Cr8O21can be used as the cathode material in all-solid-state batteries with high energy density due to its high reversible specific capacity and high potential plateau. However, the strong oxidation of Cr8O21leads to poor compatibility with polymer-based solid electrolytes. Herein, to improve the cycle performance of the battery, Al2O3atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating is applied on Cr8O21cathodes to modify the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, etc., are used to estimate the morphology of the ALD coating and the interface reaction mechanism. The electrochemical properties of the Cr8O21cathodes are investigated. The results show that the uniform and dense Al2O3layer not only prevents the polyethylene oxide from oxidization but also enhances the lithium-ion transport. The 12-ALD-cycle-coated electrode with approximately 4 nm Al2O3layer displays the optimal cycling performance, which delivers a high capacity of 260 mAh g−1for the 125th cycle at 0.1C with a discharge-specific energy of 630 Wh kg−1.Keywords:Cr8O21cathode material;atomic layer deposition;all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries;Al2O3coating

The cycle performance of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based all-solid-state lithium batteries with LiCoO 2 cathode was greatly improved via coating LiCoO 2 with high-voltage stable Li 3 AlF 6 .
At the upper cutoff voltage of 4.2 V, the poor electrochemical performance is mainly originated from the structure collapse of LiCoO 2 at the surface instead of the decomposition of PEO.
When the voltage reaches 4.5 V or even higher potentials, the intensive electrochemical decomposition of PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte accelerated interfacial degradation.

Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is one of the most attractive solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for application in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) due to its advantages of high ionic conductivity, air stability and low cost. However, the poor interfacial contact and slow Li-ion migration have greatly limited its practical application. Herein, a composite ion-conducting layer is designed at the Li/LATP interface, which a MoS 2 film is constructed on LATP via chemical vapor deposition, followed by the introduction of a solid polymer (SP) liquid precursor to form a MoS 2 @SP protective layer. This protective layer not only achieves a lower Li-ion migration energy barrier, but also adsorbs more Li-ion, which is able to promote interfacial ion transport and improve interfacial contacts. Thanks to the improved migration and adsorption of Li-ion, the Li symmetric cell containing LATP-MoS 2 @SP exhibits a stable cycle of more than 1200 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . More remarkably, the capacity retention of the full cell assembled with LiFePO 4 cathode is as high as 86.2% after 400 cycles at 1 C. This work provides a design strategy for significantly improving unstable interfaces of SSEs and realizing high-performance ASSLBs.

Traditional liquid lithium-sulfur batteries have two key problems: poor safety and shuttle effect . These two challenges can be overcome by using solid-state electrolytes. But poor ionic and electronic conductivity due to solid/solid contact between the electrode and the electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs). Here, we have synthesized Li 6.4 Ga 0.2 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) conductive ceramics with high ionic conductivity . LLZO is used as the lithium-ion conductor and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNt) are used as the electronic conductor to form S/MWCNt/LLZO by the thermal diffusion method, resulting in an e − /S/Li + conductive network. The prepared S/MWCNt/LLZO composite material, composite solid electrolyte, and lithium metal are assembled into ASSLSBs. After 50 cycles, the high capacity of 825 mAh·g −1 is maintained with 72.62% capacity retention at 0.2C and 45 °C. The higher capacity indicates the success of forming a conductive network that can improve the electrochemical performance of ASSLSBs. At 0.2C, the capacity of the S/MWCNt/LLZO composite cathode remains at 873 mAh·g −1 after 60 cycles when the operating temperature is increased to 60 °C, indicating good cycle performance.

LiBH4 is one of the most promising candidates for use in all-solid-state lithium batteries. However, the main challenges of LiBH4 are the poor Li-ion conductivity at room temperature, excessive dendrite formation, and the narrow voltage window, which hamper practical application. Herein, we fabricate a flexible polymeric electronic shielding layer on the particle surfaces of LiBH4. The electronic conductivity of the primary LiBH4 is reduced by 2 orders of magnitude, to 1.15 × 10–9 S cm–1 at 25 °C, due to the high electron affinity of the electronic shielding layer; this localizes the electrons around the BH4– anions, which eliminates electronic leakage from the anionic framework and leads to a 68-fold higher critical electrical bias for dendrite growth on the particle surfaces. Contrary to the previously reported work, the shielding layer also ensures fast Li-ion conduction due to the fast-rotational dynamics of the BH4– species and the high Li-ion (carrier) concentration on the particle surfaces. In addition, the flexibility of the layer guarantees its structural integrity during Li plating and stripping. Therefore, our LiBH4-based solid-state electrolyte exhibits a high critical current density (11.43 mA cm–2) and long cycling stability of 5000 h (5.70 mA cm–2) at 25 °C. More importantly, the electrolyte had a wide operational temperature window (−30–150 °C). We believe that our findings provide a perspective with which to avoid dendrite formation in hydride solid-state electrolytes and provide high-performance all-solid-state lithium batteries.

All-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) are promising candidates for the development of next-generation batteries with high energy density and improved safety. Nevertheless, the sluggish reaction kinetics of the S and Li2S cathode and the low active material content hinder the further development of ASSLSBs. Herein, a Co3O4@nitrogen-doped carbon (Co3O4@NC) nanocomposite is used as an electronically conductive additive to promote the conversion kinetics of S and Li2S in the solid sulfur cathode. With a high sulfur content of 50 wt% and sulfur loading of 4 mg cm−2, ASSLSBs with the S–Co3O4@NC–Li7P3S11 (S–CoNC–LPS) composite cathode exhibit a high specific capacity of 1313 mA h g−1 at 0.2 mA cm−2, as well as a reversible capacity of 1167 mA h g−1 after 100 charge/discharge cycles. Furthermore, the S–CoNC–LPS cathode also demonstrates a high areal capacity of 16.12 mA h cm−2, corresponding to a reversible capacity of 1343 mA h g−1, and good cycling stability even with an ultra-high sulfur loading of 12 mg cm−2. Such a superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the fact that Co3O4@NC lowers the reaction energy barrier and promotes the interconversion of S and Li2S.

Developing high-voltage LiCoO 2 (LCO) is essential in realizing practical all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, high voltage-induced structural instability and oxygen evolution are crucial for the fast degradation of layered metal oxide cathodes. This study reveals that the zirconization on the near-surface region of LCO shows superior electrochemical performance at high voltage (≥ 4.5 V). High-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy firstly reveals the formation of sub-nanoscale Li 2 CoZrO 4 with disordered rock salt ( α -LiFeO 2 ) phase on the surface of LCO. Furthermore, zirconization could prevent the bending of the Co–O layers at high voltage, significantly inhibiting the formation of microcracks after many cycles and enhancing the structural stability of LCO, as further confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Further, Electron paramagnetic resonance and Electron energy loss spectroscopy provide direct experimental evidence that lattice oxygen on LCO at high voltage has greatly deactivated in sub-nanoscale zirconization (Li 2 CoZrO 4 ). Density functional theory calculations reveal that Li 2 CoZrO 4 enhances the stability of lattice oxygen. Therefore, in ASSLBs, LZSO@LCO cathode exhibits impressive electrochemical cycling stability, e.g., 78.1% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.5 C and 71.2% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.1 C at an extremely low temperature of −20 °C.

Black phosphorus/natural graphene (BP/NG) composite electrode material for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) was fabricated by a facile ball milling method. A C-P bond with characteristics of high ion and electron transfer was constructed, which unlocked the reversible cycling and rate performance of phosphorus. In addition, compounding black phosphorus (BP) with natural graphene (NG) can relieve the large internal stress caused by volume change during cycling and improve the stability of the long cycling and high-rate performance. At current density of 0.5 A g −1 , a high specific capacity of 750 mAh g −1 remained after 100 cycles, whereas at high current density of 1 A g −1 , the BP/NG anode material delivered a reversible capacity of ~300 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, the reaction controlling step of Li x P delithiation was revealed by kinetic measurement. In addition, when coupling BP/NG anode material with TiS 2 to assemble a full solid-state cell, it delivered a high capacity of 400 mAh g −1 after 30 cycles, indicating a potential of further application. This work expanded the candidate of anode materials for ASSLIBs and provided aid for the further application of all-solid-state batteries.

The interface instability between a Li-excess cation disordered rocksalt cathode (DRX) and sulfide solid electrolyte (SE) results in rapid capacity fade. It is well established that cathode coatings are important to mitigate the side reaction at interfaces and therefore increasing the reversible specific capacity of all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs). However, internal mechanism remains blurry, and the effects of the coating layer on electrode/electrolyte interface and capacity degradation have not been fully clarified. In this work, we used various coating materials on Li 1.2 Ni 0.3 Ti 0.3 Nb 0.2 O 2 (LNTNO) cathodes to investigate the behavior of the DRX/SE interfaces. The electrochemical performances are compared of uncoated, Li 2 ZrO 3 -coated, LiNbO 3 -coated, and Li 3 BO 3 (LBO)-coated cathodes in Li 6 PS 5 Cl-based ASSLBs in long charge–discharge processes. The results demonstrate that all coated LNTNO could improve specific capacity and cycle performance. Li 3 BO 3 is identified as a superior coating with good structural stability that exhibits observably large discharge capacity (206 mAh g −1 at 10 mA g −1 ), long cycle life (100 cycles, capacity retention of 78%), as well as outstanding rate property. Combined with ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope, we can observe the side reactions at cathode/electrolyte interface can be mitigated after the LBO coating layer, enabling fast lithium transport dynamics. This work highlights the critical role of having an appropriate coating layer and offers a promising path to enhance the electrochemical behaviors of ASSLBs. Graphical abstract

Selenium with a similar reaction mechanism with sulfur and a much higher electronic conductivity is considered to be a promising cathode for all-solid-state rechargeable batteries. Herein, selenium-infused ordered mesoporous carbon composites (Se/CMK-3) are successfully prepared by a melt-diffusion method from a ball-milled mixture of Se and CMK-3 (Se-CMK-3). Furthermore, their electrochemical performances are evaluated in all-solid-state lithium–selenium batteries at room temperature. Typically, Li/75%Li2S-24%P2S5-1%P2O5/Li10GeP2S12/Se/CMK-3 all-solid-state lithium–selenium batteries exhibit high reversible capacity of 488.7 mAh g–1 at 0.05 C after 100 cycles. Even being cycled at 0.5C, it still maintains a discharge capacity of 268.7 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performances could be attributed to the enhanced electronic/ionic conductivities and structural integrity with the addition of the CMK-3 matrix.

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries have great scope in the development of advanced secondary batteries owing to their high energy density and nonflammability. However, high contact resistance at the solid/solid (electrode/electrolyte) interface and the possible existence of side reactions limit their large-scale applications. In this study, a π-d conjugated coordination structure was established between a cathode and electrolyte: 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DHBQ) was the cathode and polyvinylidene fluoride-based Li0.33La0.557TiO3 (PVDF-LLTO) polymer was the solid-state electrolyte. First-principle calculations and performed experiments showed that CO and O–H groups in DHBQ can be coordinated with La3+ in LLTO, and this π-d conjugate coordination structure strengthens the contact interface between the electrode material and solid electrolyte, which further increases the cycling life and durability of all-solid-state batteries.

Aluminum (Al) exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical ductility, and good chemical compatibility with high-ionic-conductivity electrolytes. This makes it more suitable as an anode material for all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) compared to the overly reactive metallic lithium anode and the mechanically weak silicon anode. This study finds that the pre-lithiated Al anode demonstrates outstanding interfacial stability with the Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSCl) electrolyte, maintaining stable cycling for over 1200 h under conditions of deep charge–discharge. This paper combines the pre-lithiated Al anode with a high-nickel cathode, LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 , paired with the highly ionic conductive LPSCl electrolyte, to design an ASSLB with high energy density and stability. Using anode pre-lithiation techniques, along with dual-reinforcement technology between the electrolyte and the cathode active material, the ASSLB achieves stable cycling for 1000 cycles at a 0.2C rate, with a capacity retention rate of up to 82.2%. At a critical negative-to-positive ratio of 1.1, the battery’s specific energy reaches up to 375 Wh kg −1 , and it maintains over 85.9% of its capacity after 100 charge–discharge cycles. This work provides a new approach and an excellent solution for developing low-cost, high-stability all-solid-state batteries.
