Mechanisms for the enhanced photo-Fenton activity of ferrihydrite modified with BiVO4 at neutral pH

Tianyuan Xu,Runliang Zhu,Gangqiang Zhu,Jianxi Zhu,Xiaoliang Liang,Yanping Zhu,Hongping He

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts generally show very weak photo-Fenton activity at near-neutral pH because of the relatively low rate of Fe 2+ regeneration. The aim of this work is to develop novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts, which can accelerate the regeneration of Fe 2+ and thus have superior photo-Fenton activity at near-neutral pH. In this study, ferrihydrite (Fh) was modified with BiVO 4 to synthesize BiVO 4 /Fh composites, and we expected that the photogenerated electrons from BiVO 4 would accelerate the regeneration of Fe 2+ on Fh. Mechanistic investigation of H 2 O 2 consumption showed that the introduction of BiVO 4 promoted the decomposition of H 2 O 2 into reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, the presence of BiVO 4 deterred O 2 − production and accelerated the formation of OH, according to the results of ROS formation, as shown with EPR spectroscopy and fluorescent probes tools. Furthermore, the Fe 2+ concentration on the surface of BiVO 4 /Fh was higher than that on Fh based on the results of XPS characterization and quantitative measurement with a 1,10-phenanthroline spectrophotometric method. These results demonstrated that the introduction of BiVO 4 can accelerate the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ by transferring photogenerated electrons from BiVO 4 to Fe 3+ on the surface of Fh. Meanwhile, a higher decolorization efficiency of acid red 18 by BiVO 4 /Fh than by Fh and pure BiVO 4 verified that the introduction of BiVO 4 can significantly enhance the photo-Fenton catalytic activity of Fh even at near-neutral pH. Overall, our work has important implications for understanding the photo-Fenton mechanisms on semiconductor modified heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts and confirms that the introduction of a semiconductor can enhance the photo-Fenton catalytic activity of heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts in acidic and neutral pH.

Synthesis of novel CdSe QDs/BiFeO3 composite catalysts and its application for the photo-Fenton catalytic degradation of phenol

Tao Huang,Jundong Zhu,Shengzhuo Ge,Tianyu Guo,Chongwen Jiang,Le Xie

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction using BiFeO 3 as catalyst was considered as an efficient environmental remediation technique. However, its low catalytic performance limited its application. In this work, CdSe QDs with high electron mobility, small size effect and rich surface properties were loaded on BFO surface by stirring impregnation method. The photo-Fenton catalytic performance of catalysts under visible light irradiation was evaluated by the degradation of phenol. The results showed that the BFO with CdSe QDs uniformly distributed on the surface shows much better photo-Fenton degradation of phenol performance than that of pure BFO. Moreover, when the load content of CdSe QDs comes to 0.5 wt%, the degradation efficiency of phenol increased from 41.5% to 98.5% within 60 min. The results of photochemical experiments confirmed that composite catalyst had a good ability to separate photo-induced carriers and the experiments of free radicals trapping showed that the holes and OH radicals were important active substances. Based on the above research, the possible mechanism of photo-Fenton reaction of catalyst was expounded. Excellent photo-Fenton catalytic performance and superior stability make this material showing a good application prospect for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Fabrication of poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate hydrogel beads and its application in photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline

Du Zoufei,Liu Fei,Xiao Changfa,Dan Yi,Jiang Long

Developing a reusable and durable catalyst for heterogeneous photo-Fenton process is of great importance for the practical application in the environment remediation. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel beads were constructed using FeCl 3 and boric acid as cross-linking agents. Characterizations and tests were employed to investigate the structure, optical property and durability of the obtained beads. The photo-Fenton performance of the PVA/SA-FeCl 3 beads was evaluated by degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible-light irradiation. The results show that the constructed beads exhibit porous structure, display a broad absorption band in the visible region and behave excellent stability against mechanic effects. The photocatalytic experiment result indicates that the removal rate of TC reaches 90.5% under optimized conditions, while the removal rate of total organic carbon reaches 28.6%. By analyzing the degradation of TC after adding active species scavengers, a photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. Moreover, PVA/SA-6% FeCl 3 beads could be easily separated and recycled in water purification. This work provides a facile and robust method to construct reusable and durable Fe(III)-containing hydrogel beads with acceptable photo-Fenton catalytic performance under visible-light irradiation, paving the way for its practical application in wastewater treatment.

Construction of biochar modified multi-morphologies Fe2O3 for efficient boosting photo-Fenton organic antibiotic pollutants degradation: Mechanism and toxicity evaluation in degradation pathways

Guangyu Wu,Shiyu Bian,Jingyi Wang,Fan Wu,Wenting Sun,Yuwei Pan,Chunyu Zhao,Weinan Xing,Yudong Huang

Constructing advanced photo-Fenton catalyst provides an effective strategy to improve photogenerated charge separation for catalytic removal of organic contaminants, however it faces challenges in efficient morphology control and recovery methods. Biochar has become a promising material on account of its high efficiency and adjustable physicochemical properties. For the purpose of enhancing the economic applicability of biochar catalysts, a series of the biochar modified multi-morphologies Fe 2 O 3 photo-Fenton catalysts (Fe 2 O 3 /BC) were prepared for efficient removal tetracycline (TC) in this work. The obtained characterization results revealed that the adoption of biochar can avoid the agglomeration of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and obtained the Nanosheet-, Cube- and Ring-like photo-Fenton catalysts, respectively. The Nanosheet-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC displayed the highest TC removal of 97.0 % within 80 min, which the degradation rate constant was approximately 3 and 18 times those of Cube-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC and Ring-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC photo-Fenton catalysts. The photocurrent signal density was in the order of Nanosheet-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC>Cube-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC>Ring-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC, while the semicircle radius of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results in the order of Nanosheet-like Fe 2 O 3 /BC

Wood-converted porous carbon decorated with MIL-101(Fe) derivatives for promoting photo-Fenton degradation of ciprofloxacin

Li Kaiqian,Zhang Xupeng,Huang Xueqin,Li Xianghong,Chang Qiaowen,Wang Jing,Deng Shuduan,Zhu Gang

In response to the escalating concerns over antibiotics in aquatic environments, the photo-Fenton reaction has been spotlighted as a promising approach to address this issue. Herein, a novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst (Fe 3 O 4 /WPC) with magnetic recyclability was synthesized through a facile two-step process that included in situ growth and subsequent carbonization treatment. This catalyst was utilized to expedite the photocatalytic decomposition of ciprofloxacin (CIP) assisted by H 2 O 2 . Characterization results indicated the successful anchoring of MIL-101(Fe)-derived spindle-like Fe 3 O 4 particles in the multi-channeled wood-converted porous carbon (WPC) scaffold. The as-synthesized hybrid photocatalysts, boasting a substantial specific surface area of 414.90 m 2 ·g −1 and an excellent photocurrent density of 0.79 μA·cm −2 , demonstrated superior photo-Fenton activity, accomplishing approximately 100% degradation of CIP within 120 min of ultraviolet-light exposure. This can be attributed to the existence of a heterojunction between Fe 3 O 4 and WPC substrate that promotes the migration and enhances the efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Meanwhile, the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox circulation and mesoporous wood carbon in the catalyst synergistically enhance the utilization of H 2 O and accelerate the formation of •OH radicals, leading to heightened degradation efficiency of CIP. Experiments utilizing chemical trapping techniques have demonstrated that •OH radicals are instrumental in the CIP degradation process. Furthermore, the study on reusability indicated that the efficiency in removing CIP remained at 89.5% even through five successive cycles, indicating the structural stability and excellent recyclability of Fe 3 O 4 /WPC. This research presented a novel pathway for designing magnetically reusable MOFs/wood-derived composites as photo-Fenton catalysts for actual wastewater treatment.

Graphene oxide/Fe(III)-based metal-organic framework membrane for enhanced water purification based on synergistic separation and photo-Fenton processes

Atian Xie,Jiuyun Cui,Jin Yang,Yangyang Chen,Jihui Lang,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan,Jiangdong Dai

Herein, a graphene oxide/MIL-88A(Fe) (GO/M88A) membrane was prepared for the first time by a facile vacuum filtration method. The intercalation of photo-Fenton catalytic M88A into GO nanosheets can not only regulate 2D nanochannels, but also endow the membrane with photo-Fenton catalytic activity. Accordingly, the GO/M88A membrane showed an enhanced separation efficiency and flux (more than 6 times that of GO membrane) based on synergistic separation/photo-Fenton processes. Importantly, the GO/M88A membrane maintained high separation efficiency (97.87 %) and almost constant flux even after 12 cycles of MB separation. The GO/M88A membrane can also be used to treat real textile wastewaters. Moreover, the membrane was directly used as catalyst for photo-Fenton catalytic degradation of contaminants with high degradation efficiency for MB (98.81 %) and BPA (97.27 %). Therefore, the results indicate that this novel GO/M88A membrane has excellent separation performance, stability and photo-Fenton activity and can be used as a potential membrane for water purification and environmental protection applications.

Multiple interface coupling on natural tourmaline enables high-efficiency removal of antibiotic: Superior property and mechanism

Jingjing Cui,Xiangyu Liu,Feifan Qie,Chengzhe Xie,Qingdong He,Jian Liu,Steven L. Suib,Wenbo Wang

Reasonably designing highly active, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective catalysts for efficient elimination of pollutants from water is desirable but challenging. Herein, an efficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst tourmaline (TM)/tungsten oxide (WO 3-x ) (named TW10) containing tungsten/boron/iron (W/B/Fe) synergistic active centers and 90% of cheap natural tourmaline (TM) mineral rich in Fe and B elements. The TW10 catalyst can quickly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate massive active free radicals, which may induce the rapid and efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC). The TW10/PMS/Visible light system can effectively degrade up to 98.7% of tetracycline (TC) in actual waters (i.e. seawater, Yellow River, and Yangtze River water), and the catalytic degradation rates reach 1.65, 5.569, and 2.38 times higher than those of TM, WO 3-x , and commercial P25 (Degussa, Germany), respectively. In addition, the catalyst can be recycled and reused multiple times. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) analyses confirm that the synergistic catalytic effect of W/B/Fe sites on the TW10 catalyst accelerates the electron transfer between Fe(II) and Fe(III), as well as between W(V) and W(VI), and thus promotes the rapid degradation of TC. The catalytic reaction mechanism and degradation pathway of TC were explored. This work provides a feasible route for the design and development of new eco-friendly and efficient catalyst.

Efficiency LaFeO3 and BiOI heterojunction for the enhanced photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Zhou Cao,Yunpu Zhao,Zhaohui Zhou,Qizhao Wang,Qiong Mei,Hongfei Cheng

Long-term exposure to antibiotic may have adverse effects on human health including carcinogenesis or teratogenicity and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Developing effective catalysts to degrade antibiotic pollution is an urgent demand. Herein, a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst with enhanced tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation activity was developed by hydrothermally synthesizing lanthanum ferrite (LaFeO 3 ) and bismuth iodide oxide (BiOI). LaFeO 3 /BiOI showed excellent repeatability and stability, and still maintained an extremely high degradation efficiency of 80.6% after three cycles. The LaFeO 3 /BiOI with 35 wt% LaFeO 3 showed significantly enhanced degradation rate (93.6%) of TCH within 40 mins in the photo-Fenton system, compared with single photocatalytic degradation (41.2%) and Fenton degradation (83.1%). The parameter characterization and quenching experiments were carried out on the heterojunction . The possible degradation mechanisms of TCH were proposed. The results indicated that the existence of the built-in electric field in the heterojunction effectively promote the separation of photogenerated electrons and hole pairs. The photoelectrons activate H 2 O 2 to generate OH and accelerate Fe III /Fe II conversion. This work has developed a promising heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts, and stipulated some new insights for the removal of antibiotic pollutants.

Enhanced degradation of humic acid by Co3O4/NCDs/PVDF photo-Fenton catalytic system

Zhongsen Yan,Binbin Li,Guohui Liu,Zhenyu Lu,Haiqing Chang,Juxiang Jin,Wenxin Dai,Yao Qu,Fangshu Qu

Humic acid (HA), a widely prevalent natural organic matter in aquatic environments, poses serious health risks due to its potential to form carcinogenic by-products during water treatment. While the photo-Fenton process can be employed for HA degradation, its effectiveness is often hindered by the poor catalytic performance of conventional catalysts. In this study, Co 3 O 4 was modified with nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) and immobilized on a PVDF membrane. Compared with Co 3 O 4 /PVDF, Co 3 O 4 /NCDs/PVDF system achieved 85.1 % HA removal and 66 % mineralization within 60 min through photocatalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation as well as showed excellent stability in cycle experiments. The incorporation of NCDs enhanced the synergistic effect between light and PMS, improved light absorption due to the narrowed bandgap of Co 3 O 4 /NCDs/PVDF, and played a significant role in generating the primary reactive species, 1 O 2 . Additionally, Co 3 O 4 /NCDs/PVDF effectively controlled Co ions leaching. Finally, the degradation intermediates were identified, and the degradation pathways were proposed. The photo-Fenton degradation of HA preferentially broke unsaturated bonds and degraded aromatic ring compounds. The Co 3 O 4 /NCDs/PVDF photo-Fenton catalytic system serves as an effective approach for boosting the efficiency of photo-Fenton degradation.

Porous g-C3N4 and α-FeOOH bridged by carbon dots as synergetic visible-light-driven photo-fenton catalysts for contaminated water remediation

Xiaocui Wu,Qingshan Zhao,Fang Guo,Guangsen Xia,Xiaojie Tan,Huiyuan Lv,Zhaoxuan Feng,Wenting Wu,Jingtang Zheng,Mingbo Wu

Merging photocatalysis with Fenton-like reaction provides a promising synergetic advanced oxidation technology for water treatment, whereas the rational design of efficient cooperative photo-Fenton system still remains a great challenge. In this study, a ternary α-FeOOH/carbon dots/porous g-C 3 N 4 (α-FeOOH/CDs/p-GCN) composite is developed as visible-light-driven heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for contaminated water remediation. α-FeOOH nanorods are in-situ grown on porous g-C 3 N 4 substrates, among which CDs are intercalated as high-speed electron transmission bridges, simultaneously preventing the photogenerated electron-hole recombination and accelerating the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle. The distinctive heterostructure and synergetic catalytic effect endow α-FeOOH/CDs/p-GCN with superior efficiency, reusability , and universality for recalcitrant pollutant elimination, the reaction rate of which is nearly 13.6, 7.3, 3.4, 1.4, and 5.1 times higher than that of α-FeOOH, bulk g-C 3 N 4 (b-GCN), p-GCN, α-FeOOH/p-GCN, and α-FeOOH/CDs/b-GCN, respectively. The FeOOH/CDs/p-GCN also demonstrates excellent tolerance to realistic environmental matrices including deionized water, sea water, river water, wastewater, and underground water. HO• and •O 2 − radicals are proved to be the predominant contributors in the photo-Fenton system. This work provides an efficient synergetic visible-light-driven photo-Fenton catalyst possessing great potential for practical contaminated water remediation.

A facile synthesis of PEGylated Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2 nanocomposite as efficient photo−Fenton−like catalysts for methylene blue treatment

Wu Mingzhou,He Shuqing,Ha Enna,Hu Junqing,Ruan Shuangchen

The removal of toxic organic dyes from wastewater has received much attention from the perspective of environmental protection. Metal oxides see wide use in pollutant degradation due to their chemical stability, low cost, and broader light absorption spectrum. In this work, a Cu2O−centered nanocomposite Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2−PEG with an average diameter of 52 nm was prepared for the first time via a wet chemical route. In addition, highly dispersed MnO2 particles and PEG modification were realized simultaneously in one step, meanwhile, Cu2O was successfully protected under a dense SiO2 shell against oxidation. The obtained Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2−PEG showed excellent and stable photo−Fenton−like catalytic activity, attributed to integration of visible light−responsive Cu2O and H2O2−responsive MnO2. A degradation rate of 92.5% and a rate constant of 0.086 min−1 were obtained for methylene blue (MB) degradation in the presence of H2O2 under visible light for 30 min. Additionally, large amounts of •OH and 1O2 species played active roles in MB degradation. Considering the enhanced degradation of MB, this stable composite provides an efficient catalytic system for the selective removal of organic contaminants in wastewater.

Zelin Shan,Fang Ma,Shijie You,Lianbin Shan,Deyong Kong,Haijuan Guo,Chongwei Cui

Efficient photo-Fenton removal of antibiotic effluent is a widely followed and significant attempt to deal with the growing environmental pollution . In this study, BiFeO 3 and lanthanum doped BiFeO 3 catalysts were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method as hydrogen peroxide activator for mineralization of norfloxacin (NOR). Various characterization measurements were used to verify La was successfully doped into the lattice of perovskite and investigated the effect of La doping molar ratio on BiFeO 3 through the characterization of the morphology and physicochemical properties . The degradation experiment and reaction rate constants showed that the La-doped BiFeO 3 particle exhibited superior photo-Fenton catalytic performance to undoped BiFeO 3 . Especially, the degradation efficiency of 15% La-doped BiFeO 3 could reach up to 84.94%. And the first order kinetic constant of optimized conditions was 0.01638 min −1 , which was about 6.9 times than that of undoped BiFeO 3 .The influence of pH, oxidizer content and catalyst dosage in photo-Fenton reaction were investigated detailedly. Besides, the synthetic catalyst possessed favorable stability and reusability with little metal leaching after many cycles of use. Radical scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance tests were carried out to conclude that the ·OH and holes were regarded as the dominate active species in the catalytic process. The narrow band gap and excellent electron transfer efficiency were the key factors for La-doped BiFeO 3 to have high catalytic efficiency in the photo-Fenton system. Current works demonstrated the great promise of La-doped BiFeO 3 in the elimination of antibiotic organics.
