Dosing effect of nano zero valent iron (NZVI) on the dark hydrogen fermentation performance via lake algae and food waste co-digestion

Mingxing Zhao,Ziyi Liu,Jin Xu,He Liu,Xiaohu Dai,Sai Gu,Wenquan Ruan

The effect of nano zero valent iron (NZVI) on hydrogen production by the co-digestion of dry lake algae and food waste was investigated. The results showed that 10 mg.gTS −1 addition of NZVI improved the performance of the co-digestion system, with the cumulative hydrogen increased by 29.20% to 40.04 mL.gVS −1 , compared to that of the control. However, the cumulative hydrogen yield decreased to 14.77 and 5.37 mL.gVS −1 when the NZVI dosage was increased to 20 and 40 mg.gTS −1 , respectively. The oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of the reaction system was decreased dramatically to -331 ∼ ∼ -490 mV at the initial reaction stage. The degradation rates of carbohydrate and protein also reached their peaks at the NZVI dosage of 10 mg.gTS −1 . The concentration of end product in the liquid phase and the dehydrogenase activity was first increased then decreased when enhancing the NZVI dosage. Analysis of the transmission electron microscopy images revealed that excessive NZVI dosage could destroy the cells of microorganisms.

Genome-Centric Metagenomics and Metaproteomics Profiled the Shared and Unique Taxa in Isomeric Fatty Acid-Differentiated Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Food Waste and Sludge

Xu Duan,Haowen Duan,Chunxia Zhao,Leiyu Feng,Guohua Zhao,Yinguang Chen

Fatty acids (FAs)-involving structures, widely occurring in production and life, have been increasingly considered as major feedstocks and potential platforms for renewable energy generation. However, the role of isomeric FAs (particularly trans-FAs) in high-concerned energy-reserving technology represented by anaerobic digestion (AD) remains unclear. This study displayed that trans-oleic acid (TOA, 10 mg/L) significantly increased methane production by 56% during the codigestion of food waste and sludge, whereas the same concentration of cis-oleic acid (COA) led to a slight 20% increase. Genome-centric meta-omics and biochemical tests indicated that acidogenic taxa that harbor and express distinct functions in the cell envelopes were primarily responsible for TOA/COA-differentiated AD. Four shared taxa, including three monodermal acidogens and one hydrogenotrophic methanogen, were common drivers of both TOA- and COA-enhanced AD, resulting in stronger acidification and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis than in the control bioreactor without oleic acid. In addition to four shared species, two unique didermal acidogens were specific drivers of TOA-enhanced AD, demonstrating more robust acidification compared to that of COA-enhanced AD. This study profiled the geometry-dependent effects of isomeric FAs on AD, providing new insights into targeted regulation for energy conservation and decarbonization of FAs-involving feedstocks.

Enhanced Methane Generation from Anaerobic Tridigestion of Organic Solid Wastes by Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer Stimulation

Pengcheng Li,Ziyi Liu,Mingxing Zhao,Hengfeng Miao,Wansheng Shi,Zhenxing Huang,Wenquan Ruan

One of the major challenges of anaerobic codigestion (AcoD) treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) is the low efficiency of electron transfer between syntrophic bacteria and methanogens. In this study, an effective strategy to improve the methanogenesis efficiency during tridigestion of food waste (FW), kitchen waste (KW), and fruit/vegetable waste (FVW), via adding magnetite to promote direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), was proposed. The results showed that the accumulative methane yield increased with the addition of magnetite and the maximum cumulative methane yield was 592.56 mL/gVS at the dosage of 6 g/L and was 31.97% higher than control. Magnetite significantly accelerated the degradation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), such as acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. Electrochemical measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses showed that magnetite attached to the surface of the sludge and improved the redox capacity of inoculated sludge; the values of electron-donating capacity (EDC) and electron-accepting capacity (EAC) increased by 21.58 and 23.69%, respectively. Microbial community analysis revealed that the dominant bacteria were Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. The growth of Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina was promoted after adding magnetite to the system, which also contributes to the enhanced methane production via involving in DIET during the anaerobic tridigestion process.

Mitigation of the Toxicity of Capsaicin on Anaerobic Codigestion of Food Waste and Waste Activated Sludge Using Calcium Peroxide: A Comprehensive Analysis Using Computational and Biological Approaches

Mingting Du,Xuran Liu,Qing Xu,Qi Lu,Chenxi Li,Qizi Fu,Dandan He,Jingnan Yang,Abing Duan,Dongbo Wang

Increasing amounts of food waste with high concentrations of capsaicin are generated globally. Capsaicin concentration has been proven to inhibit methane production in the anaerobic codigestion process; thus, strategies to alleviate this toxicity are urgently needed. This study focuses on the use of calcium peroxide for alleviating the inhibitory effect of capsaicin and methane production promotion in anaerobic codigestion for the first time. Results show that calcium peroxide increases the rate of capsaicin degradation significantly. Based on active site prediction, degradation product identification, and density functional theory calculations, the main pathways of capsaicin degradation are verified to be O-demethylation and hydrogen abstraction. According to the quantitative structure–activity relationship, the main degradation products are less toxic than capsaicin. With an increase of calcium peroxide addition from 0 to 0.10 g/g VS (volatile solid), the methane yield and production rate are promoted from 174.92 ± 7.12 mg/g VS and 10.54 ± 0.32 mL/(g VS·d) to 307.56 ± 10.43 mg/g VS and 23.15 ± 0.72 mL/(g VS·d), respectively. This study provides insights into calcium peroxide-enhanced capsaicin degradation and demonstrates an effective niche to mitigate the capsaicin toxicity toward anaerobic codigestion.

Calcium peroxide pre-treatment improved the anaerobic digestion of primary sludge and its co-digestion with waste activated sludge

Wei Wei,Xingdong Shi,Lan Wu,Xiaoqing Liu,Bing-Jie Ni

Primary sludge (PS) and Waste activated sludge (WAS) as two main sludge streams in wastewater treatment plants are commonly anaerobically co-digested, which though may be differently affected by pretreatment . Previous work has found that calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) pretreatment effectively enhanced anaerobic digestion of WAS. However, the feasibilities of this strategy on PS anaerobic digestion and co-digestion of WAS and PS are still unclear. Herein, this work provided new insights into these systems. Biomethane potential test demonstrated that CaO 2 pretreatment at 0.02–0.26 g/g-volatile suspended solids (VSS) promoted anaerobic digestion of PS. Then the feasibility of CaO 2 pretreatment for improving anaerobic co-digestion of PS and WAS mixture was confirmed, with the highest improvement in methane production, VSS destruction and sludge reduction being approximately 37.4%, 38.9% and 19.9%, achieved at 0.14 g/g-VSS of CaO 2 . Process modelling analysis revealed that CaO 2 pretreatment increased both degradable faction and actually degraded fraction in sludge mixture. The changes of sludge characteristics via pretreatment and key enzyme activity in sludge anaerobic co-digestion system demonstrated that increased CaO 2 concentration resulted in increased soluble organics release from sludge mixture in the pretreatment stage and inhibited activity of coenzyme F 420 responsible for methanogenesis . Further mechanism investigation disclosed that OH − , O 2 − and OH were main contribution factors, and the order of their contributions were OH − > O 2 − > OH. This work laid the theoretical foundation and provided guidance for the practical application of CaO 2 pre-treatment technology .

Intermittent energization improves microbial electrolysis cell-assisted thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and spent mushroom substance

Shuang Zhang,Weijie Guan,Haishu Sun,Pan Zhao,Wanqing Wang,Ming Gao,Xiaohong Sun,Qunhui Wang

Microbial electrolysis cell-assisted thermophilic anaerobic digestion (MEC-TAD) is a promising method to improve anaerobic co-digestion efficiency; however, its application is restricted by high energy consumption. To improve the energy use efficiency of MEC-TAD, this study investigated the effect of different intermittent energization strategies on thermophilic co-digestion performance. Results revealed that an 18 h-ON/6h-OFF energization schedule resulted in the fastest electron transfer rate and the highest methane yield (364.3 mL/g VS). Mechanistic analysis revealed that 18 h-ON/6h-OFF resulted in the enrichment of electroactive microorganisms and increased abundance of enzyme-coding genes associated with energy metabolism ( ntp , nuo , atp ), electron transfer ( pilA , nfrA2 , ssuE ), and the hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathway. Finally, energy balance analysis revealed that 18 h-ON/6h-OFF had the highest net energy benefit (2.52 kJ) and energy conversion efficiency (110.76 %). Therefore, intermittent energization of MEC-TAD using an 18 h-ON/6h-OFF schedule can provide improved performance and more energy savings.

Enhanced methane production from the co-digestion of food waste and thermally hydrolyzed sludge filtrate

Kai Feng,Luxin Yang,Liang Chen,Qi Jing,Huan Li,Debin Li,Jiayi Liu,Jiabai Cai,Zhou Deng

Although many technologies can be applied to sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW) treatment, high investment and operational costs, high land occupation, and the “not-in-my-backyard” effect pose many challenges in practice. Thus, it is important to develop and utilize low-carbon or negative-carbon technologies to tackle the carbon problem. This paper proposes a method of anaerobic co-digestion of FW and SS, thermally hydrolyzed sludge (THS), or THS filtrate (THF) to enhance their methane potential. Compared to the co-digestion of SS with FW, the methane yield of the co-digestion of THS and FW was 9.7–69.7% higher, and that of the co-digestion of THF and FW was 11.1–101.1% higher. The synergistic effect was weakened with the addition of THS but enhanced with the addition of THF, potentially owing to the change in humic substances . Filtration removed most humic acids (HAs) from THS but retained fulvic acids (FAs) in THF. Moreover, THF produced 71.4% of the methane yield of THS, although only 25% of the organic matter permeated from THS to THF. This indicated that hardly biodegradable substances remained in the dewatering cake and were removed from anaerobic digestion systems. The results indicate that the co-digestion of THF and FW is an effective way to enhance methane production.

Solid-State Co-digestion of Food Waste and Highland Barley Straw: Effect of Inoculum-Substrate Ratio on the Performance and Microbial Community Structure

Wei Yufang,Bao Rui,Guan Ruolin,Li Xiujin,Zuo Xiaoyu,Yuan Hairong

This study investigaved the digestion performance and microbial community structure in the solid-state co-digestion (ScoD) of food waste (FW) and highland barley straw (HBS, mixing ratio of 1:1, 1:5, and 5:1, labeled as FH11, FH15, and FH51, respectively) using different inoculum-substrate ratios (ISR, 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1, labeled as ISR21, ISR31, and ISR51, respectively). The results showed that the cumulative methane yield (CMY) increased with increasing ISR (274.9–410.1, 246.3–411.5, 268.2–451.9 mL/gVS in ISR21, ISR31, and ISR51, respectively). The ScoD of FH51 achieved the maximum CMY with all ISR ratios. The hydrolysis rate coefficient increased under high ISR conditions. The microbial community structure varied in response to different ISR, with Fastidiosipila , Aminobacterium , Gallicola, Methanobacterium , Methanoculleus, and Methanosphaera being the dominant genera. Bacterial genera were strongly correlated with digestion performance and operational parameters. Consequently, controlling the ISR is an effective strategy for imporoving the performance of ScoD. A collaborative strategy for enhanced anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and waste activated sludge by using zero valent iron and ferrous sulfide

Dejin Zhang,Yidan Wei,Mingjiang Zhang,Shuyue Wu,Lixiang Zhou

The application of sulfidated zero-valent iron as an alternative used in coupled anaerobic systems to improve methane production is usually restricted by its high production costs and toxic gasses and wastewater generation. In this study, a collaborative strategy for coupling zero-valent iron (ZVI) and ferrous sulfide (FeS) together into anaerobic systems was used to evaluate the enhancement of methanogenesis during the co-digestion of food waste and waste activated sludge, with the microbial evolution and metabolic pathway revealed. Results showed that the enhanced hydrolysis and acidogenesis process of co-digestion in this coupled anaerobic system could be attributed to synergistic interactions among ZVI, FeS, and microorganisms. Furthermore, both acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic pathways could be promoted by coupling ZVI and FeS. This study demonstrated that coupling ZVI and FeS together into anaerobic systems would be a promising method for improving the methanogenic performance for municipal solid waste treatment.

Constructing bimetal, alloy, and compound-modified nitrogen-doped biomass-derived carbon from coconut shell as accelerants for boosting methane production in bioenergy system

Teng Ke,Sining Yun,Kaijun Wang,Tian Xing,Jiaoe Dang,Yongwei Zhang,Menglong Sun,Jinhang An,Lijianan Liu,Jiayu Liu

Accelerants can enhance methane production in biomass energy systems. Single-component accelerants cannot satisfy the demands of anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) to maximize overall performance. In this work, nitrogen-doped bio-based carbon derived from coconut shells, containing bimetallic Ni/Fe nanoparticles, FeNi3 alloys, and compounds (Fe2O3, FeN, and Fe3O4), was constructed as hybrid accelerants (Ni-N-C, Fe-N-C, and Fe/Ni-N-C) to boost CH4 production and CO2 reduction. The cumulative biogas yield (553.65, 509.65, and 587.76 mL/g volatile solids), methane content (63.58%, 57.90%, and 67.39%), and total chemical oxygen demand degradation rate (60.15%, 54.92%, and 65.38%) of AcoD with Ni-N-C (2.625 g/L), Fe-N-C (3.500 g/L), and Fe/Ni-N-C (2.625 g/L) were higher than control (346.32 mL/g volatile solids, 40.13%, and 32.03%), respectively. These digestates with Ni-N-C, Fe-N-C, and Fe/Ni-N-C showed excellent stability (mass loss: 22.97%-32.75%) and total nutrient content (4.43%-4.61%). Based on the synergistic effects of the different components of the hybrid accelerant, an understanding of the enhanced methanogenesis of AcoD was illustrated.

Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge in anaerobic sequencing batch reactors with application of co-hydrothermal pretreatment of sewage sludge and biogas residue

Yidi Wang,Wei Li,Yongkang Wang,Yusan Turap,Zhentong Wang,Zhe Zhang,Zhou Xia,Wei Wang

The effect of pretreatment technologies and reactor types on conversion efficiency and operating costs of anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge were investigated by 300-day continuous experiments. The volatile solids (VS) removal efficiency increased from 61% to 77% with the application of co-hydrothermal pretreatment of sewage sludge and biogas residue. Deep dewatering reduced the volume of hydrothermally pretreated biogas residue by 85%. When continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) were converted to anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs), vS removal efficiencies increased by 6%, attributed to a 1.4–1.6-fold increase in solids retention time (SRT). The bottom drainage of mineralized sludge every 40 days increased ASBR stability. Firmicutes and Methanosphaera dominated the bacterial and archaeal communities, respectively. Operating costs decreased by 14.9 US$/metric ton feedstock by applying ASBRs. Compared to CSTRs, ASBRs achieved higher organic matter conversion efficiency, smaller volume of biogas residue, and lower operating costs.

Mechanism study of improving anaerobic co-digestion performance of waste activated sludge and food waste by Fe3O4

Ruilin Zhu,Linyan He,Qianyi Li,TingXuan Huang,Meng Gao,Qin Jiang,Junyan Liu,Anrong Cai,Dezhi Shi,Li Gu,Qiang He

A large amount of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste (FW) are produced every year in China. Anaerobic co-digestion is considered to be an effective way to solve this problem. This study applied FW/WAS mixture as co-substrate to create different digestive environment, aiming to understand the mechanism of Fe 3 O 4 particles in promoting AD performance. The results showed that the addition of Fe 3 O 4 presented various performances when facing different digestive acidification stress brought by different mixing ratios of WAS and FW. Methanogenic pathways and microbial communities varied with substrates’ properties. For group A (WAS mono-digestion), the acetoclastic methanogens dominated, 20 mg/g VS (according to the iron element) Fe 3 O 4 could promote methane production, while 200 mg/g VS Fe 3 O 4 would inhibit microbial activity . The promoted methane production by Fe 3 O 4 was attributable to the promotion of sludge hydrolysis. For group B (WAS: FW = 1:0.5, based on VS addition, similarly hereinafter), Fe 3 O 4 triggered direct interspecific electron transfer (DIET) between bacteria and methanogens. For group C (WAS: FW = 1:1), the hydrogenotrophic methanogens dominated, bacteria excreted more non-conductive polysaccharides in EPS to resist unfavorable environment, thereby it prevented their contact with Fe 3 O 4 particles. So, it was difficult for Fe 3 O 4 to trigger DIET and promote the digestive performance of batch experiments in such condition.
