The application of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) in transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDSs) is limited. Insufficient cohesion in TDDS can lead to cold flow, patch displacement, dose inaccuracies, and the ‘dark ring’ phenomenon. To address these issues, we developed a semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) PSA using a 2-hydroxyethylacrylate-modified acrylic copolymer as the linear polymer and poly[tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate] as the cross-linked network. Semi-IPN PSAs have better mechanical properties compared to traditional PSAs. The cohesion of the semi-IPN PSA was 31 times and 1.6 times that of commercially available DURO-TAK®87-2287 and DURO-TAK® 87–4098, respectively, and the cold flow of the semi-IPN PSA was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the semi-IPN PSA adhered to the human forearm for longer time and did not exhibit the ‘dark ring’ phenomenon after removal. When loaded with flurbiprofen, the semi-IPN PSA was found to maintain high levels of drug release and skin permeation amount, and flurbiprofen loading did not affect its superior cohesive performance. In conclusion, the innovative application of the semi-IPN PSA for TDDS showed excellent mechanical properties, effective adhesion to the skin without irritation, and highly effective drug release. These findings indicate that the use of the semi-IPN is both simple and highly effective for TDDS.

In the exploitation of deep-sea oil and gas resources, the multiphase production and transportation process is frequently plagued by pipeline blockage issues. Especially when hydrates and wax coexist simultaneously, the viscosity and plugging tendency of multiphase flow systems will synergistically increase. Understanding the evolution of morphology of hydrate particles and the agglomeration characteristics of hydrate particles in the presence or absence of wax crystals is crucial to flow assurance industry. With the assistance of a visualized reactor equipped with a three axis moving platform, microscopic images of cyclopentane hydrate during hydrate growth were obtained, and the cohesive force between hydrate particles was measured. It was found that during the hydrate growth on wax-free water droplets, the untransformed water inside the particles gradually wetted the surface of the particle. With the increase in temperature and contact time, the shell of hydrate particles changed from solid and rough to smooth and moist. The cohesive force measured in this work ranges from 3.14 ± 0.52 to 11.77 ± 0.68 mN m−1 with different contact times and temperature. When the contact time was 0 s and 10 s, the cohesive force between particles increased first and then stabilized with temperature. When the contact time was 20 s, the cohesive force was greater than the first two cases and showed an overall stable trend. An interesting phenomenon was also discerned: a large water bridge between particles formed during their separation process. For the wax-containing system, it required a longer time for water droplets to be converted into hydrate particles than that for wax-free systems. After wax participated in hydrate growth, hydrate particles showed the properties of elasticity and stickiness, which resulted in a larger liquid bridge between hydrate particles after their contact. It was suggested that wax crystal would alter the shell structure of hydrate particles, and change the surface properties of hydrate particles and the formation process of the liquid bridge, leading to significant and rapid increase in the cohesive force.

Polyurethane (PU) has been widely used as a glue in various areas. However, adhesion in the presence of water is greatly impeded and results in most synthetic adhesive failure. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel PU construction; underwater PU adhesives were created by the incorporation of synthetic glycerol monomethacrylate (GMA). Furthermore, the urethane structure helped the adhesive eliminate the interfacial water barrier through interactions that were stronger than hydrogen bonding, and GMA as a crosslinking agent was used to generate post-covalent-crosslinking networks through radical polymerization. This enhanced the cohesion so the diffusion of water molecules could be overcome. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, underwater adhesion measurements, and tensile tests were used to characterize the chemical and mechanical properties of the as-obtained adhesive. This led to an adhesive with a better mechanical strength and interfacial adhesion in water, and the results show that the mechanical properties (tensile strength, Young's modulus, and tensile elongation) of the GMA–PU adhesive were higher than those of the pure PU. As for the 4% GMA, the tensile strength was enhanced by 24.3% and the elongation was enhanced by 125.23% over those of the pure PU. This confirmed that the incorporation of GMA into the PU matrix indeed induced increasing cohesion, and the sample's adhesive strength was 21.19 ± 3.9 MPa; this indicated a superior adhesive strength over that of the pure PU. In addition, we can foresee that underwater adhesion will play an important role in prospective surgery and engineering areas. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135 , 46579.

In this paper, the effects of NaOH, NaCl, and heat on the appearance, physical characteristics, and gel structure of duck egg white (EW) jointly induced by NaOH, NaCl, and heat were investigated. Results showed that the absolute value of zeta potential (TAV-ZP) of gel samples increased, hunter whiteness decreased, gel opacity decreased, and the microstructure of gel appeared as a loose network structure with increased NaOH addition. With the increase of NaCl addition, TAV-ZP of gel samples decreased, hunter whiteness increased, gel opacity increased, the microstructure of gel became dense. With the increase of heating temperature, TAV-ZP of gel samples decreased, hunter whiteness decreased, gel opacity increased, the microstructure of gel became dense first and then loosened. The results of SDS-PAGE, surface hydrophobicity, T 2 , hardness, cohesiveness indicated that protein molecules underwent cross-linking, aggregation, and unfolding during duck EW gelation jointly induced by NaOH, NaCl, and heat. The results of strain-stress curve showed that all gel samples had a good anti-compressed ability. The results of central composite design showed that the best treatment of gel was heating temperature 91 °C, NaOH 0.48%, and NaCl 0.3%.

Marine mussels have evolved the secretion of diversified mussel foot proteins to firmly attach to wet, salt-crusty, corroded, and fouled surfaces. Biomimicry of this robust wet adhesion via translating sticky biological molecules is still at an impasse mainly due to the lack of available materials and methodology to fully validate the underline mechanisms of adhesion and cohesion. Increasing sources of evidence have shown that the pair structure of protonated 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) and lysine contributes to the adhesion on substrates. However, it is still an uncultivated field to study the roles of those commonly distributed lysine and non-lysine pair structures in the adhesion to different surfaces, while remaining the intermolecular cohesion strength of the pair structures. Herein, the adhesive and cohesive properties of precisely designed single-molecule domains were systematically analyzed using single-molecule force spectroscopy after surface modification of probe tips. It was revealed a record-high adhesion force of ∼ 1000 pN for DOPA-lysine on cation-rich substrates (mica) and tyrosine-Lys on cation-deficient substrates (hydrophilic modified silicon nitride, Si 3 N 4 (OH)) due to an identified hydrophobic force. DOPA-phenylalanine and DOPA-tryptophan pairs were found to show versatile strong adhesion to both cation-rich and -deficient substrates, spanning from 750 pN to 2250 pN. Furthermore, our results revealed that Phe-Lys had an extraordinarily robust cohesion strength, up to 12,000 pN due to cation-π interactions. This study broadens our view of peptides adhesion, provides single molecule proofs toward understanding the mechanism of pair structures in natural adhesive proteins, as well as the design principles of the artificial adhesive layer.

Osteogenic glue that reproduces the natural bone composition represents the final frontier of orthopedic adhesives with the potential to revolutionize surgical strategies against comminuted fractures. However, it is difficult to achieve an all-in-one formula, which could provide flexible and reliable adhesiveness while avoiding interfering with or even promoting the healing of glued fractures. Herein, an osteogenic glue characterized by inorganic-in-organic integration between amine-modified mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (AMBGN) and bioadhesive gelatin-dextran network (GelDex) is introduced as an all-in-one tool to flexibly adhere and splice bone fragments and subsequently guide fracture healing during degradation. Relying on such integration, a 4-fold improvement in cohesiveness is presented, followed by a nearly 5-fold enhancement in adhesive strength in ex vivo porcine bone samples. The reversible and re-adjustable adhesiveness also enables glue to effectively splice intricate fragments from highly comminuted fractures in the rabbit radius in an in vivo environment. Moreover, well-preserved organic–inorganic integrity during degradation of the glue guides sustained interfacial osteogenesis and achieve satisfying healing outcomes in glued fractures, as observed by the 2-fold improvement in biomechanical and radiological performance compared with commercially available cyanoacrylate adhesives. The current findings propose an all-in-one solution for the fixation of bone fragments during surgery.

The advancement of contemporary adhesives is often limited by the balancing act between cohesion and interfacial adhesion strength. This study explores an approach to overcome this trade-off by utilizing the spontaneous polymerization of a protic ionic liquid-based monomer obtained through the neutralization of 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid and hydroxylamine. The initiator-free polymerization process is carried out through a gradual increase in monomer concentration in aqueous solutions caused by solvent evaporation upon heating, which results in the in-situ formation of a tough and thin adhesive layer with a highly entangled polymeric network and an intimate interface contact between the adhesive and substrate. The abundance of internal and external non-covalent interactions also contributes to both cohesion and interfacial adhesion. Consequently, the produced protic poly(ionic liquid)s exhibit considerable adhesion strength on a variety of substrates. This method also allows for the creation of advanced adhesive composites with electrical conductivity or visualized sensing functionality by incorporating commercially available fillers into the ionic liquid adhesive. This study provides a strategy for creating high-performance ionic liquid-based adhesives and highlights the importance of in-situ polymerization for constructing adhesive composites.

Low adhesion to skin remains a significant challenge for most hydrogel based transdermal drug delivery systems. Meanwhile, most of the methods to improve bio-adhesion often ignore the effect of the cohesion. Inspired by the adhesion mechanism of natural mussels and the synergistic balance theory based on cohesion and adhesion, we designed a poly (acrylamide- co -hydroxyethyl acrylate)-polydopamine-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAHDP) quaternary composite hydrogel to enhance the cohesion and adhesion through the synergistic effect of multiple hydrogen bonds to achieve strong bio-adhesion to skin. The structure of PAHDP was characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR, SEM and TGA . The peeling adhesion force of PAHDP on porcine skin was improved by 9-fold compared with PAH hydrogel. At the same time, the adhesion force of drug-loaded PAHDP was 1.3 times that of Voltaren® EX . The rheological test further demonstrated that the synergistic hydrogen bonding can significantly improve the PAHDP cohesion. In addition, in vitro release, skin permeation and pharmacokinetics test of PAHDP hydrogel containing diclofenac sodium (DIC) showed that monomer dopamine (DA) could promote drug release. FTIR and molecular modeling were utilized to further demonstrate the enhanced drug release mechanism of DA. MTT assay, H&E staining and skin erythema analysis demonstrated that PAHDP was non-irritant to the skin. In conclusion, the innovatively prepared PAHDP hydrogel exhibits high skin adhesion, excellent mechanical properties, non-irritation and high drug release ability. This study also provides a simple and efficient strategy and theoretical basis for the preparation of high adhesion and high drug release hydrogels for transdermal drug delivery system.
