Effect of carbon modification on the structure and electrochemical properties of recycled graphite anode materials

Chen Yongzhi,Wen Xu,Zhang Xiaohong,Yang Chao,Wang Lihua,Zhou Lingfeng,Li Zuohong,Deng Haobo,Li Jian

The recycled graphite (RG) and a new type of recycled graphite with multi-layer coating structure (RGC) were prepared by using spent graphite and asphalt. The electrochemical properties and coatings of RG and RGC were also investigated. The low graphitization degree of hard carbon and soft carbon was beneficial to improve the electrochemical properties of regenerated graphite, which was verified by first principles. The unique structure (soft carbon/ hard carbon/ graphite) limited the volume expansion of hard carbon and graphite when lithium ions were embedded or extruded, which improved the rate capability and cycling performance of the battery. Compared with spent graphite (SG) and recycled graphite (RG), the first charge-specific capacity of RGC at 0.1 C was 349.17 mAh·g − 1 , and the coulombic efficiency was 82.47%. Impressive reversible capacity was 263.38 mAh·g − 1 after 130 cycles at 0.5 C and discharge capacity of 188 mAh·g − 1 at 1 C. Due to the pre-lithiation of RGC, the first coulomb efficiency (99.49%) of the full battery (18,650) was higher than that of commercial graphite, and the energy conservation rate was 65.6% after 2000 cycles. This study provides a simple and effective scheme, and realizes the clean recovery and high value commercial application of spent graphite.

Direct and rapid thermal shock for recycling spent graphite in lithium-ion batteries

Shuo-Hang Zheng,Xiao-Tong Wang,Zhen-Yi Gu,Hong-Yan Lü,Shuying Li,Xin-Yi Zhang,Jun-Ming Cao,Jin-Zhi Guo,Xing-Long Wu

Due to the rapid increase in the number of spent lithium-ion batteries, there has been a growing interest in the recovery of degraded graphite. In this work, a rapid thermal shock (RTS) strategy is proposed to regenerate spent graphite for use in lithium-ion batteries. The results of structural and morphological characterization demonstrate that the graphite is well regenerated by the RTS process. Additionally, an amorphous carbon layer forms and coats onto the surface of the graphite, contributing to excellent rate performance. The regenerated graphite (RG-1000) displays excellent rate performance, with capacities of 413 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 and 102.1 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, it demonstrates long-term cycle stability, maintaining a capacity of 80 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 with a capacity retention of 78.4 % after 600 cycles. This RTS method enables rapid and efficient regeneration of spent graphite anodes for lithium-ion batteries, providing a facile and environmentally friendly strategy for their direct regeneration.

Amorphous Carbon Coating Enabling Waste Graphite to Reuse as High-Performance Anode of Lithium-Ion Battery

Peng Liu,Jiao Peng,Li He,Juan Yang,Yi Tang,Kangjie Zhou,Zheng Xie,Xianyou Wang

Taking full advantage of the waste graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to prepare the regenerate graphite anode and reuse it in lithium-ion batteries is a crucial strategy. Herein, we design a regeneration method involving pretreatment and an amorphous carbon layer coating to repair the defects of waste graphite. Specifically, through calcined in the air, sulfuric acid leaching, and amorphous carbon to modify the surface of graphite, the regenerated graphite not only has high purity but also can be reused as anode of LIBs. After two cycles of activation, the prepared graphite showed an excellent discharge specific capacity of 367.90 mAh g–1 at 0.1C. Besides, it also exhibits good cycling stability with a capacity retention of 83.24% after 350 cycles at 0.5C. Therefore, this work provides a valuable exploration for the cyclic utilization of waste graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries and demonstrates good economic and environmental benefits.

Superior Rate Capability of Small Regenerated Graphite Particles Induced by Homogeneously Distributed Current Density Derived from Cracks and Intrinsic Defects

Haoran Da,Wenhao Fang,Jiufu Zhu,Jin Li,Shanshan Pan,Jiajia Li,Jiaqi Huang,Haitao Zhang,Suojiang Zhang

As spent batteries can be considered as alternative raw sources of electrode materials; the development of regeneration techniques for spent graphite becomes key to realizing economic and environmental sustainability. Herein, the reutilization of small spent graphite particles is domonstrated due to their special structural characteristics, which may directly contribute to the improvement of lithiation kinetics and high-rate charging during long-term cycling. Such intrinsic defects and external cracked channels may be introduced by the aging of intrinsic bulk structure and exfoliation of surface structure. On account of these potential advantages, a carbonized polypyrrole layer on sieved small graphite particles is developed to obtain superior rate performance. The coated amorphous/graphitic layer could repair the exposed edge and basal plane, and significantly facilitate Li ion diffusion during fast charging. Moreover, the enhanced performance may favor the improved homogeneity of current density distribution during fast charging, which is confirmed by a porous electrode model. The regenerated graphite with a disorder/order coating layer could effectively regulate the Li + transport channel, exhibiting a high specific capacity at high-rate charging (102.7 mAh g −1 at 4 C after 500 cycles) without severe Li plating. This work provides an opportunity to utilize spent graphite in fast-charging batteries.

Regenerated spent graphite with enhanced pre-storage abilities of near-surface layers towards high-rate properties

Bin Wang,Yu Dong,Zihao Zeng,Hai Lei,Yue Yang,Peng Ge

Attracted by the potential value of spent lithium-ion batteries, their high effective-recycling has been devoted to numerous attentions. Unfortunately, spent graphite is always used as fossil fuel, accompanying with the serious resources wasting and carbon emission. Owing to low-cost and energy-consumption, their direct regeneration has been regarded as the next-generation key technology. Although high-temperature sintering can induce the recovering of internal structure, they still suffer from strong surface anisotropy. Herein, through the introduction of coating-layer, their infiltration abilities and isotropy are effectively improved. And, their physical-chemical properties can be recovered to that of commercial materials, containing compact-density, impurities-content and conductivities. The as-regenerated sample delivers a Li-storage capacity of 324 mA h g −1 at 1.0 C after 250 cycles. Even at high rates, their specific capacity can be still kept at about 286 mA h g −1 after 300 loops. Assisted by detailed electrochemical analysis, the pre-storage role of surface/near-surface layer is successfully confirmed, accompanied by stable charge balance. Moreover, its diffusion energy barrier of layers is further decreasing, accompanying with the considerable ion-diffusion behaviors. Therefore, the work is anticipated to provide significant surface-tailoring strategy for spent graphite, meanwhile illustrating the in-depth understanding of carbon-layers effect.
