Polar regions hold significant potential for energy and resource development, but extreme temperatures and persistent ice pose challenges to commercial shipping, resource exploration, and scientific research. Here, a super-slippery oleogel ice-phobic coating (CP_U80@L-Ppy) with ultra-low temperature applicability is developed using expanded lamellar graphite networks and temperature-controlled deformed microspheres modified with linear polypyrrole. The ice adhesion strength at −30 °C is reduced to ≈ 3.76 kPa in the horizontal shear mode and remains below 10 kPa after 231 icing/shear detachment cycles. At ultra-low temperatures (−100–−70 °C), the ice adhesion strength stays below 30 kPa due to the vertical modulus mismatch between the ice and coating, along with the tangential modulus mismatch between the surface components. The coating also exhibits photo- and electro-responsive anti-icing/ice-phobic functionalities, broadening its potential for all-weather applications. Under “1 sun” irradiation at −30 °C, rapid defrosting (1 min) and ice detachment (2.8 min) are achieved. Additionally, electro-responsive defrosting and ice detachment periods of 1.4 and 2.6 min, respectively, are obtained using only two standard batteries in series (3.5 V) at −15 °C, demonstrating high energy efficiency. This work offers a promising strategy for developing efficient ice-phobic technologies suited to ultra-cold environments, with practical potential for polar applications.

Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted significant attention for their potential in anti-icing applications. However, their practical application is often hampered by inherent limitations, such as mechanical durability and insufficient de-icing performance. In this study, a functional filler (ODA/MnO 2 @PDA-SiO 2 , OMPS) is synthesized by simple grafting and redox reaction, and a robust superhydrophobic low-adhesion anti-icing coating (OMPS-PDMS/E51) is prepared through spraying. The OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating surface shows a uniformly distributed concave-convex structure with a roughness value of 33.209 μm. This fine micro-nano structure makes the water contact angle of the coating surface as high as 157.1° and the rolling angle as low as 4.6°, indicating that the coating has excellent superhydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the coating surface is in a low water adhesion Cassie-Baxter state, so it has good antifouling and self-cleaning properties. Additionally, Cassie-Baxter wetting mode can minimize the contact between the coating and water, thereby inhibiting the formation and anchoring of ice core, so the freezing delay time of the OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating is up to 358 seconds and the ice adhesion strength is as low as 26.3 KPa. Notably, the OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating also exhibits the characteristics of active de-icing, which can rapidly heat up the coating surface through photothermal conversion, such as its surface temperature can reach 82.9 °C after infrared irradiation for 400 seconds, and the ice formed at -20 °C on the coating can melt within 144 seconds. These properties highlight the OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating’s potential for long-term anti-icing and de-icing applications in harsh environments.

The risk of freezing on exposed surfaces has consistently posed a challenge to both safety and economy. Bionic orientation structure is significant in reducing locomotion resistance. In this work, a stress-localized material is prepared by coating the room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) on the fish skin-like structure surface. The influence of the coating thickness and structural parameters of the fish skin on its ice-repellent and tribological properties is investigated at low temperatures. The results demonstrate that the small hook-like spine structure covered with a 1 mm thickness of RTV exhibits the lowest ice adhesion strength in the positive direction. This is because the stress localization phenomenon is easily triggered by the small hook-like spines. Furthermore, the lowest friction coefficient in the positive direction is achieved, which can serve to reduce friction and provide directional lubrication. The molecular dynamics results demonstrate that the strong interaction between the ice and RTV molecules at lower temperatures contributes to the high ice adhesion strength. The results of this work make the stress-localized material with oriented structures a promising candidate for specific de-icing and tribological applications.

Icing causes many problems in daily life and with equipment stability, and many efforts have been made to remove surface icing. Herein, a novel organic gel-infused porous material is developed to achieve excellent de-icing performance. Porous polydimethylsiloxane (P-PDMS) composites with different pore sizes were prepared by a template method. The two-phase skeletons and/or gel material was obtained by infusing PDMS gel into P-PDMS (GIP-PDMS). The ice adhesion strength of GIP-PDMS under static and dynamic icing conditions was comparatively investigated. The results show that GIP-PDMS displayed excellent anti-icing performance, and the delay freezing time of GIP-PDMS1 was ∼4554 s at −5 °C. The ice adhesion strength of GIP-PDMS was much lower than that of P-PDMS, owing to the distinct modulus between the two-phase skeletons and/or gel. The simulation results indicated that the stress concentration promoted ice fracture and contributed to weak ice adhesion. Molecular dynamics further showed that the state of the molecular chains and the interfacial interaction between ice and PDMS gel at 268 K helped to decrease the shear force.

Unwanted ice build-up is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature, which creates a series of catastrophic impacts on a wide range of human activities. Various anti/de-icing materials have been proposed for dealing with icing issues. Superhydrophobic anti/de-icing coatings have been widely reported since it has high efficiency and can be achieved in different ways. The surface functional groups have a significant influence on surface energy which is related to surface wettability. However, the influence of the coating surfaces functional groups on the anti-/de-icing properties is still not well studied. To investigate this influence, different groups with different hydrophilicity have been introduced to 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-Tridecafluorooctyl acrylate (TFOA) to fabricate several branch copolymer ice-phobic coatings. The anti-icing performance and the influence of group radius and interaction were studied. The acrylic acid TFOA showed a great superhydrophobic property (over 150° water contact angle), lower ice adhesion strength (<50 kPa), and lower wear depth compared with other copolymer coatings. The mechanism was studied via the molecular dynamic calculation carried out in ChemDraw software. The interaction between hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups and the steric length of the hydrophilic groups influence the surface structure and surface element distribution, further influencing the ice adhesion strength.

Realizing icephobic surfaces with low ice adhesion and durability continues to be fascinating as well as challenging. Herein, a norbornene-based fluorinated polymer (NFP) with high flexibility and high tensile strength is designed and fabricated using a fluorinated side chain and a norbornene backbone, displaying low ice shear strength less than 20 kPa and excellent durability. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that the flexibility of the polymer chains and the synergistic macromolecular aggregation of the fluorinated side groups and the norbornene backbone play key roles in the excellent surface icephobic properties of the NFP films. Moreover, we also develop a facile approach to the design of durable icephobic slippery surfaces, which possess remarkable icephobic performance. This study not only sheds light on the relationship between the polymer molecular structure and surface icephobic properties but also provides a new avenue to conveniently realize anti-icing coatings.

Various organogel materials with either a liquid or solid surface layer have recently been designed and prepared. In this work, amphiphilic organogels (AmOG) are innovatively developed from copolymer P(PDMS-r-PEG-r-GMA) and 2,2′-diaminodiphenyldisulfide via epoxy group addition reaction and then infiltrated with amphiphilic lubricants instead of traditional hydrophilic or hydrophobic lubricants. Because of synergistic effects of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of amphiphilic lubricants, the AmOG surfaces showed high stability and excellent anti-icing performance. The delay in the freezing point of water was 1000 s on AmOG surfaces, which is 40 times longer as compared to the untreated hydrophilic glass surface. More importantly, low ice adhesion strength (15.1 kPa) was observed on AmOG which remained about 40 kPa even after 20 icing–deicing cycles. The novel amphiphilic organogels provide a new idea to prepare long-term anti-icing materials for practical applications.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have received growing attention as promising icephobic materials. In this study, SLIPS were prepared on aluminum alloys by combining anodization and infusion of common silicone oil. An SLIPS with low ice-adhesion strength (6 kPa) was obtained by optimizing the anodizing time parameters (10 min). In addition, the frosting process and freezing of water droplets on the as-prepared SLIPS at −10 °C were delayed for 2000 s and 4800 s, respectively. Simultaneously, the as-prepared SLIPS also exhibited excellent anti-icing performance in glaze ice, since the supercooled water drips/ice slipped from the surface. The ice weight of the as-prepared SLIPS was significantly lower than that of the bare aluminum surface and the anti-icing-fluid-coated aluminum surface, which was reduced by 38.2%–63.6% compared with the bare aluminum surface. The ice weight increased with decreased temperature and inclination angle. This work proposes a method suitable for large-area preparation of SLIPS that achieves excellent anti-icing performance and significantly reduces the weight of glaze ice. Keywords:slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces;anti-icing;glaze ice;ice-adhesion strength

A breakdown caused by the icing of power generation infrastructure is one of the serious disasters occurring in the power system. Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), whose ice adhesion strength is extremely low, have a promising application in the anti-icing field. In the present study, we fabricated SLIPSs with low ice adhesion strength by infusing silicone oil into an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate. In addition, the effects of the viscosity of silicone oil on the anti-icing properties and durability of the SLIPSs were investigated. The results show that a lower viscosity silicone oil brings about more slippery surfaces and lower ice adhesion strength. The ice adhesion strength was reduced by 99.3% in comparison with the bare Al alloy. However, low-viscosity silicone oil has worse de-icing resistance and heat resistance. Additionally, the porous films filled with low-viscosity silicone oil possess a better self-healing property after icing/de-icing cycles and followed by exposure to the atmosphere. When the viscosity of silicone oil is 50 mPa·s, the SLIPSs exhibit the best durability for anti-icing. Even after 21 de-icing tests or 168 h of heating at 90 °C, the ice adhesion strength still remains below 10% compared with that of bare Al. This work provides some useful advice for the design and fabrication of anti-icing SLIPSs.

Well-tailored construction of icephobic surfaces with mechanical robustness and investigation of the structure–property relationships at the molecular level are highly desirable. Herein, a series of norbornene-based fluorinated polyolefin copolymers (FPOR-x) with varying norbornenyl dodecafluoroheptyl ester (NDFHE) molar fractions (0–100 mol %) were well-designed and fabricated via living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) employing NDFHE and norbornenyl pentafluorophenyl ester (NPFPE) as the soft and hard segments, respectively. The mechanical and icephobic properties of the fluorinated copolymers can be regulated by adjusting the soft NDFHE contents. As a result, the well-designed norbornene-based copolymers exhibited a wide range of tunable mechanical properties, including tensile strength ranging from 0.2 to 26.4 MPa, elastic modulus ranging from 0.6 to 593.7 MPa, and breaking elongations ranging from 5718.7% to 3.7%, correlating with the proportion of soft NDFHE content. Furthermore, the synergistic interplay between soft and hard segments, particularly the hardness in the majority and softness in the minority or vice versa, could achieve a significant difference in the local modulus and enhance the propagations of cracks within the three-phase regions (soft regions/hard regions/ice), ultimately leading to a significant reduction in ice shear strength. Notably, FPOR-25% with a tensile strength of 12.0 MPa and an elastic modulus of 227.5 MPa exhibited a remarkably low ice shear strength of 57.7 kPa. This study not only highlights the relationship between the polymer molecular structure and surface icephobic properties but also breaks the limitations of icephobic surfaces with a low modulus.

Materials with low ice adhesion and long-lasting anti-icing properties remain an ongoing challenge in ultralow temperature environments (≤−30 °C). This study presents a gel material consisting of a polymer matrix (copolymer of polyurethane and acrylamide) and an anti-icing agent, ethylene glycol (EG), designed for anti-icing applications at ultralow temperatures. The surface shows a prolonged droplet freezing delay of ca. 322 s at −30 °C and frost resistance properties. It also exhibits an ice adhesion strength of 1.1 kPa at −10 °C and 39.8 kPa at −50 °C, resulting from the interaction between EG and water molecules that hinders the crystallization of ice as well as the significant mismatch between elastic gel and ice. In addition, the gel surface exhibits favorable anti-icing durability, with an ice adhesion strength below 20.0 kPa after 25 icing/deicing cycles and mechanical scratch tests. The gel demonstrates remarkable thermal durability, achieved through the H-bonds between the EG and polymer matrix. The H-bonds further enhance the anti-icing performance, thereby remarkably decreasing EG depletion and improving anti-icing durability. Overall, these properties suggest the potential application of this gel material in harsh environments including polar regions.

In this article, high performance hydrophilic anti-icing coatings with carboxyl groups were facilely fabricated via UV curing polyurethane methacrylate prepolymers , which were prepared through polyaddition of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) gradually in acetone (A series prepolymer) or isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) (B series prepolymer), and finally treated with triethylamine (TEA). The structures of A series prepolymer and the corresponding cured coating were confirmed via various techniques. The anti-icing performance of the cured coatings was investigated by ice freezing delay test, ice adhesion strength test, water contact angle and water absorption tests, and DSC test. Based on the testing results, the anti-icing behavior was defined as the incomplete icing of water on hydrophilic surface to weaken the interface adhesion. The ice adhesion strength firstly decreased as the DMPA content increased. At DMPA content of 5 %, the coating displayed a stable and very low ice adhesion strength of 40 kPa even after 25 times of icing (at −12 °C) and de-icing (at 25 °C) cycling. At even higher DMPA content, the ice adhesion strength improved because of the anchoring effect of the ice. Moreover, when IBOA was used as reactive diluent and participated in the polymerization with the prepolymers, the obtained B series coatings could have much improved mechanical properties, together with low ice adhesion strength. The facile fabrication process, excellent anti-icing performance and adjustable mechanical properties should make the coatings suitable for various purposes.
