Superhydrophobic MXene Coating with Biomimetic Structure for Self-Healing Photothermal Deicing and Photoelectric Detector

Lun Zhang,Huiyuan Zhang,Xiangtian Yu,Liqiang Xu,Dong Wang,Xingyuan Lu,Aimin Zhang

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (Ti3C2Tx MXene) have emerged as new candidates for applications in multifunctional devices owing to their outstanding performance. However, these electronic devices are easily disturbed by water, breakage, oxidation during use, and limited energy resources. To solve these problems, herein, inspired by nature, a novel superhydrophobic, healable photothermal deicing and photodetector (SHPP) with a “papillary structure” is successfully fabricated for the first time, by a simple layer-by-layer assembly spraying process with 0D/1D/2D nanomaterials. As a result, the superhydrophobic modified 2D MXene coating (FM coating) on the SHPP sensor exhibits outstanding self-cleaning, long-term durability (>20 days), as well as excellent photothermal deicing performances under near-infrared light. Meanwhile, the unique semiembedded nano-ZnO/1D silver nanowire supports the sensor with desirable photoelectric performance with UV light and a fast response time (∼1 s), and good cycle stability. Moreover, benefiting from the transparent self-healing substrate, the photothermal deicing and photodetector properties can be restored at room temperature. The bioinspired structures and function mechanisms offer SHPP sensors great potential for the utilization of clean light energy, sensing, self-cleaning, anti-icing, and so forth.

Robust and breathable electronic textiles with anti-icing and photothermal de-icing properties modified by ZIF-8/polypyrrole

Hua-Bin Yuan,Lan Wei,Jiapeng Wang,Manman Zhao,Guoqiang Chen,Tieling Xing,Zhong Chen

Textile-based flexible sensors with passive anti-icing, active de-icing capabilities, and information transmission are of significant value, especially in low-temperature environments. This study introduced a hierarchically structured textile (PPTZC) composed of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), tannic acid (TA), polypyrrole, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modified cotton fabric. The innovative design of introducing ZIF-8, followed by etching it with TA to form a hollow structure, enhanced the wearability (breathability, flexibility, lightness, stability, and UV-blocking performance) of the cotton fabric and improved its sensing sensitivity. PPTZC exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning, anti-icing, photothermal de-icing, and information transmission capabilities. With a light absorbance of 90–95 %, it can rapidly melt ice through photothermal conversion. In a − 20°C environment, the surface temperature of PPTZC can quickly rise from − 20°C to approximately 25°C under 1 sun of irradiation. Both experimental results and COMSOL simulations demonstrated the remarkable anti-icing performance of PPTZC, with the longest ice delay time of 1291.4 s. Additionally, PPTZC can monitor head movements, finger bending, breathing, and pulse in real time, and be used for underwater information transmission and distress alerts. The multifunctional characteristics of PPTZC make it highly promising for use in low-temperature and underwater protective clothing, making it suitable for exploration and research in cold environments.

Superhydrophobic coatings on iodine doped substrate with photothermal deicing and passive anti-icing properties

Jinhuan Hu,Guo Jiang

Passive anti-icing and active deicing have been combined to improve the anti-icing performance of substrate surface in recent years. Some researchers have prepared active deicing coatings by inducing particles with photothermal or magnetic thermal properties. However, the thermogenesis of these coatings can weaken due to loss of particles. In this work, we first take advantage of the photothermal properties of iodine in deicing process, using polymer substrate doped with iodine by heating to endow the substrate with a photothermal property. Superhydrophobic SiO 2 /SiC coatings with passive anti-icing properties were fabricated on the iodine-doped substrate by a simple spray coating method. The prepared surface of samples can warm up to melt the ice under the irradiation of near infrared light and possesses excellent water repellency with a contact angle up to 162°. The results of 3D profile and microstructure observed via scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that the coatings combined with microscale SiC and nanoscale SiO 2 form voids that can capture air pockets. The photothermal effect of substrate-iodine was demonstrated as the surface temperature of the coatings rapidly increased to about 200 °C upon 10 s of irradiation. The concept of harnessing the iodine doping substrate to achieve superior photothermal performances in deicing might shed new light on the development of anti-icing materials for various applications.

Study of SiO2 aerogel/CNTs photothermal de-icing coating for wind turbine blades

He Jianjun,Yan Jingyi,Pu Min,Jie Jun,Luo Guangwu,Zeng Zijing,Duan Zihao,Huang Caiyuan

Ice on the surface of wind turbine blades may result in power production losses and unsafe operations. An effective technological solution to the ice issue is coating de-icing. This study first constructed SiO 2 aerogel/CNTs (carbon nanotube) coating with photothermal de-icing by incorporating photothermal nanoparticles into the created nanoporous structure. The coating structure examined by SEM and EDS analysis demonstrates that CNT particles can be well captured by the three-dimensional nanostructure of SiO 2 aerogel and form a stable symbiotic skeleton. After that, we examined how the quantity of CNT doping affected the coating's surface morphology and photothermal properties. The findings demonstrated that the C-6 coating made from 0.6% CNTs performed best. Utilizing the photothermal effect of CNTs, it exhibited a steady rate of temperature increase and reached the target temperature of 153.4°C in 561 s upon near-infrared light (808 nm) irradiation. According to the results of experiments testing the photothermal performance, mechanical/chemical stability, and applicability of the coating, the coating has the advantages of being lightweight, provides quick de-icing, high stability, and simple production. This study not only increases the viability of using coating de-icing technology on wind turbine blades but also offers creative solutions to scientific investigation in the area of coating de-icing.

Multifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene-Based Composite Coatings with Superhydrophobic Anti-icing and Photothermal Deicing Properties

Yushun Zhao,Cheng Yan,Tianqi Hou,Hongli Dou,Hao Shen

Although advances in industrial products have brought convenience to our lives, severe weather has increased the safety risks to industrial facilities. Considerable efforts have been made to develop high-performance superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings. Nevertheless, designing a functional coating with both anti-icing properties and self-deicing remains a major challenge. Here, we propose a design strategy to exploit a photothermal superhydrophobic multifunctional coating with excellent anti-icing and deicing properties based on MXene by high-temperature sintering and layer-by-layer coating. Specifically, poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) particles provide low surface energy and binding effects. Room-temperature-vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) enhances the dispersion of the composite particles and the adhesion of the functional coating to a glass substrate. Furthermore, the functional coatings constructed with MXene exhibit outstanding photothermal effects, imparting excellent superhydrophobicity (CA = 160.18°, SA = 1.8°) and efficient photothermal conversion (equilibrium temperature of 109.3 °C). An anti-icing/deicing test is simulated to confirm their efficient anti-icing/deicing performance in practical applications. Overall, the functional coatings designed in this work can be applied in real industrial facilities.

Facile fabrication of durable and breathable superhydrophobic cotton fabric for self-cleaning, UV-blocking, anti-icing, and photothermal de-icing

Yuan Hua-Bin,Zhao Manman,Zhu Xiaowei,Sha Desheng,Chen Guoqiang,Xing Tieling

Numerous techniques for achieving superhydrophobic modification of cotton fabrics are documented in existing literature. However, pursuing multifunctionality, especially concerning textile performance, remains a topic of significant research interest. This study introduced a straightforward yet highly effective method for producing modified cotton fabric (SFC) exhibiting a vibrant orange-yellow coloration, along with exceptional self-cleaning, stain-resistant, UV-blocking, anti-icing, and photothermal de-icing properties, through the utilization of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The surface of the SFC was evenly coated with small nanoparticles, identified by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) as β-FeOOH. The SFC displayed a water contact angle of 165.9° and a sliding angle of 2°, demonstrating outstanding superhydrophobicity. In addition, the SFC achieved a UPF value of 80, indicating exceptional UV-blocking capabilities. Additionally, the SFC exhibited remarkable stability when subjected to harsh conditions, including exposure to strong acid (pH = 1) and alkali (pH = 13), various chemical reagents, 600 min of water washing, and 30 cycles of abrasion testing. The approach proposed in this study offers the advantages of cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and fluorine-free characteristics, and is applicable across a range of fabrics, and has certain practical utility. Anticorrosive and anti-icing/deicing behavior of epoxy composite coatings reinforced with GO-PPy@SiO2 photothermal fillers

Ting Shu,Yuliang Zhang,Yanhui Cao,Fei Wang,Bochen Jiang,Yanhua Lei,Lihua Dong,Xiaobo Chen

In polar environments, the presence of ice on the surfaces of ships and instruments can lead to equipment failure, an unstable center of gravity, and pose hazards to operators. To mitigate the damage caused by both icing and corrosion, this paper aims to investigate a corrosion-resistant photothermal deicing coating material. The coating matrix utilizes a low-viscosity epoxy resin system, while the additives include polypyrrole (PPy) with excellent photothermal conversion capability and corrosion resistance, along with graphene oxide (GO)-modified nano-silica. By carefully controlling the ratio, a composite coating is formulated with both anti-corrosion and photothermal deicing abilities under light conditions. The results demonstrate that under simulated sunlight irradiation, the surface temperature of the coating at different proportions can rise to over 80 ℃ within 10 min, with the highest temperature reaching 84.9 ℃. The optimal proportion of the coating remains unfrozen at -15 ℃, exhibiting an icing delay time of 710 s, and the frozen droplets melt within 5 s. Additionally, the coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, contributing to a more effective protection of metal surfaces. Therefore, this type of photothermal anticorrosive coating holds significant potential for widespread application in polar environments.

The composite coating holds its prominent water repellency even after various extreme treatments, including high-low temperature alternation, 60 m sandpaper abrasion, kneading stability and corrosive medium immersion. Moreover, the coating also presents remarkable self-cleaning properties both in air or oil even after mechanical abrasion and significantly healable capabilities against O 2 plasma etching . Furthermore, the influence mechanism of the heterogeneous hybridization on thermal property and corrosion resistance of the coating were systematically analyzed. In addition, utilizing the superior water repellence and the photo-thermal performance, the coating could efficiently delay the freezing time and active deicing after 808 nm NIR laser irradiate. Therefore, the multifunctional integrated super-hydrophobic coating will be promising for several industrial fields.

Xiaohu Liu,Huamin Liu,Yi Li,Fei Teng,Ce Liang

Superhydrophobic surfaces have gained significant popularity in industrial production due to their unique structure resembling lotus leaves. Achieving the mechanical stability of superhydrophobic surfaces and improving the self-cleaning and deicing effects have attracted critical research focus. This study incorporated a hybrid composite of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 ) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTS), denoted as TiO 2 -MWCNTS, into an epoxy resin matrix. The hybrid composite was spray-coated onto the substrate and cured, resulting in a superhydrophobic surface with excellent wear resistance and deicing performance. By adjusting the mass ratio of TiO 2 and MWCNTS, it was found that a 3:1 ratio exhibited a contact angle (WCA) of 159.8° ± 0.5°. Incorporating the TiO 2 -MWCNTS hybrid structure not only significantly improved the mechanical durability of the coating surface but also harnessed the outstanding photothermal conversion ability of carbon nanotubes, imparting excellent deicing capability to the coated surface. Therefore, this superhydrophobic surface holds great practical value for outdoor applications.

Waxberry-liked micro-nanostructured, superhydrophobic surfaces with enhanced photothermal de-icing and passive anti-icing properties

Siyu Liu,Zhongzheng Zhu,Qitan Zheng,Kaifeng Wang,Feng Zhou,Qiuming Yang,Xinyi Wang,Lu Ye,Yujie Chen,Hezhou Liu,Hua Li

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs), as one of the most promising passive anti-icing materials, suffer from unavoidable icing under high-humidity cool environment. Photothermal de-icing capability with robust light absorption feature is thereby necessitated to integrate into SHSs to ensure maximum icephobic performance. Herein, a facile strategy of using polyurethane and synthesized waxberry-liked Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (WCNPs) to construct hierarchical micro-nanostructured composites exhibiting superhydrophobic, photothermal and “light-trapping” properties is proposed. WCNPs self-assemble from nanoscale spheres, inherently possessing a hierarchical micro-nano structure. Sophisticated surface structure created by abundant WCNPs with unique intrinsic hierarchical morphology provides the composites with both excellent water repellency and impressive “light-trapping” capability of 92.7 % light absorptivity. Besides, WCNPs are covered by self-polymerized tannic acid layer interconnected with octadecylamine, which further facilitates the hydrophobic properties. In high-humidity (95 %) environments at −10 ℃, ice delay time can be enhanced to 802 s, while the melting time under 1 sun irradiation for ice crystal and layer are only 156 s and 370 s, respectively. Furthermore, reliabilities of the coating are verified by comprehensive durability assessments, including wear resistance, adhesion and icing/deicing cycle tests. This study constructs a surface micro-nano layer structure to absorb the abundant solar energy in nature and transform it into heat, providing a promising solution in anti-icing and de-icing fields.

3D Printable Plasmonic Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles Enhanced Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composite for Photothermal Deicing and Infrared Imaging

Siyu Lu,Jixiang Zhang,Min Xi,Nian Li,Zhenyang Wang

Plasmonic semiconductors enable a highly efficient light-to-heat conversion process, outperforming noble metals in terms of stability, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility. In this study, a composite 3D printing filament (T-TPU), composed of titanium nitride (TiN) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), was synthesized by using a combined extrusion process involving a twin-screw extruder and a single-screw extruder. The resulting T-TPU filament could be used with fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing to produce custom-designed patterns for various photothermal applications. Notably, these printed patterns showed significant improvement in thermal properties, with over 100% enhancement in thermal conductivity, 13% increase in heat capacity, and 40% increase in density leading to superior photothermal performance and potential applications in photothermal deicing and infrared imaging. Additionally, the wavelength-dependent plasmonic and photothermal responses of the printed patterns were experimentally investigated and supported by finite elemental method (FEM) simulations, revealing a temperature increase of approximately 2.5 °C under IR LED light when compared to commercial black thermoplastic polyurethane (C-TPU), which was more obvious than a difference less than 1 °C under UV or visible LED light sources. Finally, the mechanical properties of T-TPU, altered by the inclusion of TiN nanoparticles, were assessed, showing a slight enhancement in modulus (over 30% enhancement) and friction coefficient (∼5% smoother) relative to neat TPU (N-TPU). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicated that the TiN nanoparticles promoted strong interactions between polymer chains and TiN particles, enhancing the modulus of elasticity and contributing to the improved mechanical properties of T-TPU. These findings suggest improved abrasion resistance, demonstrating the stability and durability of the composite material.

Solar-heating superhydrophobic sponge based on size-controllable polydopamine nanoparticles for fast crude oil recovery and photothermal deicing

Yuanlong Wu,Lei Dong,Xin Shu,Youfa Zhang,Qianping Ran

In the wake of recurring oil spills causing devastating environmental and ecological damage, there is an urgent need for efficient oil spill remediation strategies. Conventional absorbents are often ineffective in harsh environments and struggle with the recovery of high-viscosity crude oil at room temperature. Although photothermal absorbents can greatly improve the fluidity of crude oil, their practical applications are still limited due to complicated preparation processes, hazardous fluorinated reagents, and secondary pollution. This study introduces a facile, one-step dip-coating method to develop a photothermal superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS), incorporating a fluorine-free suspension of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), siloxane-containing acrylate copolymers (SAC), and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs). The resulting PDMS/SAC-PDA@MS shows an exceptional water contact angle (WCA) and significant self-cleaning abilities due to its superhydrophobicity. With superior mechanical and chemical durability, the sponge achieves remarkable oil absorption (up to 102.6 times its weight) and efficient oil/water separation. Crucially, under solar irradiation, the sponge’s surface temperature reaches 87.6 °C, effectively reducing oil viscosity and enabling rapid cleanup of oil spills and active deicing. This study presents a green, economical approach to synthesizing photothermal superhydrophobic adsorbents with potential applications in environmental cleanup and active deicing.
