Thermal/photothermal-induced flexible folding and rapid soft-to-rigid transition in dark fiber composite structural components

Xinchao Sun,Qiankun Zhang,Jiawei Li,Chao Wu,Xiaonan Wang,Zhongjun Cheng,Zhimin Xie,Hanyu Ma,Dongjie Zhang,Yuyan Liu

Foldable and deployable structures find extensive applications in space deployment equipment, yet dark fiber composites (DFCs) utilized for crafting these structures still grapple with the trade-offs among resin flow, curing speed, and degree of cure. To address these issues, a novel thermal/photothermal (TPT) system was developed, leveraging two-stage and photo-induced photothermal synergistic techniques. The first stage involves a room-temperature click reaction, producing a gel intermediate state with an impressive fracture elongation rate of up to 123.15 %, allowing for arbitrary flexible folding and deployment. The second stage involves photo-induced photothermal curing, where the heat generated during the curing process (reaching temperatures up to 131.5 °C) can trigger thermal curing. The second-stage sample can achieve a Young's modulus up to 22,000 times that of the first stage. When applied in the fabrication of DFCs, the TPT system significantly enhances the curing degree of the resin on the backside of the DFCs, achieving a rapid soft-to-rigid transformation within 1 min. This represents a significant improvement over thermal curing in terms of speed and energy consumption. The use of DFCs in structural components has demonstrated their capability for flexible folding and rapid soft-to-rigid transformation.

Facile Repair of Anti-Corrosion Polymeric Composite Coatings Based on Light Triggered Self-Healing

Yue Ma,Yuman Yang,Daruo Cao,Jun Fang,Cheng Zhu,Meng Yang,Liang Fang,Chunhua Lu,Zhongzi Xu

Photothermally induced self-healing coatings are widely reported, while their application scenarios are rarely taken with concern. In addition, there is a need to achieve the balance between good properties and self-healing behaviors for closing the gap between academic research and engineering applications. Here, self-healing composite coatings are designed based on silane-modified epoxy chains with reversible crosslinking points and multifunctional fillers of cerium oxide nanoparticles grown on graphene nanosheets, and their applications are demonstrated for restricted regions. Diglycidyl ether-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) is co-polymerized with diglycidylether of bisphenol A with the weight ratio of 1/99–10/90 to achieve surface-tension driven crack closure, while dangling furan groups contribute to reversible crosslinking points via Diels–Alder reaction. Cerium oxide nanoparticles and graphene nanosheets enhance anti-corrosion properties, and graphene nanosheets also act as photothermal fillers. The results show that pencil hardness, polarized resistance, and coating resistance are highly improved via the introduction of multifunctional fillers at 1 and 2 phr. Good thermally and photothermally induced self-healing is demonstrated. This work provides a new application thought for light triggered self-healing coatings that can be used for restricted regions including inner walls of pipelines and reactors.

Photothermal-induced partial Leidenfrost superhydrophobic surface as ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering platform for the detection of neonicotinoid insecticides

Zhong Feng Gao,Ying Xu Li,Lu Ming Dong,Lin Lin Zheng,Jin Ze Li,Yizhong Shen,Fan Xia

In view of the urgent demand to determine neonicotinoid insecticides in real samples, we first report a photothermal-induced partial Leidenfrost superhydrophobic (PIPLS) sensor using gold colloid and highly roughened SiO 2 /PDMS surface coupled with few-layered MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) nanosheets for the ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of neonicotinoid insecticides. Under the remote control of near-infrared light, the temperature of the sensor can rise to 170 ℃ within 10 s due to the significant photothermal effect of MXene, resulting in the partial Leidenfrost evaporation phenomenon and effectively reducing the contact area between the droplet of gold colloid and the surface. Analyte concentration factors obtained from the PIPLS SERS sensor were 5.1-fold and 30.3-fold higher than those attainable by conventional superhydrophobic and hydrophobic surfaces , respectively. Due to the significant enrichment capability, the PIPLS SERS sensor detected analytes down to the fM level with a high enhancement factor (5.1 × 10 11 ). Based on the principal component analysis method, the PIPLS SERS sensor effectively discriminated neonicotinoid insecticides (acetamiprid, clothianidin , imidacloprid , and thiamethoxam). The reliable detection of neonicotinoid insecticides in real samples, including apple, green tea, wheat, and corn, also demonstrates the applicability of the PIPLS SERS sensor for pesticide sensing in real-world settings.

Colorable photothermal-induced self-repairing anti-corrosion coating based on confined solid-liquid transition

Jiahong Wei,Ting Shen,Wenkai Cao,Long Jiang,Yu He,Weihua Li

Self-repairing coatings hold promise for prolonging the lifespan of steel structures and reducing carbon dioxide emissions from metal corrosion. Reversible chemistry-based intrinsic self-repairing has emerged as a cutting-edge strategy for addressing material damage. However, achieving effective repair at damaged coating interfaces remains challenging due to adhesion limitations between the coating and substrate. In this study, we propose an innovative approach to efficiently repair coating damage using photothermal-induced confined solid-liquid transition. We developed a unique structured coating by incorporating thermoplastic epoxy resin (EP) into a polyethersulfone (PES) network skeleton through controlled reaction-induced phase separation. Additionally, we synthesized visible-light transmittable copper sulfide (CuS) nanocrystals as photothermal fillers to impart PES/EP-CuS coating with colorability. Upon near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, the EP phase undergoes confined solid-liquid transition at the crack site, enabling it to flow through the PES skeleton and seal the crack. This process promotes contact between damaged interfaces and closes the crack through interfacial tension. The PES/EP-CuS coating exhibited exceptional anti-corrosion restoration during service, showcasing its robust self-repairing capability.
