Icing of seawater droplets is capable of causing catastrophic damage to vessels, buildings, and human life, yet it also holds great potential for enhancing applications such as droplet-based freeze desalination and anti-icing of sea sprays. While large-scale sea ice growth has been investigated for decades, the icing features of small salty droplets remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that salty droplet icing is governed by salt rejection-accompanied ice crystal growth, resulting in freezing dynamics different from pure water. Aided by the observation of brine films emerging on top of frozen salty droplets, we propose a universal definition of freezing duration to quantify the icing rate of droplets having varying salt concentrations. Furthermore, we show that the morphology of frozen salty droplets is governed by ice crystals that sprout from the bottom of the brine film. These crystals grow until they pierce the free interface, which we term ice sprouting. We reveal that ice sprouting is controlled by condensation at the brine film free interface, a mechanism validated through molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings shed light on the distinct physics that govern salty droplet icing, knowledge that is essential for the development of related technologies.

In-flight icing is a common hazard in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), accounting for 25% of drone accidents due to their sensitivity to weight increase. Anti-icing technology for UAVs remains challenging because of their limited payload capacity and insufficient power to support electrothermal deicing systems. In this study, a self-healing intelligent skin was developed for small-size smart devices, such as UAVs. It provides anti-icing and icephobic capabilities in addition to real-time monitoring of in-flight icing. This skin consists of five layers, including self-healing supramolecular elastomers and electrodes, with an encapsulation layer composed of a specially designed fluoropolymer to decrease the ice nucleation temperature (−28.4 °C) and ice adhesion strength (33.0 kPa). Notably, this skin can monitor ice accretion on the UAV surface in real time, and its sensing performance undergoes complete self-recovery after damage. This study paves the way for intelligent UAVs to operate safely under extreme weather conditions.

The accumulation of ice on the surfaces of equipment/facilities can result in energy wastage, substantial economic losses, and even pose a threat to personal safety. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) liquid-based porous resin coating doped with oleophilic molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) MXene nanoflakes was fabricated on a pre-coated oleogel sealer layer of aluminum plate. The results showed a reduction of approximately 99.1 % in ice adhesion strength (∼4.66 kPa) compared to the sandblasted aluminum plate and consistently maintained ice adhesion strength below 10 kPa for 70 days. Moreover, the coating exhibited excellent photothermal properties, with icing time delayed by a factor of 33.2 under simulated solar radiation power of 96 mW/cm 2 (1 sun) at an ambient temperature of − 15 °C. The ice adhered to the coating could easily slide off without the external force under “1 sun” at − 10 °C. The superior anti/de-icing performance of the coating can be primarily attributed to the low interfacial modulus of the porous structure, the exceptional retention of silicone-oil, and the excellent photothermal effect of embedded MXene nanoflakes. The 3D liquid-based porous coating, possessing extremely low ice adhesion and remarkable de-icing stability, demonstrates the substantial potential for practical applications that require sustained anti/de-icing performance.

Icing is ubiquitous in nature and engineering applications, and imposes threats to road and air transportations, wind energy infrastructures, etc. However, current active de-icing solutions, especially the most popular one, i.e., heating, suffer from high energy consumption whilst passive methods are often ineffective at high-speed, long-term, or large-particle conditions. Herein, a promising strategy adopting magnetic-responsive microfins (MRS) featuring reversible deformations is developed for de-icing. A novel micro-scale ice shoveling effect induced by the localized destruction of the ice adhesion interface owing to the inhomogeneous deformation is demonstrated, and its dependence on the ice particle size and temperature is investigated. An analytical model is proposed to describe the mechanism of this effect, showing a linear relation between the position of the magnet and the induced force agreeing well with experiments, leading to a system straightforward to predict and control. Specifically, the de-icing capacity of the surface becomes prominent when small-scale ice particles merge to large ones, providing a promising solution for applications on aircraft, wind turbines, etc., as the first of its kind to remove large particles under high-speed conditions effectively.

The icing phenomenon has caused much inconvenience to people's life. With the continuous progress of technology, it has been found that hydrophobic materials can be used in the anti-icing field, however icing still occurs on hydrophobic surfaces with long-term using in extremely harsh environments. Therefore, materials with anti-icing/icephobic and deicing functionalities have become an innovative strategy. In this paper, photothermal hydrophobic materials with anti-icing/icephobic and photothermal deicing properties are prepared using the photothermal nickel, Chinese ink and polydimethylhydrosiloxane with low surface energy. Due to the synergistic effect of the photothermal nickel nanoparticles and carbon nanoparticles in Chinese ink, the prepared material has a fast temperature rise rate at 1000 W/m 2 , which can reach the equilibrium temperature of 72 °C within 80 s. The freezing time of water droplets can be delayed to 1018 s at −15 °C, which is 11 times longer than that of nickel-plated materials. The ice on the coating melts rapidly and slides off along the inclined surface under the sunlight, proving that the material has a good photothermal deicing performance. Additionally, the coated surface has excellent wear resistance and UV resistance, which can be used outdoors for a long time. This powerful electroless nickel plating fabric, integrated with anti-icing/icephobic and fast deicing functionality with photothermal and drag reduction effect, provides a new approach to solve the icing problem in outdoor clothing.

Acetate-based deicers are frequently used as airport pavement de-icing fluids in cold regions. In this study, the ice pressure ( I p ), icing volume expansion rate ( Δ V P ), freezing point ( T 0 ), and undercooling degree of acetate-based deicers were investigated. The above mentioned indices were also compared with that of water and NaCl deicers. The results showed that the cooling process and ice crystal growing process of acetate-based deicers could be divided into five stages. Additionally, the stabilised values of I p and Δ V P decreased with the deicer concentration increases. Furthermore, the impulse concept of ice pressure ( IPI ) was proposed to evaluate the frost damage of concrete caused by deicers. The I p , Δ V P , and T 0 values of calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) deicer with different Ca/Mg mole ratios (i.e. 1/1, 0.91, 7/3, and 3/7) were tested in the ice pressure test. The value of CMA deicer with 3/7 Ca/Mg mole ratio was the lowest. However, the I p values of CMA deicers with 0.91 Ca/Mg and 1/1 Ca/Mg mole ratios were the highest. Among all the tested acetate-based deicers, CMA deicers had the lowest values of I p , Δ V P , and IPI . Moreover, the CMA deicer with 3Ca/7Mg mole ratio was recommended for deicing airport pavements to reduce the concrete frost deterioration caused by acetate-based deicers. In this study, we investigated the physical properties of acetate-based deicers, quantitatively analysed the destructive power of deicers in a freeze–thaw test, and studied the cause of freeze–thaw deterioration of concrete. Overall, this study provides a theoretical method for exploring new deicers.

Icing accretion on aircraft surfaces has threatened the flight safety so far. Slippery liquid infused porous surface (SLIPS) is an emerging anti-icing method. Many studies have found that SLIPS has self-repairing phenomena. However, there is almost no systematic research on the number of self-repairs in service, which determines the durability of anti-icing. Herein, the self-repairing performance of SLIPS is studied through icing-repairing and abrasion-repairing cycles. A stable and smooth lubricating layer of SLIPS is obtained by infiltrating a silanized porous surface with silicone oil, and the porous surface is constructed by anodization. The SLIPS exhibits low ice-adhesion strength even after frosting and the ice accumulation on the SLIPS can slide off under gravity. The self-repairing properties are evaluated under the condition that the ice-adhesion strength does not exceed 100 kPa. The SLIPS can withstand ≈150 icing/deicing cycles via 5 times of 1 h self-repair and 100 abrasion cycles via 4 times of 1 h self-repair. The results show that the SLIPS has durable anti-icing properties. Therefore, the prepared SLIPS are promising in the field of durable aircraft anti-icing materials.

The integration of superhydrophobicity and photothermal conversion offers transformative potential for addressing ice accretion challenges in outdoor infrastructure. However, current technologies are constrained by fluorinated chemical dependencies, complex manufacturing workflows, and limited substrate adaptability. Herein, we present a fluorochemical-free, eco-friendly, scalable coating system through a one-step spray deposition of antimony selenide (Sb2Se3), stearic acid (STA), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The synergistic incorporation of Sb2Se3 and STA creates a micro/nano structure with enhanced surface roughness (Ra = 189.937 nm) and low surface energy, achieving exceptional liquid repellency (water contact angle: 165°, sliding angle: 3°). The optimized Sb2Se3/STA/PMMA (Sb2Se3–SP) composite demonstrates remarkable substrate versatility, adhering robustly to diverse surfaces (metals, glass, paper, and wood) without requiring pretreatment. Notably, the Sb2Se3–SP coating exhibits a 4.67-fold extension in delayed ice freezing time (280 s at −20 °C) compared to that of uncoated substrate (60 s at −20 °C). Furthermore, the intrinsic photothermal conversion capability of Sb2Se3 enables rapid surface heating, rising to 80.0 °C in 180 s under 1-sun illumination (0.14 W/cm2), facilitating autonomous ice melting without external energy supply. Besides, the Sb2Se3–SP coating exhibits outstanding mechanical durability and self-cleaning property. This scalable, eco-conscious fabrication approach bridges the gap between laboratory innovation and industrial deployment, offering a sustainable pathway for energy-efficient anti-icing solutions in aviation power systems and cold-region infrastructure.

In recent years, oil-contained deicing materials have aroused peoples' concern due to their weak ice adhesion feature. Yet the loss of lubricant on oil-contained surface caused by contact or volatilization should be considered. Oily sebum secreted by sebaceous glands lubricates and moisturizes our skin, and can be reproduced continuously even after daily cleaning. In this work, inspired by sebaceous glands, a self-lubricant (SL) coating with ultra-low ice adhesion and excellent deicing durability was designed via continuously secreting lubricants. To determine the suitable simulant of oily sebum, the tribological tests and theoretical simulation analysis of lubricant on ice were conducted, confirming the effect of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lubricants. By well mixing lubricant and resin, and sebaceous glands-like structures formed in coating matrix after curing, which endowed coating with lubricant storage feature and sebum-like secretion structure. The affinity of PDMS molecules to ice and the regeneration of lubricant film ensured the deicing durability of coating. Ice adhesion strength can be kept below 100 kPa even after 100 icing-deicing cycles, and can recover low ice adhesion strength (~50 kPa) via lubricant secreting. This work highlights the importance of lubricant selection and gives a new vision to designing durable icephobic materials.

In an effort to prevent or minimize icing hazards, techniques and materials for icing inhibition and deicing have always been highly favored throughout human history. This work discovers the integrated anti-icing and deicing effects of poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) triblock rubber (SBS) after its easy oxidation in iodine vapor. Iodine oxidation happens on the block of polybutadiene, featured by the conversion of SBS from hydrophobic to amphiphilic and the improved capability of photothermal conversion. The oxidized SBS can serve as a polymer coating, which possesses intriguing abilities to delay the kinetics of icing on its surface and repel the ice under light illumination. According to characterizations of surface chemistry and mechanical performance, iodine oxidation is assumed to involve the processes of iodine coordination to unsaturated bonds, the formation of radical cations as a result of the redox reaction between iodine and unsaturated carbon–carbon bonds, improved light absorption owing to the formation of polyiodide anions, and intermolecular coupling of radical cations. The appearance of polar moieties/species within the oxidized SBS is attributed to the delayed ice nucleation. The significant photothermal capacity in visible and near-infrared windows enables the iodine-oxidized SBS coating to remove the adhered ice by melting under light illumination when the icing process is inevitable, even at an extremely low temperature (−25 °C).

Silicone rubber is widely employed as a protective material for aircraft propeller leading edges, where surface anti-icing/de-icing performance critically impacts flight safety. Using a combined spray coating and templating approach, we fabricated micro/nanostructures on the silicone rubber surface, conferring exceptional superhydrophobicity. These enhanced properties facilitate ice shedding during de-icing while prolonging surface ice formation time. To leverage photothermal conversion with minimal heat loss, nano-graphite – selected for its superior photothermal characteristics – was incorporated as a filler material. This imparted excellent photothermal conversion capability and low thermal conductivity to the composite. Subsequent evaluation of surface ice adhesion strength and melting kinetics under illumination revealed a reduction in ice adhesion strength to 5.1 kPa. Under simulated 1-sun irradiation (1 kW/m²), complete ice detachment occurred within 300 s.

Slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have been considered to be potential and effective method for anti-icing. Much work needed to be done for the application in field. In this study, SLIPS were successfully fabricated on 7075-T651 aluminum alloy by anodizing in phosphoric acid solution with three different voltage parameters and coating lubricant. Then the most suitable anodization parameters of samples were selected through the anti-icing performance tests. The best as-prepared surface exhibited ultralow ice-adhesion strength, which reduced from 261 to 6 kPa. Meanwhile, the freezing time of water-drop on aluminum alloy surfaces have been dramatically delayed at −5 and −10 °C (humidity of 75% ± 5%), respectively. Moreover, the durability of the SLIPS have also been investigated. Cycles of icing/deicing, mechanical damage, thermal and UV exposure were used to investigate the durability of SLIPS, and SLIPS could still show low ice-adhesion strength.Keywords:ice-adhesion;anti-icing;aluminum alloy;anodization;durability
