The allelopathy of alien plants is critical to their successful invasion. In nature, two alien plants can co-invade the same habitat. Changes in the forms of nitrogen may have the potential to alter the invasion process of alien plants by causing alterations in their allelopathy. This study aimed to evaluate the individual and combined allelopathy of two alien plants from theAsteraceaefamily,Solidago canadensisL. andConyza canadensis(L.) Cronq. This study examined the effects of aqueous leaf extracts of the two alien plants with different nitrogen forms (NO3−N, NH4−N, and CO(NH2)2−N, and the mixed nitrogen forms at a 1:1:1 ratio) on the seed germination and seedling growth of the horticulturalAsteraceaespeciesLactuca sativaL. using a germination bioassay. The allelopathy of the two alien plants significantly reduced the seed germination and seedling growth ofL. sativa. Extracts fromS. canadensisproduced stronger allelopathy on the seed germination and seedling growth ofL. sativacompared with those fromC. canadensis. The mixture of extracts from the two alien plants produced an antagonistic effect when compared with the effects of extracts from each plant species. The addition of nitrogen intensified the allelopathy of the two alien plants on the seed germination and seedling growth ofL. sativa. The degree of influence of nitrogen on the individual and combined allelopathy of the two alien plants was similar. Thus, nitrogen deposition may facilitate the independent invasion and co-invasion of the two alien plants via intensified allelopathy. Keywords:alien plant;allelochemicals;aqueous leaf extracts;nitrogen deposition;Lactuca sativaL.

The gastric sieve (GS) is a filtering structure found in the posterior stomach chamber (PSC) of Litopenaeus vannamei , which allows small particles to enter the hepatopancreas directly. However, it remains unclear if pathogens can also enter the hepatopancreas through this pathway. In this study, we examined the internal structural changes of the PSC via histological and ultra-structure analysis. We also orally administered fluorescent microspheres and bioparticles ( Vibrio parahaemolyticus and WSSV) of varying sizes to shrimp to determine their passage under hypoxia stress. The results showed that the PSC could be divided into four segments based on structural changes, and the GS performed its filtering function through two kinds of setae with different morphologies. Under normal dissolved oxygen levels (approximately 7.6 mg/L), V. parahaemolyticus and 1 μm fluorescent microspheres were unable to enter the hepatopancreas via GS. In contrast, under hypoxia stress (1.5–2 mg/L), both vibrio and 1 μm fluorescent microspheres could enter the hepatopancreas via GS in a short timeframe. WSSV and 0.1 μm fluorescent microspheres could enter the hepatopancreas via GS irrespective of hypoxia stress, while 5 μm fluorescent microspheres could not enter the hepatopancreas via GS even under hypoxia. These results suggest that GS functions as a particle diameter-dependent filter, with its filtering function influenced by hypoxia stress. Pathogens around 1 μm in size can invade the hepatopancreas through this pathway under hypoxia stress, providing novel insights into the mechanisms of pathogen invasion in shrimp.

Managing invasive plant presents a significant challenge to both the environment and the economy. There is an opportunity to address this issue by utilizing invasive plants as a sustainable and cost-effective source of valuable functional materials for environmental remediation. In this study, a promising Mikania micrantha biochar (MB) was synthesized by pyrolyzing an invasive plant, which was utilized for bacterial immobilization and adsorption of contaminants. By embedding Proteus terrae ZQ02-MB within a polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate gel to create a biochar-modified bacterial microsphere (BBM), the superior degradation of pesticide contaminants was observed. Taking chlorothalonil (CHT) as an example, field experiments demonstrated that BBM achieved a removal efficiency of 59.8% by the third day. Additionally, BBM not only improved the richness and diversity of soil bacteria but also enhanced the microbial community structure by the seventh day. On this basis, the adsorption capacity of MB, biofilm growth promoting ability of BBM, and the CHT mineralization ability of strain ZQ02 were validated as a joint mechanism to promote efficient CHT removal. Overall, this study proposes a composite model of invasive plant-derived biochar loaded microorganisms, which has great potential in eliminating pollutant residues and paves new paths to develop strategies for reusing invasive species resources.

One of the key reasons for the success of invasive plants is the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants. However, atmospheric nitrogen deposition may disrupt the level of available nitrogen in soil and the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants, which may alter the colonization of invasive plants. Thus, there is a pressing necessity to examine the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components on the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants. However, the progress made thus far in this field is not sufficiently detailed. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of artificially simulated nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components (i.e., nitrate, ammonium, urea, and mixed nitrogen) on the functional differences between the Asteraceae invasive plantBidens pilosaL. and the Asteraceae native plantPterocypsela laciniata(Houtt.) Shih. The study was conducted over a four-month period using a pot-competitive co-culture experiment. The growth performance ofP. laciniata, in particular with regard to the sunlight capture capacity (55.12% lower), plant supporting capacity (45.92% lower), leaf photosynthetic area (51.24% lower), and plant growth competitiveness (79.92% lower), may be significantly inhibited under co-cultivation condition in comparison to monoculture condition.Bidens pilosaexhibited a more pronounced competitive advantage overP. laciniata, particularly in terms of the sunlight capture capacity (129.43% higher), leaf photosynthetic capacity (40.06% higher), and enzymatic defense capacity under stress to oxidative stress (956.44% higher). The application of artificially simulated nitrogen deposition was found to facilitate the growth performance of monoculturalP. laciniata, particularly in terms of the sunlight capture capacity and leaf photosynthetic area.Bidens pilosaexhibited a more pronounced competitive advantage (the average value of the relative dominance index ofB. pilosais ≈ 0.8995) thanP. laciniataunder artificially simulated nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components, especially when treated with ammonium (the relative dominance index ofB. pilosais ≈ 0.9363) and mixed nitrogen (the relative dominance index ofB. pilosais ≈ 0.9328). Consequently, atmospheric nitrogen deposition, especially the increased relative proportion of ammonium in atmospheric nitrogen deposition, may facilitate the colonization ofB. pilosavia a stronger competitive advantage.

The increasing threat of biological invasion poses significant challenges to global ecosystems, necessitating urgent management measures. This study investigated the potential of biochar derived from invasive plantChromolaena odorata, produced through anaerobic digestion, as a tool for mitigating the soil legacy effects of this species and restoring the plant community. Soil samples were collected from artificially constructed plots of invasive plant communities and were subjected to treatments with different levels of fungicide and biochar addition. Potted plant communities replicating the original species composition were established, and biomass were used to evaluate the effectiveness of soil restoration. Our results demonstrated that soil sterilization enhanced plant biomass, with invasive plants showing a more pronounced increase compared to native species, indicating different responses to the soil biota. The addition of biochar influenced plant biomass, with an optimal biochar concentration of 2% of the soil mass, promoting the growth of native plants. The application of biochar in conjunction with soil sterilization facilitated the restoration of native communities in areas with low invasion intensity. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the potential of biochar-based strategies for managing invasive plants and restoring ecosystems, underscoring the necessity for further research to optimize field applications and evaluate ecological impacts.

Fungal invasion is a main factor leading to the loss of postharvest herbs during storage. To prevent fungal invasion and clarify the favorable conditions for the stability of herbs during the storage period, uniform design and three-dimensional response surfaces were applied to investigate the relationship of the mildew degree of Radix Ophiopogonis induced by prevalent fungal isolates and the storage factors including air relative humidity (X1), temperature (X2), and moisture content (X3), in laboratory studies. Mildew degree was evaluated by ergosterol assay of mold isolates through a high-performance liquid chromatography−diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) technique. As a result, storage conditions, which satisfied the following correlation equations established by the relationships between the storage factors and the biomass of mildew (Y), could effectively prevent fungal spoilage: Y = −0.2484084028 + 0.00030711966572 × X3 × X3 + 0.00018881361186 × X1 × X2 − 0.00029473040679 × X2 × X3 ≤ 0; Y = −0.2697457586 + 0.004127756022 × X1 − 0.000015977780492 × X1 × X1 + 0.00021906984606 × X2 × X3 ≤ 0; Y = −0.325655811 + 0.015464432582 × X2 + 0.00004779394354 × X1 × X1 − 0.00021743815482 × X2 × X2 ≤ 0. This compositive methodology might be useful to predict the occurrence of fungal invasion.

Differences in functional traits between invasive and native plant species are believed to determine the invasion success of the former. Increasing amounts of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) are continually deposited into natural ecosystems, which may change the relative occurrence of the different N deposition forms (such as NH 4 –N, NO 3 –N, and CO(NH 2 ) 2 –N) naturally deposited. Under high N deposition scenarios, some invasive species may grow faster, gaining advantage over native species. In a greenhouse experiment, we grew invasive and native Amaranthus species from seed both alone and in competition under simulated N enriched environments with different forms of N over 3 months. Then, we measured different leaf traits (i.e., plant height, leaf length, leaf width, leaf shape index, specific leaf area (SLA), and leaf chlorophyll and N concentrations). Results showed that the competition intensity between A. retroflexus and A. tricolor decreased under N deposition. This may be due to the large functional divergence between A. retroflexus and A. tricolor under simulated N deposition. Phenotypic plasticity of SLA and leaf chlorophyll concentration of A. retroflexus were significantly lower than in A. tricolor . The lower range of phenotypic plasticity of SLA and leaf chlorophyll concentration of A. retroflexus may indicate a fitness cost for plastic functional traits under adverse environments. The restricted phenotypic plasticity of SLA and leaf chlorophyll concentration of A. retroflexus may also stabilize leaf construction costs and the growth rate. Meanwhile, the two Amaranthus species possessed greater plasticity in leaf N concentration under NO 3 –N fertilization, which enhanced their competitiveness.

Pomacea canaliculata, one of the 100 most destructive invasive species in the world, and it is an important intermediate host ofAngiostrongylus cantonensis. The molluscicides in current use are an effective method for controlling snails. However, most molluscicides have no slow-release effect and are toxic to nontarget organisms. Thus, these molluscicides cannot be used on a large scale to effectively act on snails. In this study, gelatin, a safe and nontoxic substance, was combined with sustained-release molluscicide and was found to reduce the toxicity of niclosamide to nontarget organisms. We assessed the effects of gelatin and molluscicide in controllingP. canaliculatasnails and eggs. The results demonstrated that the niclosamide retention time with 1.0% and 1.5% gelatin sustained-release agents reached 20 days. Additionally, the mortality rate ofP. canaliculataand their eggs increased as the concentration of the niclosamide sustained-release agents increased. The adult mortality rate ofP. canaliculatareached 50% after the snails were exposed to gelatin with 0.1 mg/L niclosamide for 48 h. The hatching rate ofP. canaliculatawas only 28.5% of the normal group after the treatment was applied. The sustained-release molluscicide at this concentration was less toxic to zebrafish, which means that this molluscicide can increase the safety of niclosamide to controlP. canaliculatain aquatic environments. In this study, we explored the safety of using niclosamide sustained-release agents with gelatin againstP. canaliculata. The results suggest that gelatin is an ideal sustained-release agent that can provide a foundation for subsequent improvements in control ofP. canaliculata. Keywords:invasive species;biological material carrier for sustained drug;Pomacea canaliculatacontrol;environmental safety

Plasmodium falciparum, mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, has received widespread attention owing to its severity. As a novel protein,P. falciparumsurface-related antigen (PfSRA) has the structural and functional characteristics to be considered as a malaria vaccine candidate; however, limited information is available on its immunogenicity. Here, we expressed three fragments of recombinant PfSRA in anEscherichia colisystem and further analyzed its immunogenicity. The results showed that rPfSRA-immunized mice produced specific antibodies with high endpoint titers (1:10,000 to 1:5,120,000) and affinity antibodies (i.e., rPfSRA-F1a (97.70%), rPfSRA-F2a (69.62%), and rPfSRA-F3a (91.87%)). In addition, the sera of immunized mice recognized both the native PfSRA and recombinant PfSRA, the rPfSRA antibodies inhibited the invasion ofP. falciparuminto the erythrocytes, and they were dose-dependent in vitro. This study confirmed PfSRA could be immunogenic, especially the F1a at the conserved region N-terminal and provided further support for it as a vaccine candidate againstP.falciparum.Keywords:Plasmodium falciparum;surface-related antigen;immunogenicity;invasion inhibition

In recent years, the invasive cypress bark beetle ( Phloeosinus aubei ) has caused extensive damage to Platycladus orientalis plants in China, but its infestation is hard to monitor in the early stages. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was initially employed to investigate the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of P. aubei- infested P. orientalis saplings. The emissions of total sesquiterpenes were dominating (84−86% of total VOCs) and increased by 3.09-fold in P. aubei- damaged P. orientalis samples compared to undamaged samples, and the monoterpenes, aromatic compounds, and ketone emissions also had varying degrees of increase between 1.39-fold and 5.65-fold. Based on this variation, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) was applied, as an untargeted analytical approach, to discriminate P. orientalis samples with different invasive severity. Two different features derived from GC-IMS data were adopted as the input information for classification and prediction models. Results showed that grid search support vector machine (GS-SVM) combined with multilinear principal component analysis (MPCA) based on spectral fingerprint achieved the best classification performances (> 88.98%), and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSR) method can accurately predict the pest numbers ( R 2 > 0.9423 and RMSE < 0.9827). In a word, the VOC profiling-based approach had the potential for evaluating P. aubei invasive severity and pest management.

Herein, we developed the invasive plant-derived biochar (IPB) functionalized with CaAl-LDH at five mass ratios using a physical mixture method, assessed their adsorption perform for Eu(III), and explored the relative mechanisms. Results show that the IPB successfully loaded CaAl-LDH in five composites and their Eu(III) sorption affinities were strongly affected by solution pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass ratio of LDH and IPB. All the sorpiton process for Eu(III) occurred on the heterogeneous surface of five composites and the boundary layer diffusion limited the chemical sorption rate. Interestingly, the CaAl-LDH/IPB composite with high ratio of IPB had higher sorption capacity than the one with high ratio of LDH due to larger porosity of the former. Three mechanisms containing ion exchange between Al and Eu ions, surface complexation with carboxyl- and oxygen-containing functional groups, and precipitation were involved in the Eu(III) sorption, but the dominant sorption mechanism for each CaAl-LDH/IPB composite differed with different mass ratio of CaAl-LDH and IPB. In composite with more IPB (e.g., CaAl-LDH/IPB-13), both ion exchange and surface complexes dominated the sorption process and the intensity of Eu 3+ was identified with the one of Eu 2 O 3. Whereas in composites with high LDH, ion exchange dominated the sorption and the intensity of Eu 3+ was obviously higher than the one of Eu 2 O 3 . This research will provide a new perspective for the application of the LDH/biochar materials.

Soil N-fixing bacteria communities (SNB) can increase soil N availability, which can facilitate invasions of many kinds of invasive plant species. Meanwhile, variability in the forms of anthropogenic N deposition can mediate obvious shifts in both soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities (especially SNB). This can alter the soil micro-ecological mechanisms of plant invasions via changes in soil characteristics and soil microbial communities, especially SNB. This study uses next-generation high throughput sequencing technology to provide insight into the effects of invasion by Amaranthus retroflexus L. on the structure and diversity of SNB under different forms of simulated N deposition (SND). Soil pH under A. retroflexus invasion under various forms of SND was 8.08% lower than controls under a NH 4 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), 15.15% lower than controls under a NO 3 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), and 6.57% lower than controls under CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N and Mix-N treatments ( P < 0.05). Meanwhile, soil pH was one of the most important environmental variables explaining changes in the structure and diversity of SNB. The total number of species of SNB under A. retroflexus invasion was approximately 13.13% higher than controls for the NH 4 -N treatment ( P > 0.05), 11.00% higher than controls for the NO 3 -N treatment ( P > 0.05), 39.42% higher than controls for the CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), and 27.67 higher than controls for the Mix-N treatment ( P < 0.05). The positive effects mediated by the combined treatments of A. retroflexus invasion and SND may be ascribed to enhanced soil nutrient content (especially N), which can enhance the abundance of the nifH gene. The effects of A. retroflexus invasion on the total number of species of SNB under organic and mixed-N addition were greater than under inorganic N addition. This may be a consequence of a disturbance of the balance of inorganic to organic N for SND, as a result of the addition of a single form of inorganic N, which can diminish the stimulatory effects of soil nutrient content on SNB under inorganic N. Another potential cause of this pattern may be stronger acidification under inorganic N addition, which can exert more pronounced effects on SNB. LEfSe analysis showed that some species changed significantly under A. retroflexus invasion in the presence of SND (i.e., Rhodobacteraceae under NH 4 -N and Proteobacteria under CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N). Thus, A. retroflexus invasion in the presence of SND caused obvious shifts in certain species of SNB and increased the total number of species of SNB in particular, to facilitate its further invasion.
