A solar-driven self-repairing sponge for efficient recovery of crude oil

Changyuan Song,Yin Jin,Xiangyi Gu,Jianwei Shi

Solar-heated absorption has become an effective technique to handle the crisis of crude oil spill. Although photothermal absorbents could efficiently clean up crude oil in situ, oil recovery methods such as squeezing absorbents have a negative impact on structural integrity and performance of absorbents, shortening the service life of the device. Herein, a solar-driven carbon-doped self-repairing polyurethane sponge (CSPU) is fabricated for absorption and recovery of crude oil. Chitosan-derived N-doped porous carbon (NPC) as photothermal filler and 2-hydroxyethyl disulfide (HDES) as chain extender are introduced into sponge in situ through free foaming. The firm load of NPC endows CSPU with good light absorption of 97.1% and a stable photothermal conversion performance. Additionally, the solar-driven self-repairing property promotes CSPU to timely repair the structural damage caused in oil recovery process. Consequently, CSPU exhibits a high crude oil absorption of 23.5 g/g, and it still maintains a good oil absorption and recovery efficiency after friction, ultrasonic treatment or multiple absorption-recovery cycles. This strategy combining photothermal oil absorption and solar-driven self-repairing provides a sustainable and durable solution for addressing crude oil spills.

Universal Strategy to Prepare a Flexible Photothermal Absorber Based on Hierarchical Fe-MOF-74 toward Highly Efficient Solar Interfacial Seawater Desalination

Jiulong Wang,Weike Wang,Jianguo Li,Xueyang Mu,Xinyue Yan,Zerui Wang,Jinbu Su,Tao Lei,Chengbing Wang

Solar-driven interfacial steam generation (SDISG), as an emerging green and renewable approach to overcome water shortage, is very suitable for remote locations, developing countries, and disaster zones because it does not require an additional energy supply. However, the traditional metal-based and carbon-based absorbers always suffered from fragility (or rigidity) and the complex preparation process, which dramatically inhibited their transportation and installation in areas with poor infrastructure. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a universal method to fabricate flexible solar evaporators. Herein, a novel solar evaporator that integrates a flexible matrix (Cu mesh or textile) and a hierarchical Fe-MOF-74 photothermal absorber component is perfectly prepared for the rapid and efficient SDISG. Notably, the results show that Fe-MOF-74-based flexible textile matrix composites exhibit outstanding light absorption (83.81%), low thermal conductivity (0.1730 W/m K), super hydrophilic properties (within 50 ms, the contact angle is close to 0°), excellent salt resistance, high evaporation rate (1.35 kg/m2 h), and photothermal conversion efficiency (η is 81.5% under one sun, stable for 30 days). Owing to the flexibility, recyclability, and above-mentioned excellent performance, the prepared hierarchical Fe-MOF-74-based flexible composite systems are more practical for transportation, large-scale production, and stable and efficient applications. As a result, this work offers new insight into the future development of the combination of a MOF-based photothermal absorber and flexible substrates, as well as for the application of interfacial solar seawater desalination, and provides a new reference for other applications.

Bio-inspired Janus composite with dual-phase change ranges for all-season thermal comfort

Chen Xudong,Ou Yuxiang,Zhang Zhiyuan,Su Zihang,Sun Xiaowei,Dong Yan,Wang Fuqiang

Passive thermal regulation materials are gaining increasing attention for their sustainability; however, conventional ones are usually limited to a single temperature condition, failing to meet the varying temperature demands across different seasons. To address this challenge, inspired by penguins’ thermoregulatory strategies, this study develops a composite phase change material that enables distinct regulation mechanisms under varying conditions. This material features a Janus surface that can switch between photothermal absorption and radiative cooling to cope with cold daytimes and hot environments; two distinct phase change ranges can maintain temperature balance on comfortable nights and achieve long-term thermal compensation on cold nights. Outdoor tests demonstrated that the material achieves 9.0℃ daytime cooling and extends nighttime comfort duration by 27.3% in hot weather, while in cold weather it averages 11℃ daytime warming and keeps nighttime temperature 0.5℃ above ambient; simulation results further showed that roof application of this material can effectively improve thermal comfort in diverse regions throughout the year. This work integrates photothermal absorption, radiative cooling, and dual-phase change processes, providing a feasible strategy for enhancing all-season thermal comfort in building energy conservation.

Enhancing the light-thermal absorption and conversion capacity of diatom-based biomass/polyethylene glycol composites phase change material by introducing MXene

Weihao Xu,Jingtao Su,Jiahui Lin,Jintao Huang,Mengman Weng,Yonggang Min

The first case of utilizing MXene as an “enhancer” for light-thermal absorption and conversion of biomass diatom-based phase change materials (PCMs) to prepare novel shape-stabilized phase change materials (SSPCMs) is introduced. The SSPCMs composed of MXene-containing diatomite as a supporting material, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as phase change material could be fabricated by a simple melt impregnation method. The chemical properties and thermal performance of all SSPCMs are characterized and analyzed. No chemical reactions were involved between PEG and the supporting material. Prepared by the theoretical mass ratio, the SSPCM-2 shows a good phase change performance and thermal stability with a relative enthalpy efficiency of 99.2 %. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of SSPCM-2 rose by 111.8 % over PEG and by 11 % over SSPCM-1. More importantly, the light-thermal absorption and conversion efficiency of SSPCMs were effectively facilitated by the introduction of the MXene “enhancer”. This study provides a novel strategy for preparing high-performance of light-response biomass SSPCMs, which can be harnessed for solar thermal energy storage .

Design of high-performance and durable macrocapsules with ceramic-encapsulated aluminum for efficient solar energy absorption and storage

Lili Yang,Shuxian Duan,Chong Li,Gang Wang,Jinrui Zhang,Chenchen Qin,Yihan Shao

Phase change materials (PCMs), particularly metals, are widely employed for storing and releasing solar energy, aiming to address the fluctuations and intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. However, their implementation faces challenges such as limited spectral absorption, poor thermal storage capacity, and low wear resistance, which hinder broader application. This research introduces Al@SSBC microcapsule as a novel solution that combines photothermal absorption and energy storage functionalities. The design incorporates metallic aluminum encapsulated in a ceramic shell with superior spectral absorption. The ceramic layer captures solar energy, converting and storing it directly in the aluminum core, thus improving energy storage by eliminating extra heat transfer steps. Experimental evaluations reveal that the disk-shaped Al@SSBC-Wafer macrocapsule achieves an average absorption efficiency of 89.5 %, surpassing the traditional Al 2 O 3 shell by 63.9 times (absorbance 1.4 %). Notably, the macrocapsules exhibit excellent thermal stability, showing no leakage after 2000 operational cycles, a result of the self-sealing behavior of the aluminum core. At high temperatures, the aluminum forms a compact oxide layer, effectively shielding it from air exposure. Variants with higher aluminum content demonstrate enhanced thermal storage capacities, with the Al@SSBC-Sphere macrocapsule achieving a storage density of 797.0 J/g within a temperature range of 300–750 °C. Durability tests verify the Al@SSBC-Wafer macrocapsule's robustness, withstanding over 2000 cycles and crushing pressures above 99.4N. Furthermore, it experiences only a 0.07 % mass loss after a 60-h ball milling test. This study integrates photothermal absorption and storage in metal-based PCM macrocapsules, providing an innovative strategy for efficient high-temperature solar energy use.

Scale-up of solar interfacial evaporation devices: advanced optical, thermal, and water management for efficient seawater desalination

Shang Liu,Shiteng Li,Qijun Yang,Meng Lin

Significant progress has been made in enhancing solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) performance at the laboratory scale, however, translating these improvements to meter-scale systems suitable for practical deployment remains limited by challenges, including material scalability, thermal losses, and non-uniform water distribution. Addressing these issues is essential for the development of modular, meter-scale evaporators as baseline units for industrial-scale desalination systems. This study presents a solar multi-stage interfacial evaporation (SMIE) device with a 1 m² active area designed to address the key limitations associated with large-scale operation systematically. The device integrates: (i) a scalable photothermal absorber layer based on Cu-CAT-1 metal-organic framework or carbon black, (ii) an inverted multi-stage configuration with optimized thermal insulation to reduce energy loss and enable latent heat recovery, and (iii) structured wicking channels engineered to maintain spatially uniform water transport. Under 1-sun illumination in a controlled laboratory setting, a 100 cm² prototype achieved freshwater production rates of 5.45 kg m-2 h-1 with deionized water and 3.9 kg m-2 h-1 with 3.5 wt% saline water. Outdoor testing of the full-scale 1 m² device yielded an average water production rate of 3.5 L m-2 h-1 (32 L m-2 day-1) and an evaporation efficiency of 345%. These results confirm that the proposed SMIE design maintains high performance at increased scales and under realistic environmental conditions. A techno-economic analysis further identifies the critical role of reducing material costs, particularly the photothermal absorber and porous membrane, to enhance economic feasibility. The work provides a scalable approach to solar-driven desalination, relevant for future modular deployment in distributed and off-grid water purification applications.

Salt-resistant agarose-polyvinylpyrrolidone composite hydrogel with pitted-surface towards highly efficient water desalination and purification

Lina Chen,Xuelong Chen,Baozheng Cui,Jingbo Zhu,Ningjing Bai,Wei Wang,Huixin Wang,Zewen Li,Haijun Niu,Zhe Wang

In recent years, solar energy interfacial evaporation technology has been extensively explored for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. However, salt accumulation and complex fabrication of evaporator largely constrains the applications of this technology in practice. Here, one type of interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel composing of agarose (AG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) using polypyrrole (PPy) as the light absorbent was fabricated via “hot-ice” template method, which was featured with pitted-surface and microchannels structure. The evenly arranged pits on the surface of the hydrogel can absorb the sunlight as much as possible and convert it into heat energy, improving the efficiency of photothermal absorption. The water channels generated by the formation of CaCl 2 ·6H 2 O crystals can transport water from the bottom to the evaporation interface elevating the transmission rate and accelerating the exchange of gradient salt concentration. As consequences, excellent salt resistance of the hydrogel can be obtained, achieving seawater evaporation rate as high as 3.2 kg m −2  h −1 . In addition, the outstanding ion rejection performance, strong acid/alkali purification capability, and good treatment capacity for heavy metal ions and dye wastewater were also demonstrated.

Engineering Lateral Heterojunction of Selenium-Coated Tellurium Nanomaterials toward Highly Efficient Solar Desalination

Chenyang Xing,Dazhou Huang,Shiyou Chen,Qichen Huang,Chuanhong Zhou,Zhengchun Peng,Jiagen Li,Xi Zhu,Yizhen Liu,Zhipeng Liu,Houkai Chen,Jinlai Zhao,Jiangqing Li,Liping Liu,Faliang Cheng,Dianyuan Fan,Han Zhang

Herein, a core–shell tellurium–selenium (Te–Se) nanomaterial with polymer-tailed and lateral heterojunction structures is developed as a photothermal absorber in a bionic solar-evaporation system. It is further revealed that the amorphous Se shell surrounds the crystalline Te core, which not only protects the Te phase from oxidation but also serves as a natural barrier to life entities. The core (Te)–shell (Se) configuration thus exhibits robust stability enhanced by 0.05 eV per Se atom and excellent biocompatibility. Furthermore, high energy efficiencies of 90.71 ± 0.37% and 86.14 ± 1.02% and evaporation rates of 12.88 ± 0.052 and 1.323 ± 0.015 kg m −2 h −1 are obtained under 10 and 1 sun for simulated seawater, respectively. Importantly, no salting out is observed in salt solutions, and the collected water under natural light irradiation possesses extremely low ion concentrations of Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ relative to real seawater. Considering the tunable electronic structures, biocompatibilities, and modifiable broadband absorption of the solar spectrum of lateral heterojunction nanomaterials of Te–Se, the way is paved to engineering 2D semiconductor materials with supporting 3D porous hydrophilic materials for application in solar desalination, wastewater treatment, and biomedical ventures.

Unidirectionally Structured Magnetic Phase-Change Composite Based on Carbonized Polyimide/Kevlar Nanofiber Complex Aerogel for Boosting Solar-Thermo-Electric Energy Conversion

Tao Shi,Huan Liu,Xiaodong Wang

To realize highly efficient solar-thermo-electric energy conversion for clean electricity power generation, we have developed a new type of unidirectionally structured magnetic phase-change composite comprising a carbonized polyimide (C–PI)/Kevlar nanofiber (KNF) complex aerogel as a 3D carbon skeleton porous supporting material, CoFe2O4 nanoparticles as a magnetic additive, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a phase-change material, and polypyrrole as a photothermal absorption coating layer. The as-fabricated C–PI/KNF complex aerogel exhibits a unidirectional microstructure, high porosity, robust skeleton frame, ultralight weight, and high thermal conductance. Featured with such unique structure and characteristics, the complex aerogel can offer an effective heat and electron transfer method to ensure highly efficient solar-thermal conversion and photothermal energy storage of the developed composite. The developed composite exhibits a high latent heat capacity of over 150 J g–1, outstanding shape stability along with a low leakage of 0.2 wt %, good thermal cycling stability, and high photothermal conversion efficiency of 84.8%. Based on the Seebeck effect, a solar thermoelectric generation system (STEGS) was constructed with the hot side coupled with the developed composite and the cold side immersed in air and ice water. Under 2.0 kW m–2 solar irradiation, the developed STEGS in ice water obtained maximum output voltage and current of 259.7 mV and 27.1 mA, respectively, which are significantly higher than those in air. The output power of the developed STEGS in an ice water environment is 50.6% higher than that in air under 4.0 kW m–2 solar irradiation. More importantly, the developed STEGS in ice water continuously generated output voltage and current for about 810 s without solar irradiation thanks to the latent heat release by the PEG component within the developed composite. In addition, the introduction of magnetic CoFe2O4 can accelerate solar-thermal conversion through periodic electron motion by the Néel relaxation or Brownian relaxation. This resulted in an increase in the maximum output voltage and current by 13.7 and 11.5%, respectively, under an alternating magnetic field as a result of the magnetism-accelerated solar-thermo-electric conversion. This study offers an innovative approach for developing PCM-based advanced functional materials for solar energy utilization in clean and sustainable electricity generation.
