Novel method for microencapsulation of eutectic hydrated salt as a phase change material for thermal energy storage

Huo Xianliang,Xie Donghuan,Zhao Zimo,Wang Shujun,Meng Fanbin

Inorganic hydrated salts have many advantages over organic phase change materials (PCMs), such as higher thermal storage density, low cost, non-toxicity and non-flammability. In this research, microcapsules loaded with eutectic hydrated salt (EHS) as the core material was fabricated via coacervation method at room temperature, with ethyl cellulose/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene as the shell material. EHS consisted of sodium sulfate decahydrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate with a mass ratio of 1:3 was prepared as the PCM with its phase change temperature of 29.3°C and phase change enthalpy of 218.58 J/g. The chemical structures and morphology were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Results indicates that the almost spherical microcapsules, with diameter around 60 μm, are of core–shell microstructures and good chemical compatibility of the core and shell material. Differential scanning calorimetry results shows that microcapsules possess a high latent heat (178.36 J/g) and excellent thermal stability and reliability, which are suitable for thermal energy storage and management in practical applications. More importantly, the simple and environmentally conscious way of this study may be extended to other promising inorganics@organics PCMs with different core–shell structured compositions.

Construction and characterization of probiotic intestinal-targeted delivery system based on complex coacervation and double-emulsion structure

Nuocheng Xu,Yutong Feng,Huiping Wan,Zilong Li,Keyu Sun,Shuhong Ye

The objective of this research was to formulate a sophisticated probiotic intestinal-targeted delivery system employing GEL (Gelatin) and CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) via intricate complex coacervation and double-emulsion structure. RSM (Response Surface Methodology) screening of cryoprotectants was undertaken and the digestive kinetic characteristics of microcapsules were comprehensively evaluated in simulated in vitro release environment. Upon optimization using response surface design, bacterial suspension was prepared using composite cryoprotectant composed of 3.07 wt% MNT (Mannitol), 4.42 wt% TCP (Taxus cuspidata polysaccharides) and 2.01 wt% GEL, achieving a cell recovery rate of 83.21%, which was 70.8% higher than free cells. The freeze-dried microcapsules presented in a stabilized bilayer system, the cell concentration after encapsulation was 8.66 log CFU/g, with encapsulation efficiency reaching 88.17%, and the particle size distribution concentrated at 299.05 μm/d. GEL and CMC conjugate through the interaction of positive and negative ions to form a complex polymer under pH of 3.5. Deprotonation occurs while pH changes in intestinal environment, enabling controlled release. In vitro release kinetics by Hixson-Crowell was closer than Higuchi model, the survival rate of encapsulated cells reached 83.64% in simulated gastric fluid, representing a 56.15% increase compared to free cells. After 6-weeks of storage in low-humidity environment at −18 °C, the recovery rate remained at 94.59%, representing a 69.17% increase compared to free cells. This research offer guiding principles and insights for future comparable research.

Synergistic Mn(II)/Fe(VI) oxidation-coagulation: A green strategy for cyanobacterial removal with moderate intracellular organic matter release

Nan Li,Haibo Liu,Bin Yang,Bo Xie,Yangtao Wu,Lingjun Bu,Shiqing Zhou

This study establishes a manganese-activated ferrate (Mn(II)/Fe(VI)) process for autonomous Microcystis aeruginosa removal, addressing the critical challenge of additive dependency and secondary pollution in conventional algal control strategies. System performance was critically governed by Mn/Fe stoichiometric ratios and total oxidant dosages, with near-complete algal elimination (>98 %) achieved at Mn/Fe = 1:1 (≥200 μM total dosage) while maintaining cell integrity. TOC analysis revealed dosage-dependent control over cellular lysis and intracellular organic matter (IOM) releasing. Spectroscopic characterization demonstrated process efficacy in degrading dissolved organics through decreased UV 254 absorbance (unsaturation reduction), declining SUVA (aromaticity loss), and elevated E2/E3 ratios (molecular weight reduction). Comparative analyses identified dissolved organic carbon as a more sensitive cellular stress indicator than K + release, attributed to MnO 2 adsorptive sequestration of released intracellular constituents. Mechanistic investigations revealed dual role of Mn(II) that rapid surface accumulation provided oxidative protection, while subsequent Fe(VI)-driven MnO x formation enabled floc growth through particle bridging. Water matrix effects followed valence-specific modulation, where divalent cations (Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ ) enhanced removal via charge screening, and excessive monovalent ions (Na + /NH 4 + ) impaired efficiency through ionic strength interference. This work pioneers a green oxidation-coagulation synergy that eliminates supplemental additives, offering a sustainable paradigm for mitigating cell rupture and IOM release in algae-laden water treatment.

pH-Driven Compartmentalization in Coacervate Protocells Enables Programmable Microreactors

Bingzhao Wu,Lianning Li,Hu Huang,Zhiyu Feng,Xinlong Zhang,Lei Zhang,Chunyu Zhao

Bottom-up construction of artificial cells is pivotal for investigating the functional and structural evolution of protocell systems. Here, a streamlined methodology is reported for constructing a protocell model that exhibits pH-adaptive responsiveness and functions as an efficient microreactor for cascade biochemical reactions. These protocells are engineered through liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), yielding coacervate microdroplets that serve as nucleation sites for spontaneous self-assembly of phospholipid semipermeable membranes. By tuning the pH environment of the membranized protocells, the hydrolytic property of ATP under acidic conditions modulates the surface charge density of coacervates, triggering elevated surface potential and altered interfacial tension, which ultimately induce secondary phase separation inside the protocells to yield dynamically reconfigurable microcompartments. Notably, introduction of small-molecule substrates triggers enzymatic reactions within the molecularly crowded lumen of the protocells, which in turn drives pH-mediated micro-compartmentalization, enabling the coupling of biocatalysis with structural dynamics. This protocell model, characterized by programmable dynamic micro-compartmentalization, offers distinct advantages for applications in cellular mimicry, synthetic protobiology, and the development of artificial biomolecular microreactors.

Steering Coacervation by a Pair of Broad-Spectrum Regulators

Shenyu Yang,Bo Li,Chunxian Wu,Weiwei Xu,Mei Tu,Yun Yan,Jianbin Huang,Markus Drechsler,Steve Granick,Lingxiang Jiang

Coacervation is liquid–liquid phase separation ubiquitous in industrial applications and cellular biology. Inspired by cellular manipulation of coacervate droplets such as P granules, we report here a regulatory strategy to manipulate synthetic coacervation in a spatiotemporally controllable manner. Two oppositely charged small molecules are shown to phase separate into coacervate droplets in water as a result of electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic effect, and entropy. We identify a down regulator, β-cyclodextrin, to disrupt the hydrophobic effect, thus dissolving the droplets, and an up regulator, amylase, to decompose β-cyclodextrin, thus restoring the droplets. The regulation kinetics is followed in real time on a single-droplet level, revealing diffusion-limited dissolution and reaction-limited condensation, respectively, taking ∼4 s and 2–3 min. Versatility of this strategy to manipulate the coacervation is demonstrated in two aspects: spatially distributed coacervation in virtue of amylase-grafted hydrogel frameworks and coacervate transportation across membranes and hydrogel networks via a disassemble-to-pass strategy. The current regulatory pairs and strategies are anticipated to be general for a wide variety of synthetic self-assembly systems.

Lignin/Surfactin Coacervate as an Eco-Friendly Pesticide Carrier and Antifungal Agent against Phytopathogen

Jie Wang,Zhichen Xiong,Yaxun Fan,Hongliang Wang,Changcheng An,Bo Wang,Ming Yang,Xue Li,Yan Wang,Yilin Wang

Excessive usage of biologically toxic fungicides and their matrix materials poses a serious threat to public health. Leveraging fungicide carriers with inherent pathogen inhibition properties is highly promising for enhancing fungicide efficacy and reducing required dosage. Herein, a series of coacervates have been crafted with lignin and surfactin, both of which are naturally derived and demonstrate substantial antifungal properties. This hierarchically assembled carrier not only effectively loads fungicides with a maximum encapsulation efficiency of 95% but also stably deposits on hydrophobic leaves for high-speed impacting droplets. Intriguingly, these coacervates exhibit broad spectrum fungicidal activity against eight ubiquitous phytopathogens and even act as a standalone biofungicide to replace fungicides. This performance can significantly reduce the fungicide usage and be further strengthened by an encapsulated fungicide. The inhibition rate reaches 87.0% when 0.30 mM pyraclostrobin (Pyr) is encapsulated within this coacervate, comparable to the effectiveness of 0.80 mM Pyr alone. Additionally, the preventive effects against tomato gray mold reached 53%, significantly surpassing those of commercial adjuvants. Thus, it demonstrates that utilizing biosurfactants and biomass with intrinsic antifungal activity to fabricate fully biobased coacervates can synergistically combine the functions of a fungicide carrier and antifungal agent against phytopathogens and guarantee environmental friendliness. This pioneering approach provides deeper insights into synergistically enhancing the effectiveness of agrochemicals from multiple aspects, including fungicide encapsulation, cooperative antifungal action, and droplet deposition.

Carvacrol encapsulation system based on casein-chitosan coacervates: Stability regulation and mechanism of ultrasonication-assisted core-shell microcapsules

Mei Li,Qi Guo,Zhangtong Sun,Yunhui Wang,Zixuan Wang,Sining Du,Henglin Qi,Zhifan Ji,Xubo Zhao

Carvacrol (CAR) is a naturally occurring bioactive compound that is chemically unstable, and microencapsulation technology effectively protects its active components. Casein (CS) and chitosan (CH) were used for the first time as carriers to encapsulate CAR, forming highly stable carvacrol microcapsules (CAR@CS-CH). Under conditions of a 1:1 mass ratio of CS to CH and a pH of 5.5, electrostatic interactions facilitated the formation of aggregates that served as the microcapsule wall to encapsulate CAR. The encapsulation efficiency of CAR@CS-CH was 82.98 ± 0.11 %. Ultrasound enhanced the hydrogen bonding between CAR and the microcapsule wall, reducing the average particle size of CAR@CS-CH to 4.70 μm. The endothermic peak temperature increased from 118.88 °C to 135.50 °C. and after ultrasound treatment, CAR@CS-CH demonstrated high thermal stability at 70 °C. The findings provided technical support for the development of heat-resistant functional foods and highlighted the potential for efficient carvacrol utilization.
