Currently, developing advanced optoelectronic materials is of great importance to solving serious problem of fake and shoddy products. Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials are particularly suitable for addressing this issue, but limited by the realization of multiple upconverison (UC) emissions upon a single-wavelength laser excitation. Herein, it is proven that the co-dopant of blue/near-infrared (NIR)-emitting activators (Tm 3+ ) and green/red-emitting centers (Er 3+ ) in a particular designed core–shell nanoarchitecture allows the achievement of multiple luminescence over wide spectral region for optical security. In our study, cubic-phased NaYbF 4 :Tm/Er@CaF 2 nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized through a layer-by-layer coprecipitation strategy, which presents visible multicolor UC luminescence and invisible NIR UC emission upon 980 nm laser excitation by just regulating the laser power and temperature. Significantly, the unique luminescent characteristics enables the designed UC nanoparticles a promising candidate for advanced anti-counterfeiting. This works offers a reference to develop advanced optoelectronic materials for practical application in optical security.

Silane- or siloxane-functionalized carbon dots (SiCDs), a unique subclass of carbon nanomaterials modified with silane or siloxane groups, offer solid-state luminescence, solution processability, and chemical reactivity, making them promising candidates for optical coatings, displays, and security technologies. However, the precise patterning of carbon dot materials remains underdeveloped, limiting their integration into advanced photonic and anticounterfeiting systems. In this work, we present a scalable thermal nanoimprinting strategy to fabricate high-resolution, luminescent micro- and nanostructures using SiCDs as both emissive materials and imprintable resists. The SiCDs are synthesized via a solvothermal method using citric acid and urea as carbon sources and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as a siloxane-functionalizing agent. By varying the feed ratio of citric acid to GPTMS, the carbon core and surface fluorophore of SiCDs can be effectively tailored, enabling enhancement of their solid-state photoluminescence quantum yield, optical transmittance, and gelation temperature. Using SiCDs as the imprint resist, microstructures, including micropillars and gratings with feature sizes ranging from 2 to 50 μm, are fabricated by thermal nanoimprinting. The resulting patterns exhibited excellent fidelity, surface properties, and thermal stability. Furthermore, a dual-mode anticounterfeiting surface is constructed by combining nanoimprinting with screen printing, enabling dynamic angle-dependent holography and UV-excited fluorescence within a single patterned film. This study highlights the potential of SiCDs as a multifunctional material platform for solid-state luminescent patterning and positions carbon dot patterning as a rising frontier in nanophotonics and optical security.

Visual optical information encryption–decryption and anti-counterfeiting (IEDAC) technology play a vital role in the field of information security. Recent luminescent information encryption technologies face the disadvantages of depending on external large-scale stimulus decryption equipment, inability to read out repeatedly, and information leakage, impeding the practical applications of luminescence encryption. Here, an integrated luminescent IEDAC chip is proposed, which provides a convenient approach to store and decipher pre-patterned luminescence information based on laser engraved template and film heater. The luminescent encryption chip contains a double-layer structure made up of long persistent phosphors based on SrCaGa 4 O 8 host and a laser induced graphene heater, which makes it possible to decrypt information on a single chip. This design enables dual-mode (photoluminescence/long persistent luminescence), dual-color (blue/yellow-green), and multi-level IEDAC function, providing a novel insight and integrated strategy for implementing advanced IEDAC technologies.

Most zirconium-based hybrids face limitations in indirect bandgap emissions due to low quantum efficiency and poor exciton utilization. Here, we demonstrate that trivalent antimony (Sb3+) serves as an effective dopant to induce broadband orange-red emission in the perovskite derivative C8H24N2ZrCl6 (CZC). Under 275 nm excitation, undoped CZC exhibits cyan photoluminescence at 480 nm, originating from self-trapped excitons (STEs). With the introduction of Sb3+, an additional wide emission band emerged at 650 nm, corresponding to the 3P1 → 1S0 transition of Sb3+. The dual-band intensity ratio is tunable by the Sb3+ doping concentration with the maximum orange emission achieved at X = 25% within the investigated range (0 to 30%) (X, defined as the molar ratio of Sb3+/(Zr4+ + Sb3+)), achieving record-high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 87.8%. A white-light-emitting diode (LED) prototype fabricated with CZC:25% Sb3+ demonstrates stable electroluminescence spectra across 10–110 mA currents, with patterned films showing dual-mode anticounterfeiting labels under 275 and 365 nm UV lights. This work offers a dopant-mediated STE sensitization strategy for efficient, thermally stable, and spectrally tunable hybrid halide phosphors suitable for solid-state lighting and optical security applications.

Herein this study, plasmonic-patterned nanostructures are applied to fabricate unclonable anti-counterfeiting labels. Patterned Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) are constructed by the skillful combination of diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PS- b -P4VP) self-assembly with shadow mask lithography to provide a simple and universal approach for large-area fabrication of patterned nanostructures. The AuNP pattern can be made visible by increasing the nanoparticle size. A surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) - based physical unclonable function (PUF) security label with a large encoding capacity is fabricated by depositing malachite green (MG) on the surface. The broadening of the size distribution of the AuNPs after their growth and the increased disorder in their arrangement confer the security label with unique and unclonable characteristics. The as-prepared optical PUF security label is read out by a confocal Raman spectrometer to extract binary codes, which are then authenticated through comparison. These SERS-based PUF security labels, which combine patterning with stochastic spectral encoding, not only provide rich and diverse patterns but are also promising for anti-counterfeiting applications in areas such as rigid silicon-based optoelectronic materials and devices.

Conventional multimode anticounterfeiting systems usually suffer high cost, complicated structures, and different optical channel interferences. In this study, we demonstrate a simple strategy named “all-in-one functionalization and synergic ordering” to prepare quadruple mode patterns on a photoresponsive alternating copolymer P(DPA-alt-BP) film. Herein, a 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) nonanoate unit serves as the multipurpose moiety with photoresponse and fluorescence, performing photodimerization upon 365 nm UV irradiation. The liquid crystal mesogen biphenyl (BP) caproate units can orderly align along strain for polarized sight and improve the microphase separation. Upon UV irradiation through a photomask followed by solvent annealing, the P(DPA-alt-BP) film is first gradient-cross-linked and then undergoes stress relief and microphase separation, giving rise to a synergic ordering effect that enables fabrication of an anticounterfeiting pattern with quadruple modes, i.e., wrinkled pattern, substructure on a wrinkled surface, distinguishable fluorescent emission, and polarized sight on the film. This strategy is promising for high-level anticounterfeiting applications and provides helpful inspiration to the development of innovative photoresponsive materials.

Holographic images based on surface relief gratings are widely used in anti-counterfeiting labels for their high image resolution, full-color display and durability. However, traditional polymer-based holographic anti-counterfeiting labels are faced with the risk of being counterfeited due to the simple grating structures, and cannot provide further verification information except for dynamic optical effects. Moreover, in extreme environments, such as high / low temperatures, polymer-based holographic anti-counterfeiting labels may lose their encrypted information due to thermal / cold deformation. Therefore, developing one smart holographic label that is easy to read, difficult to replicate, and durable is a challenge. Herein, we propose a strategy of reconstructing quick response (QR) code on polyimide films through holographic relief gratings. And by utilizing the structural characteristics of QR code and multiplexing technology, we have achieved the integration of multiple authentication information access entrances without crosstalk at the same location. The applicability and superiority of switchable holographic QR codes that combine anti-counterfeiting and information traceability in encryption applications are discussed. This strategy for integrating encryption information based on surface relief grating provides an effective alternative for the manufacture of temperature-tolerant polymer-based smart holographic anti-counterfeiting labels.

Smart luminescent materials capable of time-resolved dynamic fluorescence color transitions hold immense potential for advanced information encryption and anti-counterfeiting technologies in the emerging digital era. However, achieving precise control over wide-range fluorescence color modulation remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel reverse sustained-release strategy is presented to fabricate CsPbBr 3 @PAA perovskite quantum dots (QDs), where ultra-small CsPbBr 3 QDs within quantum confinement size (QCS) are confined within a polyacrylic acid (PAA) matrix. Initially, the CsPbBr 3 @PAA QDs exhibit blue-violet fluorescence in toluene due to the quantum confinement effect. Upon exposure to hydrous alcohol, the PAA matrix enables a controlled, reverse release of CsPbBr 3 QDs into the solvent, triggering a morphological transition from sub-nanometer QDs to nanoblocks exceeding the QCS. This structural evolution induces a dynamic time-dependent fluorescence shift from blue-violet to green, spanning five visually distinct colors (blue-violet, blue, cyan, turquoise, and fluorescent green) across the CIE chromaticity diagram. By leveraging this unique time-resolved color transition mechanism, programmable information encryption and dynamic fluorescent patterning with temporal precision are demonstrated. This work not only advances the design of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials but also provides a versatile platform for next-generation optical security systems

Electrospun nanofiber-based physical unclonable functions (PUFs) offer ideal security features, positioning them as highly promising for document and packaging authentication as well as data encryption. Additionally, electrospun nanofiber membranes serve as versatile substrates for integrating functional components and nanoparticles, offering significant potential for photonic integration and enhanced optical security. In this study, we integrate plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence with hierarchical diffraction gratings on electrospun nanofiber membranes to create a multi-level, high-security PUF system. A novel approach is used to co-assemble silver nanocubes and upconverting nanoparticles at the oil–water interface, followed by microcontact printing to efficiently transfer the Ag/UCNP gratings onto electrospun nanofiber membranes. This hybrid structure exhibits a disorder–order–disorder pattern across multiple length scales: disordered Ag/UCNPs at the nanoscale, short-range ordered grating units at the microscale, and long-range randomness introduced by the electrospun nanofiber network at the macroscale. These structural features contribute to three distinct optical anti-counterfeiting mechanisms: plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence emission, achieving a fivefold increase in green luminescence intensity under 980 nm laser excitation; angle-dependent rainbow holography, generated by the ordered grating units; and physically unclonable patterns, which enable cryptographic key generation with a vast key space of 1063. The integration of multi-responsive nanoparticles with electrospun nanofiber membranes opens new possibilities for lightweight, compact, and secure optical devices, providing a robust platform for next-generation authentication and encryption technologies.

In this paper, a series of Sm 3+ single-doped and Sm 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped lead-free double perovskite cesium sodium bismuthate hexachloride(Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 ) fluorescent materials are successfully synthesized by solvothermal method, and their multimode luminescence properties and temperature sensing properties are systematically studied. The yellow, orange and green tunable luminescence of Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :Sm 3+ /Er 3+ phosphor are achieved by adjusting the excitation wavelength(380, 410, 980 nm). The material exhibits multi-color luminescence characteristics under different excitation. Moreover, the anti-counterfeit design exhibits robust security and resistance to duplication. Based on the luminescence intensity ratio(LIR) technology, the relative sensitivity(S R ) of Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 :15 %Sm 3+ /20 %Er 3+ reaches 3.06 %K −1 (313 K) under 410 nm excitation. The study provides a new idea for the development of multi-functional lead-free perovskite materials in the field of optical anti-counterfeiting and precision temperature measurement.

Persistent luminescence has emerged as a robust platform for anti-counterfeiting applications due to its exceptional spatial-temporal decoding capability. Yet, conventional strategies often suffer from uniform emission patterns and predictable replication, compromising their security. Herein, we present “Snap-PLNPs”—near-infrared emitting CaS:Tm persistent luminescent nanoparticles engineered to undergo aqueous-triggered self-destruction via a hydrolysis mechanism. In contrast to traditional photophysical approaches, this chemically initiated degradation irreversibly terminates the luminescence, ensuring that security information can be decoded only once. Moreover, by incorporating an additional SiO2 shell, we introduce a programmable delay in the hydrolysis process, thereby modulating the duration of the emission and adding a temporal regulation layer. This dual control—combining instantaneous chemical deactivation with time-resolved modulation—establishes a dynamic hierarchical security encoding framework. When embedded into laser-engraved logos, these CaS:Tm@SiO2 hybrids enable a novel triple-layer anti-counterfeiting strategy that integrates spatial, temporal, and chemical dimensions. Our results underscore the potential of Snap-PLNPs as a next-generation platform for robust and adaptive security technologies.
