Remediation of cadmium- and lead-contaminated agricultural soil by composite washing with chlorides and citric acid

Li Yu-jiao,Hu Peng-jie,Zhao Jie,Dong Chang-xun

Composite washing of cadmium (Cd)- and lead (Pb)-contaminated agricultural soil from Hunan province in China using mixtures of chlorides (FeCl 3 , CaCl 2 ) and citric acid (CA) was investigated. The concentrations of composite washing agents for metal removal were optimized. Sequential extraction was conducted to study the changes in metal fractions after soil washing. The removal of two metals at optimum concentration was reached. Using FeCl 3 mixed with CA, 44 % of Cd and 23 % of Pb were removed, and 49 and 32 % by CaCl 2 mixed with CA, respectively. The mechanism of composite washing was postulated. A mixture of chlorides and CA enhanced metal extraction from soil through the formation of metal–chloride and metal–citrate complexes. CA in extract solutions promoted the formation of metal–chloride complexes and reduced the solution pH. Composite washing reduced Cd and Pb in Fe–Mn oxide forms significantly. Chlorides and CA exerted a synergistic effect on metal extraction during composite washing.

Size/shape-dependent migration of microplastics in agricultural soil under simulative and natural rainfall

Xiaoting Zhang,Yingxin Chen,Xinyu Li,Yalin Zhang,Wei Gao,Jie Jiang,Aoyun Mo,Defu He

Agricultural soil is a sink of microplastics (MPs) in the environment. MPs in topsoil can be transferred deeply or into surrounding water by rainfall. However, little is known about rainfall-induced migration pattern of different MPs in agricultural soil. In this study, soil leaching experiments of 21 d were performed on Nile red-stained size-different polyethylene terephthalate (PET) particles, and shape-different polyethylene (PE) MPs under simulated or natural rainfall. Results showed that simulated rainfall of 5–25 mm/d caused intensity-dependent migration of MPs in horizontal and vertical directions. Maximum migration depth of MP particles arrived up to 4–7 cm. Rise of soil slopes could significantly increase horizontal mobility of MPs. Comparatively, natural rainfall of similar intensity caused relatively high mobility of MPs. Moreover, under both simulative and natural rainfall, mobility of MPs presented size/shape-different characteristics. Comparatively, small-size MPs (especially <1 mm) showed relatively high mobility in horizontal or vertical direction, and had high-frequency presence in runoff water . Of four MPs' shapes, fiber and film had relatively high mobility in comparison to particles. These results indicate that rainfall can cause size/shape-dependent migration of MPs in agricultural soil. It suggests size/shape-different environment fate of MPs, and provides a reference for MP control.

Effects of nano-SiO2 on the adsorption of chiral metalaxyl to agricultural soils

Junxing Huang,Chuanzhou Liang,Xu Zhang

The application of nanotechnology in agriculture, pesticide delivery and other related fields increases the occurrence of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in soil. Since ENPs have larger surface areas and normally a high adsorption capacity for organic pollutants, they are thought to influence the transport of pesticides in soils and thereafter influence the uptake and transformation of pesticides. The adsorption pattern of racemic-metalaxyl on agricultural soils including kinetics and isotherms changed in the presence of nano-SiO 2 . The adsorption of racemic-metalaxyl on agricultural soil was not enantioselective, in either the presence or the absence of SiO 2 . The adsorption of racemic-metalaxyl on SiO 2 decreased to some extent in soil-SiO 2 mixture, and the absolute decrease was dependent on soil properties. The decreased adsorption of metalaxyl on SiO 2 in soil-SiO 2 mixture arose from the competitive adsorption of soil-dissolved organic matter and the different dispersion and aggregation behaviors of SiO 2 in the presence of soil. Interactions between SiO 2 and soil particles also contributed to the decreased adsorption of metalaxyl on SiO 2 , and the interactions were analyzed by extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory. The results showed that the presence of nano-particles in soils could decrease the mobility of pesticides in soils and that this effect varied with different soil compositions.

Accumulation of microplastics and Tcep pollutants in agricultural soil: Exploring the links between metabolites and gut microbiota in earthworm homeostasis

Jing Cao,Qian Wang,Yumeng Lei,Xiaofeng Jiang,Mei Li

Agricultural soil contamination with plastic film has become a critical global environmental problem, requiring greater research on the possible occurrence and biological risk of microplastics (MPs) and their additives in soil ecosystems. The presence of MPs and tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (Tcep) in agricultural soil was investigated at nine sites in the present study. Polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) and Tcep were found at all nine sites. To study co-exposure effects on soil microbiota and earthworms, and to mimic a realistic exposure scenario, 0.05 % (w/w) PE-MPs with three particle size ranges were combined with Tcep (1.0 mg/kg). After 28 days of exposure, there was no indication that added PE-MPs and/or Tcep significantly affected the soil microbial community structure. In earthworms, size-selective intake, digestion and egestion of PE-MPs may occur, with Tcep co-exposure affecting the residual Tcep concentration in earthworm intestines (3.52–9.31 μg/g dw). Long-term earthworm PE-MPs intake caused intestinal damage, and Tcep co-exposure increased oxidative stress, thereby influencing their feeding behavior and growth, resulting in weight loss (3.42 %–14.96 %), especially for the most common PE-MPs sizes (0–300 μm). High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used for metabolomic analysis, revealing the significant up-regulation of citrate ( p  < 0.001) and down-regulation of l -glutamate ( p  < 0.05) in co-exposure groups. Co-exposure resulted in the alteration of most metabolic pathways, thereby impairing nervous, digestive and excretory systems in the earthworm, with an associated decrease in amino acid metabolism and changes in tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates. Gut microbiota, such as Proteobacteria ( Verminephrobacter and Bradyrhizobium ) and Firmicutes ( Bacillus ), are critically important in maintaining earthworm metabolic homeostasis, particularly for the TCA cycle and amino acid metabolism. Overall, MPs and Tcep co-exposure in agricultural soil enhanced their toxicity to earthworms and may potentially endanger the development of agricultural sustainability.

Existence of antibiotic pollutant in agricultural soil: Exploring the correlation between microbiome and pea yield

Wangjing Zhai,Wenqi Jiang,Qiqi Guo,Zhixuan Wang,Donghui Liu,Zhiqiang Zhou,Peng Wang

Due to sewage irrigation, manure fertilizer application or other agricultural activities, antibiotics have been introduced into farmland as an emerging contaminant , existing with other agrochemicals . However, the potential influences of antibiotics on the efficiency of agrochemicals and crops health are still unclear. In this work, the effect of antibiotics on fertilization efficiency and pea yield was evaluated, and the mechanism was explored in view of soil microbiome. Nitrogen utilization and pea yield were decreased by antibiotics. In specific, the weight of seeds decreased 9.5 % by 5 mg/kg antibiotics and decreased 25.1 % by 50 mg/kg antibiotics. For N nutrient in pea, antibiotics resulted in 62.5 %–63.7 % decrease in amino acid content and 8.3 %–35.3 % decrease in inorganic-N content. Further research showed that antibiotics interfered with N cycle in soil, inhibiting urea decomposition and denitrification process by reducing function genes ure C, nir K and nor B in soil, thus decreasing N availability. Meanwhile, antibiotics destroyed the enzyme function in N assimilation. This work evaluated the environmental risk of antibiotics from fertilization efficiency and N utilization in crop. Antibiotics could not only affect N cycle, limiting the decomposition of N fertilizer, but also affect N utilization in plants, thus affecting the yield and even the quality of leguminous crops.

Residues and Bioavailability of Neonicotinoid Pesticide in Shaanxi Agricultural Soil

Hua Li,Zhao Danyang,Wang Huining,Wei Ting

Shaanxi is an important agricultural province in China. The rapid development of agriculture has led to an increase in the use of pesticides, which has resulted in a serious pesticide pollution problem. In addition, assessing the total residue concentrations would overestimate the actual hazard of neonicotinoid pesticides, so it is essential to study the bioavailability of neonicotinoid pesticides. In the study, 115 soil samples collected from different areas from northern, central, and southern Shaanxi were used to determine the residues of four neonicotinoid pesticides: imidacloprid, acetamiprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam. An analytical method applied to assess the bioavailability of neonicotinoid pesticides was established, the bioavailability of different types of neonicotinoid pesticides and related factors affecting their bioavailability were determined, and the changes in the bioavailability of neonicotinoid pesticides in actual and simulated soils were explored. The results showed that the detection rates and residue levels of neonicotinoid pesticides varied in different regions of Shaanxi. By studying the bioavailability of neonicotinoid pesticides, it was found that the bioavailability of the four neonicotinoid pesticides was always: thiamethoxam > acetamiprid > imidacloprid > clothianidin, which may be related to their structural properties. Soil pH is positively related to the size of the bioavailability of neonicotinoid pesticides, while soil organic matter content and soil aging time are negatively related to the size of the bioavailability of neonicotinoid pesticides.

Effect of Polyvinyl Chloride Microplastics on Bacterial Community and Nutrient Status in Two Agricultural Soils

Yan Yuanyuan,Chen Zhanghao,Zhu Fengxiao,Zhu Changyin,Wang Chao,Gu Cheng

Knowledge of the influence of microplastics on soil microbiome and nutrients is important for understanding the ecological consequences of microplastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we investigated whether polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastic pollution at environmentally relevant concentrations would affect soil bacterial community and available nitrogen/phosphorus content. The results showed that although PVC microplastics at 0.1% and 1% levels did not have a significant effect on overall bacterial community diversity and composition in soil over the course of 35 days, a number of bacterial genera were significantly reduced or enriched by the presence of microplastics. Potentially due to their effect on certain functional groups, microplastics caused a significant change in soil available P content. It is noteworthy that, depending on soil type, pollution level and plasticizer presence, contrasting effects of microplastics may be observed. Further research is definitely warranted to gain a clearer picture of the threats posed by microplastic pollution in soil environments.

Sorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) to agricultural soils

Lei Xiang,Teng-Fei Sun,Mei-Jie Zheng,Yan-Wen Li,Hui Li,Ming-Hung Wong,Quan-Ying Cai,Ce-Hui Mo

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) used as cationic surfactants are intensively released into environment to be pollutants receiving more and more concerns. Sorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), one of commonly used alkyl QACs, to five types of agricultural soils at low concentrations (1–50   mg/L) was investigated using batch experiments. DTAC sorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and reached reaction equilibrium within 120   min. Both Freundlich model and Langmuir model fitted well with DTAC isotherm data with the latter better. DTAC sorption was spontaneous and favorable, presenting a physical sorption dominated by ion exchanges. Sorption distribution coefficient and sorption affinity demonstrated that soil clay contents acted as a predominant phase of DTAC sorption. DTAC could display a higher mobility and potential accumulation in crops in the soils with lower clay contents and lower pH values. Sorption of DTAC was heavily affected by ions in solution with anion promotion and cation inhibition.

Soil flushing coupled with aminated-nanocellulose/MOF hydrogel nanocomposites adsorbents: A novel sustainable remediation strategy for Cr(VI)-contaminated agricultural soils

Hiba Shaghaleh,Yousef Alhaj Hamoud,Qin Sun,Mohamed S. Sheteiwy,Hamada AbdElgawad

Soil flushing and adsorption-based soil remediation are promising options for removing heavy metals in agricultural soil. However, they encounter limitations in low removal efficiency, secondary pollution potential, or the need for a purification/recovery process. Optimizing flushing solutions or the functional properties of adsorbents could fundamentally eliminate the drawbacks of these methods. Yet, their practical application remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a new combined remediation strategy of multiple-pulse water soil flushing (MF) with novel aminated cellulose nanofibers (A-NFCs)/AEM/AM@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (ANCMH) was adopted to remove Cr(VI) from agricultural soil. The characteristic analyses approved Cr(VI) adsorption-coupled reduction/swelling-based mechanisms on ANCMH with the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 338.24 mg g −1 at pH 6.8 governed by pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models. Instead of conventional MF application using environmentally problematic extractant fluids, a 5-day soil column simulation trial of MF coupled with ANCMH adsorbent layers (MF@ANCMH) was applied in medium-to-highly Cr(VI)-contaminated soil followed by easy ANCMHs separation, preventing secondary pollution. Innovatively, the water flushing-stop flux events favorably decreased the pH of neutral soil by 0.83 folds and allowed Cr(VI) release from the soil matrix to be adsorbed by ANCMHs, achieving a high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 98.9 %. Compared to the soil treated with ANCMH individually and soil flushed with water or Na 2 EDTA, the MF@ANCMH-treated soil reached the corresponding regulation of permissible levels for Cr(VI) residential scenarios in agricultural soil of 5.6 ppm with 3-cycles of ANCMH reuse. The residual Cr in MF@ANCMH-remediated soil displayed minimal bioavailability at root-zoon soil of ≤4.2 ppm and a 97.66 % reduction in its exchangeable-carbonate fraction compared to untreated soil, corresponding to a risk assessment code score below 1 %. Also, the application of MF@ANCMH resulted in Cr bioaccumulation below 0.1 ppm in cultivated wheat plants, prevented the physiological phytotoxicity symptoms, and elevated their antioxidant enzyme activity, photosynthesis, growth, and yielding indicators compared to that grown in untreated soil. Furthermore, it improved soil organic matter, microbial community, diversity, and microecological functions. This study provides a promising alternative remediation strategy for neutral soil that can maintain soil/crop quality and soil health with high chemical/environmental stability of pollutants after remediation, demonstrating its sustainability and feasibility in agricultural soil.

Effective and green in-situ remediation strategies based on TEMPO-nanocellulose/lignin/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel nanocomposite adsorbent for lead and copper in agricultural soils

Hiba Shaghaleh,Yousef Alhaj Hamoud,Qin Sun

Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.

Determination of endocrine-disrupting potencies of agricultural soils in China via a battery of steroid receptor bioassays

Jianyun Zhang,Rui Liu,Lili Niu,Siyu Zhu,Quan Zhang,Meirong Zhao,Weiping Liu,Jing Liu

Pollution of agricultural soils by pesticides, such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), can be a significant issue since high detection rates of these compounds were reported in our previous studies. However, more uncertain kinds, quantities and density of pollutants remained in soil samples were unidentified. In this study, the total hormonal activities of complex mixtures of both known and unknown contaminants in agricultural soils in mainland China were measured by applying highly sensitive reporter gene assays for detecting agonists/antagonists for estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), progesterone receptor (PR), glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). High detection rates of estrogenic activities and anti-progestogenic activities were observed among the 123 soil samples, reaching 79% and 73%, respectively. More than half of the soil samples showed obvious antagonistic effects against AR and GR. Approximately a third of tested samples exhibited androgenic, progestogenic and glucocorticoidic effects. A total of 72% and 78% soil extracts had mineralocorticoid-like and anti-mineralocorticoid activities, respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed between estrogenic activity and the concentrations of Σdichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), Σendosulfans, Σchlordanes, heptachlor and Σdrins, respectively, but not other receptors. As a rapid and convenient pre-caution method, determination of endocrine-disrupting potencies of contaminated soils via bioassay could help to identify and define sites that required further attention for ecological risk assessments .

Effects of microplastics on soil microbiome: The impacts of polymer type, shape, and concentration

Yuanze Sun,Chongxue Duan,Na Cao,Xinfei Li,Xiaomin Li,Yumei Chen,Yi Huang,Jie Wang

Increasing research has recognized that the ubiquitous presence of microplastics in terrestrial environments is undeniable, which potentially alters the soil ecosystem properties and processes. The fact that microplastics with diverse characteristics enter into the soil may induce distinct effects on soil ecosystems. Our knowledge of the impacts of microplastics with different polymers, shapes, and concentrations on soil bacterial communities is still limited. To address this, we examined the effects of spherical microplastics (150 μm) with different polymers (i.e., polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP)) and four shapes of PP microplastics (i.e., fiber, film, foam, and particle) at a constant concentration (1%, w /w) on the soil bacterial community in an agricultural soil over 60 days. Treatments with different concentrations (0.01–20%, w/w) of PP microplastic particles (150 μm) were also included. The bacterial communities in PE and PP treatments showed a similar pattern but separated from those in PS-treated soils, indicating the polymer backbone structure is an important factor modulating the soil bacterial responses. Fiber, foam, and film microplastics significantly affected the soil bacterial composition as compared to the particle. The community dissimilarity of soil bacteria was significantly ( R 2  = 0.592, p  < 0.001) correlated with the changes of microplastic concentration. The random forest model identified that certain bacteria belonging to Patescibacteria were closely linked to microplastic contamination. Additionally, analysis of the predicted function further showed that microplastics with different characteristics caused distinct effects on microbial community function. Our findings suggested that the idiosyncrasies of microplastics should not be neglected when studying their effects on terrestrial ecosystems.
