Tea saponin (TS), a kind of biodegradable surfactant, was chosen to improve the accessible solubilization of pyrene and cadmium (Cd) in co-contaminated soils cultivated Lolium multiflorum . TS obviously improved the accessibility of pyrene and Cd for L. multiflorum to accelerate the process of accumulation and elimination of the pollutants. The chemical forms of Cd was transformed from Fe-Mn oxides and associated to carbonates fractions into exchangeable fractions by adding TS in single Cd and pyrene-Cd contaminated soils. Moreover, the chemical forms of pyrene were transformed from associated fraction into bioaccessible fraction by adding TS in pyrene and pyrene-Cd contaminated soils. In pyrene-Cd contaminated soil, the exchangeable fraction of Cd was hindered in the existence of pyrene, and bioaccessible fraction of pyrene was promoted by the cadmium. Besides, in the process of the pyrene degradation and Cd accumulation, the effect could be improved by the elongation of roots with adding TS, and the microorganism activity was stimulated by TS to accelerate the removal of pollutions. Therefore, Planting L. multiflorum combined with adding TS would be an effective method on the phytoremediation of organics and heavy metals co-contaminated soils.

Microorganisms capable of simultaneously remediating heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution hold significant importance in bioremediation efforts. In this study, we investigated the ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa AO-4 to simultaneously degrade phenanthrene (PHE) and reduce Cr (VI). Specifically, it has the ability to reduce 100 % of Cr (VI) (30 mg/L) while degrading 43.8 % of PHE (50 mg/L). In batch experiments, it was observed that the presence of Cr (VI) can enhance the degradation of PHE by strain AO-4. The solubility of PHE in soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) was found to be related to the initial concentration of Cr (VI), which could explain why Cr (VI) promotes the degradation of PHE. Additionally, XPS analysis confirmed that Cr (VI) was reduced to Cr (III) with S-EPS produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa AO-4. GC–MS analysis was conducted to analyze the degradation metabolites of phenanthrene, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and 2TMS derivatives of salicylic acid were detected, indicating that Pseudomonas aeruginosa AO-4 is capable of degrading phenanthrene through two distinct pathways. These findings demonstrate the potential of Pseudomonas aeruginosa AO-4 in the treatment of co-contamination scenarios involving PAHs and HMs.

Chemical stabilization is frequently used to stabilize lead (Pb) or arsenate (As), but faces challenges in Pb-As co-contaminated soils because of the antagonistic reactions between chemical stabilizers and contaminants. In this work, we innovated an effective and cost-efficient stepwise steam flash heating (SSFH) strategy to simultaneously immobilize Pb and As, and unraveled the underlying mechanisms. The combination of 1.5 % Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 and 2 % Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 only decreased 1.99 % Pb by toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP-Pb) but increased 17.8 % of TCLP-As due to the antagonistic effects. SSFH with Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 in the first step and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 in the second step achieved the minimal TCLP-Pb and TCLP-As of 0.778 and 0.327 mg/L, respectively. It also reduced 69.8 % of leachable As in 100-year acid rain simulation, indicating a favorable long-term stabilization performance. Additionally, SSFH approach reduced 43.2 % stabilizer dosage and 14.9 % cost. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) documented that the stepwise SFH promoted the transformation of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 and NaAsO 2 /NaAsO 3 /As 2 O 3 /As 2 O 5 into stable Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and FeAsO 4 , preventing the formation of AsO 4 3- and FePO 4 . Our findings proved the state-of-the-art SSFH approach and unraveled its mechanisms to stabilize Pb and As co-contamination in soils, offering a green and sustainable remediation alternative for the management of heavy metal contaminated sites. Environmental implication A novel stepwise SFH approach can be applied to overcome the stabilizer antagonist effects by separately immobilizing Pb and As in two sequential steps. It also decreased 43.2 % of stabilizer dosage and 14.9 % of cost comparing to conventional chemical stabilization. This approach can be used for other metal co-contaminated soils facing similar antagonistic challenges, and our work raises a state-of-the-art solution for cost-effective, green and sustainable remediation practices.

Nonylphenol (NP) and cadmium (Cd), very toxic to microorganisms , plants, and animals, are often detected simultaneously in soil and water. Selenium (Se) is important to microorganisms and plants. A pot experiment was carried out to explore the effect of Se on the efficiency of ryegrass in the remediation of NP-Cd co-contaminated soil. The removal rate of soil NP and Cd increased by 6.2 % and 30.8 %, respectively, with the application of exogenous Se in NP-contaminated soil (50 mg·kg −1 ). The selenium significantly increased the catalase activity (11.5–24.5%), but decreased the activities of acid phosphatase (5.5–9.0 %), invertase (19.8–22.5 %), and urease (11.1–18.4 %) in NP contaminated soil (50 mg·kg −1 ) ( p <0.05). The selenium also increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, including Massilia , Burkholderiaceae , Micrococcales, and Sphingomonas in the NP-Cd co-contaminated soil. These bacteria are closely related to Cd and NP pollution remediation. In summary, applying Se to the contaminated soil effectively improved the efficiency of the phytoremediation of NP and Cd, and also increased the relative abundance and diversity of microorganisms in the NP-Cd co-contaminated soil. These findings can attract practical interest in phytoremediation measures of organic and heavy metals co-contaminated soil.

Sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) has gained considerable attention in groundwater remediation on account of its remarkable reactivity, but there is limited research on simultaneous removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) by S-nZVI, and the effects of different sulfidation methods (co-sulfidation and post-sulfidation method) and sulfur agents (i.e., Na 2 S 2 O 4 , Na 2 S) on its simultaneous removal performance remains unclear. Herein, four types of S-nZVI particles (S-nZVI co -Na 2 S 2 O 4 , S-nZVI post -Na 2 S 2 O 4 , S-nZVI co -Na 2 S, S-nZVI post -Na 2 S) were synthesized using different sulfidation methods and sulfur agents, and their performances in TCE-Cr(VI) co-removal were systematically compared. For S-nZVI co , the removal of TCE is almost higher than that of S-nZVI post due to higher hydrophobicity, regardless of the presence or absence of Cr(VI). However, in TCE-Cr(VI) co-contamination, Cr(VI) can significantly passivate S-nZVI co -Na 2 S 2 O 4 , as FeCr 2 S 4 with poor conductivity was generated on the surface of the material, reducing its electron transfer ability. The removal of TCE by S-nZVI co -Na 2 S 2 O 4 decreased from 100 % (without Cr(VI)) to 53 % (with 40 mg/L Cr(VI)). In addition to higher Fe 0 content and relatively high hydrophobicity, S-nZVI co -Na 2 S has a higher specific surface area and proportion of S 2− species compared to S-nZVI co -Na 2 S 2 O 4 , exhibiting a greater advantage for Cr(VI) removal. Besides, there were only reduced sulfur species in S-nZVI co -Na 2 S, improving its reducing capacity. Therefore, S-nZVI co -Na 2 S had the highest TCE removal and Cr(VI) removal in the co-contamination, reaching 85 % and 100 %, respectively. These results suggest that S-nZVI co -Na 2 S has the potential to achieve simultaneous removal of TCE-Cr(VI) and suitable materials can be designed for the specific types of groundwater contamination.

Phytoremediation may be used for remediation of cocontaminated soil with heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the low bioavailability of heavy metals and PAHs in soils may have adverse effects on the efficiency of phytoremediation; it is necessary to find an effective method for simultaneously improving bioavailability of PAHs and heavy metals in cocontaminated soils. In this study, a novel aspartic acid-β-cyclodextrin (ACD) was synthesized, the structural characteristics of ACD were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, and the complexation of fluorene (Flu) and cadmium (Cd) with ACD was studied. Pot culture experiments were conducted to investigate effects of ACD on phytoremediation of soil cocontaminated with Flu and Cd. Results showed that ACD could enhance uptake of Flu and Cd in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), and removal percentages of Flu and Cd in planted soil with ACD increased from 45.78% and 25.62% to 66.96% and 34.88%, respectively. Biological activity of planted soils with ACD was obviously higher than that of planted soils without ACD, which resulted in improvement of phytoremediation efficiency. As a promising remediation strategy, ACD-assisted phytoremediation may be a feasible technology for simultaneous removal of PAHs and heavy metals in cocontaminated soils.

The effects of combined exposure to perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and heavy metals (HMs) including cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) on earthworms ( Eisenia fetida ) were investigated. The results have demonstrated that the concentrations of labile acid exchangeable Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, and Cu in soil were enhanced in addition of PFAAs. With PFAAs, the uptake of Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, and Cu in earthworms was increased compared to those without PFAAs with the order of Cd > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cu. In the presence of HMs, the average biota-to-soil accumulation factors (BSAFs) of PFAAs in earthworms were decreased by 0.498–0.729 times for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 0.606–0.978 times for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), indicating decrease rates of PFOS were higher than those of PFOA. And different levels of HMs led to insignificant different responses on the inhibiting effects of PFAAs uptake in earthworms. The increase of Cd in fraction C (associated with cytosol) and decrease of PFAAs in fraction C and fraction P (associated with tissue fragments, cell membranes, and intact cells) especially for fraction C were revealed when they were combined, suggesting cytosolic PFAAs and Cd were susceptibly mutual effected. This study indicated that PFAAs and metals mutually affected their bioaccumulation and subcellular distribution in earthworms, which will help to understand the fate and risks of PFAAs and metals in co-contaminated soil.

Co-contamination of organic pollutants and heavy metals is universal in the natural environment. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a typical plasticizer , frequently coexists with cadmium (Cd) in nature. However, little attention has been given to the impacts of co-contamination by DBP and Cd on microbial communities or the responses of microbes. To address this, a microcosm experiment was conducted by supplying the exogenous DBP-degrading bacterium Glutamicibacter nicotianae ZM05 to investigate the interplay among DBP-Cd co-contamination, the exogenous DBP-degrading bacterium G. nicotianae ZM05, and indigenous microorganisms . To adapt to co-contamination stress, microbial communities adjust their diversity, interactions, and functions. The stability of the microbial community decreased under co-contamination, as evidenced by lower diversity, simpler network, and fewer ecological niches . Microbial interactions were strengthened, as evidenced by enriched pathways related to microbial communications. Meanwhile, interactions between microorganisms enhanced the environmental fitness of the exogenous DBP-degrading bacterium ZM05. Based on co-occurrence network prediction and coculture experiments, metabolic interactions between the non-DBP-degrading bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans ZM16 and ZM05 were proven. Strain ZM16 utilized protocatechuic acid, a DBP downstream metabolite, to relieve acid inhibition and adsorbed Cd to relieve toxic stress. These findings help to explain the responses of bacterial and fungal communities to DBP-Cd co-contamination and provide new insights for the construction of degrading consortia for bioremediation.

There is a lack of knowledge on the biodegradation mechanisms of benzene and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), representative compounds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), under individually and mixed contaminated soils. Therefore, a set of microcosm experiments were conducted to explore the influence of benzene and BaP on biodegradation under individual and mixed contaminated condition, and their subsequent influence on native microbial consortium. The results revealed that the total mass loss of benzene was 56.0% under benzene and BaP mixed contamination, which was less than that of individual benzene contamination (78.3%). On the other hand, the mass loss of BaP was slightly boosted to 17.6% under the condition of benzene mixed contamination with BaP from that of individual BaP contamination (14.4%). The significant differences between the microbial and biocide treatments for both benzene and BaP demonstrated that microbial degradation played a crucial role in the mass loss for both contaminants. In addition, the microbial analyses revealed that the contamination of benzene played a major role in the fluctuations of microbial compositions under co-contaminated conditions. Rhodococcus, Nocardioides, Gailla, and norank_c_ Gitt-GS-136 performed a major role in benzene biodegradation under individual and mixed contaminated conditions while Rhodococcus, Noviherbaspirillum, and Phenylobacterium were highly involved in BaP biodegradation. Moreover, binary benzene and BaP contamination highly reduced the Rhodococcus abundance, indicating the toxic influence of co-contamination on the functional key genus. Enzymatic activities revealed that catalase, lipase, and dehydrogenase activities proliferated while polyphenol oxidase was reduced with contamination compared to the control treatment. These results provided the fundamental information to facilitate the development of more efficient bioremediation strategies, which can be tailored to specific remediation of different contamination scenarios.

In this study, a set of comprehensive experiments were conducted to explore the effects of temperature on the biodegradation, bioavailability , and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by thermally enhanced biodegradation (TEB) under benzene and BaP co-contaminated conditions. The biodegradation rates of benzene increased from 57.4% to 88.7% and 84.9%, and the biodegradation efficiency of BaP was enhanced from 15.8% to 34.6% and 28.6%, when the temperature was raised from the ambient temperature of 15 °C to 45 °C and 30 °C, respectively. In addition, the bioavailability analysis results demonstrated that the water- and butanol-extractable BaP increased with elevated temperatures. High enzymatic activities and PAH-RHD α gene in gram-positive bacteria favored the long-term elevated temperatures (30 and 45 °C) compared to gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, ROS species (O 2 •− and •OH) generation was detected which were scavenged by the increased superoxide dismutase and catalase activities at elevated temperatures. Soil properties (pH, TOC , moisture, total iron, Fe 3+ , and Fe 2+ ) were affected by the temperature treatments, revealing that metal-organic-associated reactions occurred during the TEB of benzene–BaP co-contamination. The results concluded that biodegradation of benzene–BaP co-contamination was greatly improved at 45 °C and that microbial activities enhanced the biodegradation under TEB via the increased bioavailability and generation and degradation of ROS.

Bioaugmentation helps to obtain a microbiome capable of remediating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, acclimation of microorganisms to soil supplemented with phenanthrene (PHE) led to enrichment with PAH-degraders, including those in Actinobacteriota and in the genera Streptomyces , Rhodococcus , Nocardioides , Sphingomonas , and Mycobacterium . Aqueous (28 °C, pH 6.5) and soil cultures inoculated with PHE-acclimated soil showed a high PHE (ca. 50 mg L −1 ) degradation efficiency. The PHE degradation kinetics in aqueous and soil incubations fitted to the Gompertz equation and the first-order kinetic equation, respectively. Indigenous microorganisms adapted to PHE in their environment, and this increased their capacity to degrade PHE. The effect of co-contaminants and pathway intermediates on PHE degradation showed that the degradation of PHE improved in the presence of diesel while being hindered by lubricant oil, catechol, salicylic and phthalic acid. Our findings provide theoretical and practical support for bioremediationof PAHs in the environment.
