Investigation on co-gasification of N-rich fiberboard and glucose: Nitrogen evolution and changes in char properties

Ming Zhao,Jun Sun,Muhammad Asif Akhtar,Shu Zhang,Juntao Wei,Deliang Xu,Xun Hu,Mortaza Gholizadeh,Hong Zhang

Waste wood-based panels (WBPs) with high nitrogen content is a typical kind of industrial biomass waste, and a large amount of NO x will be generated during its incineration treatment. Therefore, this work is aimed at studying the retention and conversion characteristics of nitrogen in gasification char of WBPs. For fixing more nitrogen in char, co-gasification experiments of fiberboard (FB, the main kind of WBPs) and glucose were carried out using a fixed bed reactor , and the subsequent analysis was conducted by element analyzer, XPS , SEM and BET. The results show that the addition of glucose could efficiently fix nitrogen in gasification char , the nitrogen retention ratios of FB-glucose char under N 2 and CO 2 atmosphere were 2.6–5.6 times and 1.4–2.0 times greater than that of individual FB char, respectively, due to the enhanced Maillard reaction. As the temperature increased, the portions of N-5 and N-6 decreased along with the formation of N-Q and N–O. Moreover, the addition of glucose led to the delay of the conversion from N-5 and N-6 to N-Q and N–O in char. BET results demonstrate that the surface area and total pore volume of co-gasified char were significantly lower than those of individual FB gasified char. The glucose had a negative effect on the pore structure development of co-gasified char. These results could offer strategies on reducing NO x emission in biomass thermal conversion and regulating nitrogen functional groups in biochar.

Synergistic effects of biomass components and coal co-gasification: insights from thermogravimetric and reactor analysis

Li Wangliang,Fang Yi,Chang Shengqiang,Mi Shuzhen,Zhao Shengyong

Co-gasification of biomass and coal offers a strategic approach to enhance the sustainability of energy resources by exploiting the inherent synergies between various biomass components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) and coal. This study investigates the co-gasification in a downdraft fixed-bed reactor, focusing on the impacts on gas yield, calorific value, and carbon structure transformations. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed parameter-specific effects of biomass components during gasification. At a 50 wt% blending ratio, cellulose significantly enhances gasification, increasing calorific value and CO production beyond theoretical predictions. In contrast, lignin inclusion at a 70 wt% ratio decreases the calorific value and CO production by 6.44% and 11.21%, respectively. Additionally, hemicellulose is found to catalytically enhance CO 2 conversion, with a maximum increase of 45.99% at a 70 wt% ratio. The study elucidates the differential impacts of each biomass component on the co-gasification process and underscores the potential of optimizing biomass blends to maximize the efficiency and sustainability of energy production.

Enriched Phosphate of Soil Utilization from Modified Agricultural Waste Hydrochars and Their Potential as a Heavy Metal Stabilizer

Huiwen Zhang,Runhao Zhang,Wenya Li,Shiying Pan,Ming Li

Large amounts of agricultural waste that are not properly disposed of will result in resource wastage and environmental pollution. Herein, a series of agricultural waste hydrochars (AWHs) were prepared from hydrothermal cogasification of rice husk and chicken manure and used as a phosphorus (P) and heavy metal (HM) stabilizer for improving soil quality. Crop growth could be promoted at 1% AWH addition. AWH-V provided a renewable alternative for poor and hardening soil, and the available phosphorus effectively increased from 29 to 85 mg/kg. AWH-III was especially suitable for application in Cd-contaminated soil. The accumulation of Cd in crops also decreased by 46.10% under HM stress. An increased abundance of HM-tolerant rhizosphere microbial communities combined with adsorption of AWHs promoted HM passivation and stabilization. Interaction effects on phosphate and HMs could be summarized as competitive adsorption, cation and anion balance, and P & HM retention. This work provides a promising multiobjective pathway for agricultural waste management, soil quality improvement, and crop growth promotion.

Effect of biomass ash addition on coal ash fusion process under CO2 atmosphere

Yu-hong Qin,Min-min Feng,Zi-bing Zhao,Stanislav V. Vassilev,Jie Feng,Christina G. Vassileva,Wen-ying Li

The ash fusion process of Jincheng anthracite ash, rice straw ash and coal-biomass ashes with different rice straw ash addition ratios during co-gasification under CO 2 atmosphere was elucidated by the ash fusion test, chemical analyses, optical heating stage microscopy (OHSM), X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer. Results showed that the initial sintering and initial melting temperatures of coal-biomass ashes observed by OHSM decreased with the addition of rice straw ash. The deformation temperatures determined by the ash fusion test were close to the initial melting temperatures. The biomass ash addition to coal ash introduced excessive amounts of alkaline compounds in the ash mixtures that led to lower initial temperatures of liquid phase formation. The ash fusion behavior of coal-biomass ashes with a rice straw ash addition ≤3 wt% was similar to that of coal ash and fits to the “softening-melting” ash fusion mechanism. In contrast, the ash fusion behavior of coal-biomass ashes with a greater addition of rice straw ash (>3 wt%) experienced dramatic changes at lower temperature and fits to the ‘‘melting-dissolution’’ ash fusion mechanism.

Ca12Al14O33 or MgO supported Ni-carbide slag bi-functional materials for H2 production and CO2 capture in sorption-enhanced steam gasification of cellulose/polyethylene mixture

Yuzhuo Wang,Yingjie Li,Liguo Yang,Xiaoxu Fan,Leizhe Chu

Co-gasification of biomass and waste plastics is a promising technology for H 2 production. In this work, Ni-CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 and Ni-CaO-MgO bi-functional materials were prepared from carbide slag for H 2 production in sorption-enhanced steam gasification experiments of cellulose/polyethylene mixtures. The H 2 production and CO 2 capture performances of Ni-CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 and Ni-CaO-MgO in sorption-enhanced steam gasification of cellulose/polyethylene were studied and compared. Density functional theory calculations, including the density of states, electron differential densities, and adsorption energies were performed to investigate the effect of supports on the stability and reactivity of Ni-CaO-based bifunctional materials at a microscopic level. The results exhibit that polyethene contributes to improving the H 2 production effectiveness of cellulose sorption-enhanced steam gasification, the optimum mass ratio of cellulose to polyethene is 0.5:0.5. The CO 2 capture capacity, H 2 yield, and H 2 concentration using Ni-CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 can be respectively 2.0, 2.6, and 1.4 times as high as those using Ni-CaO-MgO in the 20th cycle, which indicates the higher cyclic stability and catalytic activity of Ni-CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 . Density functional theory results also indicate that Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 can better retain the stable structure of Ni-CaO-based materials, which is consistent with the experimental results. Compared with MgO, Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 is a better framework for Ni-CaO-based bifunctional material for H 2 production in the sorption-enhanced steam gasification process.

Effects of Secondary Reactions on the Destruction of Cellulose-Derived Volatiles during Biomass/Coal Co-gasification

Zhen-Yi Du,Xia Wang,Yu-Hong Qin,Zhi-Hua Zhang,Jie Feng,Wen-Ying Li

The purpose of this study was to reveal the structural evolution of cellulose-derived tars in the biomass/coal co-gasification environment. A two-stage reactor was employed, where the pyrolytic vapors of cellulose were produced in the top stage and the secondary reactions of these vapors took place in the bottom stage under a range of conditions. The roles of anthracite char and steam were examined by implementing three operational modes in the bottom stage: thermal cracking (TC), catalytic cracking (CC), and catalytic reforming (CR), over a temperature range from 600 to 900 °C. Anthracite char was effective in enhancing tar reduction at lower temperatures (≤700 °C), above which its effect diminished. Tar yields under the CC and CR modes were comparable in the studied temperature range, suggesting the minimum effects of steam on the tar amount. However, gel permeation chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (GPC–DAD) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) characterization of tars showed that both anthracite char and steam had significant influence on the composition of tar, in terms of the molecular weight distribution and aromatic cluster sizes. Specifically, at a high temperature (900 °C), the presence of anthracite char facilitated the reduction of aromatic compounds, especially those with larger aromatic ring systems (≥3 fused benzene rings). In addition, the used anthracite chars showed lowered specific surface areas, which was postulated to be the main reason for their slightly reduced gasification reactivity.
