The luminescence thermal enhancement (LTE), in lanthanide-doped upconverting nanocrystals (UCNCs), has attracted extensive attention for its applications in anticounterfeiting, temperature sensing, and so on. Some mechanisms for LTE were proposed, including thermally induced water desorption from the surface of UCNCs, but conclusive evidence is absent for any of the mechanisms. Here, vacuumizing is employed in the experiment for the LTE in NaYF4:Ho3+/Yb3+ UCNCs, and significantly promoted LTE is observed. The 300–450–300 K temperature cycling experiment in vacuum shows continuous luminescence enhancement without luminescence intensity recovery as in the cooling process in moisture air, indicating the effect of water desorption because water readsorption is blocked in vacuum. It is found that the Ho3+ 5I6 level can be deexcited by direct long-range energy transfer to water adsorbed at the surface of nanocrystals due to resonant coupling between the Ho3+ 5I6 → 5I7 transition and the −OH vibration of water. As a result, water desorption suppresses the 5I6 depopulation and thus enhances the luminescence of Ho3+. Finally, the regulation of upconversion LTE is realized by adjusting the size of nanocrystals and Ho3+ or Yb3+ concentrations. Our findings indicate that the vacuumizing technique is an effective method to distinguish water-desorption-induced LTE. This work deepens the understanding of LTE and offers insights into the regulation of LTE.

A janus polydopamine-coated Cu 2 O/ZnO nanoarchitectures (ZnCuO@PDA) is presented and show favorable applications in environmental remediation, specifically dye degradation. The nanoarchitectures consisted of a heterostructure co-composed of the N-type semiconductor ZnO and the narrow bandgap P-type semiconductor Cu 2 O as the core. The formation of the Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction lowered the rate of electron-hole complexation, and the PDA provided the nanomaterials with excellent photo-thermal properties and active sites, which worked together to enhance the degradation rate for dye by photothermal enhanced Fenton catalytic effect. Rhodamine B (RhB) was served as modal dye contaminant, then the degradation experiments showed that the low concentration of ZnCuO@PDA exhibited excellent dye degradation over a wide pH range. Furthermore, ZnCuO@PDA exhibits favorable biocompatibility and recyclability, making it an environmentally sustainable and economically multiphase catalytic system. This innovation presents a novel approach for effective dye degradation.

Enzyme immobilization has emerged as a promising strategy to facilitate the industrialization of biomolecules. However, immobilized systems are now still facing great challenges such as maintaining enzyme activity, large-scale manufacturing recovery and leaching or conformational changes of enzymes. Therefore, advanced enzyme immobilization techniques (efficient, stable and tunable catalysis) are currently an important challenge in this field. Here, enzyme@cyclodextrin covalent organic framework films are synthesized by template method and further constructed three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen bond-enhanced efficient MXene/enzyme membrane reactor. This strategy provides a spacious microenvironment for the release of enzyme molecules, a simpler process, an easier-to-etch template, a more biocompatible carrier. Furthermore, a versatile platform for interfacial photothermal and fast mass-transfer by constructing films with MXene. The obtained biocatalysts have excellent reusability, high activity and stability, which can be used as efficient biocatalysts for important industrial reactions. The enzyme membrane reactor is constructed by the ‘smart capsule ’ with enzyme@cyclodextrin-COF structure. The strategy can solve the challenging problems of the original previous enzyme immobilization system. Overall, a new idea is provided for the green, efficient, stable and sustainable general enzyme catalytic platform.

Water oxidation is an endothermic reaction; BiVO4-based photoanodes with good photothermal and catalytic properties would be propitious to achieve efficient water oxidation in theory. Herein, NiO/amorphous carbon/BiVO4 (NiO/C/BiVO4) and CoOx/amorphous carbon/BiVO4 (CoOx/C/BiVO4) films were prepared by a facile candle flame roasting approach, and further investigated as photoanodes for solar water oxidation. Compared to BiVO4 and C/BiVO4 photoanodes, better water oxidation performance was achieved on the CoOx/C/BiVO4 and NiO/C/BiVO4 photoanodes. At 1.23 V vs. RHE, the water oxidation photocurrent of the CoOx/C/BiVO4 and NiO/C/BiVO4 photoanodes was 2.32 and 2.41 times higher than that of the BiVO4 photoanode, respectively. The water oxidation activity on the CoOx/C/BiVO4 and NiO/C/BiVO4 photoanodes can be well maintained in the range of 84–87% after 120 min of constant reaction, which is higher than that on the BiVO4 photoanode (43% activity retained). The NiO/C/BiVO4 and CoOx/C/BiVO4 photoanodes having higher water oxidation performance can be attributed to the following integrated effects. (1) The p–n heterojunction effect of NiO/BiVO4 and CoOx/BiVO4 drives the directional transfer of holes to CoOx or NiO and weakens the carrier recombination on BiVO4. (2) Amorphous carbon, CoOx and NiO absorb and convert the long wavelength light (λ > 510 nm) into heat to improve the co-catalysis performance of CoOx and NiO, and enable the NiO/C/BiVO4 and CoOx/C/BiVO4 photoanodes for efficient water oxidation. The present work provides two effective BiVO4-based photoanodes for photothermal-enhanced water splitting, which could inspire the design and development of similar materials for photothermal-enhanced solar water splitting.

The construction of heterojunctions effectively suppresses the undesired recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. This work presents the rational design and preparation of a novel Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S/CoB (CZS/CoB) Schottky heterojunction tailored for photothermal-assisted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with the aid of the predictions of density functional theory (DFT). Under visible light irradiation, the hydrogen evolution rate of CZS/CoB reaches 2.56 times that of pure CZS, due to the formed Schottky heterojunction and photothermal properties, effectively inhibiting electron-hole recombination and boosting the photocatalytic reaction. Notably, with the help of the excellent magnetic properties of CoB, the as-synthesized CZS/CoB exhibits excellent magnetic separation property, which is crucial for practical application. The charge transfer pathways in the Schottky heterojunction were confirmed by experimental results and verified by DFT calculation results. This study presents a feasible strategy for the design and preparation of magnetic recyclable Schottky Heterojunction photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Overcoming thermal quenching is generally essential for the practical application of luminescent materials. It has been recently found that frameworks with negative thermal expansion (NTE) could be a promising candidate to engineer unconventional luminescence thermal enhancement. However, the mechanism through which luminescence thermal enhancement can be well tuned remains an open issue. In this work, enabled by altering ligands in a series of UiO-66 derived Eu-based metal–organic frameworks, it was revealed that the changes in the thermal expansion are closely related to luminescence thermal enhancement. The NTE of the aromatic ring part favors luminescence thermal enhancement, while contraction of the carboxylic acid part plays the opposite role. Modulation of functional groups in ligands can change the thermal vibration of aromatic rings and then achieve luminescence thermal enhancement in a wide temperature window. Our findings pave the way to manipulate the NTE and luminescence thermal enhancement based on ligand engineering.

Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA ) are a significant public health challenge, necessitating the development of innovative antibacterial strategies. Nanomaterials are recognized for their ability to serve as photothermal conversion agents, transforming light energy into heat for antibacterial applications. These materials act as biological enzymes capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), leveraging their catalytic activity to combat infections. While they show considerable promise, enhancing their ROS-generating efficiency and overall catalytic performance remains a critical challenge. In this work, a high catalytic bimetallic nanoplatform was developed, building on “large electronegativity difference induction/etch-assisted/diffusion termination” mechanism to improve antibacterial efficacy. The synthesized nanoparticles were found to exhibit exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency and surface defects, enabling efficient bacterial eradication. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that H-Pt 3 Sn nanoparticles effectively eliminated MRSA while significantly inhibiting and disrupting biofilms formed by the pathogen. The nanoparticles also facilitated tissue repair by modulating macrophage-related molecular markers. In conclusion, this study presents a promising photothermal synergistic nanosystem with high catalytic functionality for advanced anti-infective applications.

The chemotherapy effect is generally affected by the premature release of nanoplatform and multi-drug resistance. In light of the advantages of photothermal therapy (PTT) and cascade catalytic therapy, we developed a multi-sensitive drug delivery system (MHC-Au-P) by grafting the gold NPs onto the opening of mesoporous hollow carbon nanoparticles (MHC) using gold sulfur bonds. MHC had excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and GSH consumption function, serving as a carrier for highly loading doxorubicin (DOX). The gold NPs were used due to their diverse functions, including smart switches to block the release of harmful substances, PTT agents to enhance the thermogenic effect of MHC, and nanozymes with GOx-like activity. When physical conditions are normal, gold-sulfur bond, which serves as the link between MHC carrier and Au-NPs, was stable, but the stability will decrease when glutathione (GSH) concentration in tumor cytoplasm was high. The DOX loaded D@MHC-Au-P can be rapidly decomposed into DOX@MHC and gold NPs at high GSH concentration after reaching the tumor microenvironment. The separated Au-NPs was capable of catalyzing the oxidation of glucose to H 2 O 2 and glucuronic acid, providing raw materials and optimizing conditions for the POD-like enzyme catalysis of MHC. Under near-infrared irradiation, the release rate of drugs was further accelerated, GSH consumption rate, the catalytic rate of Au-NPs and MHC were further improved. The synergistic effect of D@MHC-Au-P for PTT-enhanced cascade catalytic therapy and chemotherapy was realized in vivo and in vitro with a combination index of 0.62. Therefore, D@MHC-Au-P can be used as a smart nanocarrier for photothermal-enhanced synergistic cascade catalysis and chemotherapy.

Herein, guided by the results of density functional theory prediction, the study rationally designs a hollow core–shell FeNi 2 S 4 @ZnIn 2 S 4 (FNS@ZIS) Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction for photocatalytic H 2 evolution with photothermal-assisted. The hollow FNS spheres offered substrate for coating the ZIS nanosheets, which can inhibit ZIS nanosheets from agglomerating into pellet, enrich the active site, increase specific surfaces, and raise the light absorption. Notably, due to its excellent photothermal properties, FNS core generated heat unceasingly inside under visible-light irradiation and effectively prevent the heat loss of the reaction system, which increased the local temperature of photocatalysts and thus accelerated the charge migration. In addition, the S-scheme heterojunction construction via in situ growth has a tight interface, which can facilitate the separation and transfer of carriers and achieve high redox potential. Owning to the distinctive construction, the hollow core–shell FNS@ZIS S-scheme heterojunction show extraordinary stability and photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate with 7.7 mmol h −1 g −1 , which is ≈15.2-fold than pristine ZIS. Based on the double evidence of theoretical predictions and experimental confirmations, the photothermal effect and electron transfer mechanism of this innovative material are investigated in depth by the following infrared thermography technology and deep DFT calculations.

Solar steam generation is an emerging strategy for water desalination using renewable solar energy and seawater resources. In order to convert solar energy into heat for seawater evaporation, we developed a bi-layered structure composite for high-efficient solar evaporation based on photothermal-enhanced arginine-doped polydopamine (APDA) and raw wood, which are biodegradable and sustainable. Note that the APDA coating layer exhibited improved optical absorption and photothermal conversion ability compared with conventional polydopamine (PDA) coating on account of the construction of donor-acceptor pairs within the APDA microstructure system. Density functional theory (DTF) calculation further confirmed that the energy bandgap of APDA could be narrowed though donor-acceptor microstructures and then enhanced the absorption spectrum. The resulting APDA-wood composite performed a solar vapor generation efficiency of ~77% on the condition of 1 sun illumination. The water evaporation process was quite stable over 100 cycles and the metal ions in seawater were almost eliminated after desalination. This amino acid-initiated cost-effective and facile coating method provided new opportunities to fabricate photothermal-enhanced coating materials for solar evaporation applications.

The new generation of smart wound dressings aims to encompass sensory restoration capabilities through multi-stimulation rather than merely focusing on skin rebuilding and repair. Wound dressings integrated with real-time measurement of wound motion can improve healing efficiency considerably by providing crucial guidance during the skin regeneration process. Herein, we report a conductive zwitterionic hydrogel dressing with photothermal and thermoelectric properties prepared using a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-modified polydopamine-functionalized bismuth telluride (PEDOT@PBT) sandwich-like nanosheet-incorporated poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate)/silk fibroin (PEDOT@PBT-PSBMA/SF) semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel, which can accelerate chronic wound healing and monitor motion. With the incorporation of PEDOT@PBT nanosheets, the hydrogel exhibits remarkable photothermal and thermoelectric effects, endowing it with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli ( E. coli , 99.02%), Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus , 99.14%), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA , 97.70%). Additionally, the PEDOT@PBT-PSBMA/SF hydrogel can be employed in bioelectronics because of its good conductivity (0.13 S/m). In-vivo experiments show that the PEDOT@PBT-PSBMA/SF hydrogel actively promotes the regeneration of MRSA -infected wounds through immunomodulation, collagen deposition, and vascularization. Consequently, this study presents a promising strategy for the development of next-generation multifunctional hydrogel dressings with considerable potential for application in chronic skin wound therapy and bioelectronics. Statement of Significance Thermoelectric materials are increasingly being incorporated into hydrogels to enhance tissue regeneration. However, improving the thermoelectric efficiency while effectively harnessing the generated electricity for tissue regeneration remains a significant challenge. This study presents a multifunctional hydrogel dressing that integrates advanced photothermal and thermoelectric properties with real-time motion sensing, offering a breakthrough in chronic wound therapy. The PEDOT@PBT-PSBMA/SF hydrogel demonstrates exceptional antibacterial efficacy against E. coli, S. aureus, and MRSA, along with remarkable conductivity suitable for bioelectronic applications. In vivo results highlight its ability to accelerate wound healing through immunomodulation, enhanced collagen deposition, and improved vascularization. In conclusion, this multifunctional hydrogel holds great promise for future development as an integrated platform for diabetic skin wound repair and real-time monitoring.

Diabetic wounds are difficult to heal, and the key to wound healing is exudate management and effective disinfection. Inspired by the asymmetric wettability of Janus-structured lotus leaves, herein the study has presented the design of a biomimetic asymmetric Janus membrane that integrates unidirectional biofluid drainage and photothermal-enhanced evaporation/sterilization capabilities for accelerating diabetic wound healing. This Janus membrane is prepared by electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane containing polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of polypropylene (PP) nonwoven membrane. Such PP/PAN x%PDA Janus membrane enables antigravity “pumping” of the water from the hydrophobic PP layer to the hydrophilic PAN x%PDA layer within 22 s through contact points on the Janus interface. The incorporation of 30 wt% PDA in PAN imparts high photoabsorption and photothermal responsiveness, facilitating continuous volatilization of the exudate, achieving twice the displacement of water, and causing irreversible damage to bacteria. As a result, it effectively alleviates inflammation and cellular fibrosis while promoting collagen deposition due to its structure and antibacterial properties. Impressively, such photothermal-enhanced Janus membrane achieves an impressive closure rate of 96.7% for diabetic wounds, better than that of (59.8%) for conventional bandages. Therefore, this asymmetric Janus membrane offers a promising alternative for the healing of chronic diabetic wounds.
