A MoS2 and Graphene Alternately Stacking van der Waals Heterostructure for Li+/Mg2+ Co-Intercalation

Xianbo Yu,Guangyu Zhao,Chao Liu,Canlong Wu,Huihuang Huang,Junjie He,Naiqing Zhang

Owing to the low-cost, dendrite-free formation, and high volumetric capacity, rechargeable Li + /Mg 2+ hybrid-ion batteries (LMIBs) have attracted great attention and are regarded as promising energy storage devices. However, due to the strong Coulombic interaction of Mg 2+ with host materials, the traditional “Daniell Type” LMIBs with only Li + intercalation usually cannot ensure a satisfactory energy density. Herein, graphene monolayers are arranged intercalating into MoS 2 interlamination to construct van der Waals heterostructures (MoS 2 /G VH). This operation transforms the construction of ion channels from pristine interlamination of two MoS 2 monolayers to the interlamination of MoS 2 monolayer with graphene monolayer, thereby greatly reducing ion diffusion energy barriers. Compared with pristine MoS 2 , the MoS 2 /G VH can obviously reduce the migration energy barriers of Li + (from 0.67 to 0.09 eV) and Mg 2+ (from 1.01 to 0.21 eV). Moreover, it is also demonstrated that MoS 2 /G VHs realize Li + /Mg 2+ co-intercalation even at a rate current of 1000 mA g −1 . As expected, the MoS 2 /G VH exhibits superior electrochemical performance with a reversible capacity of 145.8 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 2200 cycles, suggesting the feasibility of potential applications for high-performance energy storage devices.

Novel K2Ti8O17 Anode via Na+/Al3+ Co-Intercalation Mechanism for Rechargeable Aqueous Al-Ion Battery with Superior Rate Capability

Qiangqiang Feng,Yanyan Liu,Jitong Yan,Wei Feng,Shaozheng Ji,Yongfu Tang

A promising aqueous aluminum ion battery (AIB) was assembled using a novel layered K2Ti8O17anode against an activated carbon coated on a Ti mesh cathode in an AlCl3-based aqueous electrolyte. The intercalation/deintercalation mechanism endowed the layered K2Ti8O17as a promising anode for rechargeable aqueous AIBs. NaAc was introduced into the AlCl3aqueous electrolyte to enhance the cycling stability of the assembled aqueous AIB. The as-designed AIB displayed a high discharge voltage near 1.6 V, and a discharge capacity of up to 189.6 mAh g−1. The assembled AIB lit up a commercial light-emitting diode (LED) lasting more than one hour. Inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) were employed to investigate the intercalation/deintercalation mechanism of Na+/Al3+ions in the aqueous AIB. The results indicated that the layered structure facilitated the intercalation/deintercalation of Na+/Al3+ions, thus providing a high-rate performance of the K2Ti8O17anode. The diffusion-controlled electrochemical characteristics and the reduction of Ti4+species during the discharge process illustrated the intercalation/deintercalation mechanism of the K2Ti8O17anode. This study provides not only insight into the charge–discharge mechanism of the K2Ti8O17anode but also a novel strategy to design rechargeable aqueous AIBs.Keywords:aluminum ion battery;K2Ti8O17anode;discharge–charge mechanism

Optimized Proton Assistance of Ni-Intercalated Bilayer Vanadate Cathode for High-Performance Aqueous Manganese Storage

Yunbo Li,Yan Jin,Lingyi Ding,Yucheng Zhu,Hongyan Zhou,Qinghua Fan,Youzhong Dong,Quan Kuang,Yanming Zhao

Mn metal has become a highly promising candidate anode of aqueous batteries due to its high abundance, non-toxicity, relatively low redox potential, and large theoretical capacity. However, the development of Mn ion batteries (MIBs) is hindered by controversies over reaction mechanisms, metal hydrogen evolution reactions, and poor conversion efficiency. Therefore, a further comprehensive study is urgently desired for its research and application. In this work, a V 2 O 5 bilayer structure is innovatively constructed by introducing stripping agents (H 2 O and Ni 2+ ) to form stable “Ni─O” columns, which not only enhances the stability of the structure but also effectively blocks interlayer corrosion. The preferential orientation and the excellent interlayer spacing d (001) = 10.28 Å broads Mn 2+ diffusion channels. In this way, the sites for ion storage are also increased by creating abundant vacancies, accelerating the diffusion rate of ions in the modified V 2 O 5 (Ni 0.48 V 2 O 5 •0.90H 2 O, NiVO) lattice. The co-storage mechanism of Mn 2+ /H + ions effectively alleviates the limitations of high charge density and large solvation ion radius. Furthermore, the storage mechanism and structural evolution process are investigated via analytical chemistry. These findings provide new ideas for designing new positive electrode materials and effectively promote the progress of the MIB research and application.

MnO2 superstructure cathode with boosted zinc ion intercalation for aqueous zinc ion batteries

Aina Zhang,Xu Zhang,Hainan Zhao,Helmut Ehrenberg,Gang Chen,Ismael Saadoune,Qiang Fu,Yingjin Wei,Yizhan Wang

The simultaneous intercalation of protons and Zn 2+ ions in aqueous electrolytes presents a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) for large-scale use, a challenge that has yet to be overcome. To address this, we have developed a MnO 2 /tetramethylammonium (TMA) superstructure with an enlarged interlayer spacing, designed specifically to control H + /Zn 2+ co-intercalation in AZIBs. Within this superstructure, the pre-intercalated TMA + ions work as spacers to stabilize the layered structure of MnO 2 cathodes and expand the interlayer spacing substantially by 28 % to 0.92 nm. Evidence from in operando pH measurements, in operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that the enlarged interlayer spacing facilitates the diffusion and intercalation of Zn 2+ ions (which have a large ionic radius) into the MnO 2 cathodes. This spacing also helps suppress the competing H + intercalation and the formation of detrimental Zn 4 (OH) 6 SO 4 ·5H 2 O, thereby enhancing the structural stability of MnO 2 . As a result, enhanced Zn 2+ storage properties, including excellent capacity and long cycle stability, are achieved.

Dual defects boosting zinc ion storage of hierarchical vanadium oxide fibers

Zanyu Chen,Jiugang Hu,Shijun Liu,Hongshuai Hou,Guoqiang Zou,Wentao Deng,Xiaobo Ji

Vanadium oxides are considered as promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc ions batteries (AZIBs). However, the long diffusion distance, low diffusion coefficient, and strong electrostatic interactions with divalent Zn 2+ in bulk vanadium oxide restrict their practical application. In this work, vanadium oxide nanofibers with physical and chemical defects were facilely   fabricated by electrospinning for the application in AZIBs. The hierarchical framework exhibits structure stability during insertion/ extraction processes of zinc ions, and the extracted zinc ions are easily confined in the caverns of porous fibers to shorten the diffusion paths. Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction mechanism was verified by using in situ Raman and ex situ XPS and HRTEM, demonstrating a co-insertion mechanism of zinc ions and H + . The cathode shows a fast activation process, exhibiting a high capacity of 256 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and the capacity fading of only 17% is observed after 1000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . The outstanding electrochemical performances and efficient Zn 2+ transportation can be attributed to the synergism of physical and chemical defects. This strategy of dual defects may provide new insights into the improvements of AZIBs performance.

Intercalation Behavior of a Spiro-bipyrrolidinium Cation into a Graphite Electrode from Dimethyl/Propylene Carbonates

Jiaxing Qi,Hongyu Wang,Guobao Xu

Quaternary ammonium–graphite intercalation compounds (QA+–GICs) are promising negative electrode materials in dual-carbon batteries by virtue of safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the intercalation behavior of QA+ into graphite electrodes in mixed solvents has never been reported. Herein, spiro-(1,1′)-bipyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate dissolved in a dimethyl/propylene carbonate (DMC/PC) binary solvent system was employed in graphite/activated carbon (AC) capacitors. The storage behavior of the spiro-(1,1′)-bipyrrolidinium cation into graphite is very related to the solvent composition of the electrolyte solutions. In situ X-ray diffraction tests revealed that the graphite electrodes can form different QA+–GICs during cycling, which is a key factor influencing the electrochemical performance of graphite/AC capacitors. Besides, the reversible thickness change of graphite in graphite/AC capacitors with different electrolytes during the charge–discharge process was also addressed. These findings provide sound evidence for the co-intercalation of the solvent with the cation.

Electrochemical characterization of hollow urchin-like MnO2 as high-performance cathode for aqueous zinc ion batteries

Jing Wu,Xiaowei Chi,Yunzhao Liu,Jianhua Yang,Yu Liu

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) based on MnO 2 cathode and Zn anode has attracted an increased attention for energy storage for their low cost, high safety and environmental friendliness . However, the essentially poor conductivity and unstable structure change of MnO 2 cathode during electrochemical reaction usually lead to low discharge capacity and rapid fading for AZIBs. To alleviate these problems, a hollow urchin-like MnO 2 was synthesized by a modified one-step hydrothermal method . The as-proposed unique morphology with large surface can effectively shorten the ion diffusion distance and alleviate the collapse of the structure. The urchin-like MnO 2 cathode shows a high reversible specific capacity of 324.9 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 (0.32C). Meanwhile, a long-term stability up to 5000 cycles with a retained capacity of 124 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 1.5 A g −1 (5C) is obtained, which is obviously superior to a common spherical MnO 2 . Ex-situ analysis reveals a H + and Zn 2+ co-insertion reaction mechanism for the as-obtained cathode. The remarkably electrochemical performance suggests the hollow urchin-like MnO 2 a promising cathode for AZIBs.

A Facile and Efficient Chemical Prelithiation of Graphite for Full Capacity Utilization of Li-Ion Batteries

Yang Luo,Yicheng Deng,Yifei Shen,Hui Li,Yuliang Cao,Xinping Ai

Chemical prelithiation is considered to be a facile and efficient strategy to compensate the initial irreversible capacity loss of anode materials for achieving full capacity utilization of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, most of the prelithiation reagents reported so far are difficult to apply for commercially used graphite (Gr) anode due to their higher redox potentials than the formation potential of graphite–lithium compounds and the co-intercalation behavior in the interlayers of Gr anode, causing the exfoliation and destruction of Gr structure during prelithiation process. Herein, a new prelithiation solution for Gr anode by using lithium naphthalenide as a lithiation reagent and 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran as a reduction-tolerant solvent is demonstrated. This prelithiation solution has a very low redox potential of 0.19 V and can controllably and efficiently prelithiate Gr anode to a required degree in a few minutes without the solvent co-intercalation. Benefiting from these advantages, the Gr anode prelithiated for 3 min exhibits a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 100%, a better rate capability, and higher cycling capacity retention than conventional pristine Gr anode. Particularly, this prelithiation solution is low cost, easily synthesized, and recycled for industrial production, thus offering a practical convenience for LIBs manufacture.

Research of the transition from a aqueous zinc ion battery to an aqueous hydrogen proton battery triggered by the Cu@Cu31S16 cathode material development

Zhenyu Hu,Li Lin,Yi Jiang,Lianshan Sun,Qingshuang Wang,Jianxun Zhao,Peng Chen,Xinwei Wang,Heng Liu,Wanqiang Liu,Chunpeng Yang,Fang Wang,Wei Liu

The aqueous zinc ion battery (AZIB) has been widely studied due to its rapid kinetics and high specific capacity attributed to the chemical insertion of H + protons. However, the current research landscape lacks comprehensive investigations into copper-based sulfide materials and the intricate co-embedding/extraction mechanism of H + /Zn 2+ . In this study, we employed an innovative in-situ etching method to synthesize a current collector-integrated Cu@Cu 31 S 16 cathode material. Cu 31 S 16 not only exhibits excellent stability and conductivity but also activates proton insertion chemistry. Consequently, we have demonstrated, for the first time, efficient and reversible co-embedding/extraction behavior of H + /Zn 2+ in Zn-Cu 31 S 16 batteries. Specifically, owing to the lower charging and discharging plateaus of zinc ions (0.65 V, 0.45 V) compared to H + (0.97 V, 0.84 V) in Zn-Cu 31 S 16 batteries, two distinct plateaus were observed. Moreover, we delved into the mechanism of ion co-embedding/extraction by exploring different ions (Zn 2+ , H + /Zn 2+ , H + ) within varying voltage ranges. This exploration led to the development of three types of ion batteries, where Zn 2+ , H + /Zn 2+ , and H + exhibit co-embedding/extraction within voltage ranges of 0.3–0.9 V, 0.3–1.05 V, and 0.5–1.05 V, respectively. These batteries have achieved impressive performance with specific capacities of 282.74 mAh g −1 , 587.4 mAh g −1 and 687.3 mAh g −1 , respectively. Introducing the concept of “Voltage-Selective Ion Co-Embedding/Extraction”, this study broadens the research scope of AZIBs . This research not only offers a feasible solution and theoretical guidance for future proton batteries but also underscores the tremendous potential of AHPB.

Kinetics regulation in yarn-shaped Zn-ammonium vanadate batteries by sodium-ion and polyaniline co-intercalation and carbon nanotube intermediate layer

Xianhong Zheng,Jinhao Tang,Qiaole Hu,Zongqian Wang,Zhi Liu,Changlong Li,Xiaoshuang Zhou,Ying Zhang,Hao Jia

Flexible yarn-shaped aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) show great promise for wearable and portable energy devices due to their low cost, small volume, flexibility, and compatibility with textiles. However, challenges such as low capacity and energy density due to sluggish Zn 2+ ion kinetics prevent their practical applications in wearable electronics. Herein, we develop a strategy involving Na + ions and polyaniline co-intercalation, along with coaxially wrapping, to fabricate yarn-shaped AZIBs containing core-sheath carbon nanotube/Na + ion and polyaniline co-intercalated NH 4 V 4 O 10 (NaNVO-PANI) yarn cathode and zinc wire anode. The NaNVO-PANI structure enhances electrochemical performance by enlarging interlayer spacing and improving electronic conductivity. The resulting yarn batteries exhibit high specific capacity (346.9 mA h g −1 ), energy density (255.2 Wh kg −1 ), and long cycling life, making them suitable for self-powered energy systems. Notably, the CNT sheet sheath enables tunable charge storage kinetics by accelerating ion mixing between the electrolyte fluid and electrode interface through turbulence effects. This work is of great significance for developing high-performance flexible yarn-shaped AZIBs for wearable electronics.

Hexafluorophosphate Anion Intercalation into Graphite Electrodes from Propylene Carbonate/Gamma-Butyrolactone Solutions

Dandan Zhu,Hongyu Wang

The PF6– intercalation behavior of graphite positive electrodes has been investigated in the solutions of 1 M LiPF6–propylene carbonate (PC)/gamma-butyrolactone (GBL). Conventional electrochemical tests including galvanostatic charge–discharge and cyclic voltammetry are conducted on Li/graphite cells to assess the anion storage capability of the graphite electrode in these solutions. We find an abnormal undulation of capacity with the rise in GBL content. Ex situ and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements are performed on graphite electrodes to identify the co-intercalating solvents and stage transitions. The intercalation of the anion cosolvated by both GBL and PC into the graphite electrode has been discovered at low GBL contents. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic studies on the solutions are carried out to evaluate interactions between ions and solvents inside. The intercalation behavior of the anion in the graphite electrode is correlated with the solvation environments of the solution.

Intercalation Behavior of Tetrafluoroborate Anion in a Graphite Electrode from Mixed Cyclic Carbonates

Shufang Zhao,Yuhao Huang,Yunju Wang,Dandan Zhu,Lei Zhang,Hongyu Wang

In a dual-ion battery with an electrolyte solution, the anion storage behavior of graphite positive electrode is heavily dependent on anion solvation. In 1 M LiBF4 solutions dissolved in cyclic carbonates including ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, butylene carbonate, and their mixtures, the performance of graphite positive electrode is investigated by traditional electrochemical tests in conjunction with ex situ and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterizations. The intimate correlation between the storage capacity of tetrafluoroborate anion in the graphite electrode and electrolyte solution’s composition has been found. Graphite intercalation compounds based on various types of solvated tetrafluoroborate anion have been identified. From the solutions based on carbonate mixtures, the co-intercalation of different carbonate species together with the anion has been discovered. The preferential affinity between the anion and ethylene carbonate is disclosed.
