Pesticide residue has become the main technical barrier that restricts the export of Chinese wolfberry. Can we achieve high efficacy and low safety risk by balancing pesticide deposition on the leaves and fruits of Chinese wolfberry? In this research, the structural characteristics and wettability of leaves and fruits of Chinese wolfberry at different growth stages were studied. The adaxial and abaxial surfaces of leaves were hydrophobic, whereas the fruit surfaces were hydrophilic. Adding spray adjuvant could increase the retention of droplets on the leaf surfaces of Chinese wolfberry by 52.28–97.89% and reduce the retention on the fruit surfaces by 21.68–42.14%. A structural equation model analysis showed that the adhesion tension was the key factor affecting the retention of the solutions among various interface behaviors. When the concentrations of Silwet618, AEO-5, Gemini 31551, and 1227 were 2–5 times higher than their CMCs, the retention of pesticide solutions (pyraclostrobin and tylophorine) on Chinese wolfberry leaves significantly increased, and the control efficacies on aphids and powdery mildew also dramatically improved (65.90–105.15 and 41.18–133.06%, respectively). Meanwhile, the retention of pesticides on the fruit of Chinese wolfberry was reduced. This study provides new insights into increasing the utilization of pesticides in controlling pests and improving food safety.

Extensive research has been conducted on plant protection unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) chemical application technology in recent years owing to its importance as a means of pest and disease control. UAV spraying in orchards faces the drawback of drift risk and can be hazardous to non-targeted crops, humans, and the environment. A detailed and systematic analysis must be performed to determine the uniformity and drift risk of plant UAV sprays. In this study, a peach orchard is sprayed with a plant-protection UAV at three different flight velocities and we evaluate the combined pesticide deposition performance of the canopy, ground loss, downwind ground drift, and airborne drift. Additionally, the droplet size and coverage rate in the canopy are calculated by using water-sensitive paper. The results demonstrate that there is significant difference in the droplet size at flight velocities of 1–3 m/s. The droplet size in the lower canopy is slightly smaller than those in the middle and upper parts. Increasing the flight velocity helps the pesticide droplets to spread and penetrate the canopy. However, it also causes a non-uniform pesticide deposition, reduced effective coverage ratio and effective density ratio. Among the three pesticides used in the experiment, imidacloprid exhibits the best deposition efficiency. The deposition amount and normalized deposition amount in the canopy were the highest at a flight velocity of 2 m/s, accompanied by a lower ground loss under the canopy. The highest near-field ground drift is observed at a velocity of 1 m/s, and the far-field airborne drift is highest at 3 m/s. Lastly, this study provides a reference for the commercial application of plant-protection UAVs.

Nonuniform deposition of pesticide droplets on crops and their runoff create excessive pesticide waste, posing a major threat to public health and the environment. Microgels are a class of soft colloids that combine the properties of solid particles and polymers to regulate the resistance of pesticides to rainwater runoff and mitigate the coffee-ring effect (CRE). In this study, we developed amphiphilic calcium alginate microgels (UAMs) capable of enhancing the pesticide evaporation uniformity and the deposition of berberine sulfate (BS) on a target crop, as well as its surface adhesion. A BS-loaded UAM (UAM–BS) solution was sprayed onto the surface of pepper leaves. The gel coating contained flexible and complex networks, which are easily entangled with the microstructures on the leaf surface. This ultimately resulted in the removal of the interface void and the improvement of the BS deposition uniformity at multiple scales. In addition, the surfactivity of the microgels was regulated through grafting, which affected the uniformity of the liquid film deposition. Furthermore, the effect of UAM–BS on pepper anthracnose was investigated, and its control efficacy was found to be over 80%. Additionally, it could improve the BS deposition uniformity and adhesion while mitigating the CRE. This study establishes the use of alginate-based gel coatings as a promising strategy for improving pesticide utilization while addressing the issues of easy runoff and nonuniform deposition. The findings will prove valuable in the fields of bionic materials science, bio-macromolecular chemistry, and agricultural science.

The addition of a surfactant is a constructive strategy to enhance the deposition of pesticides on plant leaves in agriculture. However, currently used surfactants normally require to be used at high concentrations, and most of them are anionic or nonionic. In this work, we found that didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), a double-chain cationic surfactant, can not only inhibit droplets from receding and rebounding but also promote sufficient spreading on paraffin and Chenopodium album L. leaf surfaces at an ultralow concentration (0.05%), in comparison with widely reported sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT). This phenomenon is attributed to the fast adsorption kinetics of DDAB from the bulk to the newly created interface (mere 100 ms), decreasing the surface tension significantly. Field experiments further prove that the addition of DDAB can significantly improve the control efficiency of herbicides. Our findings provide a simple and effective way for improving the droplet deposition on hydrophobic plant surfaces, which may lead to economic and environmental benefits in the future.

Pesticides are vital for ensuring crop protection and stable yields, but their low efficiency and eco-unfriendly carriers raise environmental concerns. In this study, abamectin nanopesticides were designed and fabricated using natural polysaccharides [gum arabic (GA)] and a co-stabiliser via flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) method to reduce the size of nanopesticides and enhance their foliar affinity and deposition. Various co-stabilisers were innovatively introduced into the FNP process; the synergy between GA and the co-stabiliser significantly reduced the particle size (111.5 nm), narrowed the size distribution (polydispersity index = 0.078), and enhanced the stability and release performance of the nanopesticides. Importantly, the downsized nanopesticides effectively improved retention on leaf surfaces, reducing pesticide loss. In addition, because of the excellent control capability of the FNP method, the particle size of the nanopesticides could be flexibly adjusted by modifying the flow-based process parameters. Nanopesticides with small sizes demonstrated good control efficacy against Tetranychus urticae , comparable to those of commercial emulsion in water formulations. This study provides an effective approach for enhancing the utilisation efficiency of pesticide droplets by reducing particle size to ensure sustainable agriculture.
