The light amplification behaviors of QD-solutions under ambient conditions are much more stable compared to those of both solid-state QD-films and dye solutions. Compatibility with aqueous solvents and ease of scalability are also demonstrated. An optimized optical power efficiency of 17.2% has been achieved. These results indicate that liquid lasing from colloidal QDs holds strong promise for real-world implementation.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising gain materials for realizing solution-processable, wavelength-tunable and low-cost laser diodes. However, achieving electrically pumped amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in QDs, a prerequisite for lasing, is hampered by the low net optical gain and low current injection of the diodes. Here we demonstrate electrically pumped and surface-emitting ASE from QDs by electro-thermal-optically co-designing a quantum-dot light-emitting diode (QLED) with high net optical gain and high current injection. By developing a top-emitting cavity featuring a Ag/indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) bottom reflective electrode and a IZO/Ag top semi-transparent electrode, the QD emission is effectively resonated; moreover, not only are the surface plasmon polariton losses induced by the metallic electrodes completely eliminated, but also the optical field can be confined primarily within the QDs, resulting in a reduction in loss and a 2-fold enhancement in gain. As a result, the QLED exhibits surface-emitting ASE with a threshold of 10 μJ cm −2 when pumped by a 100 fs laser at 77 K. By building the QLED directly on a Si heat sink and driving the QLED with an ns-pulsed current source, the Joule heat is effectively dissipated, allowing the QLED to operate stably even at a high current of 2000 A cm −2 . At 153 K and an injection current of 94 A cm −2 , the QLED demonstrates surface-emitting ASE with strong directionality, high intensity and narrow bandwidth. The developed QLED, capable of generating surface-emitting ASE, paves the way for the development of QD based vertical cavity surface-emitting laser diodes.

I–III–VI ternary quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as favorable alternatives to the toxic II–VI QDs for optoelectronic and biological applications. However, their use as optical gain media for microlasers is still limited by a low fluorescence efficiency. Here, we demonstrate amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and lasing from colloidal QDs of Zn-processed AgIn5S8 (AIS) for the first time. The passivation treatment on the AIS QDs yields a 3.4-fold enhancement of fluorescence quantum efficiency and a 30% increase in the two-photon absorption cross section. ASE is achieved from the AIS/ZnS core/shell QD films under both one- and two-photon pumping with a threshold fluence of ∼84.5 μJ/cm2 and 3.1 mJ/cm2, respectively. These thresholds are comparable to the best optical gain performance of Cd based-QDs reported in the literature. Moreover, we demonstrate a facile whispering-gallery-mode microlaser of the core/shell QDs with a lasing threshold of ∼233 μJ/cm2. The passivated AIS QDs can be promising optical gain media for photonic applications.
