All-day freshwater harvesting enabled by designing benzoxazine molecule with intrinsic photothermal conversion and radiation cooling ability

Liyue Zhang,Jingkai Liu,Xiaoling Liu,Xinbei Zhu,Jinyue Dai,Xiaoqing Liu,Xiaosu Yi

The importance of clean water resources for human health and economic development cannot be overlooked. Providing a way for fully passive all-day freshwater harvesting presents a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a strategy for all-day freshwater harvesting passively through a freestanding Janus film which combining solar-driven interfacial desalination during day time and dew water generation driven by passive radiative cooling at night. Specifically, the core of the strategy was a new bio-based benzoxazine which containing high-infrared emittance in the atmospheric window and the resultant cured black freestanding film owns a steady high light absorbance in the whole range of the solar irradiation wavelength. The home-made device made by the Janus film achieved a drinkable freshwater collection efficiency of 90.9 % when desalinating seawater under 1 sun illumination and achieved a dew water collection rate of 68.36 g m −2 day −1 at night. Moreover, the film has an excellent antibacterial effect, which ensures the quality of water collection and enhances the service life. Combining the advantages of bio-based raw materials, a simple fabrication process and scalability of the film, the all-day freshwater collection system makes a promising solution to alleviate freshwater shortage in many arid regions, islands and even boats sailing on the sea.

Polyoxometalate film simultaneously converts multiple low-value all-weather environmental energy to electricity

Ting Wang,Tuo Ji,Weilin Chen,Xiaohong Li,Wei Guan,Yun Geng,Xinlong Wang,Yangguang Li,Zhenhui Kang

The conversion of low-value natural environmental energy into the clean and high-value electricity provides a promising approach for solving the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Using one device to directly convert all-weather environmental energy into electricity is an ideal goal and still remains a great challenge. Here, we assembled a simple and multifunctional device with the polyoxometalate (POM)/ethyl cellulose composite film on metal substrate, which generates electricity from multiple low-value all-weather environmental energy, including sunlight, wind and raindrops. For example, the optimal Mo 72 Cr 30 /ethyl cellulose composite film (Mo 72 Cr 30  wt% = 71.4%) exhibits remarkable output performance with the responsivity of 176.3 μA W −1 under AM 1.5 G solar light, an average output of 4.48 μW m −2 from wind at a speed of 10 m s −1 , and an average output of 0.25 μW m −2 from raindrops at a dripping rate of 7 mL min −1 , as well as the better output power density of 6.32 μW m −2 , 0.54 μW m −2 and 8.71 μW m −2 simultaneously driven by sunlight and wind, sunlight and raindrops, wind and raindrops, respectively. It also achieves an average output power density of 17.7 μW m −2 , as well as long-term durability when it is simultaneously driven by sunlight, wind and raindrops, which exhibits 4 and 70 times than single wind and raindrops condition. For this composite film, the maximum power density is achieved at a very low resistance load of about 10 Ω. The output power arises from the high efficient transport of photo-generated electrons and electrostatic charges from Mo 72 Cr 30 to metal substrate.

All-weather photothermal-electrothermal integrated system for efficient solar steam generation

Shujing Zhao,Xin Zhang,Gang Wei,Zhiqiang Su

Interfacial solar-driven water evaporation is considered as an economic and efficient strategy to address the shortage of freshwater resources, which however suffers from severe salt pollution and poor long-term stable performance of seawater evaporation. Here, we design and construct a three-dimensional all-weather solar evaporator by zeolite-chitosan-TiO 2 @PPy aerogel (ZCTP), with an internally oriented pore arrangement structure by zeolite and chitosan assistance, which can efficiently enhance solar-driven water purification. Most importantly, long-term operation of the ZCTP aerogels using carbon fiber heating wires to fully utilize the solar energy that collected during the daytime to improve the efficiency of solar utilization and water purification. Benefiting from novel structural and functional design, the ZCTP aerogels exhibit high broadband light absorption (96 %), fast water transport (13 ms), and good thermal management properties (thermal conductivity of 0.1969 W m −1 K −1 in wet state). The obtained results show that the water evaporation rate of the ZCTP aerogel is 1.66 kg m -2 h −1 under 1 sun illumination. The integrated system of photothermal and electrothermal energy conversion mechanisms obtains an ultra-high water evaporation rate of 11.70 kg m -2 h −1 of 5 V voltage under 1 sun irradiation, achieving the purpose of continuous purification water around the clock. In addition, excellent salt resistance also enables perfect stability and reusability of ZCTP aerogel, even in the water with 20 % salt having minimal impact on the evaporation process and energy efficiency. Based on its excellent mechanical stability and highly ductility, simple and scalable manufacturing process, ZCTP aerogel may have great potential for all-weather efficient photothermal material for large-scale applications such as wastewater treatment, seawater desalination, and solar steam generation.

Biomass converted carbon quantum dots for all-weather solar cells

Yuanyuan Meng,Yue Zhang,Weiyin Sun,Min Wang,Benlin He,Haiyan Chen,Qunwei Tang

A great challenge for state-of-the-art photovoltaic devices is to realize electric power generation in all weathers. We constructively demonstrate here the conversion from biomass to carbon quantum dots for all-weather carbon quantum dot solar cells that can generate electricity in the daytime and in the dark. The combination of green-emitting long persistence phosphors with mesoscopic titanium dioxide realizes optical storage by composite photoanode under illumination and excitation to monochromatic green light in the dark. The optimized all-weather solar cell yields maximized dark power conversion efficiency as high as 7.97% along with persistent electricity output for several hours. This work begins a photovoltaic revolution to forward all-weather solar cells as future energy solutions.

Spray-Applied MXene Coatings on Metal–Organic Framework Monoliths for Adaptive All-Day Atmospheric Water Harvesting at Mitigated Energy Cost

Qiannan Wu,Zhiqiang Feng,Xingfu Zhou,Haiqing Li

All-day atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) presents an appealing approach for achieving high-yield water production in arid regions. However, current all-day MOF-based AWH strategies often involve intricate material preparation procedures and high energy input for water desorption, raising concerns about the water production cost. Leveraging the naturally abundant solar energy available in arid areas, herein, sprayable Ti3C2 MXene/silane-decorated hyperbranched polymer solutions (Ti3C2/sHBP) are presented. These solutions enable easy formation of robust, spray-applied coatings on monolithic MOFs upon exposure to sunlight, resulting in monolithic Ti3C2/sHBP-coated MOFs (TCM). The presence of Ti3C2/sHBP coatings equips TCMs with dual solar and electrical heating capabilities, enabling adaptive all-day AWH based on sunlight availability: solar heating-driven AWH when sufficient sunlight is present, combined solar/electrical heating-driven AWH when sunlight is insufficient, and electrical heating-driven AWH during periods without sunlight. Compared to traditional electrical heating-driven AWH, this adaptive all-day AWH delivers a similar water production performance with a 28.8% reduction in energy consumption for water desorption. Imparting MOF monoliths with dual heating functionality through a straightforward spray-applied coating demonstrates a novel, facile, and cost-effective strategy for enabling adaptive all-day AWH with excellent water productivity at a significantly mitigated energy cost.

In situ MIL-101 growth on cotton cloth to fabricate multifunctional phase change composites driven by solar and magneto-thermal for all-day desalination

Shuang Liu,Mengjie Sheng,Bingqing Quan,Yabi Yang,Qinghong Ji,Xinpeng Hu,Xiang Lu,Jinping Qu

It is certainly one of the most feasible ways to extract fresh water from seawater in the face of the current depletion of fresh water resources. Although solar energy as a heat source for desalination is the cleanest and most abundant way, its intermittent and seasonal also poses an obstacle to its practical application. In order to solve the above-mentioned issues, we prepared a series of phase change composites (PCCs) with excellent light-absorbing and magnetic properties by growing MIL-101(Fe) in situ on cotton fabric. All-day desalination through the synergistic action of phase change material (PCM) and magnetic particles. The evaporation rate of PCC can reach 2.76 kg m −2 h −1 with an evaporation efficiency of 90.19 % under one sunlight condition. The evaporation rate of sea water under the synergistic effect of magnetic particles and PCM reached 4.53 kg m −2 h −1 in the absence of sunlight. This paper provides a new approach to all-day desalination without contact heating.

Hygroscopic assisted solar photo-thermal-electric conversion system for all-day power generation and daytime water collection

Yutao Long,Xin Li,Ying Li,Likui Wang,Haiyan Zhu,Gang Shi

In the field of solar thermal electricity, it is difficult to achieve efficient solar energy utilization during the day and continuous power supply day and night at the same time. To address this issue, an integrated system for daytime photothermal power generation combined with waste hot water evaporation and nighttime hygroscopic exothermic power generation has been designed. The system consists of multifunctional composite hydrogel, thermoelectric generator, and hydrophilic porous foam from top to bottom. Among them, the multifunctional composite hydrogel is a crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) loaded with photothermal material polypyrrole (PPy) and hygroscopic material CaCl 2 , and the hydrophilic porous foam is a PDMS treated by pore-making and oxygen plasma. During the night, CaCl 2 and SA in the hydrogel absorb ambient moisture and then release heat, causing the temperature difference between the two sides of the thermoelectric generator to generate electricity with a power of 15.1 mW m −2 . During the day, PPy in the hydrogel converts sunlight into heat for the thermoelectric generator to generate electricity with a power of 141.8 mW m −2 , and the waste heat of the thermoelectric generator is then used to evaporate the water in the porous PDMS with a rate of 1.311 kg m -2 h −1 , realizing the multi-stage utilization of solar energy with a high efficiency of 80 %. Therefore, this integrated system can not only use solar energy efficiently, but also generate electricity continuously day and night.

Bio-inspired hydrogel with all-weather adhesion, cooling and reusability functions for photovoltaic panels

Tiezheng Lv,Lindai Sun,Yuehua Yang,Jianpin Huang

The thermal effect is a bothersome issue related to various types of photovoltaic (PV) panels in real working conditions. In this paper, we demonstrate a new and simple hydrogel cooling method that is inspired by marine mussels. We design an organic–inorganic hydrogel with all-weather adhesive and tunable cooling functions. Adhesion is achieved by the formation of amorphous calcium carbonate/polyacrylic acid hydrogel, and tunable cooling is achieved by the absorption of a phase change material into the hydrogel. Structural, thermal and electrical characterizations of this dual-function hydrogel are done. Reusability of the hydrogel by water swelling is also demonstrated. After optimization of the composition, applications of this hydrogel for backsheet and PV panel are evaluated, and according to our design, rough stable 70 Wm −2 cooling power could be obtained using only 0.5 g optimized hydrogel on a standard six-inch PV panel without weakening the conversion efficiency, and consequential power output gain is also proved. Most importantly, this “plug-and-play” adhesive material simplifies the cooling process, adapts to dry or wet conditions, and reduces the fabrication cost significantly.

Photoelectrons storage behavior in SrAl2O4:Eu2+/Dy3+@g-C3N4 persistent photocatalyst for round-the-clock hydrogen generation

Xiaoyan Wang,Yu Yuan,Jingru Lai,Xiaoli Shi,Mingye Ding

Solar-driven water splitting for hydrogen production is a pivotal technique for sustainable energy conversion. However, its efficiency is constrained by intermittent solar irradiation and rapid charge recombination. To overcome these limitations, designing a round-the-clock photocatalyst with high charge storage capacity that can still operate effectively under low light flux after sunset and promote charge carrier separation is a promising strategy. Herein, by selecting SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ /Dy 3+ persistent phosphors as electron-trapped centers and g-C 3 N 4 semiconductor as visible-light photocatalyst, SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ /Dy 3+ @g-C 3 N 4 composite has been successfully synthesized via in-situ growth strategy to form a conventional type II heterojunction photocatalyst. Benefiting from the excellent ability of charge storage and release from electron traps and the improved electron-hole separation efficiency, the designed round-the-clock photocatalyst exhibits the improved hydrogen production from 153.8 μmol g −1  h −1 to 560 μmol g −1  h −1 under visible-light irradiation, infrared-light-driven H 2 production of 932 μmol g −1 for 3 h and a dark activity of 269.1 μmol g −1  h −1 lasing for 0.5 h. This work provides a promising strategy for designing a highly efficient photocatalyst for wide-spectral-responsive and all-weather photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Janus-structured self-floating hydrogel via thermal localization and arched evaporation interface design toward all-weather efficient solar desalination

Ning Ding,Jijia Zhu,Yibo Qiao,Dahu Yao,Xiping Gao,Jing Chen,Chang Lu,Xinchang Pang

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) technology offers a sustainable solution for freshwater generation. However, the high thermal management demands of SDIE lead to complex evaporator structures, increasing engineering challenges. Moreover, maintaining a high evaporation rate in all-weather remains a significant issue. In this study, A Janus-structured hydrogel with a porous hydrophobic interior and a dense hydrophilic surface was fabricated. The hydrophobic interior enables the hydrogel to self-float on water, providing excellent thermal insulation through enclosed air. The hydrophilic surface layer forms a two-dimensional water transport channel that limits heat transfer to the water body. The excellent thermal management allows the self-floating evaporator to achieve an evaporation rate of 2.35 kg·m - 2 ·h - 1 under 1 sun. The arch-shaped structure further boosts the evaporation rate to 3.48 kg·m - 2 ·h - 1 and ensures high evaporation rates under varying solar angles and intensities. At a low incident angle of 30°, the evaporation rate is 3.26 kg·m - 2 ·h - 1 , only 6.3 % lower than at 90°. Under low light intensity (0.3 sun), the evaporation rate reaches 1.51 kg·m - 2 ·h - 1 . The evaporator also demonstrates excellent compressive strength and antibacterial properties, showing great potential for seawater desalination.

A solar-electric dual-driven microporous hydrogel evaporator for all-weather highly efficient water purification

Junxiao Qiu,Xinye Xu,Zheng Li,Yuxuan Hu,Guiqun Liu,Xiaoming Lv,Jingkun Xu,Baoyang Lu

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation technology holds significant potential for addressing global water scarcity. However, the variable nature of solar intensity in natural environments limits its reliability for all-weather highly efficient water purification. Herein, we develop a novel solar-electric dual-driven water purification evaporator featuring an electrically heated mesh within a microporous hydrogel composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polyacrylamide (PAAm). The synergistic photothermal and electrothermal effect of the microporous hydrogel enables the dual-driven evaporator to achieve an ultrafast evaporation rate of 16.35 kg m −2 h −1 under one sun irradiation with 3 A current input, demonstrating remarkable superiority to other dual-driven evaporators. Even under dark conditions, the evaporator maintains robust performance, achieving an impressive evaporation rate of 6.45 kg m −2 h −1 , which surpasses existing photothermal-driven systems. Significantly, the integration of the solar-electric dual-driven evaporator with solar panels and a mobile power source creates a water purification system that can achieve closed-loop solar energy utilization. A five consecutive rainy day outdoor validation demonstrates that such a system exhibits an excellent average water collection rate of 3.1 kg m −2 d −1 . This work provides a convenient and efficient approach to enhance the accessibility of purified water under varying environmental conditions.

A scalable wood-based interfacial evaporator assisted with localized joule heating for round-the-clock operations

Yang Ming,Shuo Shi,Wei Cai,Jing Liu,Daming Chen,Xin Hu,Rujun Yu,Xia Zhou,Benjamin Tawiah,Bin Fei

The evaporation efficiency of solar-driven interfacial steam is significantly affected by the diurnal variations in solar irradiance and is further compressed by the absence of light. This work proposes a wood-based interfacial evaporator with an auxiliary heat mode to achieve round-the-clock operations. The device was constructed using sustainable, cost-effective in-situ Ni-P electroless plating followed by hole drilling and surface graphite spray-coating. The self-floating evaporator achieves an evaporation rate of 2.20 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 Sun illumination and 2 V input in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The realized rate can be attributed to the localized interfacial heat induced by the electroless-plated Ni-P alloy (R sheet  = 1.45 Ω/sq). Moreover, adopting the novel hierarchical advantages, including mesoporous nature, low anisotropic thermal conductivity of wood, and reduced evaporation enthalpy in Ni-P film (1893 J/g), the device further reaches a daytime evaporation yield of 8.47kg m −2 on cloudy days and 14.68 kg m −2 on sunny days, respectively. And a yield of 5.33 kg m −2 with an electrical energy input of ∼ 0.71 kW m −2 is recorded during nighttime. This performance implies a significant step towards wood-based evaporators for round-the-clock water harvesting and shows potential for upscaling devices to all-weather 3D evaporators.
