Abstract The magnetic properties of the magnetic transparent composite films largely depend on the content of Fe 3 O 4 employed. However, higher addition of Fe 3 O 4 into the matrix will lead to Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles agglomeration resulting in the reduction in the transparency of the composite films. The contradiction between Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle content and transparency limits the application of transparent magnetic films. In this work, the spherical bamboo nanocellulose (SBN) with an average size of 61 nm was prepared from bamboo powder by NaOH/Urea/Thiourea aqueous system, which was an effective, inexpensive and less toxic strategy. The basic structure of SBN was investigated. The SBN exhibited the cellulose II type crystal structure. The molecular chain length of SBN were lower than before dissolution. The magnetic SBN/Fe 3 O 4 composite films with light penetration were prepared. The results revealed that the dispersion of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles in the SBN/Fe 3 O 4 composite films was much better than that in nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC)/Fe 3 O 4 composite films because of the abundant hydrogen bonds between Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and SBN. The transparent results indicated the highest transmittance of the films was 94% in the wavelength range of visible light, which was almost 23.7% higher than that of NFC/Fe 3 O 4 composite films with the same amount of Fe 3 O 4 addition (15 wt%). The findings in this study also revealed that the SBN in the SBN/Fe 3 O 4 composite films was distributed in layers. The saturation magnetization of the SBN/Fe 3 O 4 composite films was 10.65 emu g −1 with 15 wt% Fe 3 O 4 incorporated, which guaranteed the excellent magnetic properties. Graphic abstract

The penetration ability of visible light (<2 mm) and near-infrared (NIR) light (∼1 cm) remarkably impairs the therapeutic efficacy and clinical applications of photodynamic therapy (PDT). To address the limitation of light penetration depth, a novel self-luminescent bacterium, teLuc.FP-EcN, has been engineered through transfection of a fusion expression plasmid containing the luciferase gene teLuc and bright red fluorescent protein mScarlet-I into Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN). The engineered teLuc.FP-EcN can specifically target and colonize tumors without significant toxicity to the host. Acting as a continuous internal light source, teLuc.FP-EcN can activate the photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and then effectively destroy tumor tissue from the inside. As a result, a significant reduction in tumor proliferation and extension of the overall survival in mouse tumor models has been observed. Furthermore, teLuc.FP-EcN-boosted PDT amplified its therapeutic effect by activating antitumor immune response, including the conversion of M2 macrophages into pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages, as well as an increase in the proportion of CD3+ T cells and a decrease in T-cell exhaustion. In conclusion, teLuc.FP-EcN can be used as an implantable light source for tumor phototherapy, which simultaneously possesses ROS generation and immune regulation.

The vat photopolymerization (VPP) technology offers exceptional flexibility in design and manufaction of high-performance piezoceramic structures. However, due to the high refractive index and strong UV absorption characteristics of Pb-based ceramics, ceramic slurries are required to have a low solid content in for efficient deep-curing. This limitation often results in sintering distortion, cracking, low density, and deteriorated piezoelectric properties. To address these challenges, a heat treatment process was initially employed to spheroidize the PZT powder, which effectively decreased light scattering and absorption. Subsequently, high-refractive-index and highly reactive photosensitive resins were introduced to enhance the penetration of UV light and reduce the critical exposure energy of the slurry. Additionally, a hindered amine light stabilizer is added to capture the peroxy radicals to overcome the oxygen inhibition effect and further increase the curing depth. As a result, a PZT slurry with a high solid content of 45 vol.%, was successfully formulated, facilitating the manufacturing of PZT ceramics with complex structures. The sintered samples achieved a high relative density of 96.5% and a d 33 value of 573 pC/N. These optimized strategies provide a solid foundation for the development of high-performance PZT devices with intricate geometries.

Upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) as a new class of imaging agent is gaining prominence because of its unique optical properties. An ideal UCNP for bioimaging should simultaneously possess fine water dispersibility and favorable functional groups. In this paper, we present a simple but effective method to the synthesis of a UCNP-based nanohybrid bearing a multihydroxy hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) shell by the combination of a “grafting from” strategy with a ring-opening polymerization technique. The structure and morphology of the resulting UCNP-g-HPG nanohybrid were characterized in detail by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy measurements. The results reveal that the amount of grafted HPG associated with the thickness of the HPG shell can be well tuned. UCNP-g-HPG shows high water dispersibility and strong and stable upconversion luminescence. On the basis of its numerous surface hydroxyl groups, UCNP-g-HPG can be tailored by a representative fluorescent dye rhodamine B to afford a UCNP-g-HPG-RB nanohybrid that simultaneously presents upconversion and downconversion luminescence. Preliminary biological studies demonstrate that UCNP-g-HPG shows low cytotoxicity, high luminescent contrast, and deep light penetration depth, posing promising potential for bioimaging applications.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an emerging tumor treatment; however, it is hindered by insufficient endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and high glutathione (GSH) concentrations in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Furthermore, CDT has limited therapeutic efficacy as a monotherapy. To overcome these limitations, in this study, a nanoplatform is designed and constructed from Cu-doped mesoporous Prussian blue (CMPB)-encapsulated glucose oxidase (GOx) with a coating of hyaluronic acid (HA) modified with a nitric oxide donor (HN). In the proposed GOx@CMPB-HN nanoparticles, the dopant Cu2+ ions are crucial to combining and mutually promoting multiple therapeutic approaches, namely, CDT, photothermal therapy (PTT), and starvation therapy. The dopant Cu2+ ions in CMPB protect against reactive oxygen species to deplete the intracellular GSH in the TME. Additionally, the byproduct Cu+ ions act as a substrate for a Fenton-like reaction that activates CDT. Moreover, H2O2, which is another important substrate, is produced in large quantities through intracellular glucose depletion caused by the nanoparticle-loaded GOx, and the gluconic acid produced in this reaction further enhances the TME acidity and creates a better catalytic environment for CDT. In addition, Cu2+ doping greatly improves the mesoporous Prussian blue (MPB) photothermal conversion performance, and the resultant increase in temperature accelerates CDT catalysis. Finally, the HN coating enables the nanoparticles to actively target CD44 receptors in cancer cells and also enhances vascular permeability. Therefore, this coating has multiple effects, such as facilitating enhanced permeability and retention and deep laser penetration. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that the proposed GOx@CMPB-HN nanoplatform significantly inhibits tumor growth with the help of in situ enhanced synergistic therapies based on the properties of the TME. The developed nanoplatform has the potential to be applied to cancer treatment and introduces new avenues for tumor treatment research.
