The degradation of synthetic dye wastewater is important for green chemistry and cost-effectiveness. In this study, we developed Fe 3 O 4 @C-laccase (laccase immobilized on Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles) for photothermal degradation of high concentration of triphenylmethane dye wastewater. The Fe 3 O 4 @C-laccase possessed superior pH and thermal stabilities, as well as excellent tolerance to organic solvents, inhibitors, and metal ions. Laccase activity assays revealed that the activity recovery was approximately 118.2 %. Furthermore, the Fe 3 O 4 @C-laccase presented rapid and sustainable photothermal degradation capabilities to triphenylmethane dye wastewater. The initial removal efficiencies of 400 mg/L malachite green (MG), 400 mg/L brilliant green (BG), 100 mg/L crystal violet (CV), and 600 mg/L mixed dye (MG:BG:CV = 1:1:1) wastewater were approximately 99.8 %, 99.9 %, 96.4 % and 99.2 % by 60 min treatment, respectively. After undergoing 10 batches of reuse, the photothermal degradation efficiencies of the triphenylmethane dye wastewater remained consistently high, at about 99.3 %, 97.4 %, 94.0 %, and 95.1 %, respectively. The excellent photothermal degradation properties indicate that the Fe 3 O 4 @C-laccase holds promise for addressing high concentration of textile wastewater in various applications.

Antibiotic wastewater has caused serious environmental pollution and is hard to utilize. Thus, it is urgent to develop a green and efficient technology for treating antibiotic wastewater and effective utilization. The reported fuel cell technologies can degrade antibiotics and generate electricity simultaneously, but their cell performance is very bad and difficult application. Herein, we reported a new environment-friendly and low-cost redox flow fuel cell (RFFC) based on the photothermal synergistic effect to convert antibiotic wastewater into electricity directly and efficiently at low temperature. The developed RFFC can output the maximum power density of 98.2 mW cm −2 which is 545 times of the reported microbial fuel cells and 270 times of the reported photocatalytic fuel cells. And the photothermal degradation method is better than the thermal degradation and photo degradation . Furthermore, it can discharge stably >2.5 h at high current density of 2 A cm −2 and successfully power a small electrical fan (1.5 V). The reaction mechanism is studied by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation, and the results show that FeCl 3 molecules as photocatalyst and electron carriers of the RFFC can complex with antibiotics to greatly reduce the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO of antibiotics, which make the antibiotic molecules easy to be excited to unstable excited state by visible and UV light (λ < 733 nm) and greatly beneficial for their photothermal degradation. Besides, when using cefuroxime sodium wastewater as the model wastewater, HS-GC–MS results show that cefuroxime sodium can be completely degraded into non-toxic micro molecules after generating electricity. This work shows promising potential application for high-value utilization of antibiotic wastewater and generating clean electricity.

The photothermal process exhibits the largest energy conversion efficiency among all solar energy utilization processes. In this study, a core–shell CoTiO 3 @MnO 2 (CTM) composite photothermal catalyst was synthesized by supporting MnO 2 on CoTiO 3 by hydrothermal synthesis. Binding to peroxymonosulfate (PMS) heterogeneous catalyst removed tetracycline in wastewater. The new catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, UV–Vis, XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, and so on. Kinetic analysis showed that CTM activated PMS at a rate of 3.2 and 3.5 times higher than that of pure light and heat conditions, with complete degradation of tetracycline (TC). Since the outer MnO 2 layer converted the absorbed solar energy into thermal energy, PMS was activated to generate active species while performing electron transfer, which resulted in a considerably improved catalytic efficiency. To prove the wide applicability of the catalyst, other pollutants were degraded, including bisphenol A (BPA), metronidazole (MNZ), and methyl orange (MO). The three pollutants were degraded within 40 min. Finally, our findings demonstrated the mechanism of the photothermal degradation process and provided a novel approach for environmental remediation using renewable solar energy.
Graphical Abstract In this paper, the degradation efficiency of CoTiO 3 was improved by loading MnO 2 on CoTiO 3 . Binding to peroxymonosulfate (PMS) heterogeneous catalyst activation for the catalytic degradation of tetracycline. It was found by experiments that the core-shell structure of the composite material CoTiO 3 @MnO 2 had better photothermal catalysis efficiency than photocatalysis and thermal catalysis.

The main purpose of this study was to prepare zein-chondroitin sulfate (ZC) nanocomplex by anti-solvent co-precipitation, and to encapsulate, protect and controlled-release curcumin. As the proportion of chondroitin sulfate (CS) increased, the particle size, turbidity and zeta-potential of the ZC nanocomplexes all increased. When the mass ratio of zein and CS was 10:3, the ZC nanocomplex had small particle size (129 nm) and low polydispersity index (0.3). According to FTIR, FS, CD and XRD results, zein and CS were tightly bound by electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonding. The ZC nanocomplex was designed to encapsulate curcumin with high encapsulation efficiency (94.7%) and loading capacity (3.8%), and also enhanced the resistance of curcumin to light and thermal degradation by 2.9 and 2.4 times. It also exhibited controlled release capability during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. These results suggested the ZC nanocomplex is a good delivery vehicle to facilitate the application of curcumin.
