Water evaporation driven by solar energy is an efficient, renewable, and environmentally friendly method to purify polluted or saline water. However, current solar-powered evaporation systems generally suffer from the poor stability, high materials cost, and complex fabrication processes. In this work, an inexpensive and versatile photothermal membrane (PTM) is prepared with basalt-fibers, which are prepared from natural basalt and synthesized by fiber forming and annealing. Owing to the special chemical composition and physical structure, the basalt-fiber PTM is very robust and corrosion resistant in extreme environments such as a strong acid, organic solvent, and alkali. The water evaporation processes are investigated and the floating-with-insulator mode shows the lowest heat dissipation and highest water evaporation rate. The basalt-fiber fabric is optimized by carbonization and a vaporization rate of 1.50 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and energy utilization efficiency of 82.5% are achieved for evaporation of pure water. The basalt-fiber PTM can be hand washed at least 30 times without efficiency deterioration and the process can be readily scaled up to address commercial needs.

For the solar water evaporation system, there are no reports on the self-healing support, which is crucial for the sustainable use of solar evaporation membrane. In this work, a self-healing hydrogel is prepared via free radical copolymerization with covalent cross-linking and coordination cross-linking and is used as a photothermal water evaporation support. The photothermal material is then introduced into the hydrogel by physically doping acetylene carbon black. At the same time, inverted micro-pyramids are fabricated on the surface of the hydrogel by soft imprint to increase the utilization efficiency of incident light. The water evaporation rate of the composite membrane can reach 1.58 kg m−2 h−1, and the breaking elongation is 1580%. It can self-heal after it is completely broken, and can still be stretched 3 times its original length. The design of this self-healing photothermal membrane will provide a new idea for its application in a harsh outdoor environment.

Solar-driven water evaporation has been proven to be a promising and efficient method for the energy crisis and clean water shortage issues. Herein, we strategically design and fabricate a novel nonstoichiometric CoWO4–x-deposited foam nickel (NF) membrane (CoWO4–x@NF) that possesses all the desirable optical, thermal, and wetting properties for efficient water evaporation and purification. The broadband absorption of CoWO4–x nanoparticles (NPs) obtained by hydrogen reduction contributes to light-to-heat conversion, while NF with a three-dimensional porous structure can support CoWO4–x NPs and ensure the rapid flow of water molecules during the water evaporation process. We systematically explore and compare the outdoor water evaporation performance of the pure water group, NF group, and CoWO4–x@NF group, and the results show that CoWO4–x@NF performs well under natural sunlight irradiation (water evaporation: 2.91 kg m–2). Significantly, under solar irradiation, the remarkable reduction of Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta in lake water is achieved in the CoWO4–x@NF membrane-administered group, and these two algae are the main factors for eutrophication of the lake water. Our work highlights the great potentials of the CoWO4–x@NF membrane as a device for realizing outdoor solar energy-driven water evaporation and proposes a new strategy for purifying the eutrophication of the lake water.

Solar-driven interface evaporation (SDIE) is considered to be a crucial solution for the global water shortage due to its ability to directly produce fresh water with minimal carbon footprint. However, efficient evaporation processes have typically only been achieved in simple systems, and the removal of oil and ions from complex oily seawater to produce clean water remains a serious challenge. In this study, we developed a novel asymmetric superhydrophilic/amphiphobic Janus photothermal membrane (F@CMPsHM-CHM). It employed a hydrogel composite film composed of CMPsHM as a substrate and was created by simple and direct single-side 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane/candle soot (PFDTCS/CS) particle spraying. The lower layer of the membrane serves multiple functions such as water supply, insulation and support, while the top PFDTCS/CS coating provides liquid repellency (with a water contact angle of >150° and an oil contact of >120°) and photothermal capability. The membrane’s micro/nano composite structure enables it to absorb up to 97 % of light across the entire solar spectrum, and it can achieve an evaporation rate of 1.67 kg m -2 h −1 in pure water evaporation. Also, it can achieve an evaporation rate of 1.4 kg m -2 h −1 in oil–water emulsion evaporation under 1 kW m −2 solar irradiation. Importantly, the membrane demonstrates long-term stable evaporation for 6 h and ion removal in complex oil/salt dual systems emulsion. With its scalable manufacturing process, excellent flexibility, unique asymmetrical microstructure, and high and stable evaporation performance in a variety of environments, our strategy provides new solutions for efficient SDIE in real-world complex environments, thereby expanding the applications of photothermal materials.

Passive freshwater generation via photothermal membranes represents a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for the water crisis. Herein, we describe a unique method for producing organic fouling-resistant Ag-CNTs/PVDF photothermal membranes using CNTs (multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes) decorated with silver (Ag) nanoparticles deposited on the hydrophilic polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) substrate via vacuum filtration. CNTs were decorated with different loads of silver nanoparticles via a wet-impregnation technique. The prepared Ag-CNTs nanocomposites were fully characterized, and the fabricated anti-fouling Ag-CNTs/PVDF photothermal membranes with different loadings of Ag-CNTs nanocomposite were investigated for their surface morphology, roughness, light absorption, surface temperature, contact angle measurement, water evaporation, and antifouling performances. The optimized Ag-CNTs/PVDF photothermal membrane achieved 95% solar light absorption at a surface temperature of 82 ℃ ± 0.5 with significant hydrophobic behavior due to the plasmonic impact of silver nanoparticles. The evaporation rate reached 1.2 kg.m − 2 .h − 1 using 3.5% NaCl solution (simulated to seawater) with a solar thermal conversion efficiency of 75.6% ± 2.0. The optimized Ag-CNTs/PVDF photothermal membrane showed relative stability in the evaporation rate compared to other membranes using 100 mg.L − 1 humic acid solution for 600 min after one week under natural evaporation with the same solution. The developed membrane showed an effective water evaporation rate with organic matter resistance that makes it highly recommended for application to any water source with the capability of resisting harsh conditions of the environment and with continuous freshwater generation.

So far, solar distillation based on photothermal membranes has attracted ever-increasing attention in less developed regions for water purification. The raw water resources for solar evaporation were generally beyond the natural hydrological cycle and are highly saline and corrosive. In this process, a core–shell structured PDA/PEI/PPy@PI nanofibrous membrane (NFM), comprising a robust PI nanofibrous substrate, PPy photothermal layer and anticorrosion PDA/PEI layer, was developed as a photothermal membrane, which exhibited broadband solar absorption (93.0%) and sustained anti-corrosion capacity for 30 days. Besides, the core–shell structure can effectively prevent the swelling of the membrane and maintain excellent mechanical strength even in the wet state. An evaporation system based on the PDA/PEI/PPy@PI NFM achieved a high solar evaporation rate of ≈1.43 kg m−2 h−1, corresponding to a light-to-vapor efficiency of ≈86.9% under 1 sun illumination. Due to its sustained corrosion-resistance, mechanical durability in the wet state and high solar evaporation capacity, this NFM is expected to have great potential for long-term solar distillation applications.

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation has emerged as a promising approach for green and sustainable production of clean water to alleviate freshwater shortage, especially in remote and arid regions. However, limited photothermal conversion efficiency and poor water transport remain challenges to achieve highly efficient solar water evaporation. In this study, we propose a facile strategy to construct a novel Janus photothermal membrane by combining highly hydrophobic nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulating cobalt nanoparticles (Co@C/NCNT) with a hydrophilic nylon membrane, which enables simultaneous realization of asymmetric surface wettability and multiple optical absorption pathways. The as-fabricated Janus Co@C/NCNT evaporator achieves a high solar water evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 and an evaporation efficiency of 89.7% under one sun irradiation, which are well maintained after 10 cycles. Meanwhile, the Janus evaporator can be used for practical purification of various simulated wastewater, such as dyeing sewage and heavy metal wastewater, with high rejection efficiency and long-term stability. This Janus evaporator design provides an efficient, low-cost solar water evaporation system for potential water purification .

Solar-driven photothermal conversion vacuum membrane distillation (SVMD) becomes an energy-efficient water treatment thanks to the thermal localization of photothermal membranes. Membrane photothermal activity and distillation performance are essential for creating photothermal composite membranes. Herein, a CuO/CF-PVDF photothermal composite membrane has been designed with flower-like copper oxide (CuO/CF) photothermal active-layer and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microporous hydrophobic separation layer. Firstly, the flower-like CuO/CF layer with the light trapping was obtained by in-situ surface oxidation on the copper foam (CF) surface. Then, by the NIPS method, PVDF microporous hydrophobic layer was scraped on one side of the CuO/CF photothermal active-layer and firmly fixed on the porous surface of CuO/CF layer by anchoring effect. The light trap consisted of CuO micron flowers and Cu(OH) 2 nanowires. The gaps among the petals increased the light refractive rate and absorption area, thus enhancing the photothermal performance of the CuO/CF. Under 1 kW‧m −2 solar irradiation, the absorption rate reached up to 95 %, and the photothermal conversion efficiency achieved 94 %. For the SVMD process, compared to current research, the CuO/CF-PVDF achieved the permeate flux of 3.34 kg‧m −2 ‧h −1 and energy efficiency of 88 % under average feed temperature. Overall, the CuO/CF-PVDF membrane has promising potential for desalination by fully using sustainable energy.

Achieving materials with low solar reflectance and minimal thermal losses is crucial for efficient solar energy harvesting, but simultaneously attaining these properties is challenging. To address this, we introduce a novel approach by engineering EGaIn photothermal nanoparticles, featuring an EGaIn core as the photothermal layer, encapsulated within a precisely designed conjugated organic shell. The conjugated organic layer was synthesized through a combination of aminoundecanoic acid and tannic acid, utilizing Schiff base and Michael addition reactions. This combination effectively regulates the thickness of the oxide layer on the EGaIn surface, thereby preserving photothermal efficiency and enhancing the interaction between EGaIn and the polymer matrix. Our method involves a hole-making process that firmly adheres nanoparticles to porous material surfaces, creating a photothermal cavity structure. This design integrates photothermal material with an insulating architecture, enhancing solar energy absorption and reducing heat loss. In practical applications, the prepared porous membrane achieved a temperature increase of 15 °C above ambient conditions, generating an output voltage of 100 mV and an output current of 38.8 mA in photothermal power generation. By overcoming traditional limitations of solar energy materials, this research establishes a way for the design and application of materials that successfully balance high solar absorption with minimal thermal losses. The developed membrane could play a pivotal role in the next generation of sustainable and efficient solar energy harvesting technologies, paving the way for more reliable and scalable renewable energy solutions.

As a promising desalination technology, photothermal membrane distillation (PMD) is confronted with challenges such as low freshwater yield and membrane fouling. Herein, we have introduced a copper-based metal-organic framework (Cu-CAT) into a hydrophilic/superhydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) Janus tree-like nanofiber membrane (TLNMs) to construct photothermal Janus TLNMs (P-Janus TLNMs) for enhanced PMD. Given the exceptional photothermal properties of the hydrophilic Cu-CAT layer, coupled with the fine pore structure and elevated porosity characteristics of the superhydrophobic PVDF TLNMs, P-Janus TLNMs have demonstrated outstanding performance when integrated into a PMD system. Upon exposure to solar illumination of 1 kW·m −2 , the P-Janus TLNMs achieved a remarkable surface temperature of 88 °C, yielding a permeation flux of 1.46 L m −2 h −1 , a salt rejection rate exceeding 99.99 %, and an energy utilization rate of 81 %. Furthermore, after 20 days of continuous operation with simulated seawater containing oil and surfactant, the P-Janus TLNMs presented a salt rejection of 99.9 % and a stable permeation flux of 1.71 L m −2 h −1 at the feed/permeate temperatures of 24/20 °C. This work introduces a novel membrane with immense potential for boosting permeation flux and enhancing anti-fouling properties in PMD, thereby advancing the frontier of sustainable seawater desalination.

Solar vapor generation utilizes ubiquitous solar energy to address the issue of global water shortage. However, its large-scale field deployment is greatly hampered by inefficient solar absorption, moderate evaporation efficiency and high cost. Here, we report a new hybrid photothermal membrane, named broadband plasmonic Cu 2−x Te nanowire (bpCu 2−x Te) membrane, for interfacial solar evaporation to produce freshwater from various water sources. The bpCu 2−x Te membrane features excellent broadband solar absorption (~95.9%), high porosity and hydrophilicity , and low thermal conductivity (0.55 W/(m K)), which enables a water evaporation rate as high as 4.3 kg/(m 2 h) with the evaporation efficiency of up to 96% under 3 kW/m 2 solar irradiation . The evaporation performance of the present Cu 2−x Te membrane can be maintained even after it recycles multiple times under various solar irradiance, indicating excellent durability and stability. Efficient solar desalination of seawater is further demonstrated with the bpCu 2−x Te membrane to deliver drinkable water. The combination of scalable fabrication ability, low cost and excellent solar evaporation performance of the bpCu 2−x Te membrane highlights the potential for seawater purification and desalination in field applications.

Solar vapor production is considered an effective and environmentally friendly method of reducing freshwater shortages. However, designing an affordable solar evaporator with a simple method is still a challenge. Herein, motivated by the transpiration of plants, a full cattail leaf-based solar evaporator has been developed. In this solar evaporator, the photothermal membrane has been exploited by simply cross-linking the carbonized cattail leaf and the fibers from the alkali-treated cattail leaf with sodium alginate. The original cattail leaf with its square water transport channels and inherent hydrophilicity is employed to pump the bottom water to the upper photothermal membrane. Thanks to the synergistic effect between the photothermal membrane and the cattail leaf-based water transporter, the full cattail leaf-derived solar evaporator acquires an evaporation rate of 1.46 kg m –2 h –1 with a solar thermal efficiency of 87.48% under 1-solar (1 kW m –2 ). Fifteen-cycle experiments indicate that this solar evaporator has excellent stability. Outdoor experiments demonstrate that the full cattail leaf-based solar evaporator can effectively desalinate seawater and purify dyeing wastewater. Moreover, the total cost of the chemicals applied to manufacture 1 m 2 of cattail leaf-based photothermal membrane is approximately 3.1 dollars. This strategy is expected to turn freely available biomass into a potentially valuable solar evaporator with a simple cross-linking method and an affordable price that offers a promising future for alleviating the global freshwater crisis.
