Effects of ionic strength, cation type and pH on the cotransport of microplastics with PFOA in saturated porous media

Xu Zhang,Lixingzi Wu,Xinle Han,Yuzhi Shi,Jiwen Huang,Botao Ding,Yanhao Zhang,Zhibin Zhang,Yanfeng Shi,Fulin Li

Both perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) are emerging contaminants commonly found in aqueous environments. In co-contaminated areas, MPs may act as carriers for PFOA, complicating transport dynamics. However, information on their cotransport in porous media is limited. This study investigates the transport behaviors of PFOA and PS-MPs in saturated quartz sand columns under varying ionic strength (IS), cation type, and pH. Using the DLVO interaction energy theory and a mathematical model, we analyzed their cotransport. The results demonstrated that PS-MPs inhibited PFOA transport due to hydrophobic adsorption, reducing PFOA mobility. However, at pH 5, PS-MPs facilitated PFOA transport through competitive adsorption on sand surfaces. Conversely, PFOA significantly accelerated PS-MPs transport, likely due to electrostatic repulsion and reduced PS-MPs size. The promoting effect of PFOA on PS-MPs was similar in NaCl and CaCl 2 solutions. It is noteworthy that under acidic conditions, the increased electrostatic attraction between PS-MPs and quartz sand leads to substantial adsorption of PS-MPs onto the quartz sand surface. Under these conditions, PFOA exerts almost no promoting effect on PS-MPs. This study showed that the coexistence of PS-MPs and PFOA would influence the mobility of each other in the saturated porous media. Overall, the findings from this work could greatly improve our understanding of cotransport behaviors and environmental risk of PS-MPs and PFOA.

Co-transport of Pb (II) and Cd (II) in saturated porous media: effects of colloids, flow rate and grain size

Bingyi Xie,Yanji Jiang,Zhe Zhang,Gang Cao,Huimin Sun,Nong Wang,Shengsen Wang

The transport of Pb(II) or Cd(II) in subsurface has been studied in the literature; however; their co-transport in porous media in presence of colloids has not been clearly understood. In this work, a series of column experiments were conducted to study Pb(II) and Cd(II) co-transport in saturated porous media under various experimental conditions with different combination of colloidal solution (montmorillonite colloid, manual loessial soil colloid and humic acid), flow rate (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 ml min−1) and sand grain size (0.4–0.8mm and 0.8–2.0mm). The results showed that increase of flow rate and grain size promoted the mobility of Pb(II) and Cd(II), furthermore, the presences of mobile colloids also enhanced the mobility of the two heavy metals, meanwhile, Cd(II) showed higher mobility than Pb(II) in the columns. Findings from this work enhanced current understanding of the competitive transport and colloid-facilitated transport of heavy metals in saturated porous media.

Co-transport of arsenic and micro/nano-plastics in saturated soil

Xiaoxiao Hao,HongGuang Sun,Yong Zhang,Shiyin Li,Zhongbo Yu

Contaminants can co-exist and migrate together in the environment, causing complex (and sometimes unexpected) transport dynamics which challenge the efficient remediation of individual contaminants. The co-transport dynamics, however, remained obscure for some contaminants, such as arsenic and micro/nano-plastics (MNPs). To fill this knowledge gap, this study explored the co-transport dynamics of arsenic and MNP particles in saturated soil by combining laboratory experiments and stochastic model analysis. Isothermal adsorption and sand column transport experiments showed that the adsorption of arsenic by MNP particles followed the Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption of 2.425 mg/g for the MNP particles with a diameter of 100 nm. In the presence of MNP particles, the efflux concentration of arsenic ions declined due to adsorption, where the decline rate decreased with the increasing MNP size and increased with the increasing adsorption capacity. Experimental results also showed that the 100 nm nano-plastic particles prohibited arsenic transport in saturated sand columns, while the 5 μm microplastics enhanced arsenic transport due to electrostatic adsorption and media pore plugging. A tempered time fractional advective-dispersion equation was then proposed to quantify the observed breakthrough curves of arsenic. The results showed that this model can reliably capture the co-transport behavior of arsenic with MNPs in the saturated soil with all coefficients of determination over 0.97, and particularly, the small MNP particles facilitated anomalous transport of arsenic. This study therefore improved the understanding and quantification of the co-transport of arsenic and MNPs in soil.

Adsorption of Pb(II) by UV-aged microplastics and cotransport in homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media

Bokun Chang,Zixuan Huang,Xiaodong Yang,Tianhuan Yang,Xianhui Fang,Xianbao Zhong,Wei Ding,Gang Cao,Yajun Yang,Feinan Hu,Chenyang Xu,Ling Qiu,Jialong Lv,Wei Du

To investigate the adsorption effects of aged microplastics (MPs) on Pb(II) and their co-transport properties in homogeneous (quartz sand) and heterogeneous (quartz sand with apple branches biochar) porous media, we explored the co-transport of UV-irradiated aged MPs and coexisting Pb(II) along with their interaction mechanisms. The UV aging process increased the binding sites and electronegativity of the aged MPs' surface, enhancing its adsorption capacity for Pb(II). Aged MPs significantly improved Pb(II) transport through homogeneous media , while Pb(II) hindered the transport of aged MPs by reducing electrostatic repulsion between these particles and the quartz sand. When biochar, with its loose and porous structure, was used as a porous medium, it effectively inhibited the transport capacity of both contaminants. In addition, since the aged MPs cannot penetrate the column, a portion of Pb(II) adsorbed by the aged MPs will be co-deposited with the aged MPs, hindering Pb(II) transport to a greater extent. The transport experiments were simulated and interpreted using two-point kinetic modeling and the DLVO theory. The study results elucidate disparities in the capacity of MPs and aged MPs to transport Pb(II), underscoring the potential of biochar application as an effective strategy to impede the dispersion of composite environmental pollutants.

Synergistic effects of microplastic stability and adsorption rate on co-transport of microplastics and Pb under surfactant

Juehao Ai,Bowen Du,Xiaolong Gao,Jiachang Qiao,Shi Zhou,Xianqiang Yin,Yanji Jiang,Jun Wang,Yajie Zuo,Huimin Sun

The emergence of microplastics (MPs) and their coexistence with heavy metal contaminants pose potential risks to the safety of the subsurface environment and public health. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the co-transport of MPs (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)) with the heavy metal Pb(II) under the surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)). In this study, column experiments were performed to investigate the co-transport of MPs and Pb(II) under surfactants. The co-transport mechanism of MPs with Pb(II) under surfactant was revealed by MPs stability and batch adsorption experiments. Experimental results showed that the presence of Pb(II) did not influence the mobility of MPs under CTAB and SDBS; however, MPs can affect the mobility of Pb(II). Specifically, under CTAB, the MPs increased the recovery rate of Pb(II) from 86% to 87.55%–97.55%. However, under SDBS, the high mobility of PS, PE, and PP inhibited the transport of Pb(II), and the recoveries of Pb(II) decreased from 79% to 57.53%–70.96%. The low mobility of PTFE and PMMA slightly promoted the transport of Pb(II). This could be attributed to two reasons. One aspect is the adsorption rate of Pb(II) by MPs, which plays a pivotal role in influencing the transport tendency of Pb(II) with MPs. Another aspect is the MPs stability, as greater stability enhances their dispersity and accelerates the adsorption rate of Pb(II), thereby facilitating the co-transport of Pb(II) with MPs. This study could provide valuable insights for assessing the transport and environmental impact of MPs and heavy metals in the presence of surfactants.

Co-transport behavior of ammonium and colloids in saturated porous media under different hydrochemical conditions

Li Jingqiao,Zhang Wenjing,Qin Yunqi,Li Xiaofei,Wu Shengyu,Chai Juanfen,Du Shanghai

To investigate co-transport behavior of ammonium and colloids in saturated porous media under different hydrochemical conditions, NH 4 + was selected as the target contaminant, and silicon and humic acid (HA) were selected as typical organic and inorganic colloids in groundwater. Column experiments were then conducted to investigate the transport of NH 4 + colloids under various hydrochemical conditions. The results showed that because of the different properties of colloidal silicon and HA after combining with NH 4 + , the co-transport mechanism became significantly different. During transport by the NH 4 + –colloid system, colloidal silicon occupied the adsorption sites on the medium surface to promote the transport of NH 4 + , while humic acid (HA) increased the number of adsorption sites of the medium to hinder the transport of NH 4 + . The co-transport of NH 4 + and colloids is closely related to hydrochemical conditions. In the presence of HA, competitive adsorption and morphological changes of HA caused NH 4 + to be more likely to be transported at a higher ionic strength (IS = 0.05 m, CaCl 2 ) and alkalinity (pH = 9.3). In the presence of colloidal silicon, blocking action caused the facilitated transport to be dependent on higher ionic strength and acidity (pH = 4.5), causing the recovery of NH 4 + to improve by 7.99%, 222.25% (stage 1), and 8.63%, respectively. Moreover, transport increases with the colloidal silicon concentrations of 20 mg/L then declines at 40 mg/L, demonstrating that increased concentrations will lead to blocking and particle aggregation, resulting in delayed release in the leaching stage. Co-transport of degradable microplastics with Cd(Ⅱ) in saturated porous media: Synergistic effects of strong adsorption affinity and high mobility

Jiao Fei,Jiahao Cui,Binying Wang,Haoyuan Xie,Changzhao Wang,Yifan Zhao,Huimin Sun,Xianqiang Yin

With the utilization of degradable plastics in the agricultural film and packaging industries, degradable microplastics (MPs) with strong mobility distributed in the underground environment may serve as carriers for heavy metals. It is essential to explore the interaction of (aged) degradable MPs with Cd(Ⅱ). The adsorption and co-transport behavior of different types of (aged) MPs (polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) with Cd(Ⅱ) were investigated through batch adsorption experiments and column experiments under different conditions, respectively. The adsorption results showed that the adsorptive capacity of (aged) PLA with O-functional groups, polarity, and more negative charges was stronger than that of PVC and aged PVC, which was attributed to the binding of (aged) PLA to Cd(Ⅱ) through complexation and electrostatic attraction. The co-transport results indicated that the promotion of Cd(Ⅱ) transport by MPs followed the order of aged PLA > PLA > aged PVC > PVC. This facilitation was more pronounced under conditions of stronger transport of MPs and favorable attachment of Cd(Ⅱ) to MPs. Overall, the combination of strong adsorption affinity and high mobility helped (aged) PLA act as effective carriers for Cd(Ⅱ). The DLVO theory well explains the transport behavior of Cd(Ⅱ)-MPs. These findings provide new insights into the co-transport of degradable MPs and heavy metals in the subsurface environment.

Temperature-dependent co-transport behavior of goethite, Fe2+, and antibiotic in the hyporheic zone

Cui Gan,Zhaobo Luo,Chengyuan Su,Caixi Hu,Lei Tong,Jianbo Shi

The hyporheic zone is a crucial ecohydrological interface that plays a substantial role in the biogeochemical activity of iron and its mediated pollutant conversion. It is significantly influenced by dissolved oxygen and temperature fluctuations, but the combined effects and mechanisms are unknown. In this study, the co-transport behavior of goethite colloid (Goe), aqueous Fe 2+ and oxytetracycline (OTC) in groundwater discharge was simulated by column experiments. Our findings reveal that compared with room temperature (25 °C), the penetration rates of these compounds were generally promoted (0.1–7.0 % Goe, 14.1–43.1 % Fe 2+ , 0–19.6 % OTC) at low temperature (10 °C) but inhibited (0–5.0 % Goe, 0–51.0 % Fe 2+ , 0–3.8 % OTC) at high temperature (35 °C). At room temperature (25 °C), only 5 % of the Goe can penetrate the triadic transport system, where the Fe-OTC complex decreased the Zeta potential of Goe, hence improving its transport capacity. Compared with the penetration of individual Fe 2+ , the Fe 2+ transport was increased by 13.2 % due to the promoting effect of OTC on Fe redox cycling, whereas the electron transfer effect between Goe and Fe 2+ inhibited the transport by 46.6 %. The impact of μg/L OTC on the migration of Fe and Goe was dramatically diminished compared to the mg/L level. OTC was eliminated mainly by complex internal oxidation with Fe, weak adsorption, chemisorption, and hydroxyl degradation effects, but these were diminished at low temperatures while intensified at high temperatures. This study provides a deeper understanding of the intricate mechanisms of Fe and antibiotic transport in hyporheic zones, highlighting the significant roles of temperature and chemical interactions, particularly during seasonal changes.

Cotransport of nanoplastics with nZnO in saturated porous media: From brackish water to seawater

Yuanzhang Hou,Yange Wang,Yidi Zhang,Zhibo Lu,Zhenbo Zhang,Zhiqiang Dong,Yuping Qiu

The ocean serves as a repository for various types of artificial nanoparticles. Nanoplastics (NPs) and nano zinc oxide (nZnO), which are frequently employed in personal care products and food packaging materials, are likely simultaneously released and eventually into the ocean with surface runoff. Therefore, their mutual influence and shared destiny in marine environment cannot be ignored. This study examined how nanomaterials interacted and transported through sea sand in various salinity conditions. Results showed that NPs remained dispersed in brine, while nZnO formed homoaggregates. In seawater of 35 practical salinity units (PSU), nZnO formed heteroaggregates with NPs, inhibiting NPs mobility and decreasing the recovered mass percentage (M eff ) from 24.52% to 12.65%. In 3.5 PSU brackish water, nZnO did not significantly aggregate with NPs, and thus barely affected their mobility. However, NPs greatly enhanced nZnO transport with M eff increasing from 14.20% to 25.08%, attributed to the carrier effect of higher mobility NPs. Cotransport from brackish water to seawater was simulated in salinity change experiments and revealed a critical salinity threshold of 10.4 PSU, below which the mobility of NPs was not affected by coexisting nZnO and above which nZnO strongly inhibited NP transport. This study highlights the importance of considering the mutual influence and shared destiny of artificial nanoparticles in the marine environment and how their interaction and cotransport are dependent on changes in seawater salinity.

Regulation of the co-transport of toluene and dichloromethane by adsorbed phase humic acid under different hydro-chemical conditions

Shengyu Wu,Zhongran Wu,Suhang Wang,Youchi Zhang,Yongkai Liao,Chao Cai

The transport behavior of combined organic pollutants in soil and groundwater has attracted significant attention in recent years. Research on the influence of humic acid (HA) on organic pollutant transport behavior mainly focuses on the study of the mobile phase HA, with less research on the adsorbed phase HA, especially regarding its interaction with combined pollutants. To enhance understanding of the regulation of co-transport and retention of combined pollutants by adsorbed phase HA, in this study, tests were conducted to investigate how toluene (TOL) and dichloromethane (DCM) are transported in the presence of adsorbed phase HA at different pH levels and ionic strengths. As the proportions of HA-coated sand increased, so did its adsorption capacity for TOL and DCM, which can be attributed to adsorbed phase HA providing more adsorption sites compared to plain sand, thereby reducing the transport potential of the pollutants. The presence of both TOL and DCM facilitated their mutual transportation due to competitive adsorption controlled by the adsorbed phase HA content in the porous medium. Furthermore, it was observed that pH levels influenced the transport behavior of TOL and DCM when adsorbed phase HA was present since adsorbed phase HA transformation into mobile phase was regulated by pH levels. The transport patterns can be effectively simulated using the chemical nonequilibrium two-site sorption model in HYDRUS-1D, accurately reflecting the retardation coefficients and transport distances based on model parameters. This work sheds new light on the regulatory role of adsorbed phase HA in TOL and DCM transport under diverse hydrochemical conditions, with implications for accurately depicting the behavior of combined pollutants, optimizing the remediation strategies and improving remediation efficiency in contaminated sites.

Cotransport of fullerene nanoparticles and clay colloids in porous media: The relation between aggregation and transport

Weiyong Zhan,Guansheng Liu,Enzhu Hu,Jiaquan Zhang,Lili Huo,Hua Zhong

In the study, cotransport of fullerene nanoparticles ( n C 60 ) and mobile clay colloids (illite (ILL), kaolinite (KL), montmorillonite (ML)) in aquifer porous media and its relation to the aggregative interaction between these two types of particles was investigated. Minimal interaction occurred between n C 60 and ILL, resulting in unaffected transport. Strong heteroaggregation between ML and n C 60 resulted in not only significant retention of both particles during their cotransport but also the retention of n C 60 in the media pre-injected with ML. Strong homoaggregation of KL caused strong straining effect and consequently retention of both KL and n C 60 during their cotransport, however, the pre-emplacement of KL did not cause retention of n C 60 during the sequential injection of KL and n C 60 . Such aggregation behaviors were well demonstrated by the adsorption-sedimentation experiment, microscopic observation, the size and zeta-potential test, and model simulation. Based on the surface chemistry analysis, divalent-cation bridging between ML and n C 60 and hydrogen bonding between KL particles were responsible for the heteroaggregation and the homoaggregation, respectively. The study demonstrated the specificity of the aggregation between the mobile clays and n C 60 to the chemistry of the clays and its consequent effect on the cotransport of the particles, which is critical for assessment of the environmental risk of n C 60 .

Co-transport of uranyl carbonate and silica colloids in saturated quartz sand under different hydrochemical conditions

Wei Hou,Zhiwu Lei,Eming Hu,Hongqiang Wang,Qingliang Wang,Rui Zhang,Hui Li

Uranyl carbonate (UC) and silica colloids (cSiO 2 ) are widely distributed in carbonate-rich subsurface environments associated with uranium pollution. Mobile colloids such as cSiO 2 can affect uranium's transport efficiency in the groundwater environment. Therefore, elucidating the mechanism of UC and cSiO 2 co-transport in a saturated porous medium with different ionic strength ( IS ), pH, and UC concentration is essential for the prevention and control of groundwater radioactive pollution. At low UC concentrations (<2.1 × 10 −5  M), cSiO 2 is more prone to be deposited on the surfaces of quartz sand (QS) than UC, resulting in cSiO 2 preventing UC transport. Compared to pH 7 and 9, at pH 5 the adsorption of uranium [in the form of 81.5% UO 2 CO 3 (aq), 8.6% UO 2 2+ , and 5.2% UO 2 OH + ] on cSiO 2 renders cSiO 2 more prone to aggregate, causing smaller amounts of cSiO 2 (86.6%) and UC (55.8%) to be recovered. Mechanisms responsible for the evolution of the pH and zeta potential in effluents have been proposed. Chemical reactions (ligand-exchange reactions and deprotonation) that occur in the QS column between UC and cSiO 2 /QS cause the pH of the suspension to varying, which in turn causes changes in the zeta potential and particle size of cSiO 2 . Eventually, the recovery rates of cSiO 2 and UC are changed, depending upon the colloid particle size. Changes in ionic strength can seriously affect the stability of cSiO 2 particles, and that effect is more significant when UC is present. Moreover, colloidal filtration theory, a non-equilibrium two-site model, and the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory successfully describe the individual-transport and co-transport of cSiO 2 and UC in the column. This study provides a strong basis for investigating UC pollution control in porous media.
