N Evolution and Physiochemical Structure Changes in Chars during Co-Pyrolysis: Effects of Abundance of Glucose in Fiberboard

Deliang Xu,Liu Yang,Ming Zhao,Yu Song,Karnowo,Hong Zhang,Xun Hu,Hongqi Sun,Shu Zhang

The simple incineration of wood-based panels (WBPs) waste generates a significant amount of NOx, which has led to urgency in developing a new method for treating the N-containing biomass residues. This work aims to examine the N evolution and physiochemical structural changes during the co-pyrolysis of fiberboard and glucose, where the percentage of glucose in the feedstock was varied from 0% to 70%. It was found that N retention in chars was monotonically increased with increasing use of glucose, achieving ~60% N fixation when the glucose accounted for 70% in the mixture. Pyrrole-N (N-5) and Pyridine-N (N-6) were preferentially formed at high ratios of glucose to fiberboard. While the relevant importance of volatile–char interactions to N retention and transformation could be observed, the volatile–volatile reactions from the two feedstocks played a vital role in the increase in abundance of glucose. With the introduction of glucose, the porous structure and porosity in chars from the co-pyrolysis were dramatically altered, whereas the devolatilization of glucose tended to generate larger pores than the fiberboard. The insignificant changes in carbon structure of all chars revealed by Raman spectroscopy would practically allow us to apply the monosaccharides to the WBPs for regulating N evolution without concerns about its side effects for char carbon structures.Keywords:nitrogen;evolution;co-pyrolysis;fiberboard;glucose

Investigation of Catalytic Co-Pyrolysis Characteristics and Synergistic Effect of Oily Sludge and Walnut Shell

Qinghong Li,Huan Yang,Ping Chen,Wenxue Jiang,Fei Chen,Xiaorong Yu,Gaoshen Su

The co-pyrolysis of oily sludge and walnut shell is a reliable method for solid waste treatment and waste recycling. In this paper, a thermogravimetric analysis was used to study the thermodynamics and synergy effect of oily sludge (OS) and walnut shell (WS) at four heating rates (10, 20, 30, and 40 °C/min) in the temperature range from 50–850 °C. Two model-free methods (FWO and KAS) were used to calculate the activation energy. The results showed that the heating rate had no significant effect on the pyrolysis process. The addition of walnut shell improved the pyrolysis process of the samples. Mixture 1OS3WS had a synergy effect, while other blends showed an inhibitory effect. The synergy effect of co-pyrolysis was strongest when the mass ratio of oily sludge was 25%. The activation energy of the Zn-ZSM-5/25 catalyst was the lowest, and the residual substances were the least, indicating that the Zn-ZSM-5/25 was beneficial to the co-pyrolysis of oily sludge and walnut shell. The analysis of catalytic pyrolysis products by Py-GC/MS found that co-pyrolysis was beneficial to the generation of aromatic hydrocarbons. This study provided a method for the resource utilization of hazardous waste and biomass waste, which was conducive to the production of aromatic chemicals with added value while reducing environmental pollution. Keywords:oily sludge;co-pyrolysis;biomass;ZSM-5

Effect of calcium on synergy evolution mechanism of Zhundong coal and polyethylene co-pyrolysis

Bang Wu,Xin Guo,Xulinjia Liu

The effect of calcium on the synergy evolution mechanism of Zhundong coal and polyethylene (PE) co-pyrolysis was explored by thermogravimetric (TG), fixed-bed experiments, and the ReaxFF simulation method. The weight loss characteristics of coal and PE pyrolysis, obtained through ReaxFF simulations, exhibited good agreement with TG experimental results. The distribution of coal/PE co-pyrolysis products was examined via fixed-bed fast pyrolysis experiments and Reaxff isothermal pyrolysis simulation. The results reveal that calcium substantially reduces co-pyrolysis tar while simultaneously enhancing co-pyrolysis char and gas to varying extents. Besides, the experimental temperature of 973 K and the simulated temperature of 2600 K yield the highest decrease in co-pyrolysis tar, with reductions of 9.52 % and 14.03 %, respectively. It is discovered that the addition of calcium enhances the synergy degree to 100 % between coal and PE molecules, which means that coal molecules become more firmly attached to PE molecular fragments. Additionally, calcium induces polymerization in co-pyrolysis char, causing the char molecules to become larger and increasing their average molecular weight. Ca-containing tars are rich in aliphatic hydrogens, and synergistic molecules prefer light tars, whereas Ca-free tars have a slightly broader range of aromatic hydrogens, and synergistic molecules favor heavy tars, indicating that the addition of calcium may promote the ring-opening process of coal molecules, releasing more branched-chain hydrogen. In the Ca-free and Ca-containing systems, 24.67 % and 29.51 % of the hydrogen content of the coal molecules migrated toward the co-pyrolysis tar, respectively. The proportion of coal tar fragments decreases while the proportion of PE tar and synergistic tar fragments increases in Ca-containing tar when compared to Ca-free tar, indicating that calcium promotes the polymerization of coal tar molecules with PE tar molecules, which leads to larger char molecules and smaller gas molecules.

Elucidating synergistic effects during co-pyrolysis of plastics and paper in municipal solid waste: Thermal behavior and product characteristics

Zichao Hu,Longfei Tang,Peipei Gao,Bin Wang,Chang Zhang,Yue Sheng,Weitong Pan,Lu Ding,Xueli Chen,Fuchen Wang

Plastics and paper are common components of municipal solid waste (MSW), making an in-depth understanding of their interactions essential for MSW thermal conversion. In this study, the co-pyrolysis behavior of plastic and paper was investigated. Firstly, the thermal decomposition characteristics were analyzed. Secondly, the pyrolytic behavior was elucidated in a fixed-bed reactor. Thirdly, the impact of plastic melting on co-pyrolysis was clarified. Results indicated that the thermal decomposition was accelerated between 250 °C and 283 °C, while temperatures above 400 °C resulted in inhibition. During fixed-bed pyrolysis, char yields (70.7–16.9 %) were increased by 4.0 %–12.7 %. This increase was mainly due to plastic melting, which contributed 8.6 % and increased aliphatic carbon content. Besides, PVC and PET exhibited a broader melting range > 500 °C. Bio-oil yields (25.5–70.6 %) were reduced by 3.4 %–12.4 %, primarily affecting aliphatic compositions. Gas yields (3.8–6.5 %) were reduced < 400 °C but increased with temperature, involving primarily H 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 6 .

Enhancing the stability and heavy metal immobilization of co-pyrolysis biochar through biomass and red mud co-pyrolysis: A synergistic mechanism

Xinyao Li,Liangzhong Li,Zhichao Huang,Zhaofeng Chang,Zhuo Tu,Luping Tian,Wei Du,Hao Li,Peng Zhang,Bo Pan

In the research on the preparation of biochar from co-pyrolysis of red mud (RM) and biomass, the synergistic mechanism of immobilizing heavy metals (HMs) and enhancing the stability of biochar is seldom reported. In this study, the effects of different mass ratios of corn stalks (CS) and RM (9:1, 3:1, 2:1, 1:1) and pyrolysis temperatures (300 °C, 450 °C, 600 °C) on the physicochemical properties, carbon stability, HMs speciation, and their potential risks were investigated. Furthermore, the mechanism of the co-pyrolysis process to enhance biochar stability and facilitate transformation of HMs speciation was analyzed. The results showed that co-pyrolysis of CS with RM significantly enhanced biochar's oxidation resistance (I D /I G  = 0.61, R 50,biochar  = 0.52), and simultaneously increased the stabilized state proportion of Ni, Cr, and Cd that exceed standard limits, thereby reduced the biochar phytotoxicity (GI = 193.20%). During the co-pyrolysis process, the metals and metal minerals in RM catalyzed the cleavage of CS, promoting the formation of condensed aromatic carbon structures in biochar, which adsorbed the free HMs to form organic carbon-metal/metal oxide complexes through coordination, achieving the dual roles of immobilizing HMs and enhancing the stability of biochar. In addition, the formation of large aggregates and the conversion of free HMs into metal oxides are important mechanisms for co-pyrolysis to enhance the biochar stability and HMs immobilization, respectively. This study provides a feasible and promising direction for the synergistic and efficient resource utilization of industrial and agricultural waste.

Molecular Mechanism Study of the Kinetics and Product Yields during Copyrolysis of Biomass and Solid Wastes: ReaxFF-MD Method Approach

Jinghui Xu,Lianyi Zhu

Copyrolysis is a potential method for the collaborative disposal of biomass and plastics. There is an interaction between biomass and plastics during copyrolysis. In this work, a combination of ReaxFF-MD simulation and experimental validation was used to investigate the pyrolysis reaction process of the biomass and plastic, observing the evolution of free radicals at the molecular level and exploring the distribution of pyrolysis products. TG-MS results show that reaction temperature ranges for cellulose and PVC are 296–400 and 267–480 °C, respectively. HCl is the main product of PVC pyrolysis, and mixing with cellulose will reduce the yield of HCl. The ReaxFF method was used to model the pyrolysis of cellulose and PVC. The modeling temperature is much higher than the real reaction temperature, which is attributed to the time scale of picoseconds of ReaxFF-MD modeling. Modeling results show that the yield of HCl of the cellulose/PVC mixture is obviously lower than that of pure PVC. When mixed with cellulose, the HCl release is largely inhibited and more chlorine elements are retained in the pyrolysis hydrocarbon fraction or solid products.

Co-pyrolysis of waste plastics and black liquor catalyzed by Mo-Ni/HZSM-5 for preparing high-quality bio-oil

Yanlong Jia,Mengyan Wang,Bolun Li,Jiang Liu,Xueping Song,Min Wu,Yongjun Yin

To solve the long-term environmental pollution caused by black liquor and waste plastics, and achieve high-value utilization, the method about co-pyrolysis of black liquid solid and waste plastics (Polypropylene, Polyethylene) catalyzed by Mo-Ni/HZSM-5 to prepare high-quality bio-oil is studied. The results found that hydrocarbons increased from 14.92% to 42.03% as Polyethylene was co-pyrolyzed with BLS, and hydrocarbons increased from 14.92% to 41.75% as Polypropylene was co-pyrolyzed with BLS, adding plastics can significantly improve the hydrocarbons yield of black liquor. Mo-Ni/HZSM-5 acts as a hydro deoxidizer in the pyrolysis of black liquid and waste plastics, the total hydrocarbons of black liquid solid, black liquid solid& Polypropylene, black liquid solid & Polyethylene increased by 6%, 78%, and 45%, respectively. An appropriate increase of pyrolysis temperature can promote the co-pyrolysis of BLS with PP, and BLS with PE, and can increase the yield of hydrocarbons. Compared with black liquor’s pyrolysis, the yield of hydrocarbons can be increased by 59.65% and 24.52% as Polyethylene or Polypropylene is adapted to pyrolysis with black liquid solid, respectively, the high-quality bio-oil is obtained because of a large number of hydrocarbons and high hydrogen content.

Understanding the synergistic mechanisms of co-pyrolysis of straw and polyethylene for high-quality pyrolysis oil

Zhen He,Quanwei Lv,Xia Jiang,Yang Su,Guangmei Cao,Xianggang Zhang,Lingling Xie,Haijun Wu

The co-pyrolysis of straw and polyethylene (PE) enhances pyrolysis oil quality by reducing oxygenated compounds and increasing hydrocarbons. However, the synergistic mechanisms between straw's main components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) and PE are not well understood. This study investigated these interactions, revealing a two-stage reaction: cellulose and hemicellulose dominate the first stage, while PE and lignin dominate the second. Significant synergistic effects were observed at 550 °C during the co-pyrolysis of straw and PE, resulting in at least a 17.84 % increase in alkanes and a decrease in oxygenated compounds. Free radicals from PE facilitated the cleavage of carbonyl bonds and promoted deoxygenation, leading to more hydrocarbons. Hemicellulose inhibited ester conversion (ΔV esters  = −3.00 %), while lignin suppressed ketone and alcohol formation (ΔV ketones  = −12.14 %, ΔV alcohols  = −1.07 %). These findings align with straw-PE co-pyrolysis results, providing new insights into the synergistic mechanisms between lignocellulosic biomass and plastics.

Co-pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin: Effects of pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and lignin percentage on the properties of biochar using response surface methodology

Xiaoran Li,Kehui Cen,Liangcai Wang,Dongxia Jia,Xiefei Zhu,Dengyu Chen

Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin constitute the basic components of biomass. Knowledge of the interactions between cellulose and lignin during pyrolysis is crucial for unraveling the pyrolysis characteristics of biomass. In this study, for the co-pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin to produce biochar, three influencing factors were selected: pyrolysis temperature (400–800 °C), residence time (5–30 min), and lignin percentage (0–100 %). Pyrolysis experiments were conducted in a vertical tube furnace and the impact of these three factors on the characteristics of biochar was comprehensively explored employing response surface methodology. The results revealed obvious differences between actual values and theoretical values. Specifically, the results showed that the interaction between cellulose and lignin increased the biochar yield, oxygen content, volatile content, and ash content by 6.14 %, 22.85 %, 30.95 %, and 46.75 %, respectively. In contrast, the carbon content, fixed carbon content, and HHV of biochar were relatively reduced by 9.38 %, 11.80 %, and 3.3 %, respectively. Furthermore, Raman spectra of biochar showed that the actual value of graphitization degree of biochar was higher than the theoretical value. This was further corroborated by XPS analysis, wherein owing to the interactions between cellulose and lignin, the actual C-C bond content decreased in contrast to the theoretical value. However, the contents of C-O, C O, COOH functional groups, and aromatic rings increased. Finally, the summary of the co-pyrolysis rules of cellulose and lignin provided a reference for optimal pyrolysis conditions and understanding the mechanism of co-pyrolysis.

Effects of co-pyrolysis of rice husk and sewage sludge on the bioavailability and environmental risks of Pb and Cd

Yan-Qin Yang,Min-Hua Cui,Jian-Chao Guo,Jing-Jing Du,Zhi-Yong Zheng,He Liu

In this study, biochars were produced by co-pyrolysis of rice husk and sewage sludge, the environmental risk of heavy metal (Pd and Cd) in the biochars was assessed. Co-pyrolysis resulted in a lower yield but a higher C content compared with sewage sludge pyrolysis alone, the relative contents of Pb and Cd in biochars were declined. Co-pyrolysis process transformed the bioavailable heavy metals into stable speciation. The environmental risk assessment codes of Pb and Cd were reduced by 1–2 grades. The co-pyrolysis technology provides a feasible method for the safe disposal of heavy metal-contaminated sewage sludge.

Trace metal elements mediated co-pyrolysis of biomass and bentonite for the synthesis of biochar with high stability

Junzhi Yu,Zhansheng Wu,Xiongfang An,Fei Tian,Bing Yu

The stability of biochar is a crucial parameter in determining the potential of biochar for carbon sequestration . Many studies have demonstrated that the addition of clay during the pyrolysis of biomass is beneficial for the production of biochar with a high stability, but finding a strategy for a further improvement of stability of clay-modified biochar is still highly desirable. Herein, the co-pyrolysis of biomass and clay mediated by trace metal elements is proposed as a new strategy for the production of biochar with exceptionally high stability. The results indicate that the biochar resistance index for biochar obtained from the trace metal elements mediated the co-pyrolysis of biomass and clay is ~0.75, which is much higher than that of biochars obtained from biomass pyrolysis or the co-pyrolysis of biomass and clay, demonstrating that the presence of metal ions during the co-pyrolytic process can significantly improve the oxidation resistance of biochar. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that the carbon retention value is reduced when the addition of metal ions during the co-pyrolytic process, and the presence of metal ions can reduce the starting temperature of the pyrolysis reaction and catalyze the process of biomass pyrolysis. In addition, the percentages of C C, C C, and C H in all biochars obtained from trace metal elements mediated the co-pyrolysis of biomass and clay are greater than 41.82%, which are higher than that of original biochar. Besides, the percentage of oxygen-containing functional groups is found to be decreased after the presence of metal ions during the co-pyrolytic process. The presence of metal ions can form metal nano-sulfides and oxides on the surface, which plays a physical barrier to the anti-oxidation performance of biochar. Furthermore, compared to BBC or BC, MnBBC and ZnBBC have a better leaching resistance to P, while FeBBC has almost no leaching resistance to soil P. Overall, the study reveals that the addition of trace element metal ions during the co-prolysis of biomass and bentonite is an effective method to increase the stability of obtained biochar, and it is also beneficial for retarding the release of nutrients in the soil and thus increase the utilization of nutrients.

Co-pyrolysis of cyanobacteria and plastics to synthesize porous carbon and its application in methylene blue adsorption

Lixin Li,Jie Wang,Chao Jia,Ying Lv,Yan Liu

Cyanobacteria and plastics, as the two major problems of the water environment crisis, need to be solved urgently. In particular, there is no reasonable method for simultaneously treating these wastes and recovering useful resources from them. Therefore, the mixture of cyanobacteria and polypropylene (PP) plastics is directly pyrolyzed at different activation conditions to synthesize the composite carbon (CPC) materials, which have excellent performance in water contaminant removal. The result indicates that the added PP is beneficial to improve the properties of CPC material, increasing its specific surface area and pore volume (up to 2811 m 2 /g and 1.992 cm 3 /g, respectively). The application performance of CPC materials is mainly determined by the surface area and pore volume. Therefore, the CPC materials exhibit a higher methylene blue (MB) adsorption (maximum 490 mg/g). This paper provides a new strategy for recycling wastes from water environment and new ideas for synthesizing high-performance composite materials.
