Doxorubicin (DOX) has been extensively used in cancer chemotherapy as an antibiotic drug, but when DOX concentration exceeds the threshold value, irreversible liver toxicity and cardiotoxicity can be triggered. Therefore, it is a significant theme to detect DOX concentration of patient blood and metabolites for the optimization of drug dosage. Linear correlation between fluorescence quenching of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) and DOX concentration enables SiNPs to present good prospect to address this tricky issue. Inspired by these aspects, we put forward a novel method to synthesize dragonfruit-based SiNPs (DSiNPs) at room temperature, and leverage them in the fiber-optic sensing of urine DOX. Firstly, we investigate a simple and green synthesis method of DSiNPs emitting blue-green fluorescence through a one-step redox reaction at room temperature with organosilane as silicon source and fresh dragonfruit juice as reducing agent. Secondly, depending on optical characterization, we demonstrate mechanism of DSiNPs in the detection of DOX. Thirdly, a fiber-optic sensor is used to measure the fluorescence intensity of DSiNPs under diverse salt concentrations, pH values, and illumination time to explore the tolerance of DSiNPs. Fourthly, based on optimization of parameters and validation of specificity, we acquire linear response range of this method to DOX from 0 to 50 μM with detection limit of 3 μM. Finally, this method is leveraged in the detection of urine DOX, and obtained the recovery rates of 92.30 % and 107.30 %. This method holds excellent potential in the clinical analysis of anti-tumor drugs for the advantages of environmental friendliness and simple operation.

Semiconductor metal oxides with narrow bandgap have emerged as a promising platform for photoelectrochemical reactions, yet their photoelectron-induced photocorrosion effect has been a limitation for their wider applications. Understanding the conversion processes concomitant with photoelectrochemical reaction at the electrode–electrolyte interface plays a crucial role in revealing the corrosion mechanisms and advancing the development of efficient photocathodes. However, accurately and in situ tracking these dynamic chemical events remains a great challenge due to the fact that reaction processes occur at nanoscale interfaces. Here, we track the electrochemical growth and conversion of copper nanostructures at interface by the evanescent field of the surface plasmon wave by using a gold-coated optical fiber as an electrochemical electrode and light sensing probe. The results exhibit correlation between redox processes of copper species and plasmonic resonances. Furthermore, in situ fiber-optic detection reveals the photocorrosion dynamics under photoelectrochemical reaction, including photoelectron-induced self-reduction of copper oxide and self-oxidation of cuprous oxide. These demonstrations facilitate not only the diagnosis for the health condition of photocathode nanomaterial, but also the understanding of the underlying reaction mechanism, and thus are potentially crucial for advancing the development of highly efficient photocathodes in future energy applications.

Early diagnosis of chronic heart failure (CHF) relies on the ultra-sensitive detection assay of its main biomarker, Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). To meet such demand, we designed a near-infrared immunoassay biosensor, utilizing a fiber-embedded microfluidic chip for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. A SERS probe, consisting of metal–organic framework and Au-HEPES coupling nanoparticles (AuHPs), was used to enhance the Raman signal of the toluidine blue (TB) dye. The probe anchored with TB is used as a SERS tag, which is linked to BNP through sandwich method. To enhance the Raman signal further, we embedded a SERS substrate at the bottom of the microfluidic channel, which serves an enhancer when the SERS tagged BNP passes through the microfluidic chip. The amplified Raman signal was collected by an optical fiber probe of a simple and portable Raman detection system with an all-fiber connected configuration. Such design resulted in the lowest detection limit of pg/mL, indicating that the proposed platform can be used for rapid and highly sensitive detection of BNP. In addition, our platform also has the advantages of low sample consumption and high throughput rate, providing an effective scheme for the early diagnosis of CHF.

This paper describes the simple and label-free detection of thrombin using optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors based on gold films prepared by the cost-effective method of electroless plating. The plating conditions for simultaneously obtaining gold film on cylindrical core and end surfaces of an optical fiber suitable for measurement were optimized. The fabricated sensor exhibited a linear refractive index sensitivity of 2150 nm/RIU and 7.136 (a.u.)/RIU in the refractive index of 1.3329–1.3605 interrogated by resonance wavelength and amplitude methods respectively and a single wavelength monitoring method was proposed to investigate the sensing performance of this sensor. Polyadenine diblock and thiolated thrombin aptamers were immobilized on gold nanoparticles and gold films respectively to implement a sandwich optical fiber assay for thrombin. The developed optical fiber SPR sensors were successfully used in the determination of thrombin down to 0.56 nM over a wide range from 2 to 100 nM and showed good selectivity for thrombin, which indicated their potential clinical applications for biomedical samples.
