Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is dangerous and can cause serious skin diseases if skin is excessively exposed to it. Thus, it is highly desirable for human health to monitor the UV radiation intensity. In this report, a flexible and stretchable dual-response UV radiation detector is reported by integrating UV-responsive color-switchable WO3 quantum dots (QDs) with an electrical hydrogel. With the radiation intensity of UV increasing from 0.5 to 10 mW/cm2, the color of the hydrogel switched to dark blue gradually due to the excellent photochromic property of WO3 QDs to UV radiation. Furthermore, a linear relationship can be established between color difference and UV radiation intensity. Hence, the color difference of the hydrogel under solar UV irradiation can be used to estimate the solar UV radiation intensity in daily life. In addition, when the UV radiation intensity is greater than 10 mW/cm2, the photochromic hydrogel converts the colorimetric response into the electrical resistance change. Thus, due to its excellent photochromic and electrical resistance response properties for UV irradiation, the prepared hydrogel provides an idea for developing novel detection instruments.

Inverse photoconductance is an uncommon phenomenon observed in selective low-dimensional materials, in which the electrical conductivity of the materials decreases under light illumination. The unique material property holds great promise for biomedical applications in photodetectors, photoelectric logic gates, and low-power nonvolatile memory, which remains a daunting challenge. Especially, tunable photoconductivity for biocompatible materials is highly desired for interfacing with biological systems but is less explored in organic materials. Here, we report nanofibers self-assembled with cyclo-tyrosine-tyrosine (cyclo-YY) having voltage-regulated inverse photoconductance and photoconductance. The peptide nanofibers can be switched back and forth by a bias voltage for imitating biological sensing in artificial vision and memory devices. A peptide optoelectronic resistive random access memory (PORRAM) device has also been fabricated using the nanofibers that can be electrically switched between long-term and short-term memory. The underlying mechanism of the reversible photoconductance is discussed in this paper. Due to the inherent biocompatibility of peptide materials, the reversible photoconductive nanofibers may have broad applications in sensing and storage for biotic and abiotic interfaces.

Using simple and commonly available devices for signal reading has attracted much attention recently for DNA-based sensors. Most previous works focused on electrochemical or colorimetric signals. In this work, a portable device was structured by simple electronic and 3D-printed components to convert fluorescence signal to electric resistance with reading by a multimeter. To demonstrate its application, we took advantage of the slow ligand bind kinetics of Cr 3+ to promote DNA adsorption on metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs). Nanoceria (CeO 2 ), screened from a total of 13 kinds of MONPs, possesses high specificity for Cr 3+ from other metal ions. EDTA can mask other metal ions, while it cannot bind Cr 3+ quickly so that Cr 3+ promotes DNA adsorption and thus fluorescence quenching. The linear range is from 0 to 2 μM Cr 3+ with a LOD of 0.02 μM. Using common electronic components and the 3D-printed miniaturized device, the sensor to transfer fluorescence to electric resistant signal was also measured by a digital multimeter. In this case, the LOD is about 1 μM Cr 3+ . Such a strategy may provide a simple and general approach for fluorescent portable device fabrication and may find applications for other onsite sensing applications.

Real-time quantitative detection of ultraviolet (UV) radiation dose is vitally important in life and industry. Herein, we report a novel system for real-time quantitative detection and monitoring of UV radiation dose based on photochromic hydrogel and photo-resistance. The UV radiation probe is composed of a UV-responsive poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate hydrogel that rapidly and significantly changes color responding to UV radiation dose, a red filter that instantaneously amplifies the UV-radiation-induced color change signal, and a photo-resistance that instantaneously transforms the color change signal into electric resistance signal. Based on the quantitative relationship between electric resistance and UV radiation dose, real-time quantitative detection of UV radiation dose can be effectively achieved. By further combining the UV radiation probe with a specially designed printed circuit board (PCB), real-time monitoring of UV radiation dose with automatic alarm system is demonstrated for warning and terminating of excessive UV radiation. Such an efficient real-time quantitative detection system for UV radiation dose is highly promising in various applications, such as dermatological treatment, industrial production, and photocatalytic sterilization with UV rays. Furthermore, the proposed strategy provides a universal method to develop novel photodetectors using other photochromic materials and may inspire novel detection and monitoring instruments.
