Utilizing inexhaustible solar energy for water purification represents a green and sustainable solution to water scarcity. However, the developments of efficient, inexpensive, convenient and reliable photothermal materials remain a major challenge. Herein, a facile and versatile preparation strategy of sodium alginate (SA)-CuS composite coating with superior adhesion and stability has been proposed toward high-efficiency solar-driven interfacial evaporation. The fabrication process can be quickly completed in aqueous solution with cheap reagents. The SA-CuS coating can be firmly adhered on different substrates, which can withstand rinsing treatment, iterative freeze-thaw cycles as well as high and low pH environments. The SA-CuS coating can convert various substrates into photothermal materials with broad light absorption for desirable solar evaporation because of high CuS loading and rough surface. As a proof of concept, a wood evaporator covered with the SA-CuS coating can achieve a water evaporation rate of ∼2.2 kg m −2 h - 1 under one sun illumination, which is superior to most reported wood-based solar evaporators.

Solar-driven evaporation has received widespread attention in obtaining fresh water from seawater and wastewater. However, a major challenge in this process is maintaining a high evaporation rate, while preventing salt accumulation. Herein, a hydrophilic tannic acid (TA)-induced polypyrrole (PPy) coating layer with a controllable thickness was developed on nonwoven fabric using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. TA along with pyrrole (Py) molecules was first deposited on the substrate surface through noncovalent interactions. Then, Fe3+ was bonded with TA through metal coordination, acting as an oxidant for the polymerization of Py molecules. After the LbL cycle process, a uniform TA/PPy coating was formed on the fabric surface, exhibiting excellent hydrophilicity and solar absorption performance. The roof-structure evaporation system was then built by placing the fabric on the roof-structure support, ensuring that seawater flows from top to bottom. This structure helps to remove the concentrated brine from the fabric at the bottom of the evaporator, thereby preventing the accumulation of salt crystals. This design results in a high evaporation rate of 2.67 kg m–2 h–1 and a comparable evaporation efficiency of 89.6% under 1 sun irradiation. It is possible to achieve rapid and continuous evaporation even with high-concentration saline water containing 21% NaCl. Therefore, this study provides a simple construction of TA/PPy coatings suitable for different substrates and demonstrates the design of a roof-structure evaporation system for efficiently producing fresh water from seawater and high-salinity wastewater.

In recent years, photothermal coatings have attracted researchers much attentions for anti-icing applications. However, the overheating due photothermal effect at midday or in non-icing period is inevitably encountered and results in the speed-up aging of the coatings. Herein, a reversible thermochromic phase-transition heat storage coating (TCHSC) containing thermochromic microcapsules is designed to adjust photothermal efficiency by discoloration during non-icing period. In cold surroundings, the coating surface shows black color and presents a high photothermal efficiency, which can transform solar energy into heat for anti-icing and de-icing effectively. Yet, the color of coating turns to white spontaneously in hot surroundings with a low photothermal generation efficiency, which avoids the overheating of coating. Besides, discoloration is caused by forming unconjuncted structure in thermochromic dye, and meanwhile the heat is stored during phase transition process of dye, which helps to adjust the temperature rising and cooling rate of coating and contributes to de/anti-icing. What’s more, discoloration temperature of thermochromic capsules can be tuned by adjusting the melting point of dye in thermochromic capsules. The TCHSC with heat regulation provides a new strategy to tackle the conventional overheating issue of photothermal anti-icing coating in summer or at midday, paving a key step towards its real applications.

Anti/de-icing coatings to equipment surface are emergingly becoming an essential protection against ice formation and accumulation, especially when they serve in harsh environments. Herein, a novel approach for obtaining photothermal superhydrophobic anti/de-icing FCF-BP/SiO 2 coating with prominent abrasion resistance properties was presented. The fluoroalkyl silane and amino silane were polymerized at elevated temperatures and then closely combined with the resin and curing agent to obtain a film-forming polymer. This polymerization process involved the reaction of amino group on the surface of the modified fluorocarbon resin with the isocyanate group in the curing agent. Then the polypyrrole-coated basalt scales (BP) and SiO 2 NPs were employed to the modified coating system to construct a wear-resistant microscopic surface structure by the inverse infusion process (IIP). The water contact angle (CA) and the sliding angle (SA) of the tested coating was up to 155° ± 2° and 1.5° ± 0.5°, respectively, delaying the icing time to 656 s and maintaining the ice adhesion strength lower than 20 kPa after several icing-deicing cycles. It was verified that the FCF-BP/SiO 2 coating remained superhydrophobic and exhibited excellent mechanical durability even after 300 times of abrasion with sandpaper and 100 times of tape-peeling. Even at −10 °C, the frost (accumulated at −10 °C for 2 h) or ice cube (0.5 g) on the FCF-BP/SiO 2 coating could be effectively removed by 1.00 Sun within approximately 309 s and 760 s, respectively. This provides potential applications for fabricating functional anti/de-icing materials in some prospective fields including marine or aviation fields.

Solar steam generation is a robust and environmentally friendly way to obtain fresh water and alleviate the water shortage problem. Although a wide variety of steam generation devices have been well documented, most fabricated materials are often only suitable for one device and generally difficult to be removed, resulting in a disposable device. This may raise serious concerns about the total cost issues, particularly for those devices with complex and well-tailored microstructures. Thus, it is urgent to develop a robust and dynamic photothermal coating that can be easily removed and flexibly switched between different installations with stable photothermal conversion ability. In this work, we report a degradable and recyclable metal-phenolic network-based photothermal coating assembled from two kinds of naturally occurring building blocks [gallic acid (GA) and Fe(III)]. Hydrophilic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was selected as the substrate, resulting in the robust GA@Fe(III)@PVDF membrane, which can achieve a high evaporation rate of 1.539 kg m–2 h–1 and a superb steam generation efficiency of 90.2% under 1 sun illumination. Impressively, the GA@Fe(III) coating can be degraded under acidic condition rapidly, and the recovered PVDF can be recoated by the GA@Fe(III) networks again. The steam generation performance of the recovered GA@Fe(III)@PVDF can remain stable over 150 degrading and recoating cycles. We believed that this work could offer opportunities to fabricate low-cost, sustainable, and degradable photothermal coatings for solar steam generation.

Anti-/de-icing of glass surfaces is of great importance in present daily life. The long-standing challenge in this field is largely due to the lack of stable multifunctional coatings that can be conveniently and economically constructed on the glass surface, and more importantly, are capable of retaining the original transparency of glass ranging from the visible to the near infrared spectrum. Herein, a direct spraying sol method on the glass surface to prepare a highly transparent and photothermal composite coating is reported. Such multifunctional coating of Cu7S4 nanoparticles/organo-silicone sols has displayed a good photothermal conversion property and hydrophobic property and therefore yields excellent anti-icing and self-melting ice properties. The condensation time of water droplets can be extended to 86 s even at −10 °C, which is 3.42 times delayed relative to ordinary blank glass. And the adhesion strength of ice is largely reduced to 72 KPa, which is as low as ∼1/3 that of ordinary glass. Meanwhile, the subcooling of adhering droplets is reduced to −12 °C under one solar illumination condition and exhibits a rapid de-icing capability. More impressively, the prepared functional coating glass shows an outstanding transmittance of more than 75% in the visible region, while it is over the minimum glass transmittance limit allowed by Safety Standards for Glass (GB9656-2016, China). In addition, the multifunctional photothermal glass coating exhibits good physical/chemical stability, which facilitates the long-term application of the coating in different environments.

In response to the surface icing issues of infrastructure and industrial equipment in extreme low-temperature environments, this study overcomes the energy consumption and durability limitations of traditional anti-icing/de-icing technologies by developing a scalable photothermal-superhydrophobic dual-functional composite coating. The coating is constructed through a “surface-anchored assembly” strategy: graphene (Gr) with few layers is used as the photothermal conversion core, which is modified by polydopamine (PDA) and covalently bonded with octyltriethoxysilane (OTES)-modified titanium dioxide (TiO₂). This is then anchored onto a semi-cured epoxy resin matrix, achieving efficient enrichment and firm binding of functional particles on the surface. The resulting coating exhibits both broad-spectrum photothermal response and mechanically stable superhydrophobic properties (static contact angle >155°, − <5°), significantly enhancing anti-icing/de-icing performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the charge transfer mechanism driven by the work function difference (ΔΦ = 0.64 eV) at the Gr-TiO₂ interface, explaining the enhanced photothermal performance at the microscopic level. Moreover, the heat transfer mechanism during the anti-icing/de-icing process is analyzed through a thermal conduction model. This work provides an efficient, stable, and scalable solution for anti-icing/de-icing in extreme environments through a three-dimensional synergy of material design, process innovation, and mechanism analysis.

Corrosion and surface icing inflict significant economic costs and resource depletion. The development of integrated protection strategies that combine both anti-corrosion and anti-icing functionalities is therefore crucial, yet remains a formidable scientific and engineering challenge. In this paper, we fabricated a fluorine-free photothermal superhydrophobic coating for integrated passive anti-icing, active deicing, and anti-corrosion applications via a facile spray-coating method. The coating, denoted as CB/ZIF-8@PDA@HD-POS@PSZ, was constructed using carbon black (CB) and ZIF-8@PDA as the key photothermal components. It exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (CA) of 153.2 ± 0.5° and a sliding angle (SA) of 1.1 ± 0.2°, along with efficient photothermal conversion under simulated solar irradiation and superior mechanical stability. Electrochemical tests revealed a four order of magnitude increase in the low-frequency impedance modules (|Z| 0.01Hz ) and a three order of magnitude reduction in corrosion current density ( I corr ) compared to the uncoated substrates. Under conditions of −20 °C, water droplets on the coated surface exhibited 5.6 times longer freezing time than that on the uncoated substrate. Under 1.0 sun illumination, the frozen water droplets were completely melted within 409 s, demonstrating outstanding passive delayed icing and active photothermal deicing capabilities. We believe the developed fluorine-free photothermal superhydrophobic coating offers an energy-efficient and multifunctional strategy for combating corrosion and icing in harsh environments.

Solar driven interfacial vapor generation is considered to be an effective strategy to alleviate the impact of water crisis on human activities. However, great efforts of researchers have been devoted to improving the solar steam generation efficiency, while less attention has been paid to the long-term stability of evaporators. Herein, we proposed a robust core–shell structured evaporator prepared by a simple fast curing assisted spray-coating method. Owing to the inherent superelasticity of melamine–formaldehyde (MF) sponge, the finely designed novel 3D core–shell structure, and the quick curing of branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) and 5-pentaerythritol pentaacrylate (5Acl) induced special knot shaped photothermal coating, the as-obtained evaporator (CB/MF) performed well in vapor generation with a high water evaporation rate of 2.082 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 sun illumination, and the evaporation efficiency reached 123.5%, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art artificial solar evaporator. Even in strict application situations, such as long-term recycling testing for 40 h, 500 compression-release cycles (20%, 40% or 60%), sonication for 12 h, or shaking for 30 h, the water evaporation rate of the obtained evaporator remains at a high level of above 2.00 kg m−2 h−1. Additionally, the evaporator shows effective purification toward high-concentration brine, acid–base solutions, simulated seawater, dye wastewater, and heavy metal wastewater, as well as reliable pure water, providing an outdoor application. With the advantages of a high evaporation rate, stable long-term vapor generation, and effective purification toward various non-potable water sources, we believe that the fabricated core–shell structured CB/MF evaporator is a promising candidate for practical solar steam generation.

Solar Vapor Generation (SVG) is a new green production technology that is gaining increasing attention for obtaining fresh water from seawater or wastewater. Currently, the evaporator substrates face challenges such as complex fabrication processes, high cost, and poor biodegradability. Lignocellulosic sponge (LS), as a sustainable material, exhibits characteristics such as hydrophilicity, excellent insulation properties, lightweight nature, and low cost. It is considered a highly promising material for evaporators. In this study, LS was modified to create an efficient evaporator with excellent salt resistance. The polyvinyl alcohol/carbon black (PVA/CB) gel-based photothermal coating was introduced to enhance the water evaporation rate significantly on the surface of the lignocellulosic sponge. Subsequently, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating was sprayed on the interfacial steam generator surface to form a hydrophobic layer, effectively resisting salt accumulation on the evaporator surface. Simultaneously, the incorporation of degreased cotton as a one-dimensional water pathway enhanced the salt ion backflow and prevented salt crystallization at the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface. The resulting porous sponge-based photothermal evaporator (PCP-LS) achieved a high evaporation rate of up to 3.2 kg m −2 h −1 and demonstrated stable operation in high-concentration saltwater (20wt%). PCP-LS, as a cost-effective, easily fabricated, salt-tolerant, and environmentally friendly solar evaporator, holds great potential in seawater/wastewater treatment.

Photothermal superhydrophobic coatings offered dual functionality by enabling both passive anti-icing and active de-icing. However, their practical application was often limited by issues such as low efficiency and poor durability. In this study, we reported a highly efficient photothermal superhydrophobic coating with a coral-mimetic structure—referred to as MCNT-PS Coating—that was amenable to large-scale fabrication. The coating was constructed by cross-linking composite particles with a “particle-vine” structure via an amide reaction. Mimicking the natural growth of coral, a spraying method was employed to deposit a rough surface structure. The introduction of a phase separation process imparted the coating with hierarchical surface roughness, increasing both the distribution density and uniformity of coral-like microstructures. Simultaneously, a nanoporous network was formed, providing stable superhydrophobicity and multiple mechanisms for light absorption and reflection. The coating exhibited excellent static anti-icing performance, with a delayed freezing time at −15 °C that was 4.2 times longer than that of the bare substrate. Moreover, it showed extremely low ice adhesion of only 0.3 N under −20 °C conditions. Owing to its efficient photothermal response, the coating could rapidly heat to 49 °C within 10 s under standard solar irradiation (1000 W/m 2 ), reaching a saturation temperature of 95 °C within 180 s. Compared to the uncoated substrate, the MCNT-PS Coating demonstrated superior photothermal de-icing performance under low-temperature conditions, with a defrosting efficiency twice that of the original surface. In addition, the coating showed excellent durability and scalability, indicating strong potential for practical, large-scale applications in real-world environments.

Ice accretion induced by extreme weather conditions poses a serious threat to the safe operation of infrastructure. Although superhydrophobic coatings exhibit excellent passive anti-icing performance, they generally lack active deicing capabilities. In this study, a novel photothermal superhydrophobic coating (PM-CPPS) is developed by integrating hydrangea-like hollow carbon nanospheres (CPPS) with a water-soluble fluorine-free polysiloxane (PMATE), enabling a synergistic effect of passive anti-icing and active deicing. The hierarchical micro/nanostructure and low surface energy of the PM-CPPS coating significantly enhanced its hydrophobicity (WCA > 157°), and the photothermal effect enabled complete melting of surface ice within 93 s. Experimental results showed that at −15°C, the coating extended the freezing time of water droplets by approximately 20-fold. Additionally, interfacial adhesion is improved via an epoxy–amine ring-opening reaction between epoxy groups and polydopamine (PDA), allowing the coating to maintain superhydrophobicity after 200 sandpaper abrasion cycles and 160 tape-peeling tests. PM-CPPS exhibited an ultra-low initial ice adhesion strength (5.25 kPa) and a stable photothermal conversion efficiency of 83.24%. This study offers an efficient and durable coating design strategy for long-term anti-icing and deicing applications in infrastructure under extreme environmental conditions.
