Fe-doping green fluorescent carbon dots via co-electrolysis of chrysoidine G and potassium ferrocyanide for sensitive Cr(VI) detection

Tiantian Long,Hongmei Luo,Hongchen Li,Jingbo Sun,Yang Wang,Jiaquan Zhou,Yi Chen,Dong Xu

In this study, we aimed to synthesis of Fe-doping green fluorescent carbon dots (G-CDs) through the co-electrolysis of chrysoidine G and potassium ferrocyanide for Cr(VI) detection. The use of potassium ferrocyanide improves the quantum yield and sensing performance of G-CDs toward Cr(VI). The G-CDs have a maximum excitation wavelength of 308 nm and an emission wavelength of 510 nm. Comprehensive analyses including Raman, FT-IR, and XPS provided insights into the chemical structure and composition of the G-CDs. Under optimal conditions, G-CDs demonstrated concentration-dependent quenching upon interaction with Cr(VI). A linear relationship within the range of 0.25–100 µM was established with a calibration equation of ΔF/F0 = 0.005 + 0.015C Cr(VI) , yielding an R 2 value of 0.996 and a limit of detection of 0.15 μM. The applicability of the G-CDs method was demonstrated by successful Cr(VI) detection in water samples with recovery rates ranging from 98.8 % to 100.1 % and relative standard deviation within 3.0 %. The fluorescence lifetime and Zeta potential measurements confirmed that the mechanism was via a static quenching process, while redox reaction, nanoparticle aggregation, and surface charge variation also played significant roles.

Synchronous bio-oil upgrading and CO2 fixation by co-electrolysis

Yimin Xiong,Xuepeng Wang,Wei Deng,Zhe Xiong,Jun Xu,Long Jiang,Sheng Su,Song Hu,Xun Hu,Xiangpeng Gao,Jianlan Li,Yi Wang,Jun Xiang

Biomass utilization coupled with CO 2 fixation offers a promising approach to produce sustainable carbon–neutral biofuels and chemicals while contributing to reducing CO 2 emissions. In this study, we proposed a method for synchronous bio-oil upgrading and CO 2 fixation by co-electrolysis in a sealed, undivided cell equipped with a metal cathode and a sacrificial anode. Results showed that the reactive components in bio-oil reacted with CO 2 during co-electrolysis, enhancing the abundance of the esters and formic acid by 57.2% and 270.2%, respectively. The CO 2 fixation rate was enhanced by 4.6% after co-electrolysis of bio-oil and CO 2 , with the control experiment in the absence of bio-oil. Additionally, the Cu cathode showed superior catalytic activation for upgrading bio-oil and achieving the highest CO 2 fixation, owing to its high selectivity for multi-electro transfer products. To summarize, the ketones and the phenolic derivatives in bio-oil could react with CO 2 to form organic esters and acids, while the 2–3 rings and heavy components in bio-oil tended to polymerize and generate insoluble products (polymers). Ultimately, we proposed a carbon-negative distributed biomass processing station system and discussed the future perspective on synchronous bio-oil upgrading and CO 2 fixation by co-electrolysis in this work.

Simple and Controllable Preparation of Molybdenum Carbides by One-Step Co-Electrolysis of Na2MoO4 and CO2

Tao Wu,Jintao Zhang,Yunfei Chen,Yongzheng Jia,Jialiang An,Jianbang Ge,Mingyong Wang

Molybdenum carbides are the promising ceramic materials and catalysts. A new and green method for the controllable preparation of molybdenum carbides was proposed by one-step co-electrolysis of Na2MoO4 and CO2 greenhouse gas in carbonate molten salts. The solubility and decomposition thermodynamics of Na2MoO4 were analyzed. The structure, composition, current efficiency, energy consumption and extraction ratio of molybdenum carbide were effectively regulated by changing the molten salt composition, electrolytic voltage, temperature, and electrolytic time. It was confirmed that MoC, Mo2C or dual-phase MoC-Mo2C can be controllably prepared. Molybdenum carbides may be mainly obtained by the thermal reaction between C from CO2 and Mo from Na2MoO4. Molybdenum carbides prepared at 850 °C and 4.5 V in Na2CO3-K2CO3−32 wt% Li2CO3−15 wt% Na2MoO4 molten salts showed the best electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction. The work provides an innovative and sustainable strategy to prepare molybdenum carbides and utilize CO2.

Self-supported copper-cobalt oxide hybrid electrode for bifunctionally electrocatalytic nitrate reduction and methanol oxidation reactions

Xiuge Wang,Junhao Ren,Zhiyong Gao

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) to ammonia (NH 3 ) is a sustainable approach to upcycle nitrate (NO 3 − ) pollutant, the further pairing of cathodic NO 3 RR with anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) enables coproduction of NH 3 and formate chemicals by electrolysis at enhanced energy efficiency. Bifunctional catalytic electrode for both reactions is crucial for achieving such a target. In view of the strong NO 3 − adsorption ability of copper (Cu) and the high active hydrogen adsorption ability of cobalt (Co) based compound, the catalyst composed of Cu and Co elements facilitates the deoxidation and complete hydrogenation of NO 3 − into NH 3 . In addition, the Cu- and Co-containing material is also possible catalyst or precatalyst for MOR. Herein, a self-supported Cu-cobalt oxide (CoO) hybrid onto nickel foam substrate, denoted as Cu-CoO/NF electrode, was fabricated by electrodeposition at negative potential. Due to the relaying effect of Cu and CoO components during NO 3 RR, the Cu-CoO/NF achieved a decent faradaic efficiency (FE) of 84 ± 4 % and an NH 3 yield of 0.40 ± 0.02 mmol h −1 cm −2 at a high operation potential of −0.1 V. Moreover, the Cu-CoO/NF demonstrated high MOR property for formate production at significantly reduced potential (over 0.2 V) compared to the oxygen evolution reaction. The NO 3 RR-MOR coelectrolyser enabled coproduction of NH 3 and formate at reduced energy consumption. This work provides a promising paradigm for pairwise production of valuable chemicals via rational design of catalytic electrode and construction of coelectrolysis system.

Efficient H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis with NixCu1-x alloy nanocatalysts modified perovskite-type titanate cathodes

Changhong Zhou,Rui Ling,Menglei Wang,Chao Yang,Wentao Qi

Syngas , a mixture of H 2 and CO with adjustable compositional ratios, can be directly produced via H 2 O/CO 2 co-electrolysis in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). In this study, We have developed a strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of titanate perovskite cathodes by constructing active metal-oxide interfaces through the in-situ growth of Ni x Cu 1-x alloy nanocatalysts (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) on LST matrix. The evenly distribution of Ni x Cu 1-x alloy nanoparticles (∼30 nm) on the LST substrate has been confirmed through a serious of characterization techniques, including XRD , XPS, SEM and TEM. Specifically, the LSTNi 0.75 Cu 0.25 cathode demonstrated an optimal synergistic effect , achieving high efficiency in the co-electrolysis of H 2 O/CO 2 to syngas. Under an applied voltage of 1.6 V at 800 °C, the syngas production rate reaches 5.43H 2 and 3.48 CO ml min −1 cm −2 with ∼96 % Faradaic efficiency. Furthermore, the composition of the produced syngas can be finely tuned in a broad range from 0.8 to 3.5 b y simply adjusting the inlet gas composition (H 2 O/CO 2 ratio) and the operating temperature. The LSTNi 0.75 Cu 0.25 cathode, when subjected to continuous H 2 O/CO 2 co-electrolysis for 100 h, exhibited remarkable stability, attributing to the robust and active nature of the metal-oxide interfaces.

Shuli Yin,Songliang Liu,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Hongjing Wang,Liang Wang

Thermodynamically favorable oxidation reaction instead of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with sluggish kinetics as anode reaction and coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at cathode is an effective hydrogen production technology . Herein, we report a solvothermal method synthesis of defect-rich crimped perforated PdIn bimetallene as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen production with the assistance of methanol. Boosted by abundant crystal defects , higher surface energy and expanded surface active sites, the defect-rich crimped perforated PdIn bimetallene exhibits superior activity and stability in catalyzing methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and HER. At the established MOR-HER co-electrolytic system, when the anode and cathode are equipped with PdIn bimetallene, the required cell voltage only is 1.26 V to achieve the current density of 100 mA cm −2 , which is 0.93 V lower than that of traditional water electrolysis. This work reports a defect-rich crimped perforated PdIn bimetallene catalyst, as an effective bifunctional catalyst that provides insight for the advancement of energy-saving and promising hydrogen production engineering.

Peihan Li,Xingyu Chen,Yifei Sun,Ting Chen,Bo Zhang,Fugen Li,Juan Zhou,Shaorong Wang

Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) is an efficient green hydrogen production technology, which is a reverse of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). In this paper, an anode-supported SOEC produced via multi-layer organic co-tape casting with co-sintering process is investigated for high temperature steam electrolysis , carbon dioxide electrolysis, and co-electrolysis. SOEC cathode must maintain its electrocatalytic activity in a high temperature and humidity condition. La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Cr 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3-δ (LSCM) is one of the most promising cathode materials because of its superior electrocatalytic ability and redox stability. The anode-supported structure of electrolysis cell reduces ohmic resistance obviously and LSCM cathode exhibits good catalytic performance. To evaluate the performance of co-electrolysis, a continuous voltage of 1 V is applied for 256 h with 60% H 2 O and 40% CO 2 at 750 °C. The anode-supported SOEC with LSM((La 0.8 Sr 0.2 ) 0.95 Mn 0.5 O 3-δ )/LSM-YSZ(Zr 0.92 Y 0.08 O 2-δ )/YSZ/LSCM structure has good electrochemical performance and durability under co-electrolysis conditions combined with the distribution relaxation of time analysis of impedance spectra.

Sulfur Vacancy-Rich Amorphous Rh Metallene Sulfide for Electrocatalytic Selective Synthesis of Aniline Coupled with Efficient Sulfion Degradation

Qiqi Mao,Xu Mu,Kai Deng,Hongjie Yu,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Liang Wang,Hongjing Wang

The construction of efficient and stable electrocatalysts is of widespread research significance for electrocatalytic coupling reactions. Herein, an amorphous Rh metallene sulfide with sulfur-rich vacancies (a-RhS2–x metallene) is synthesized for the cathodic nitrobenzene (Ph-NO2) electroreduction reaction (ERR) to aniline (Ph-NH2) coupled with the anodic sulfur ion (S2–) oxidation reaction (SOR) in a coelectrolysis system. On the one hand, the amorphous Rh metallene structure can provide enough of a reactive site. On the other hand, the amorphization and the introduced S vacancies can generate rich defects and ligand unsaturated sites to improve the intrinsic activity of the active sites. Due to these advantages, the a-RhS2–x metallene exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance for Ph-NO2 ERR and SOR. Inspiringly, in the assembled electrocatalytic coupling system, the required overpotential is only 0.442 V at 10 mA cm–2 to drive the cathodic Ph-NO2 ERR and anodic SOR, which allows for promising energy-efficient electrolysis to generate high value-added chemicals.

Dual-functional engineering of Fe nanoparticles and oxygen vacancies in Sr1.9Fe1.5Mo0.5O6−δ perovskites for high-efficiency CO2/H2O co-electrolysis

Pengyu Wei,Peng Fu,Liuzhen Bian,Changyang Liu,jianquan Gao,Lei Xing,Chaoyi Wang,Lilin Yang,Yong Li,Shengli An

The development of high-performance perovskite cathodes is critical for advancing carbon-neutral energy technologies through efficient CO2-to-fuel conversion in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). In this work, we present a groundbreaking dual-functional engineering strategy that simultaneously achieves in situ exsolution of Fe nanoparticles and oxygen vacancy formation in Sr2−xFe1.5Mo0.5O6−δ perovskites. By correlating A-site deficiency with tailored reduction protocols, we demonstrate precise control over Fe nanoparticle density and the oxygen vacancy concentration, synergistically addressing the dual bottlenecks of CO2 activation kinetics and ionic transport limitations. The engineered cathode delivers record-breaking performance: −0.92 A cm−2 (H2O electrolysis@800 °C/1.3 V) and −1.58 A cm−2 (co-electrolysis@800 °C/1.5 V), surpassing that of benchmark perovskites. The dual-modified architecture demonstrates unprecedented durability with 120 h of steam electrolysis and 80 h of co-electrolysis operation at 750 °C/0.5 A cm−2. This work establishes a materials design paradigm that directly bridges atomic-scale defect engineering with macroscale energy conversion efficiency, offering a scalable pathway for transforming industrial CO2 emissions into renewable fuels.

Bifunctional ionomers for efficient co-electrolysis of CO2 and pure water towards ethylene production at industrial-scale current densities

Li Wenzheng,Yin Zhenglei,Gao Zeyu,Wang Gongwei,Li Zhen,Wei Fengyuan,Wei Xing,Peng Hanqing,Hu Xingtao,Xiao Li,Lu Juntao,Zhuang Lin

Many CO 2 electrolysers under development use liquid electrolytes (KOH solutions, for example), yet using solid-state polymer electrolytes can in principle improve efficiency and realize co-electrolysis of CO 2 and pure water, avoiding corrosion and electrolyte consumption issues. However, a key challenge in these systems is how to favour production of multicarbon molecules, such as ethylene, which typically necessitates a strong alkaline environment. Here we use bifunctional ionomers as polymer electrolytes that are not only ionically conductive but can also activate CO 2 at the catalyst–electrolyte interface and favour ethylene synthesis, while running on pure water. Specifically, we use quaternary ammonia poly(ether ether ketone) (QAPEEK), which contains carbonyl groups in the polymer chain, as the bifunctional electrolyte. An electrolyser running on CO 2 and pure water exhibits a total current density of 1,000 mA cm − 2 at cell voltages as low as 3.73 V. At 3.54 V, ethylene is produced with the industrial-scale partial current density of 420 mA cm − 2 without any electrolyte consumption.

Bifunctional Pt–Co3O4 electrocatalysts for simultaneous generation of hydrogen and formate via energy-saving alkaline seawater/methanol co-electrolysis

Kun Xiang,Zhongxin Song,Dan Wu,Xiaohui Deng,Xuewan Wang,Wen You,Zhikun Peng,Lei Wang,Jing-Li Luo,Xian-Zhu Fu

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting has been considered as a transformative technology for industrial-scale hydrogen generation. However, the competition between the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and chlorine evolution reaction (CER) at the anode with sluggish kinetics is the main bottleneck. Herein, an organic-oxidation-assisted strategy has been demonstrated, in which the thermodynamically favorable methanol selective oxidation reaction (MSOR) is used to suppress the undesired OER/CER using carbon paper supported Pt–Co3O4 electrocatalysts (denoted as Pt–Co3O4/CP), leading to hydrogen and value-added formate generation simultaneously with significantly low energy consumption. In the integrated two-electrode electrolyzer using Pt–Co3O4/CP bifunctional electrocatalysts, the required cell voltage at 10 mA cm−2 is only 0.555 V when adding 2.0 M methanol, which is 1022 mV lower than that in alkaline seawater. The integrated cell also produces hydrogen and formate simultaneously with high faradaic efficiency and considerable durability. The findings in this work represent a new direction for energy-saving production of hydrogen from seawater.

Entropy-Engineered Non-Precious Perovskite Catalysts for Ampere-Level Ammonia-Water Co-Electrolysis

Mengfei Zhang,Yu Zhang,Zhenkang Sun,Xiaoke Li,Alex J. Brown,Jiaming Sun,Qi Yang,Shanwen Tao,Jianguo Liu

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a sustainable route to high-purity hydrogen, yet its efficiency is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Replacing OER with the thermodynamically favorable ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) significantly reduces the energy input required for hydrogen production while simultaneously addressing ammonia utilization. However, progress is limited by the need for expensive noble metal catalysts like PtIr/C and the poor performance of non-noble alternatives. Herein, a series of perovskite oxide catalysts is reported with tunable B-site configurational entropy. Among them, the high-entropy La 0.7 Sr 0.3 (Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 )O 3-δ (LS5B) catalyst demonstrates exceptional activity and stability for the ammonia-water co-oxidation reaction (AWOR), outperforming lower-entropy analogs. The enhanced performance is attributed to its entropy-stabilized structure, which generates abundant surface oxygen vacancies and suppresses atomic diffusion, increasing both active site density and structural durability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the high-entropy configuration lowers the energy barrier for ammonia adsorption and facilitates intermediate formation. In a practical ammonia-water co-electrolyzer, LS5B delivers a current density of 2.6 A·cm −2 at 2.0 V, surpassing PtIr/C and representing the best performance to date. A stable operation over 90 h at ampere-level current demonstrates LS5B's potential for scalable, efficient green hydrogen production via ammonia-water co-electrolysis.
