Exploring low-cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts with bifunctional activities of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is practically essential for overall water splitting. Nevertheless, perfectly balancing the catalytic behavior between HER and OER continues to be a great challenge due to their distinct conducting behaviors and free energies. Herein, an advanced bifunctional electrocatalyst based on P-doped defective MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructure integrated onto highly conductive carbon cloth has been constructed for overall water splitting in acidic media. By reasonably controlling reaction conditions, the MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructure can be rationally constructed and the corresponding sulfur vacancies can be well optimized. Meanwhile, the abundant oxygen vacancies can be also created during the heat transformation processes. Benefiting from the unique structural features that favor the active species adsorption and electron transfer, the resultant A-P-M-3/CC catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, with low overpotentials of 67 and 104 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively. When coupled in a two-electrode electrolyzer, A-P-M-3/CC delivers 10 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.44 V with good stability, surpassing most of similar electrocatalysts. This work offers a novel avenue for water splitting catalyst optimization.

Investigating a single multifunctional electrode in an integrated device, such as self-powered overall water splitting (OWS), is extremely valuable since it may substantially decrease the system complexity and expense. Hence, a full rice-spike-like 400N-CDs/FeNi-TDC nanoarray combining N-hybridized carbon dots (N-CDs) and FeNi-TDC with 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (H2TDC) as ligands is constructed on the surface of a nickel foam by a one-pot solvothermal method for OWS and supercapacitor applications. Based on interface-heterojunction engineering, the morphology and electronic environment at the active sites of the nanomaterial successfully controlled by N-CDs and the heterojunction synergistically promoted efficient catalysis. The optimized 400N-CDs/FeNi-TDC electrode exhibits a 209 mV overpotential and a Tafel slope of 18.91 mV dec−1 at 10 mA cm−2 during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, as well as a low overpotential of 99 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 77.01 mV dec−1 in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As the positive electrode of the supercapacitor, the high specific capacitance of 400N-CDs/FeNi-TDC is 2388 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. The assembled self-powered OWS device uses the 400N-CDs/FeNi-TDC‖AC/NF with pre-charged 3 V as the power supply to achieve simultaneous green hydrogen and oxygen production for ∼4 min. This research provides a new platform to build state-of-the-art and sustainable energy conversion and storage devices.

As one class of important functional materials, transition metal phosphides (TMPs) nanostructures show promising applications in catalysis and energy storage fields. Although great progress has been achieved, phase-controlled synthesis of cobalt phosphides nanocrystals or related nanohybrids remains a challenge, and their use in overall water splitting (OWS) is not systematically studied. Herein, three kinds of cobalt phosphides nanocrystals encapsulated by P-doped carbon (PC) and married with P-doped graphene (PG) nanohybrids, including CoP@PC/PG, CoP-Co 2 P@PC/PG, and Co 2 P@PC/PG, are obtained through controllable thermal conversion of presynthesized supramolecular gels that contain cobalt salt, phytic acid, and graphene oxides at proper temperature under Ar/H 2 atmosphere. Among them, the mixed-phase CoP-Co 2 P@PC/PG nanohybrids manifest high electrocatalytic activity toward both hydrogen and oxygen evolution in alkaline media. Remarkably, using them as bifunctional catalysts, the fabricated CoP-Co 2 P@PC/PG || CoP-Co 2 P@PC/PG electrolyzer only needs a cell voltage of 1.567 V for driving OWS to reach the current density at 10 mA cm −2 , superior to their pure-phase counterparts and recently reported bifunctional catalysts based devices. Also, such a CoP-Co 2 P@PC/PG || CoP-Co 2 P@PC/PG device exhibits outstanding stability for OWS. This work may shed some light on optimizing TMPs nanostructures based on phase engineering, and promote their applications in OWS or other renewable energy options.

Designing carbon-free electrocatalysts that can efficiently drive hydrogen evolution (HER), oxygen evolution (OER), and zinc-air battery (ZAB) reactions in alkaline media remains difficult because of the different kinetic requirements of each process. Herein, we demonstrates a carbon-free crystalline-amorphous (C-A) Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 @CoN/Mo 2 N heterostructured nanosheets synthesized through a single-step annealing method that simultaneously forms a crystalline alloy core and an amorphous nitride shell. This direct route eliminates carbon supports and avoids multi-stage alloying or nitridation, resulting in tightly coupled C–A interfaces that accelerate charge transfer and stabilize active sites. The catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 43 mV for HER and 297 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , enabling an overall water splitting (OWS) low voltage of 1.56 V. It also maintains excellent durability under harsh electrochemical conditions owing to the absence of carbon, mitigating agglomeration and degradation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /CoN optimizes hydrogen adsorption, while the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /Mo 2 N promotes oxygen intermediate formation. Integrated into a flexible ZAB, the catalyst exhibits a high specific capacity of 811.6 mAh g −1 , a small voltage gap of 1.15 V at 50 mA cm −2 , and 150 h of stable cycling. A self-powered system coupling this flexible ZAB-OWS system further demonstrates the practical viability of this one-step-engineered C–A heterostructure for sustainable energy applications.
