Ultraviolet-C persistent luminescence from the Lu2SiO5:Pr3+ persistent phosphor for solar-blind optical tagging

Shao Yan,Yanjie Liang,Yafei Chen,Jingwei Liu,Dongxun Chen,Zhengwei Pan

Visible and infrared persistent phosphors have gained considerable attention in recent years and are being widely used as glow-in-the-dark materials in dark environments. In contrast, the progress in persistent phosphors emitting at the other end of the spectrum, i.e., the shorter-wavelength ultraviolet-C (UVC; 200–280 nm), is rather slow. Here we report the design and synthesis of a well-performing Pr3+-doped UVC emissive persistent phosphor, Lu2SiO5:Pr3+, which exhibits intense UVC persistent luminescence peaking at 270 nm and a long persistence time of more than 12 h after excitation with a 254 nm UV lamp. Besides, the UVC persistent luminescence of a UV pre-irradiated sample can be repeatedly revived after repeated short-illumination with low-energy white light via a process called photostimulated persistent luminescence. Owing to the distinct spectral features of UVC light and the self-sustained luminescence properties, the UVC persistent luminescence of the Lu2SiO5:Pr3+ persistent phosphor can be clearly monitored and imaged using a corona camera in bright environments including direct sunlight and indoor light. The Lu2SiO5:Pr3+ persistent phosphor is expected to find promising applications in the covert optical tagging field.

A considerable improvement of long-persistent luminescence in LiLuSiO4:Pr3+ phosphors by Sm3+ co-doping for optical tagging applications

Shao Yan,Yanjie Liang,Yi Zhang,Bibo Lou,Jingwei Liu,Dongxun Chen,Shihai Miao,Chonggeng Ma

Solar-blind ultraviolet-C (UVC; 200–280 nm) luminescent materials have exhibited great potential for wide applications in photomedicine and photochemistry due to the unique spectral features of UVC light. However, it is still a challenging work to develop persistent phosphors emitting in the UVC spectral region owing to the lack of suitable host materials and emitting centers. Herein, we report a series of LiLuSiO4:Pr3+,Sm3+ UVC persistent phosphors that can be charged by a 254 nm UV lamp or a high-energy X-ray beam giving rise to long-lasting UVC light emission peaking at 280 nm. More importantly, a considerable enhancement of UVC afterglow intensity and decay time has been achieved by Sm3+ co-doping because the Sm3+ ions can act as effective electron traps, which has been verified by the spectroscopic investigations and first-principles calculations. On top of this, narrowband ultraviolet-B (NB-UVB) persistent luminescence with a line emission at 313 nm has also been realized by introducing Gd3+ into LiLuSiO4:Pr3+,Sm3+ persistent phosphors based on persistent energy transfer from Pr3+ to Gd3+. Considering that the UVC and NB-UVB persistent luminescence can fully avoid severe interference from ambient light, the as-prepared LiLuSiO4:Pr3+,Sm3+ and Li(Lu,Gd)SiO4:Pr3+,Sm3+ persistent phosphors can find promising applications as invisible identification taggants in a bright environment.

Long-lasting far-UVC persistent luminescence for solar-blind optical tagging

Xihui Shan,Yi Zhang,Xulong Lv,Yanjie Liang

Far ultraviolet-C (far-UVC; 200–230 nm) luminescent materials have garnered significant interest in recent years, driven by the growing demands for applications such as disinfection and solar-blind imaging due to their distinct wavelength features. However, the research and development of far-UVC persistent phosphors are lacking. Here, we report the realization of far-UVC persistent luminescence in CaSO4:Pr3+ and CaSO4:Pb2+ phosphors, which show emissions peaking at 220 nm and 230 nm with a long persistence time of >24 h after ceasing X-ray excitation. This is by far the shortest UVC afterglow emission to the best of our knowledge. The far-UVC afterglow from the charged phosphors can be readily detected by a solar-blind UV camera in both indoor-lighting and outdoor environments owing to the absence of background noise from ambient light. The continuous photostimulation of indoor white LED light and outdoor sunlight has different impact on the far-UVC afterglow performance of CaSO4:Pr3+ and CaSO4:Pb2+ phosphors, which is elucidated by the decay time-dependent thermoluminescence (TL) curves in different light conditions. This study expands the field of persistent luminescence to the far-UVC spectral region and will inspire the discovery of more excellent far-UVC persistent phosphors.

Photonic Bandgap Fiber Microlaser with Dual-Band Emission for Integrated Optical Tagging and Sensing

Yanqiong Wang,Chaoyang Gong,Xi Yang,Tao Zhu,Ke Zhang,Yun-Jiang Rao,Lei Wei,Yuan Gong

Lasers are emerging as novel photonic tags for single-cell labeling, anticounterfeiting, and encryption technology due to their narrow linewidth, high spectral multiplexing capacity, and superior stimuli-responsiveness. These laser-encoded photonic tags mostly distinguish the heterogeneity but do not yet provide both tagging and sensing of biosamples, which is highly desirable for disease screening. Here, a photonic bandgap (PBG) fiber microlaser that works as a 2D tag and an immunosensor is developed. The tubular PBG structure allows strong light–matter interaction and supports dual-band lasing in the same optical fiber, enabling massive biosample tagging and sensitive biodetection. By encoding the random resonant peaks in the short-wave band and multiplexing in the spatial domain, a 2D laser tag is generated with a large encoding capacity (>2 8500 ). Immunosensing of microalbumin is realized by using the periodic resonant peaks in the long-wave band, and a limit of detection of 0.06 ng µL −1 is achieved. This work is inspiring for the development of high-performance, multifunctional integrated devices for disease screening.

Narrowband ultraviolet-B persistent luminescence from (Y,Gd)3Ga5O12:Bi3+ phosphors for optical tagging application

Jingwei Liu,Yanjie Liang,Shao Yan,Dongxun Chen,Shihai Miao,Weili Wang

Luminescent materials that emit in the narrowband ultraviolet-B (NB-UVB; 310–313 nm) spectral region have attracted considerable attention due to their unique spectral features, which endow them with great potential applications in the fields of photochemistry and photomedicine. However, NB-UVB persistent luminescent materials are relatively lacking, especially materials that are excitable by natural sunlight. Here we report the NB-UVB persistent luminescence of Gd3+ in (Y,Gd)3Ga5O12:Bi3+ garnets by making use of the persistent energy transfer from Bi3+ to Gd3+. The optimal Bi3+ and Gd3+ concentrations for the maximum energy transfer efficiency are determined and persistent NB-UVB light emission with a peak wavelength at 313 nm and an afterglow time of more than 24 h is successfully achieved in the (Y,Gd)3Ga5O12:Bi3+ phosphor. More importantly, the as-synthesized NB-UVB persistent phosphors are also excitable by the widely available natural sunlight and exhibit exceptional NB-UVB persistent luminescence performance. Benefitting from the visible-blind emission feature, interference-free capability from indoor ambient light and self-sustained optical characteristic, the developed sunlight-excitable NB-UVB persistent phosphors here not only hold great promise for covert optical tagging applications, but also open new opportunities for optical data storage in a bright indoor environment.
