Preparation and combustion behavior of carbon-based synfuel from biomass/coal/CaO by co-carbonization process

Xinyuan Dong,Peng Xu,Lihua Gao,Xiao Han,Junhong Zhang,Zhijun He

An environmentally friendly and low-cost co-carbonization technology has been reported as an effective route for the preparation of carbon-based synfuel for sintering processes employed in the steel industry, in which loaded CaO catalysts promote the synergistic role between sawdust (SD) and bituminous coal (BC). In this work, a series of experiments were conducted to research the effects of the co-carbonization temperature, co-carbonization holding time and addition amount of CaO on synfuel. Finally, a co-carbonization temperature of 550 °C, a co-carbonization holding time of 30 min, and the added amount of CaO at 4 wt% were reasonable preparation conditions based on the biomass/coal of 4/6. According to the above experimental parameters, the solids yield, bulk density and heat value of SD/BC synfuel were 61.07%, 403 kg m −3 and 27.82 MJ kg −1 , respectively. These results showed that adding CaO increases the order and density of synfuel microcrystals. For the surface structure, the addition of CaO could improve the content of aromatic C C and C–O, whereas the content of carbonyl C O decreased in the carbonization process, which demonstrated that the addition of CaO could improve transformation of the graphite-like structure. Additionally, SD/BC synfuel loaded with CaO exhibited a rougher surface and larger pores compared to that without CaO loading, and the number of pores decreased because the formation of CaCO 3 coated the synfuel surface. The above indicators of carbon-based synfuel obtained from this study agree with the practical requirements of sintering operations. This work reveals the mechanism of biomass/coal and CaO interaction on the preparation of carbon-based synfuel.

Unveiling drastic influence of cross-interactions in hydrothermal carbonization of spirulina with cellulose, lignin or poplar on nature of hydrochar and activated carbon

Stelgen Inkoua,Chao Li,Muhammad Rashid,Muhammad Mahboob Naeem,Shu Zhang,Wenran Gao,Mortaza Gholizadeh,Xun Hu

Spirulina platensis contains abundant nitrogen-containing organics, which might react with derivatives of cellulose/lignin during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), probably affecting yield, property of hydrochar , and pore development in activation of hydrochar. This was investigated herein by conducting co-HTC of spirulina platensis with cellulose, lignin, and sawdust at 260 °C and subsequent activation of the resulting hydrochars with K 2 C 2 O 4 at 800 °C. The results showed that cross-condensation of spirulina platensis-derived proteins with cellulose/lignin-derived ketones and phenolics did take place in the co-HTC, forming more π-conjugated heavier organics, retaining more nitrogen species in hydrochar, reducing yields of hydrochar, making the hydrochar more aromatic and increasing the thermal stability and resistivity towards activation. This enhanced the yield of activated carbon (AC) by 7 %–20 % and significantly increased specific surface area of the AC from activation of hydrochar of spirulina platensis + lignin to 2074.5 m 2 /g (859.3 m 2 /g from spirulina platensis only and 1170.1 m 2 /g from lignin only). Furthermore, more mesopores from activation of hydrochar of spirulina platensis + cellulose (47 %) and more micropores from activation of hydrochar of spirulina + sawdust (93 %) was generated. The AC from spirulina platensis + lignin with the developed pore structures generated sufficient sites for adsorption of tetracycline from aqueous phase and minimized steric hindrance for mass transfer with the abundant mesopores (43 %).

Co-carbonization of biomass and oily sludge to prepare sulfamethoxazole super-adsorbent materials

Ai-Yue Wang,Kai Sun,Liping Wu,Ping Wu,Wenchao Zeng,Zhongmin Tian,Qun-Xing Huang

Different biomass materials (walnut shell, coconut shell or cottonwood sawdust) were co-pyrolyzed with carbon-enriched oily sludge to produce aqueous phase sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) adsorption materials. The co-pyrolysis char was activated with K 2 CO 3 to modify its micro-structure and functional groups. Results show that ACs prepared from the mixture contained more mesopores than biomass-based ACs, more porous and higher yield than oily sludge-based ACs. One-step activation method was more attractive than two-step activation in larger specific surface area (up to almost 4 times), wider pore size distribution (2–3 nm), stronger SMZ adsorption ability (higher than 2 times). The maximum BET surface area was 1342 m 2 /g for the ACs prepared from the mixture of walnut shell and oily sludge by one-step activation and it had the maximum SMZ adsorption capacity up to 361.9 mg/g, which is higher than previous reported values. The capacity of SMZ adsorption of ACs was mainly attributed to pore size distribution, specific surface area and functional groups. Among them, the appropriate content of C O and C O functional groups, larger specific area and more pores range from 2 to 3 nm lead to higher adsorption capacity.

Hydrothermal co-carbonization of sewage sludge and high concentration phenolic wastewater for production of solid biofuel with increased calorific value

Liping Wang,Yuzhi Chang,Xuejing Zhang,Fan Yang,Yao Li,Xinran Yang,Shaogang Dong

Hydrothermal carbonization has proven to be an effective method to convert sewage sludge into solid carbon-rich hydrochar , of which the high ash content is generally regarded as limiting factor for energy-related potential application. Hydrothermal co-carbonization of sewage sludge and high concentration phenolic wastewater was firstly investigated in this study as a scenario for production of clean solid biofuel with increased calorific value and decreased ash content, by means of polycondensation reactions between phenols and highly reactive intermediates of biopolymers in sewage sludge. Results showed that addition of phenolic wastewater into sewage sludge led to a substantial increase of hydrochar yield (1.83–31.11%) and higher heating value (1.01–10.01%) and a remarkable decrease of ash content (1.39–25.68%). The reaction temperature and residence time had a complicated impact on the contribution of phenol to hydrochar production. An increase in phenol mixing ratio was beneficial to the improvement of mass yield and higher heating value but showed a less influence on the reduction of ash content. The synergistic effects between phenols and sewage sludge on the production of solid biofuel were closely related to the phenolic species, which followed the order in the aspects of hydrochar yield increase and ash content decrease: phloroglucinol  >  p -nitrophenol >  m -cresol > phenol. The changes of phenols content in liquid phase and variations of functional groups in hydrochars implied that phenols interacted with sewage sludge and incorporated into hydrochars during the hydrothermal co-carbonization. TG-DSC confirmed the improved combustion reactivity of the phenols-sludge-derived hydrochars.

Tailored N-doped porous carbons via a MOF assembly process for high-performance CO2 uptake

Fangyuan Gai,Dongying Zhu,Yunhuan Wu,Xiaogang Zhao,Changhai Liang,Zhenguo Liu,Yunling Liu,Tonghua Wang

Striking a balance between the nitrogen content and pore texture of N-containing metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon is a considerable challenge for high-performance CO2 capture. The high-temperature pyrolysis and activation facilitated well-developed pore structures but resulted in serious nitrogen loss of MOFs. In this work, we developed MOF (ZIF-8)-derived N-doped porous carbons (NPCs) by integrating ZIF-8 with pomelo peel via a co-carbonization and activation process to construct a high-performance CO2 adsorbent. The pomelo peel can effectively prevent the nitrogen loss from the ZIF-8 backbone via pre-melting and polymerization and simultaneously offer the ideal porosity and BET surface area during the co-carbonization and activation process. By tuning the ZIF-8 loading capacity and the activation temperature, the sample NPC-800-4 prepared at 800 °C possessed both ultrahigh surface area (∼1967 m2 g−1) and high N content (∼13.15 wt%). Particularly, the CO2 capacity of NPC-800-4 reached 5.51 mmol g−1 at 25 °C and 9.01 mmol g−1 at 0 °C under 1 bar due to its relatively high content of pyrrolic-N (N5 ∼ 61.2%) and pyridinic-N (N6 ∼ 16.5%), as well as the proper pore size distribution (0.64 nm). In addition, the TPD measurement and CO2 adsorption energy (Qst) of NPC-800-4 also suggested the high desorption activation temperature and energy, indicating a strong binding capacity toward CO2. Moreover, NPC-800-4 exhibited almost constant CO2 uptake in 8 consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles, indicating that the sample with great stability and recyclability would be easily adapted and recycled from industries. This co-carbonization and activation strategy to assembly MOFs with biomass would pave the way for enhancing CO2 capture of MOF-derived carbons.
