Waterborne health issues continue to grow despite the large number of available solutions. Current sterilization techniques to fight with waterborne diseases struggle to meet the demands on cost, efficiency and reach. Effective alternatives are pressingly required. Here we introduce Prussian blue coated ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 @PB) composites for water sterilization. The composites exhibit superior photothermal inactivation of bacteria under solar-light irradiation, with nearly complete inactivation of bacterial cells in only 15 min. Even for the mixed bacteria in authentic water matrices, the composites show excellent bacterial inactivation performance. Moreover, the highly magnetized iron core of the Fe 3 O 4 @PB enables magnetic separation and recycling. Multiple cycle runs reveal that Fe 3 O 4 @PB composites have exceptional stability and reusability. This work demonstrates a scalable, low-cost, high-efficiency and reusable sterilization method to improve water quality and safety.

The dual-function antibacterial and photothermal melanin-like nanoparticles (Ag NPs@Fe 3+ -SMNPs) were prepared and used for fabric modification. The modified fabric had excellent photothermal and antibacterial performance. By Xenon lamp irradiation, the temperature of the fabric surface rises rapidly to over 80 °C in 30 s. The modified fabric had the photothermal sterilization rates of 99% against E. coli or S. aureus after 10 min of Xenon lamp irradiation. Meanwhile, Ag NPs provided excellent antibacterial properties to the modified fabric used in daily life, and the antibacterial rate of the modified fabric was 99%. Additionally, the modified fabric showed excellent air and moisture permeability, and had excellent photothermal and antibacterial properties after 20 times of washing and 100 times of rubbing. The modified fabric was modified with the antibacterial and photothermal dual-function melanin-like nanoparticles , showing great potential in personal protective equipment (such as masks) to meet people's needs in the future.

Microbial contamination of food is a critical public health issue worldwide, making the rapid, efficient, and safe sensing strategies for foodborne microbes in urgent need. In this work, a plasmonic microneedle (MN) array patch was developed for rapid extraction and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of a model bacteria, Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). A hydrophilic MN matrix was firstly prepared by crosslinking [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (TMA), 2-carboxyethyl acrylate (CAA), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in a micro-mold. Then the obtained MN patch was treated with ozone and coated with SERS-active gold nanopopcorns (GNpops) that were modified with the specific aptamer towards E. coli . The resultant plasmonic MN patch could extract E. coli from agarose simulant in 3 min and was capable of on-MN SERS analysis with a detection limit of 143 CFU/g. The proposed detection method exhibited great specificity to E. coli and was feasible for evaluating the E. coli contamination of commercial mutton samples. Moreover, the extracted bacteria could be effectively inactivated through photothermal sterilization. The work opened a new avenue for simplifying the detection procedures for microorganisms and provided a potential approach for rapid and on-site microbial monitoring through the SERS-active MN patch.

Diabetic wound healing remains a persistent clinical challenge where exudate management and targeted disinfection constitute critical therapeutic priorities. Drawing inspiration from nature’s asymmetric wettability in Janus-structured lotus leaves, we engineered a biomimetic wound dressing system that synergistically integrates directional biofluid transport and photothermal/photodynamic sterilization. The hierarchically structured PP/PAN-xCu-TCPP fiber dressing combines a hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) substrate with an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous matrix incorporating copper-porphyrin metal–organic frameworks (Cu-TCPP MOFs). This Janus architecture orchestrates unidirectional fluid dynamics via surface tension and contact angle differentials from the hydrophobic to the hydrophilic layer, effectively preventing exudate accumulation while maintaining physiologically moist microenvironments. The PP/PAN-20%Cu-TCPP fiber dressing confers spatiotemporal therapeutic control under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and photothermal bactericidal effects. In Staphylococcus aureus-infected diabetic mice models, the dual-laser activated PP/PAN-20%Cu-TCPP system demonstrates excellent microbial eradication, immunomodulation by suppressing hyperinflammation and directing macrophage polarization toward regenerative M2 phenotypes, and angiogenic potentiation via dual phototherapeutic activation of endothelial cells and stromal remodeling. This multifunctional paradigm effectively bridges the critical gap between infection control and pro-regenerative microenvironment establishment, thereby accelerating wound repair.
