Managing invasive plant presents a significant challenge to both the environment and the economy. There is an opportunity to address this issue by utilizing invasive plants as a sustainable and cost-effective source of valuable functional materials for environmental remediation. In this study, a promising Mikania micrantha biochar (MB) was synthesized by pyrolyzing an invasive plant, which was utilized for bacterial immobilization and adsorption of contaminants. By embedding Proteus terrae ZQ02-MB within a polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate gel to create a biochar-modified bacterial microsphere (BBM), the superior degradation of pesticide contaminants was observed. Taking chlorothalonil (CHT) as an example, field experiments demonstrated that BBM achieved a removal efficiency of 59.8% by the third day. Additionally, BBM not only improved the richness and diversity of soil bacteria but also enhanced the microbial community structure by the seventh day. On this basis, the adsorption capacity of MB, biofilm growth promoting ability of BBM, and the CHT mineralization ability of strain ZQ02 were validated as a joint mechanism to promote efficient CHT removal. Overall, this study proposes a composite model of invasive plant-derived biochar loaded microorganisms, which has great potential in eliminating pollutant residues and paves new paths to develop strategies for reusing invasive species resources.

One of the key reasons for the success of invasive plants is the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants. However, atmospheric nitrogen deposition may disrupt the level of available nitrogen in soil and the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants, which may alter the colonization of invasive plants. Thus, there is a pressing necessity to examine the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components on the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants. However, the progress made thus far in this field is not sufficiently detailed. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of artificially simulated nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components (i.e., nitrate, ammonium, urea, and mixed nitrogen) on the functional differences between the Asteraceae invasive plantBidens pilosaL. and the Asteraceae native plantPterocypsela laciniata(Houtt.) Shih. The study was conducted over a four-month period using a pot-competitive co-culture experiment. The growth performance ofP. laciniata, in particular with regard to the sunlight capture capacity (55.12% lower), plant supporting capacity (45.92% lower), leaf photosynthetic area (51.24% lower), and plant growth competitiveness (79.92% lower), may be significantly inhibited under co-cultivation condition in comparison to monoculture condition.Bidens pilosaexhibited a more pronounced competitive advantage overP. laciniata, particularly in terms of the sunlight capture capacity (129.43% higher), leaf photosynthetic capacity (40.06% higher), and enzymatic defense capacity under stress to oxidative stress (956.44% higher). The application of artificially simulated nitrogen deposition was found to facilitate the growth performance of monoculturalP. laciniata, particularly in terms of the sunlight capture capacity and leaf photosynthetic area.Bidens pilosaexhibited a more pronounced competitive advantage (the average value of the relative dominance index ofB. pilosais ≈ 0.8995) thanP. laciniataunder artificially simulated nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components, especially when treated with ammonium (the relative dominance index ofB. pilosais ≈ 0.9363) and mixed nitrogen (the relative dominance index ofB. pilosais ≈ 0.9328). Consequently, atmospheric nitrogen deposition, especially the increased relative proportion of ammonium in atmospheric nitrogen deposition, may facilitate the colonization ofB. pilosavia a stronger competitive advantage.

The increasing threat of biological invasion poses significant challenges to global ecosystems, necessitating urgent management measures. This study investigated the potential of biochar derived from invasive plantChromolaena odorata, produced through anaerobic digestion, as a tool for mitigating the soil legacy effects of this species and restoring the plant community. Soil samples were collected from artificially constructed plots of invasive plant communities and were subjected to treatments with different levels of fungicide and biochar addition. Potted plant communities replicating the original species composition were established, and biomass were used to evaluate the effectiveness of soil restoration. Our results demonstrated that soil sterilization enhanced plant biomass, with invasive plants showing a more pronounced increase compared to native species, indicating different responses to the soil biota. The addition of biochar influenced plant biomass, with an optimal biochar concentration of 2% of the soil mass, promoting the growth of native plants. The application of biochar in conjunction with soil sterilization facilitated the restoration of native communities in areas with low invasion intensity. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the potential of biochar-based strategies for managing invasive plants and restoring ecosystems, underscoring the necessity for further research to optimize field applications and evaluate ecological impacts.

Herein, we developed the invasive plant-derived biochar (IPB) functionalized with CaAl-LDH at five mass ratios using a physical mixture method, assessed their adsorption perform for Eu(III), and explored the relative mechanisms. Results show that the IPB successfully loaded CaAl-LDH in five composites and their Eu(III) sorption affinities were strongly affected by solution pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass ratio of LDH and IPB. All the sorpiton process for Eu(III) occurred on the heterogeneous surface of five composites and the boundary layer diffusion limited the chemical sorption rate. Interestingly, the CaAl-LDH/IPB composite with high ratio of IPB had higher sorption capacity than the one with high ratio of LDH due to larger porosity of the former. Three mechanisms containing ion exchange between Al and Eu ions, surface complexation with carboxyl- and oxygen-containing functional groups, and precipitation were involved in the Eu(III) sorption, but the dominant sorption mechanism for each CaAl-LDH/IPB composite differed with different mass ratio of CaAl-LDH and IPB. In composite with more IPB (e.g., CaAl-LDH/IPB-13), both ion exchange and surface complexes dominated the sorption process and the intensity of Eu 3+ was identified with the one of Eu 2 O 3. Whereas in composites with high LDH, ion exchange dominated the sorption and the intensity of Eu 3+ was obviously higher than the one of Eu 2 O 3 . This research will provide a new perspective for the application of the LDH/biochar materials.

Soil N-fixing bacteria communities (SNB) can increase soil N availability, which can facilitate invasions of many kinds of invasive plant species. Meanwhile, variability in the forms of anthropogenic N deposition can mediate obvious shifts in both soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities (especially SNB). This can alter the soil micro-ecological mechanisms of plant invasions via changes in soil characteristics and soil microbial communities, especially SNB. This study uses next-generation high throughput sequencing technology to provide insight into the effects of invasion by Amaranthus retroflexus L. on the structure and diversity of SNB under different forms of simulated N deposition (SND). Soil pH under A. retroflexus invasion under various forms of SND was 8.08% lower than controls under a NH 4 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), 15.15% lower than controls under a NO 3 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), and 6.57% lower than controls under CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N and Mix-N treatments ( P < 0.05). Meanwhile, soil pH was one of the most important environmental variables explaining changes in the structure and diversity of SNB. The total number of species of SNB under A. retroflexus invasion was approximately 13.13% higher than controls for the NH 4 -N treatment ( P > 0.05), 11.00% higher than controls for the NO 3 -N treatment ( P > 0.05), 39.42% higher than controls for the CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), and 27.67 higher than controls for the Mix-N treatment ( P < 0.05). The positive effects mediated by the combined treatments of A. retroflexus invasion and SND may be ascribed to enhanced soil nutrient content (especially N), which can enhance the abundance of the nifH gene. The effects of A. retroflexus invasion on the total number of species of SNB under organic and mixed-N addition were greater than under inorganic N addition. This may be a consequence of a disturbance of the balance of inorganic to organic N for SND, as a result of the addition of a single form of inorganic N, which can diminish the stimulatory effects of soil nutrient content on SNB under inorganic N. Another potential cause of this pattern may be stronger acidification under inorganic N addition, which can exert more pronounced effects on SNB. LEfSe analysis showed that some species changed significantly under A. retroflexus invasion in the presence of SND (i.e., Rhodobacteraceae under NH 4 -N and Proteobacteria under CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N). Thus, A. retroflexus invasion in the presence of SND caused obvious shifts in certain species of SNB and increased the total number of species of SNB in particular, to facilitate its further invasion.

Land use change and extreme precipitation are the main challenges for tropical forests, and numerous studies have indicated that these changes could affect soil ecology. However, it is not yet known whether the soil legacy effect of ongoing changes could influence the invasiveness of alien plants. Two mixtures of invader and native species ( Chromolaena odorata - Artemisia leucophylla and C. odorata - Desmodium sequax ) were transplanted to 18 soil treatments (3 forest types × 3 pre-water supply levels × 2 microorganism treatments). The results showed that the biomass of the invader was greater while its biomass fraction was lower in secondary forest soil than in primary and rubber forest soil; the soil legacy effect of drought was positive on both the biomass and biomass fraction of C. odorata . In rubber plantation soil, the biomass and biomass fraction of C. odorata were enhanced by the pre-increased water supply level. In primary and rubber forests, compared with normal precipitation, the sterilization treatment increased the biomass of the invader under drought and increased precipitation. The nutrient cycle and microorganisms both played a crucial role in this process. Overall, our study demonstrated the pronounced soil legacy effect of land use change, extreme precipitation and their interactions on the invasion success of C. odorata .

Given the harm caused by invasive plants to the environment and the high cost of treatment, we propose high-value transformation and utilization for invasive plants. Highly porous carbon derived from invasive plant (Canada goldenrod) was successfully synthesized through a feasible and green carbonization approach, which was firstly utilized as supercapacitor electrode. It is found that the addition of nitrogen (N)-rich chlorella could positively increase the N content and considerably boost the specific surface area up to 2231.41 m 2 g −1 for the resultant Carbon-GC 1 -800, which are crucial factors for accelerating the ion transport and improving the capacitive behaviors. Notably, Carbon-GC 1 -800 exhibits the highest ratio (70.9 %) of microporous volume to total pore volume. The electrochemical properties of Carbon-GC 1 -800 electrode exhibits an outstanding specific capacitance of 388.2 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 and a superb rate capability of 75.7 % from 0.5 A g −1 to 10 A g −1 . The assembled symmetric supercapacitor with ionic liquid as electrolyte demonstrates the exceptional maximum power density of 8753.7 W kg −1 and peak energy density of 59.3 Wh kg −1 . This study presents the novel ideas and effective techniques to produce porous carbons for energy storage from invasive plant resources.

In this study, a novel and environmental-friendly biochar prepared by alien species, Alternanthera philoxeroides ( AP ) under a temperature range of 300–700˚C (BC300-BC700), was applied to remove phenanthrene (PHE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and PHE/PCE bi-contaminant from aqueous solutions. Interestingly, the maximum adsorption capacity of AP biochar changed nonlinearly as the pyrolysis temperature increased, with BC400 and BC300 having the highest maximum adsorption capacities of 2.83 and 2.13 mg/g, respectively, followed by BC700, BC500, and BC600. The sorption kinetics of PHE and PCE on BC300 under single- and bi-contaminant conditions can be described by pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetic models, respectively. In addition, it was observed that PHE and PCE could be removed simultaneously by BC300, and the presence of PHE inhibited the maximum sorption capacity of PCE onto AP biochar. Furthermore, this study revealed that the functional groups of C-O, C = O, and C = C played a key role in the removal of PHE/PCE from bi-contaminant solutions. These findings suggested that pyrolysis of invasive plants can be an option to control invasive plants and also contribute to the adsorption of organic contaminants for contaminant remediation. Invasive plants pose a great threat to natural ecosystems owing to their rapid propagation and spreading ability in nature. Herein, a typical invasive plant, Solidago canadensis, was chosen as a novel feedstock for the preparation of nano-sized lanthanum-loaded S. canadensis-derived biochar (SCBC-La), and its adsorption performance for phosphate removal was evaluated by batch adsorption experiment. The composite was characterized by multiple techniques. Effects of parameters, such as the initial concentration of phosphate, time, pH, coexisting ions, and ionic strength, were studied on the phosphate removal. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms showed that SCBC-La shows a faster adsorption rate at a low concentration and SCBC-La exhibits good La utilization efficiency than some of the reported La-modified adsorbents. Phosphate can be effectively removed over a relatively wide pH of 3–9 because of the high pHpzc of SCBC-La. Furthermore, the SCBC-La shows a strong anti-interference capability in terms of pH value, coexisting ions, and ionic strength, exhibiting a highly selective capacity for phosphate removal. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements reveal that hydroxyl groups on the surface of SCBC-La were replaced by phosphate and manifest the reversible transformation between La(OH)3 and LaPO4. Considering its high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity, SCBC-La is a promising material for preventing eutrophication. This work gives a new method of pollution control with waste treatment since the invasive plant (S. canadensis) is converted into biochar-based nanocomposite for effective removal of phosphate to mitigate eutrophication.

High toxicity is the main reason for the limited application of traditional corrosion inhibitors. Herein, it is critical to find a green, efficient, and long-term stable alternative substitute for the hazardous and conventional corrosion inhibitor.Ambrosia trifida Lis widely distributed in fields and riverside wetlands as an invasive plant in China. According to the concept of turning waste into treasure, the extract ofAmbrosia trifida Lleaves (ATL) has the potential to address this issue due to its natural origin and abundant presence of heterocyclic organics. Therefore, ATL, as a green corrosion inhibitor, is prepared for the first time via a simple water-based extraction method. FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and UV-Vis (UV-visible) indicate that ATL extract contains abundant heterocyclic organics with conjugated structures, which exhibit the potential to become a high-efficiency inhibitor. Notably, the active sites of ATL molecules and their interaction with Q235 steel at the molecular/atomic level are revealed via theoretical calculations. The highestEbindingvalue observed for the major components in the ATL extract is 259.66 kcal/mol, implying a significant adsorption capacity. The electrochemical results verify that microdose ATL extract can prominently inhibit steel corrosion, and the highest inhibition efficiency (η) is 97.5% (1000 mg/L). Following immersion for 24 h, theηvalue is enhanced to 99.0%, indicating a reliable and long-term ATL extract protection film is formed on the steel surface in harsh acidic solutions. The results of the weight loss, SEM (scanning electron microscope), and LSCM (laser scanning confocal microscopy) are consistent with the above conclusions. Finally, this study anticipates providing theoretical support for developing novel green plant extract inhibitors and aiding in their application in industrial pickling environments.

Low-cost multifunctional sorbents are urgently needed, especially for the treatment of emerging pollutants that are widely distributed in various water environments. This work transformed an aquatic invasive plant, Pistia stratotes , into magnetic porous biochars (P-MPBs) based on a proposed strategy involving sequential carbonization to increase porosity and subsequent coprecipitation with ferric salts. Both the porous structure (specific surface area of up to 996.86 m 2 /g) and high Fe 3 O 4 loading (saturation magnetization of up to 23.48 emu/g) were maintained. A typical plasticizer, diethyl phthalate (DEP), was selected as a model emerging organic pollutant, and the sorption quantity of the P-MPBs reached 490.04 mg g −1 , which is much higher than that of many reported sorbents, especially magnetic sorbents. P-MPBs can be reused multiple times due to their excellent separation characteristics and stable structure. On the basis of kinetics and isotherm analysis, multilayer sorption, including pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and partitioning, was the main DEP sorption process for the P-MPBs. Our study suggested that the proposed method could be promising and inspiring for the transformation of biowaste into excellent magnetic porous biochar that is recyclable and highly efficient at removing pollutants in water.

Traditional brackish water desalination technologies have been facing significant challenges, such as processing complexity, high energy consumption, and operational costs. In this context, using solar-driven evaporation for water desalination represents an emerging, low-cost, and sustainable approach to the global freshwater crisis. To achieve effective desalination of brackish water (or seawater), in this work, we have developed an invasive plant species-based novel evaporator through chemical treatment and hydrothermal carbonization of Rhus typhina L. ( R. typhina ) wood and synergistic modification of treated R. typhina wood with polydopamine (PDA) and Ti 2 O 3 nanoparticles (Ti 2 O 3 NPs). The Ti 2 O 3 /PDA@Wood evaporator exhibits an excellent water transport performance, solar absorption, and photothermal conversion efficiency, achieving an evaporation rate of 2.15 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and photothermal conversion efficiency of 97.84 % in pure water under 1 sun irradiation. In addition, salt tolerance test results show that an evaporation rate of 1.53 kg·m −2 ·h −1 was obtained even in high-salinity water (10.5 wt% NaCl) under 1 sun irradiation, demonstrating the evaporator has certain salt tolerance and self-cleaning capabilities. Moreover, during an 8-h simulated brackish water desalination experiment, the evaporator exhibited an evaporation rate of 1.81–1.90 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , proving that it has excellent stability. This investigation demonstrates the unique design approach of the Ti 2 O 3 /PDA@Wood evaporator developed in this study not only shows an excellent evaporation performance and high salt tolerance but also provides a new strategy for the sustainable and resource utilization of invasive plant species. In summary, this research offers an innovative and effective solution for tackling global freshwater scarcity and controlling invasive plant species.
