Recently, the organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells exhibit rapidly rising efficiencies, while anomalous hysteresis in perovskite solar cells remains unsolvable. Herein, a high-quality perovskite thin film is prepared by a modified vapor-assisted solution process, which is a simple but well-controllable method proven to be capable of producing a thin film with full surface coverage and grain size up to micrometers. The as-fabricated perovskite solar cell has efficiency as high as 10.2%. The hysteresis effects of both planar and mesoscopic TiO2-based perovskite solar cells have been comprehensively studied upon illumination. The results demonstrate that mesoporous-based perovskite cells combined with remarkable grain size are subject to alleviating the hysteresis effects in comparison to the planar cells. Likewise, mesoscopic TiO2-based perovskite cells perform independently of illumination and bias conditions prior to the measurements, whereas the planar cells display a reversible behavior of illumination and applied bias-dependent I–V curves. The present study would refer strip road for the stability study of the perovskite solar cells.

CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (MAPbI₃) perovskites have demonstrated significant potential in optoelectronic devices. However, the stability and performance of these applications are critically influenced by electric fields and light soaking effect (LSE). The mechanisms by which these factors affect the photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) characteristics of MAPbI₃ thin films are not yet fully understood. In this study, we constructed a symmetric lateral electrode structure (ITO/MAPbI₃/ITO) to systematically analyze the impact of varying electric field strengths and LSE wavelengths on the PL and TRPL characteristics of MAPbI₃ thin films. Our experimental results reveal that bias voltage significantly influences carrier recombination processes and transfer rates. Both forward and reverse bias voltages exhibit similar effects on the symmetric lateral electrode ITO/MAPbI 3 /ITO structure. As the bias voltage increases, the steady-state PL intensity of MAPbI 3 films decreases, and the TRPL decay time shortens. Additionally, our studies on different LSE indicate that higher photon energy has a more pronounced impact on the TRPL lifetime of MAPbI 3 films. This research elucidates the mechanisms by which electric fields and LSE affect the photophysical properties of MAPbI 3 perovskite films, providing new insights for optimizing the performance of these materials in optoelectronic devices.

The light-soaking (LS) effect has been reported to limit the accuracy and stability of device power output of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and it is significant to develop effective approaches and strategies to eliminate the LS effect in PSCs. There are very few reports on suppressing the LS effect in CsPbI 2 Br-based all-inorganic PSCs. Herein, a method to eliminate the LS effect by synchronous passivation of anionic and cationic defects in CsPbI 2 Br perovskite film is demonstrated. The 4-(chlorosulfonyl)benzoic acid (CSBA) is added into perovskite precursor and the in situ generation of I 3 − effectively passivates the anionic halogen vacancy defects in CsPbI 2 Br. In the meantime, the Lewis base groups on CSBA coordinate with Cs + and Pb 2+ to passivate the cationic defects. This zwitterionic passivation effect of CSBA remarkably cuts off the path of defect-induced charge recombination and thus eliminates the LS effect. This work offers a deep opinion for future researchers to modulate the LS effect of all-inorganic PSCs.

Stability remains as a challenge of perovskite solar cells although encouraging progress has been made toward their maximum achievable power conversion efficiency in recent years. Light-soaking issue, where the device performance improves upon continuous light illumination and reduces upon storage in dark, is widely observed and marked as the early-stage instability during device operation. In this work, we have employed conjugated polymer PCDTBT as the dopant-free hole-transport layer to fabricate devices without hysteresis but with reversible light-soaking instability. The introduction of n-type molecules, either organic molecule PDI2 or fullerene derivative PC61BM, as the interfacial layer between TiO2 and perovskite layers can effectively reduce or eliminate this instability owing to the efficient charge transport and defect passivation at the electron-transport layer interface, accompanied with an efficiency of 15.7 and 17.7%, respectively. We conclude that the light-soaking instability of these perovskite solar cells is mainly originated from the charge accumulation at the TiO2/perovskite interface and can be eliminated once the interfacial charge can be suppressed by interfacial modifications to improve charge transport at the interface.

The dynamic defect tolerance under light soaking is a crucial aspect of halide perovskites. However, the underlying physics of light soaking remains elusive and is subject to debate, exhibiting both positive and negative effects. In this investigation, we demonstrated that surface defects in perovskite films significantly impact the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells, closely correlated with light soaking behaviors. Removing the top surface layer through adhesive tape, the surface defect density noticeably decreases, leading to enhanced photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, prolonged carrier lifetime, and higher conductivity. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells improves from 17.70% to 20.5%. Furthermore, we confirmed a positive correlation between surface defects and the light soaking effect. Perovskite films with low surface defects surprisingly exhibit a 3-fold increase in PL intensity and an 85% increase in carrier lifetime under 500 s of continuous illumination at an intensity of 100 mW/cm2. Beyond the conventional strategy of suppressing defect trapping, we propose increasing the capability of dynamic defect tolerance as an effective strategy to enhance the optoelectronic properties and performance of perovskite solar cells.

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have been demonstrated to exhibit mixed ionic and electron conductive properties, characterized by their remarkable soft lattice features. However, a full understanding of the complicated interplay between ion, lattice, and carrier recombination and the influence on the optoelectronic properties and performance of perovskite solar cells remains elusive. To this end, the present study utilized time-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to investigate the light-soaking effect of organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells doped with alkali metal ions (K+/Rb+) and undoped perovskite films under continuous illumination. Dynamic monitoring of the PL intensity and carrier lifetimes within 1–500 s of continuous illumination revealed significant influences of the alkali metal ions and light intensity on the performance, including the stability of the perovskite solar devices. The results reveal that K+/Rb+ doping in perovskite films induces more positive light-soaking effects. These effects include enhanced PL intensity, inhibited phase separation, and prolonged carrier lifetime. The synergistic combination of these effects leads to the improved photoelectric conversion efficiency and device stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). These findings offer novel insights into the roles of ions in MHPs and are pivotal for comprehending the mechanisms underlying MHP devices, particularly concerning the ionic properties of MHPs.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most extensively used electron-transporting layers (ETLs) in organic solar cells. However, owing to numerous surface defects and mismatched energy bands with the photoactive layer, light-soaking process is usually required to achieve a high device performance for the ZnO-based cells. Herein, we reported the synthesis of N,S-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) by a simple hydrothermal treatment using ascorbic acid and ammonium persulfate as reagents. As characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the synthesized CQDs were found to be 2–7 nm in dimensions, having a graphite-structured core and amorphous carbon on the shell. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed that these CQDs are highly nitrogen- and sulfur-doped, which leads to efficient (with a quantum yield of 33%) downconversion and excitation-dependent photoluminescence character. Application of these N,S-CQDs as surface modifier for ZnO layer in inverted organic solar cells was investigated. Results indicate that the cells with N,S-CQDs-decorated ZnO ETL showed higher power conversion efficiency without S-shaped kink in the current density–voltage curves. The performance improvement and the elimination of light-soaking effect for ZnO:N,S-CQDs cells are attributed to the ZnO surface defect passivation by N,S-CQDs, as confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. The cells with N,S-CQDs-modified ZnO ETL showed a high power conversion efficiency of 9.31%, which is higher than the reference ZnO cells. The current work provides a feasible way to achieve shell element-doped CQDs for specific application in organic electronic devices.

It's still a scientific issue to synthesize exotic amines-free and pure-phase FAPbI 3 film because most FAPbI 3 films are synthesized by adding MACl-like exotic amines salts in their precursor solution to reduce the phase transition barrier. In this work, high-quality and additive-free phase-pure α-FAPbI 3 films are successfully fabricated via the sustainable Alkane/Nanocrystals method. FAPbI 3 nanocrystals (NCs) are performed as the heterogeneous nuclei to promote the nucleation and crystallization of FAPbI 3 films. Cryogenic-TEM and in situ GIWAXS evidence the seed function and interesting phase evolution of FAPbI 3 NCs. The whole phase transition course of pure FAPbI 3 film is systematically studied. IR-AFM and ToF-SIMS reveal ligands capped on NCs are extruded to the film surface. PbAc-IPA solution treating the film surface can effectively wash off the surplus ligands at the surface and modulate the surface chemistry and energy levels. As a result, an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.45% is achieved for MA-free pure α-FAPbI 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs), as well as the best light-soaking stability record of retaining 95% of the initial PCE after 800 h. This work paves a new way to fabricate MA-free pure α-FAPbI 3 PSCs.
