Co-combusting biomass with sewage sludge can effectively inhibit the release of alkali metals. In addition to calcium phosphates, AlPO 4 and FePO 4 are typical phosphates in fresh sludge, resulting from phosphorus removal process compliant discharge. However, the inhibitory effect of AlPO 4 and FePO 4 on potassium release have rarely been studied. This oversight may stem from the absence of AlPO 4 and FePO 4 in high-temperature ash, which instead indicates their preferred reactivity. Thus, we proposed the hypothesis regarding whether the fixation effect of AlPO 4 and FePO 4 on potassium occurs earlier than that of calcium phosphate. This research investigated the interactions and inhibitory effects of these phosphates on potassium release during the co-combustion. In this simplified system using model compounds, the conversion of volatile potassium salts was quantitively assessed by measuring the content of produced water-soluble K-phosphates. The interaction mechanism has been discussed with multiple characterization methods. The results demonstrate a significant inhibitory effect of phosphates on KOH, KNO 3 and K 2 CO 3 , with the effectiveness ranking as follows: AlPO 4 > FePO 4 > Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . Over 80 % of potassium remained as soluble K-phosphates in samples treated with AlPO 4 or FePO 4 at 1000 ℃. In contrast, none of the three additives exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on KCl and K 2 SO 4 . However, the priority of the reactions converting KOH, KNO 3 and K 2 CO 3 into K-phosphates by using AlPO 4 and FePO 4 , along with the stability of the produced phosphates, suggests a promising approach to enhance the formation of more potassium phosphate while reducing KCl—the most problematic volatile component—thereby effectively mitigating potassium release.

Co-firing of coal and biomass blends provides a promising route for clean energy utilization with high efficiency and mitigated pollutants emission. However, the technology meets an important challenge in effective utilization of the co-firing fly ashes. Efforts have been made to valorize the co-firing fly ash residues as potential CO 2 sorbents. To achieve enhanced CO 2 sorption performance, the samples were modified with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). Effects of amine loading, CO 2 sorption temperature, initial CO 2 concentration and gas flow rate on CO 2 sorption behaviors of the amine-tethered sorbents were investigated. The desired sorbent with 25% TEPA loading presented the highest CO 2 sorption capacity of 1.19 mmol CO 2 /g when tested under 60 °C and 15%CO 2 with a total gas flow rate of 1200 ml min −1 . The effects of regeneration temperature and ramping rate on sorbent regeneration performance were demonstrated. The maximum sorbent regeneration efficiency of 97.2% was achieved under the regeneration condition of 110 °C and 5 °C min −1 . CO 2 sorption capacity of the amine-tethered sorbent kept stable within 5 repeated cycles. These findings indicate that the amine-tethered sorbent could be a good candidate for on-site CO 2 capture from flue gas in co-firing power plants.

Addition of sludge into biomass is an alternative method to capture alkali metals and obtain biomass good combustion conditions. The ash fusion characteristics of sewage sludge (SS), petrochemical sludge (PS), wheat straw (WS), and series of the SS/PS and WS blends in different blending ratios were investigated in this study. The mineral matter transformations during the co-firing of SS/PS with WS were examined. Results indicate that the addition of SS/PS can raise the ash fusion temperatures of WS ash, and the ash fusion temperatures of most SS/PS–WS ashes are higher than those of WS ash. The SS/PS-WS ashes have different mineral matters and microstructures in different blending ratios after the co-firing of SS/PS with WS. It is found that the mineral matters in the SS–WS ash are silicates, silicon dioxide and ferric oxide with high melting points , while the matters in the PS–WS ash are phosphate, manganese aluminate, silicon dioxide, and aluminum nitride with high melting points. The results obtained in this study are not only useful for biomass-fired power stations looking for alternative co-firing fuels but reduce ash deposit formation and agglomeration in biomass-fired boiler.

Synthesis of zeolite from industrial wastes has become an important environmental protection strategy. This study explored the synthesis of nano-sized NaX and NaY zeolites from coal/rice husk co-combustion ash (co-ash) using alkali-melting-hydrothermal synthesis and seed guiding methods, followed by modification with Li + and K + exchange. NaY zeolite, synthesized at a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of 5 and crystallization temperature of 100 °C, exhibited the most complete crystal structure and optimal CO 2 adsorption capacity. The specific surface area (SSA) of NaX and NaY zeolites (583.0 m 2 /g and 790.1 m 2 /g, respectively) are comparable to those of commercial zeolites, emphasizing their structural parity, and demonstrating their potential as effective CO 2 adsorbents. NaY demonstrated a CO 2 adsorption capacity of 5.31 mmol/g at 298.15 K and 1 bar, competitive with other conventionally synthesized and commercial zeolites. Cation exchange had a minimal impact on CO 2 adsorption of NaY, with LiX improving capacity by 11.65 % compared to NaX, while LiY showed only a 2.94 % increase. K + exchange negatively affected both zeolites. Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses, using the proposed first-order (PFO) and Langmuir-Freundlich models, indicated that CO 2 adsorption is a rapid physisorption process with thermal effects ranging from 22 to 41 kJ/mol. Both zeolites exhibited excellent CO 2 /N 2 selectivity and regeneration stability, with the loss of adsorption capacity retaining only 10.57 % and 9.63 % for NaX and NaY after fifteen cycles. This highlights their potential as efficient CO 2 adsorbents.

Facing the severe environmental and energy crisis, how to use solid waste cleanly and efficiently is imminent. In this study, coal slime and cellulose are used for co-combustion experiments. Coal slime and cellulose are tested at mass ratios of 10:0, 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9, and 0:10. When 10 % cellulose is added to the coal slime, the ignition temperature decreases by 169.3 °C, and the ignition characteristic index increased by 2.9 times. The addition of cellulose makes the comprehensive combustion performance of the sample increase exponentially. By analyzing the dominant reaction in the co-combustion process of coal slime and cellulose, the variance contribution rates of the first principal component and the second principal component are 67.84 and 29.18 %, respectively. Co-combustion of coal slime and cellulose enhances the release and combustion of early volatiles. In addition, the evolution law of gaseous products and the temperature dependence of gaseous products in the co-combustion process of coal slime and cellulose are analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis for the large-scale application of co-combustion of coal slime and biomass.
